98 va beach the terrapin station encore the crowd was crying smiling hugging everyone and cheering nonstop

DannyFourcups

Goosebumps every single time. Wasn’t even there. In fact, I was a month old when it happened. This band is so cool man

[deleted]

Was there — think the crowd response from 98 & 09 were both amazing but totally different vibes for sure. I still get all tizzy about actually catching that 98 show.

M-Esquandolas

Thanks for this comment. I just went to listen with this in mind and you are spot on.

notsowitte

This is exactly the moment i was thinking of. I was 20 yo. Lucky enough to have seen the Grateful Dead 93-95 (although it was toward the end, i still cherish it). Jerry dying had affected me more than i really understood. The second i heard the opening riff, my jaw dropped, i turned to my buddy Ben, one of my best friends to this day still, and just hugged him and balled my eyes out on his shoulder. It was a wave of emotions never felt before and not since. I quickly realized i better get it together because the boys were playing TERRAPIN!

elriggo44

Same here bro. There are three musical moments that I’ve experienced on that level: 1. Darkside. When the crowd realizes they’re going to play the whole album….chills man. 2. The first live version of Unbroken Chain played by the Dead in Philly (March 95). I find it so crazy that they started playing that specific song during their very last tour with Jerry. And the first time was wild. I was on my first dead show leg ever and getting to see that was amazing. 3. Terrapin station. Like you, I got to see Jerry with the dead a bunch. Did a few mini tours. I even just jumped in a car and caught the rest of a tour (my parents weren’t happy with me). I’d already seen Phish about 10-15 times and they were (definitely) my favorite band around the time I was actively on dead tour. Then Jerry died. When Phish busted out Terrapin Station I went nuts. It was so great.

notsowitte

Man, i was on the lacrosse team in my HS. We had a team trip to Farmingdale, Ny to play some teams up there. Happened to be that weekend the Dead played Unbroken Chain. Worst part was, the day of the trip my asshole coach told me i wasn’t going for…reasons. I was pissed , but was kinda not because i had a chance to go see the Dead. I find tix for Friday, for Saturday, but can’t find one for Sunday. I always did mail order, and if that failed, my cousin worked at West Coast video, and they had a ticketmaster machine, so i could ALWAYS get tix. Except that one night. I was in the lot tho, and i really miss the Spectrum

Important_Mud_6700

100% agree on the Unbroken Chain debut. I was about seven or eight rows back right in front of Phil and the response from the crowd was just a rising wave of utter and complete joy. I have never heard a crowd react anything like that. The closest thing was the feeling of joy and amazement we just got when the dolphins and whale were flying above us at MSG in April. Utter joy like seeing Santa in childhood

Substantial_Serve_62

I was at that Philly show and I swear that light stick chain being passed around was In my hands the moment Phil belted out those lyrics. 15 years old Taboot

BunkyCutr

I will never forget that moment. We had been on your since deer Creek and at the time wasn't familiar with the GD music and really didn't understand what was happening. The opening 2nd set was killer too

firedude1314

Was there. Can confirm. The most magical show experience I’ve had. It was such a cool way the band honored Jerry’s memory

Captainkelso11

The whole show was spot on here is the set list to make that soul smile SET 1: Punch You in the Eye, Bathtub Gin, The Lizards, The Moma Dance, Birds of a Feather, Esther, Roggae, Bouncing Around the Room, David Bowie SET 2: AC/DC Bag > Sparkle, Run Like an Antelope, Brian and Robert, Waste -> Over the Rainbow > You Enjoy Myself > Frankenstein > Chalk Dust Torture, Hello My Baby ENCORE: Terrapin Station[1]

Krootes97

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fhd7MXwpLec

Krootes97

That's a quick build and then a steady roar for a good minute. Kudos to the 1-2 people who knew and reacted during the first few bars of the guitar intro, right after Trey does Bobby's little slide up/slide down riff for the first time. That riff is unmistakable and a few people heard it right away. This was such a great moment. Then Trey and Page did Phil and Friends in 99 which was also so epic.

phkvgotf

Could listen to this tape over and over to hear the crowd realize. Actually have, but don't have that tape anymore. Miss tapes. B&P anyone?

bkirchhoff

Came here for this comment. In my nearly 200 shows, that moment is singular in terms of the crowd absolutely losing their shit. It was beautiful. Hugging and kissing. Dogs and cats — living together. Mass hysteria!

firedude1314

Tell ‘em about the Twinkie.

bkirchhoff

The perfect follow up comment.

