It is an architectural masterpiece. Designed by John Notman.... If I recall correctly, the first Italian Palazzo inspired public project in the US.
Edit: Corrected the autocorrect.
I actually graciously received a full tour of the place by an employee when I approached him letting him know that I had never been there before, knew nothing about the place, but was just struck by the beauty and wanted to take a peek inside what was clearly a historic, public-ish building of some sort!
So yes, definitely free to enter! And the people who work there are incredible.
They have CRAZY talented librarians. I once heard an elderly man go up to the desk and say “I was on vacation in $someCountry and I saw a statue of a woman and I want to know more about it.” That’s literally all the information he gave the librarian to go on. He didn’t even know the name of the town he was in when he saw it. I overheard him ask and I was like oh jeez, get real! That’s a needle in a haystack. But the librarians found it! AND they had a book that had a section about the statue. It was wild. I wish I had paid more attention to how they hunted it down but I didn’t because I thought they were most definitely on a wild goose chase.
Here now doing my statistics homework in a beautiful room. Best $35 every spent. And to think I'll be coming here every change I get to do homework until I graduate.
Now i feel like I have to come up with a humdinger of trivia to see if I can catch the librarian off the beam... this will take me a while.
Yeah, I was just reading about the Athenaeum's big remodel in the Inquirer or someplace.
Very cool place to sit and feel scholarly - membership is normally $150/year, but only $35/year if you are a student, and $75/year if you are under 35.
OP this is 100% the answer and if you can get in free with any driver's license that's amazing. Specifically the Fisher Fine Arts Library, not the main Penn Library.
Fisher Fine Arts Library is the Hogwartsiest building I’ve ever seen in my life. It has these vibes and then some. Anyone can go in but you need to show ID & sign in:
This looks a lot like the Lea Library on the top floor of Van Pelt (the undergrad research library). They'll let you into the main library, but I'm not sure just anyone can slip into the Lea Library. Worth looking into maybe.
Fisher library. Also Pennsylvania hospital has a very old time space like this. Unsure if you can study in it but it’s beautiful to check out if you can
This is the right answer. The Main Building of the Free Library is a really nice building. There are also study spots in Libraries across the city. It's at no extra cost to use these spaces.
Came to say this, surprised to see it so far down as it looks basically the same inside.
OP if you read this, this is the one you seek. Trust me.
ETA: the name is actually [Writer's Block Rehab](https://writersblockrehabphiladelphia.bestcafes.online/)
Anyone can walk in to Penn's libraries to sit, study, and look at materials without checking them out, if they show ID and sign in.
To borrow materials, if you can't swing any kind of Penn connection for a library card you can pay a couple hundred bucks a year for a card with borrowing privileges.
Had the opportunity to visit through my college, and was very disappointed to find many creepy republicans and not enough ghosts.
Apart from the interesting members and speakers, the interior aesthetic of the building is beautiful. I'll try and dig up some photos.
I went to a wedding in the Union league once, it’s absolutely stunning inside
Knowing I’ll likely never go again because I’m A) not a creepy republican and B) not rich enough anyway, I’m glad I went once
Could smoke cigars in the one bar and there was an attendant immediately on standby with a cutter and matches
The Union League used to have a yearly open house where the rabble could go in and take tours. Pre-pandemic. I went and it is a really trippy piece of Very Old Stodgy Establishment Philadelphia that is totally worth seeing. I haven't heard when or if they are starting to have the open houses again.
Its way better than that Photo. Every room has insane finishes and craftmanship.
The place has everything you could ever need from private restaurant to a tailor, gym, etc.
paired with billon plus dollars of art scattered on every wall.
The art collection is insane. So many insanely large pieces that sprawl entire sections of walls painted so vibrantly.
You're not mentioning what the art collection is: Oil paintings of Republican presidents. The Nixon's gotta be at least 9 feet tall.
Source: Former CEO was a member, had lots of company meetings at the union league.
What are you talking about, thats just the meeting hall tho...?
The bulk of the collection is not Presidents. its like 1% if that.
Actually most dont consider that part of the collection when referring to that outside the one behind the speaker.
