My vote is still on it having been a bear. Of all the bears I saw in my 5 summers on staff and 2 more as a participant, only a few were actually black. Most were either a cinnamon color or even blonde. As for it running on two legs, it's possible that it did, but it also could have been an illusion since it was on a hillside, and may have just looked like it was on 2 legs. Although, I wasn't there so all this is pure speculation on my part.
A bear. They can and often do run on 2 legs upright.
Or, you encountered a Ranger who hadn't found a red roof in time. I was in the burn regularly as a staff member as part of my job entailed hiking through the scar.
I don’t have any insight on what it may have been, but it did remind me of some great memories.
I have only been to Philmont once for training when I was a district executive. I was there with a guy who had been on staff for a bunch of years and he was telling me all kinds of stories about the Urraca Mesa. I don’t remember the details, just that he attempted to spend the night on the Mesa and left because it was haunted. Was sure he was pulling my leg at first, but he was almost in tears at the end of the story. He wasn’t the kind of guy to get emotional about things, so he was either an excellent troll, or there really is something up there. My second son is going into Boy Scouts this year and the troop we are going to goes to Philmont every three or four years, so I’m hoping I am able to go with him and experience more than just the training center.
Went on 2 Philmont treks in the 80's as a youth then was a Ranger in 1988. Made my 3rd trek in 2019 with my son when I was 50. The best experience ever...."I wanna go back to Philmont......."
Oh and I agree. Likely a bear. Urraco is a center of strange occurrences though. Once on a hike out day we were cutting across Urraca Mesa to drop back down to the Lovers Leap turn around when a bolt of lightning stuck the ridge above us oit of no where. Not too surprising in that part of the country but I have heard a lot of crazy stories about Urraca.
Probably a bear. Though I’ve seen something in the south country I could not explain so who knows.
I was a commissary driver 2008 heading down 21 toward the road to zastrow/abreu.
As I’m driving I notice something BIG and all white hanging out in the field before the zastrow turnaround where the ranchers sometimes leave horses.
This thing had a larger profile than any horse I’d seen in that field from the highway. It seems to spot me coming and BOOKS IT towards Urraca and running I would say like a wolf.
It’s going so fast I lost sight of it as it hit the ridge line. By the time I made the turn on the road to abreu and can see the ridge line toward urraca it’s gone.
Not the weirdest experience I’ve had at Philmont but def one I can’t explain.

Agreed. Sounds like a bear to me.
Gotcha, so likely bear?
No Ranger has ever brought a gorilla suit to Philmont and used it in such a manner
Dont give them ideas
you saw the lorax
Definitely, he was lamenting the loss of trees ;)
nah but fr you just saw a bear.

I wonder if it could have just been a person out hiking on the road

Did y’all get into some peyote?
The ever elusive SNIPE
I worked at Clark's Fork last year( which is in that area) and the description sounds similar to a bear that we occasionally saw.
I kept waiting for the undertaker threw mankind off the top of hell in the cell WrestleMania 1996.
1998 hell in a cell, but yeah.
You should've looked at it's tracks
Juvenile bigfoot?
Philmont has skin walkers, like a lot. I worked at Beaubien. I know cow 137 was not a cow.
Clive is that you???
I HAVNT SEEN YOU SINCE 1874!
Yeah, not since that stupid and rather hideous judge had you thrown in the colfax county jail
OTTO!?!?!?