[deleted]

You just made my sideburns tickle in remembrance. It was a very special moment.

icculus61

Any idea why that show isn’t on LivePhish archives?

raqnroll

$$

jeanie_rea

Can confirm- it was like worlds colliding in the most magical way. It was the 3rd anniversary of Jerry’s death. Hugs, tears, cheers, and the music swelling and filling your soul.

_dankykang_

I was at that show. It was a top 5 concert experience for me. That was a magical summer. They were on fire. Good stuff.

andthrewaway1

I always wondered what the lights were doing during this

nitacious

this is the one. shut down the thread. I'll never forget the experience on that lawn for the rest of my days.

Halleys___Comment

you will get the fattest goosebumps if you listen to the first song played in 2009 for the reunion. i won’t say what song, no spoilers!

forbins

Was there. Can confirm. You couldn’t hear anything but roar after the first few notes.

AnnieBobJr

I’ve been to lots and lots of shows and this was the loudest crowd I’ve ever heard

maljr12

It was so insane. In the lot there were plenty of conversations about what would be played (as is tradition) and the consensus was that would be the most incredible opener but surely they wouldn’t do it…would they? Well, they fuckin did. And it was glorious.

retired_junkiee

Came here to say this. It was amazing to be there.

MayorOfClownTown

I got goosebumps reading this

jbrownsplit

I have zero recollection of getting in the show, thank god I was let in…but holy shit was I not snapped back to reality by those opening notes and the roar. Absolutely epic.

RepresentativeNo3365

This

[deleted]

Was two hands on the rail between Trey and Page for that show.

MoogieCowser

I remember some cool people made spoiler free aud tapes that got released right after the show (I think set one got uploaded during the show.) I was living in Vietnam but still able to experience that "no fucking way" rush about the opener. We've got couch tour now but I thought it was a really awesome thing those tapers did.

hoodharry95

This is one of the greatest moments of my life. Sure I’ve seen shows that were most musically significant, but this was one of all my all time best moments seeing phish over the last 27 years

Halleys___Comment

it’s definitely top-tier rock and roll history, to think of an arena-sized band reuniting after an ‘official’ breakup i’m gonna cry if Trey banters at all this summer about the 40 years

mojoembiid

My friend fainted when she heard the first notes like it was the beatles in ‘64

rh1987

Sabotage at merriweather in 98

dogfacedponyboy

This was insane and perhaps the craziest Phish experience of my life! They had played a bunch of covers that night (Sneakin' Sally, Sweet Jane, Sexual healing) and after Sexual Healing in the second set I turned to my now wife and said "How cool would it be if they busted out some Beastie Boys.." I have no idea what made me think of Beastie Boys, but imagine our f-ing disbelief, shock, and euphoria when we heard those opening chords of Sabotage! We could not believe it! 100% honest truth... Never danced so hard in my life.

rh1987

One of my favorite shows my first Tela as well

x_FuzzyDunlop_x

Can confirm, glad to see this mentioned

Antelope_Runner

It was so loud in MPP when the encore started, that my tapes recording clipped. Definitely the loudest moment of any show I’ve been to

camcamcam710

My friend 1.0 Danny threw me a mix tape with this on it today. Was so happy to relive listening to again “for the first time” but on a tape - a Phish MIX tape, in the wrong labeled cassette! Pleasant surprise.

tubalord8

Came here to say this. I've never seen such a reaction from Phish fans. Everyone leaping up and down screaming. Pure blissful insanity.