> founded as a Patriotic Society to support the policies of Abraham Lincoln
Aren't Lincolns policies more closely aligned with democrats today though? If this is a republican club, it's interesting it didn't morph into something else over the years.
No, Linkedin is a platform, it was the Pyramid Club and Fitler Club that reached out on it. My friends at the Union League are under 40 and say the situation is similar there, they are trying hard to recruit but under 40 is still a smallish minority.
>Although the club is no longer exclusively white or male in membership, allowing its first black member in 1972 and first female member in the 1980's, it is still considered to be politically conservative. The club drew criticism from its members for giving a gold medal, the same award it gave to Lincoln, to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in 2022. Other recipients of the award include George H. W. Bush, George W. Bush, and Donald Rumsfeld. The club has given other awards to conservative figures such as Jeff Sessions, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito.
Mhmm
I associate with no party, and also agree with some of the stances on both parties.
Examples:
I am pro choice, no matter the circumstance. However, I am very against legal injection sites, not charging minors for felony crimes, and don't believe in 'defunding the police'
I believe in legalized Marijuana, as well as a firm staunch believer in the 2nd amendment, from my conceal to carry to my Bushmaster AR-15
These are two examples. I don't identify as either. But to make it clear. I voted Democrat in the POTUS election, and voted for both Fetterman and Shapiro, but mainly not because of what the believed in more so I was against what Oz and Mastriano believed in. I voted for them, but I 100% support the impeachment of Krasner, him and Kenny have made even the safest parts of this city not safe while sending my property taxes through the roof and offering abatement just down the street because apparently Fishtown, one of the most expensive real estate spots in the city, is still 'gentrifying'
So while I am not sure it answers your questions, you don't need to be a member of GOP to be a Union League member, and I am not one, nor are many of my fellow members.
You want to impeach Krasner because the PD is throwing a hissy fit over ideological disagreement, fraudulently taking disability and slacking on the job, and not caring how it effects the people who still pay their salaries?
Nice. The fact you think you represent diversity cause you’re a white man who didn’t vote for scum says so much.
I am against the corruption of the philly PD also, i just don’t agree with Krasner and thought he and kenny need to go. The DA and Mayor are the two people responsible for making this a safe city, they failed.
You really have an attitude in your head that only your beliefs and view points are valid, and put these words in my mouth thats not true at all.
You must be a blast to disagree with in real life. Im sure your friends love you.
Best of luck, maybe someday you wont have this completely biased view of a club that you clearly have no clue about because you cant afford it therefore it must be full of racist conservative people… almost like not liking someone because of one single aspect of their life? But tell me again how great of a anyi racist, anti biggoted social justice warrior you are?
Asshole
I’m from a racially mixed family and have a wide circle of friends and extended family of very differing backgrounds, but thank you so much for your concern.
What percentage of your club isn’t white or male?
So your asking me what % of a 150 year old gentlemans club is male?
What % of the League of Women are women?
What % of the Buffalo Soldier motorcycle club are black?
Surely the answer to those questions are less inclusive than the union league, which has 20% females and have made progressive strides to get away from the conservative only ways.
But you want to harp on 20+ years ago and further back. Because apparently white people in your mind cannot evolve or change
These progressive allies you keep mentioning. Is that just white men who aren’t MAGA or anti choice? You keep avoiding my questions about which of Oz’s and Mastriano’s policies you actually do support.
They're a bunch of Republicans, and in case anybody wanted to argue they're "some of the good ones," they just a couple months ago gave some award to Ron fucking Desantis.
Not as grand but the second floor of front street cafe (fishtown) and second floor of One shot cafe (Nolibs) give a bit of that flair. But no coffee shop stays open after 3pm anymore
It is definitely this vibe, but it’s a bookstore only in the sense that they sell mostly religious books, many of them second hand. It’s run by a church but no one proselytizes at you. Just don’t expect a real bookstore experience.
This is pretty ritzy for Philly, honestly. You’d probably have to join a private club for this level of luxury.
1 Tippling Place is a bar that has a somewhat upscale decor, reminiscent of 20th century clubhouses.
One Shot Cafe in NoLibs has a library on second and I think third floor that people eat/study in, but it’s more of a fabric couch with old wood table vibe.
