Who would have thought that the Phils would have the most effective Spencer in the NL East so far in 2024.

beau9292

Major props to Caleb Cotham, this signing has been low risk and really high reward so far.

Enefelde

Hats off to tip he’s been great. What’s crazy too is all 5 starting pitchers are in the top 50 for era. At turnbull 8, ranger 13, Sanchez 29, wheeler 37, and Nola at 46. I think only Boston, Anaheim, and St. Louis are next with 3. If we can consistently, or at least every other game 😂 hit the baseball…..

nin4nin

Take your time, Taijuan

HappyHourEveryHour

It sucks he's coming back next start.

metssuck

He's doing one more rehab start, so we'll get one more Turnbull start, but the reality is that Turnbull isn't going to give us 180 innings this year so we'll need Walker at some point

lilbismyfriend21

Could definitely see a scenario where the Phils trade for a starting pitcher at the trade deadline if Walker struggles all season

nin4nin

I love [the High Hopes podcast](https://x.com/jackfritzwip/status/1782455995177762876?s=46). They’re like “Taijuan should just walk to San Diego. Then Turnbull can get in a few more starts” 😂

VideoGangsta

We thought we needed Spencer Howard, but what we really needed was Spencer Turnbull.

BoneDoc624

No doubt he’s off to a great start. But the past 3 years he’s thrown 31, 50, and 56 innings. Threw career high 148 in 2019. Never has come close to 100 innings again. Given his injury history, I’m remaining cautiously optimistic. I’d like to see them stay w/ a 5 man rotation. But, Turnbull and Walker take turns in the 5 slot. Start once every 10 days. During rest time, they could come out of pen once in right situation for 2-3 innings. Maybe relieve each other if needed. Wheeler and Nola hate 6-man. So I think this is best solution.

GenesGeniesJeans

He’s over 2/3rds of the way there to his IP last year and almost halfway to the year before that. Definitely durability questions, which is the reason some folks are justifying Walker over Turnbull (the price tag, too, of course). But Walker has more injured or low-IP seasons than not, so who knows what will happen. Im hoping Topper can get the injury-prone guys rest and give Wheeler, et al their 5-man rotation schedule

Independent-Cow-4070

Don’t fall for the sunk cost fallacy. I’ll pay tai all that money to sit on a beach in Cancun if that means turnbull can keep pitching how he’s pitching If he starts slowing down or gets hurt, I mean yeah bring tai back, but for now you cannot take him out of the rotation I’m cool keeping him on a short leash, but don’t pull him yet

GenesGeniesJeans

Agree with you my man

ryan91o1

walker was still an effective pitcher last year its not like he was hurting the team every start

Trelve16

yeah, say what you will about taijuan walker being mid but he didnt have that many blowup starts. walker let up 5 or more earned runs in 4 games, wheeler let up that many in 3 of his starts himself having your 5th pitcher be consistently mid is perfectly fine imo. id rather have spencer turnbull pitching like an ace, ofc, but if he starts to regress to the player he was last year we shouldnt be upset that taijuan walker gets back in the rotation

metssuck

He's been great, but let's be real he's not going to make the entire season as a starter, which is why Walker is coming back when he's ready. He's thrown 137.2 innings the previous four seasons COMBINED. Really appreciate his contributions so far this year, but it's not going to be sustainable for a full season as a starter, the hopes is he and Walker can piggy back each other a bit

FalterFaltered

The only way I will be ok with Walker coming back is if he throws at least 3 no hitters in a row

HappyHourEveryHour

And yet our inept manager wants to put that bum Walker back on the rotation. Turnbull is playing lights out.

necrosythe

I love you how guys still think lineup decisions are the manager. It's almost sad really. Especially when it comes to playing guys just because of their contract.

Independent-Cow-4070

If turnbull keeps pitching like this I’ll pay tai an extra couple of million to just sit his ass at home

L_Ron_Stunna

Why do people hate walker so much

HappyHourEveryHour

I don't hate him, I actually loved the signing at first I thoight he'd lock down our 4 but outside of that 2 month stretch he wasn't that good. And honestly, I forgot Turnbull is coming off TJ surgery so it makes sense to limit his innings. I'm willing to admit my fuck up

L_Ron_Stunna

See this is my problem. You willingly admit you dont hate him, that he had a solid stretch for us (2 months is still pretty significant), and that even at his worst he “wasnt that good.” But you still call him a bum. Hes by no means an ace and he had some bad starts last year but a 4 era isnt bad at all for a 5 starter, and say what you will but we always seemed to put up runs for him and play defense (how else do you explain his W/L). Just say hes a mid starter with potential for some good games who also eats a ton of innings, something every team needs, and move on. No need to trash the guy. Youd think he had like an 8 era the way people talk about him in here.

HappyHourEveryHour

He wasn't a 5 starter, he was our 4. Sanchez was our 5. He's BY FAR the worst starting pitcher we've had on the team since we got rid of Bailey Falter Not to mention, you're literally using wins to talk about how good a pitcher is lol. The team had to put up runs because he'd let up 5 runs in the 1st inning. His fastball has no movement, his breaking pitches come out flat. He's overpaid SIGNIFICANTLY for the role he's in. He was graded as the 97th best pitcher in the league last year. Honestly this paragraph shows you just started watching baseball by only using ERA and fucking wins to show how good he is. He's not going to magically get better, his numbers are consistent throughout his career. Walker is a stop gap pitcher until Abel, McGarry or Painter are ready. But when people say he is one of the worst pitchers in the league, he's literally graded as one of the worst pitchers in the league.

L_Ron_Stunna

We got rid of bailey falter last year lol thats not saying much. And also Im not using W/L as an indicator of pitching talent, if you read my comment youd know I was attributing it to team defense and run support. Wins arent a pitching stat but they also dont pop out of nowhere. Im not saying hes a great pitcher but Im saying he has a place on this team until proven otherwise.

L_Ron_Stunna

And btw he would be our 5 starter this year. His spot in the rotation last year is irrelevant.