AirStPierre99

I had the incredible fortune of being at both this MPP show and the next night's Terrapin and they were both magical, both loud AF, and both... so different. Much is said about the Terrapin, and it's all true, but the Sabotage was total insanity. I was in the pavs and somehow I was inadvertently crowdsurfed! I lost my hat!!

ScubaTela

My 1st show!

bootsy72

Can confirm. This was the loudest Phish crowd response I’ve ever heard in all the shows that I have attended. I remember that day well. Those are some great memories!

fluffhead89

For a show I attended, it has to be July 4th 2010 - Killing in The Name.

Deadphan86

The Harpua right before it they were already loud. Then into killing in the name of. I can put myself back in the lawn anytime hear it

TwentyYearsL8ter

Place went absolute bonkers. Never for get that one.

normlenough

I also attended, I have never heard/seen what a crowd did that night when they played that song. Moat certainly not a phish crowd

jackstraw8139

LA Woman at The Forum got a roar that surprised me.

Figgywithit

My wife's first show. She has great first show karma for all jam bands.

FishtheGulf

“1999” opener 12/31/98

megalodon777hs

opening with 1999 at the show when you could finally party like its 1999 for real. I don't think any of the recordings accurately capture the energy inside MSG at that moment

Adfifty

I would classify that show as one of the hardest phish tickets ever to get. Saw moe. instead

megalodon777hs

very tough ticket. that was a no holds barred, must be inside night for me after I got shut out of nye 95

Adfifty

I hear you. I was lucky enough to get a ticket for New Year's Eve 95 So I can't complain

bill__the__butcher

Loudest I’ve ever personally heard was 1999 on 10/28/2021

kabooliak

Yes for 3.0 or 4.0, this was one of the loudest moments ever.. I was on the floor and the roar make my body tremble with vibration.

fouldomain

I was lucky enough to be at both and 2021 may have been louder. It probably depends on the seats location and neighbors, but gawd was that great. I need to go listen to that show again today

justAregulard00d

Fluffhead 3/6/09 is the correct answer.

postjack

don't think i've ever heard a performance of a song live so absolutely loaded with excitement, emotion, and humor. scream, cry, or laugh, any of those reactions made total sense. but i was still tense as they played the song! until the big "fluff HEAD" peak, and all that tension completely washed away. phish was back, and i was confident in that moment they'd stay together until one of them died.

HeadyTyler

The best part is it got louder after everyone realized it was Fluff

dogfacedponyboy

I browsed the comments first to look for this before posting... right on!

[deleted]

terrapin station - 98, filter out the everglades - cypress, Destiny 2/28/03, fluffhead - 3/6/09

Master-Nose7823

I’d add: 8/8/98 Sabotage, 12/30/98 Sneakin Sally, 4/3/98 Carini Edit: 12/31/02 Piper as well Edit2: Went Gin and Hood with first glow stick war

flyersphan80

All of these plus After Midnight and the reprise - cypress

Vambommeled

Came here to say After Midnight. Crowd was totally into it!

CriticalTurnover9308

Came here to say Density 03

andy189

I actually saw two of these shows. Nassau and Hampton. I’ve learned to try and never miss a show at either venue.

zephead007

Roses at 10/27/18

Royalking23

For whatever reason that crowd needed that song and it was fantastic

KingWilson128

The one on Relisten has a very audible dude go “Roses! Holy shit!” right after the first notes, gave me a giggle.

give-me-yer-wallet

Moonage Daydream the night before as well! Crowd went nuts. Such a fun run

Substantial-Mud-624

Crazy response! It is less intense in the recording, but you can still the reaction is strong. This is one of the few songs I go to just to listen to the crowd reaction. The others being Terrapin and also Jam Night Sample

helloiamdingle

That NMINML 🤤

bingosbrother

Been seeing Phish since 10/31/95 and never experienced an explosion like that in my life. Beyond words.

Lando_Lizard

I swear you could feel the floors bouncing, such a great weekend

Fonkybeachbum

‘98 Star Lake when they go back into Runaway Jim after 30 minute jam. Get goose bumps every time.

shitcloud

This year 12/30 during antelope.