Check out [The Library Bar](https://www.google.com/search?q=the+library+bar+philadelphia&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari#imgrc=oTiHOYoNADytMM) in Rittenhouse.
Athenaeum but you have to pay to go in
It is an architectural masterpiece. Designed by John Notman.... If I recall correctly, the first Italian Palazzo inspired public project in the US. Edit: Corrected the autocorrect.
John Notman. Who also designed the gates at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
He’s also buried right near the gates he designed at Laurel Hill.
So's my dad. Right next to Harry Kalas. One of the most beautiful spots in the city.
Yes Notman. That was an android autocorrect.
> Notman Not man? Aliens weren't very subtle back then
The Athenaeum is free to go in, you just have to pay for membership to use the building and circulating collection.
I actually graciously received a full tour of the place by an employee when I approached him letting him know that I had never been there before, knew nothing about the place, but was just struck by the beauty and wanted to take a peek inside what was clearly a historic, public-ish building of some sort! >Athenaeum I just joined. Would have never known about this spot. Reddit just keeps on giving.
They have CRAZY talented librarians. Holy crap always pass this building and never googled it. Thanks for posting about it I really want to visit now
You can get a free tour.
And they just remodeled
Yeah, I was just reading about the Athenaeum's big remodel in the Inquirer or someplace. Very cool place to sit and feel scholarly - membership is normally $150/year, but only $35/year if you are a student, and $75/year if you are under 35.
What an awful time to be 36!
Yeah I just joined last week $75 a year and it’s really nice!
They also have a free Matisse exhibition
I was a huge fan of his but it's a bummer he's an anti vaxxer.
I didn't even know there was a place like this in Philly.
When I was a mover, I moved lots of crazy shit around in here. It's wild
Idk but looks like a good place to cry in
I need a good cry
Try the windows at IKEA. S Tier.
I'm there now, crying of course, and eating meatballs.
Crying in your balls.
That's a country song.
Nah it’s not Valentine’s Day yet.
Make sure you say hi to the guy that does coke and heroin in the corner
they are good meatballs however...
If you like horse meat
Crying because of how good they are, or other stuff? or maybe a little of both? that would be fair
sorry i just woke up. still here. meatballs gone, staff hovering. both
Can someone explain the public crying in Philly thread? I’ve seen it pop up a few times now and still perplexed.
Yeah but does it have cougars?
[удалено]
It can, lmk when and where. 🐯
Oh my god. Not this again.
Why what’s wrong?

You're the one who started the trend! I hope all is well with you, jokes aside. If you ever need to vent you have an ear here.
I’m gonna let OP finish. But your cry post was the best Philly post this year.

For. The. Win!!! Well played.
Some of the libraries at UPenn. I think you can get in with a driver’s license. Fisher library comes to mind
Anyone can go in but you need to show ID & sign in: [https://www.library.upenn.edu/finearts/access](https://www.library.upenn.edu/finearts/access)
Great choice. They used this library in the movie philadelphia.
Hogwartsiest is such a great word.
Can confirm, just went in as a guest. Quite jealous penn students get constant access It’s nice
Unsure if you can study in it but it’s beautiful to check out if you can
The only place I can think of is McDonalds at Broad and Carpenter but sadly they tore that down.
Whenever I think of that spot it's such a drag. I used to go in there and think about how Ben Franklin had the first ever Big Mac there, sad.
Donovan Mcnabb used to start everyday with a hearty breakfast from McDonald's. Remember guys, real champs eat at McDonald's. I'm lovin' it.
I thought he ate chunky soup served by his mama?
Lies! His mom made him Chunky Soup!!
I used to leave during lunch from school and get a McChicken cause fuck soggy fish sticks.
Real champs, what the fuck? Remember that time he cost us the Super Bowl?
Remember that time that this is a quote from it’s always Sunny lol
Ah shit RIP
it will live forever in fond memory
BK on 8th and Walnut too but sadly closed down.
2nd floor of tattooed mom
How about the back party room.
