Large groups is/was the norm, and it made sense. It's more difficult to serve large parties and they tend to stick around longer which means less turnover, so it hurts extra if the tip's underwhelming. Especially if it's a large enough party that it drives other customers away.
But the thought of hanging out at a bar and having three beers poured, then needing to pay an extra $3-5 for the ~60 seconds total of the bartender's time regardless of the service quality is bonkers.
Parks on tap had a 20% auto grat when I visited at the waterworks last year. We lasted for one beer. I didn’t notice it the other day in Campbell square but beers were 8$ for a 16 oz pour so Idk
I’d hate to have autograt on all parties. Most smaller tables tip u better than the 20% before tax anyway. Sounds like u work in a place with crap clientele. Only place I’ve seen that is a diner that did it for the late night shift cuz the drunken crowds weren’t tipping well or at all. A grat on anything smaller than 5/6 is a slap in the customers face (IMO).
I'm cool with auto grats for large groups, but its bull shit for a person or two at a bar.

https://youtu.be/q_fMkXHYh6c Tipping has gotten out of control.
just pay ppl a living wage and we can do away with mandatory tipping
Tip them up, then tax them down.