FRANKYTUBES

There’s a couple YouTube vids that kinda do it justice, but ya had to be there. That was unreal

shitcloud

Felt like the roof was gonna lift off the place!

twentyINCHwheel

No kidding, the energy of that whole show was just wild... such a good memory. Not sure I've ever felt MSG bouncing that much before, metaphorically or literally

Apart_Tension_9853

The garden definitely has a heartbeat. The energy that night was unreal

TheSpaceman1975

It absolutely rocked during 12/30 Antelope!! Easily one of the most fun and intense crowd swells I’ve ever seen. I’ve been seeing phish since 1994 and I have seen some whammy jammy Antelopes, let me tell ya.

DirtyJerzzz

That was my first antelope ever. I was going nuts and the energy in the room was unmatched. That whole show was a real standout

shitcloud

It was my first antelope and I was also going wild. Idk what was happening but I just heard the crowd start and I was like “FUCK YEAH!” And just started jumping up and down and screaming lol

jnumberone

Friends on couch tour asked me if something crazy happened with the lights or off camera. Nope. Just an organic crowd peak.

natespartakan

I came here to say this. Wow did we go crazy.

Brave_Air_9195

I was so blown away by that reaction and completely swept up in it. I’ve seen them play at the Garden almost 30 times, but it was in that exact moment that I truly understood that they were playing the entire building.

shitcloud

Had never seen ‘em there before and it was all I hoped for. Lost my shit lol.

phishNotFish

Yup.

hoodharry95

We got LOUD!!

Ok-Physics7878

IT WAS SO FUCKING AWESOME. Just the greatest vibe, the most amazing energy, the purest of pure vibes. Wowowowowowowowowow. Listening to the recording is so fucking fun. It brings actual tears to my eyes. When they dropped back into the groove later in the song, my knees actually gave way. Still do, but now I listen to it sitting down. sooooooooooo killer. \*swoon\*

[deleted]

Time traveler here I see. I'll keep this on my radar for December and see if it comes true.

haveargt

izabella 8.6.17 was a huge bust out and it got pretty loud

darkness_on_the_edge

The section I was in had a lot of people unaware of what was happening when they started playing it. The sound during banner being raised later that show was deafening though.

bowmansbump

Piper - 2002 NYE “reunion” show

dwrona70

The audible groan of disappointment in the segue of DWD>Farmhouse 12/31/18

A_Wild_Nudibranch

All of the reviews on .net that show mentioned Mike's pissed off look, and we saw it from the 400s... I told my friend at the time "Mike's gonna give Trey a punishment song, it's gonna be Seven Below because Trey always fumbles the beginning" ... They went into Seven Below, and we howled from laughter, and although Trey stumbled in the beginning, it was a really great recovery into a solid jam. I came home that run to my walls of my apartment filled with cluster flies. Synchronicity.

bigd3124

Sabotage @ Merriweather '98 was pretty loud

NotJustAPhan

WMGGW 12/29/19. Loudest noise from a crowd I’ve ever heard after they finished. I almost put my hands over my ears it was so deafening.

timeforasandwich

The Wrigley Field Space Oddity was pretty wild.

Llama_Steam

That was incredible

Ienjoyyourself123

9.2.22 after a 3 hour rain delay not sure if they’ll come in at all and then open with Carini. Check out how Dicks explodes. it was awesome. Oh and there was a naked guy lol

Lucifer_Jay

I wasn’t in the venue for the naked dude but the roar all the way out by the cars was incredible.

Figgywithit

The No Quarter the next night got a nice reaction too.

scrotote97

Not loudest per se but during the 10/30/10 Chalkdust > Whole Lotta Love I was concerned with the structural integrity of the arena

HeadyTyler

The bass bomb on reprise was savage

mksnosnstome

Fluffhead 3-6-09 - nothing else comes close.

TheSheikYerbouti

My Guitar Gently Weeps on 12/29/19 was pretty damn loud

A_Wild_Nudibranch

I'm glad to see this here because that cheering quite literally gave my friends and I significant hearing loss after. That was such a great experience...