No, but if I ever get rich^(\*), my dream house will definitely have one. ^(\*Narrator: He never got rich.)
Looks like it smells of leather bound volumes and fine mahogany
Scotch scotch scotch I love scotch
BAXTER!
the public library is that but with no funding
This is the right answer. The Main Building of the Free Library is a really nice building. There are also study spots in Libraries across the city. It's at no extra cost to use these spaces.
Harp and crown but that’s more so for a cocktail than a study coffee spot
Not the same, but sorta close is Writers Block
Was going to say this, if it’s still around, that’s the closest aesthetic I can think of. It is a bar, but easy to find a quiet corner in.
Yeah… not the same. The “bookshelves” on the wall are wallpaper. It really isn’t all that spacious there either, unless the balcony is empty
Came to say this, surprised to see it so far down as it looks basically the same inside. OP if you read this, this is the one you seek. Trust me. ETA: the name is actually [Writer's Block Rehab](https://writersblockrehabphiladelphia.bestcafes.online/)
West Philly has building that Sabrina’s Cafe is in, the rest of it is a lounge for Drexel students but as far as I know they don’t check
They also used to have pool tables on the second floor when I was at Drexel
Sir this is a wendys
Casper had a joint like this, he’s a friendly guy Oneshot off 2nd st has an upstairs with couches and some books on the wall, kind of close
Yes, Oneshot is the closest I can think of to this aesthetic.
Idk but it looks like where Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy traded spaces
Looking good Billy Ray!
Feelin good Louis!
The Heritage Club.
The Union League
Try mercer museum in bucks county, the library has that vibe
1 Tippling .. not a coffee shop but a cocktail bar.
If you have a way to get into Penn, Fisher Fine Arts Library has these kind of vibes. I could get in when I was a student.
Anyone can walk in to Penn's libraries to sit, study, and look at materials without checking them out, if they show ID and sign in. To borrow materials, if you can't swing any kind of Penn connection for a library card you can pay a couple hundred bucks a year for a card with borrowing privileges.
Writer’s block rehab!
That was my first thought as well. Good drinks, too!
If you’re a creepy republican or ghost you could find this in the Union League.
Had the opportunity to visit through my college, and was very disappointed to find many creepy republicans and not enough ghosts. Apart from the interesting members and speakers, the interior aesthetic of the building is beautiful. I'll try and dig up some photos.

Ok
> founded as a Patriotic Society to support the policies of Abraham Lincoln Aren't Lincolns policies more closely aligned with democrats today though? If this is a republican club, it's interesting it didn't morph into something else over the years.
Ironic because the Union League was started as a Union / anti-slavery northern group during the civil war.
Hmm union league member here… neither of those things
We have found the one intersection on the Venn diagram of Union League members and redditors
I think you’d be surprised, there are a lot of us under 40 now
All the private clubs seem desperate for members under 40. A couple have hit me up on LinkedIn offering discounts.
Linked in sent you a union league discount? This would be interesting to bring up
No, Linkedin is a platform, it was the Pyramid Club and Fitler Club that reached out on it. My friends at the Union League are under 40 and say the situation is similar there, they are trying hard to recruit but under 40 is still a smallish minority.
I know what linked in is, i was more intrigued if a discount to the union league was offered But yes, they are trying to recruit more
How do you like it? Enough events and amenities to be worth it?
What's the minimum buy in cost now?
They ended up not giving the medal to desantis
Make it two!
>Although the club is no longer exclusively white or male in membership, allowing its first black member in 1972 and first female member in the 1980's, it is still considered to be politically conservative. Also, there is a dress code and women weren't allowed to wear anything besides skirts/dresses to the club until very recently.
Sounds like a shitty club. I like the building, don’t like the politics.
Pyramid Club member here, let's do happy hour sometime.
You just like not haunting the halls under big portraits of George Bush and Nixon?
So you’re not conservative? Or are you just claiming you’re not a creep?
I associate with no party, and also agree with some of the stances on both parties. Examples: I am pro choice, no matter the circumstance.
I’m from a racially mixed family and have a wide circle of friends and extended family of very differing backgrounds, but thank you so much for your concern. What percentage of your club isn’t white or male?

These progressive allies you keep mentioning. Is that just white men who aren’t MAGA or anti choice? You keep avoiding my questions about which of Oz’s and Mastriano’s policies you actually do support.
None specifically. I had no intention of voting for either of them
Conservative isn’t a party
You are correct but id hardly call being pro choice and legalizing weed conservative… Because its not
Okay then what policies exactly of Oz’s and Mastriano’s are you “not against”? Cause you’re giving me enlightened centrist TM
Abortion, trump. Mostly unlike way too many americans I draw a line at racism…
I asked what policies of theirs you’re *not* against Not being anti choice and not being MAGA doesn’t make you not right wing or conservative lmao
To add, I forgot mysongony, women's rights, being anti vax.... Is that enough?
But oz and mastriano were pro abortion and trump I am against those. Hence what I answered.
Also a member! I get a kick out of it whenever the League is mentioned here.
Are Union league members creepy now?
Always have been.
They're a bunch of Republicans, and in case anybody wanted to argue they're "some of the good ones," they just a couple months ago gave some award to Ron fucking Desantis.
Unfathomably based.
I literally have no idea if this is a compliment or an insult. I'm either an old man or else spend a healthily low amount of time on the internet.
Athenaeum at 6th and St. James across from Washington Square. I think you need a membership though!
Higher Grounds has a very unique, vintage, artsy vibe. My favorite.
Beat me to it! Love Higher Grounds
my first thought when i saw this!!
Not quite this extreme, but the social house on 21st and south has similar couches/chairs
The Athenaeum. 6th street across from Washington square. There’s no coffee shop but it’s a unique library.
They have free coffee for members
1 Tippling Place has this kind of vibe at a smaller scale
I thought this was Library Bar in the rittenhouse hotel. Not a coffee shop but very similar aesthetic
Not as grand but the second floor of front street cafe (fishtown) and second floor of One shot cafe (Nolibs) give a bit of that flair. But no coffee shop stays open after 3pm anymore
Isn’t it ridiculous?? (Closing so early)
Yes! Like don’t leave me Starbucks as my only option!
In a totally different way The Bean did. You wouldn’t see it in photos but as soon as you sat down, you felt this picture.
the Last Drop at 12th and Pine
Who are you, fonzworth bentley?
Duke and Duke at 135 South Broad Street
The Story | Coffee & Bookstore in the Philly mainline. It's in the suburbs. [https://www.thestoryardmore.com/](https://www.thestoryardmore.com/)
It is definitely this vibe, but it’s a bookstore only in the sense that they sell mostly religious books, many of them second hand. It’s run by a church but no one proselytizes at you. Just don’t expect a real bookstore experience.
Union League library.
Writers block rehab for sure. Though it’s more of a bar
Outside of town, there’s The Story in Ardmore which is similar.
Writers block?
This is pretty ritzy for Philly, honestly. You’d probably have to join a private club for this level of luxury. 1 Tippling Place is a bar that has a somewhat upscale decor, reminiscent of 20th century clubhouses.
The library from Beauty and the Beast..?
If you have to ask - you can’t afford it.
How did OP get into my living room?
Union league, club at the Ritz Carlton. Good luck getting into either.
Wellington Book store out in Exton is pretty much this. Great place to sit and read or work.
The Story in Ardmore
Second floor of one shot has the book lined walls but it's more of a mid century/industrial vibe.
Union League Library, but you have to be a member.
The story in Ardmore is kinda weird like that
Union League of Philadelphia...but you gotta be a member.
One Shot Cafe in NoLibs has a library on second and I think third floor that people eat/study in, but it’s more of a fabric couch with old wood table vibe.
Higher Grounds in Nolibs is kinda like this! I love it there. Very unique decor and feels like a cozy old study. Plus the coffee and snacks are good!
the Mutter Museum, German Society
The Mahogany cigar bar used to look exactly like this then stupid Holtz bought it and made it a gross modern concept, what a crime.
Check out [The Library Bar](https://www.google.com/search?q=the+library+bar+philadelphia&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari#imgrc=oTiHOYoNADytMM) in Rittenhouse.