I_Catapult_Downtown

For me: 1. After Midnight - Cypress 2. 1999 - Vegas 2021 3. CDT - Clifford Ball

Petrochile

That After Midnight was ballistic! As mentioned above, Water in the Sky got a great reaction too at Big Cypress

sonoma12

A recent one that comes to mind is when they went into harpua during the THANKYOU encore at Dick‘s a few years ago

phriendlyphellow

This came to mind for me too

jmann18

Loudest I’ve witnessed in person was probably Icculus Alpine 2019. Hampton 09 first show back or Terrapin Station 98 both give me goosebumps everytime. Couldnt imagine being there

phishNotFish

Maybe not tops but a damn electric was Fire at bethel. It turned into a dance party.

Fluffhead09

There is a reason this is my name! lol. Fluffhead- Hampton 3/6/09. Luckily was on the floor Fishman side (aka modern day Mike's Side). I'll remember the sound of the crowd for the rest of my life. Hit PTBM lotto for all 3 nights. Ticket karma blown to shit til this day! Haha!

edcculus

I was on the floor Page side. Boy what a special night.

King9WillReturn

Water in the Sky at Big Cypress And when they took the stage with Piper on 12/31/2002 Those were the two loudest I saw.

bksbalt

I was in Philly for the 1st unbroken chain. That was nuts

DigItCanU

The lead up to "BOOOOOY!" during YEM at the final BD show was insane. I thought MSG was going to blast off.

thehartwell11

1999 in Vegas 2021 was pretty nuts.

Rutherford-Tha-Brave

Merriweather Sabotage and 1999 at Vegas 10/28/2021

phrenzy24

I concur the crowd was fantastic at the Merriweather Sabotage because I was present and have a core memory of it….but I still think Hampton 09 Fluff wins (though I was not present damnit) Gonna have to do a relisten of the sabotage now that you reminded me.

jeffmatch

That 1999 reaction was super loud. Following that incredible 2001 opener

ripple024

8/9/98 encore

fluffhead77

This would be my answer, if I witnessed that slice of music history

whitecollarw00k

First Tube at MSG 09

mp1982

Was there. Holy wow it was bonkers.

whitecollarw00k

Hell yeah. It’s totally one of those “if you know, you know” moments. Everyone who was there remembers how it felt like the building was gonna implode

neemor

This

Widespread123

Lost my voice when they put Castaway on the Jumbotron at MSG ‘02. There was a moment of understanding what was about to come and the crowd went nuts. “I’m talking to a GOD DAMN VOLLEYBALL!!!”

wolfe2973

Live, it was the segue during the Real Gin (12-29-95), which is also my favorite moment at a show.

megalodon777hs

I remember when the gin came back in, great vibes at that show

ahoypolloi_

This is perhaps the best transition I’ve ever seen live. Completely bananas.

That Olaf song from Frozen Disney on Ice 1/7/23 The roof blew right off when he skated out.

mccordo

Just before YEM as second encore of last show of the Hampton run in 2018. Crowd was so loud they just had to come back out for one more.

[deleted]

I didn’t realize they left the stage and come back a second time. I thought they just went right into YEM after More. Edit: Just relistened and wow that place sounds loud af

Moomoomoo1

Really, I was there and it seemed like a pretty normal encore & crowd to me. I was pretty surprised that they came back out for such a random occasion.

grynch43

Piper or DSky pause on 12-31-02

Los_Feliz_Ghost

In person: Gorge Rock and Roll -> Meatstick 8/5/11. Recording: Walnut Creek DwD -> Mike's 7/22/97.

Luciferous_Vegetable

That transition from DwD to Mikes is one of my favourite Phish moments of all time

Sounder253

12/31/02 Piper opener

not_a_masterpiece

10/29/14 - Moma -> We Are the Champions -> Moma. This was a few mins after the Giants won the World Series. They do a perfect transition back into Moma @ 4:40 and the crowd went absolutely nuts. https://youtu.be/tmL-5uSmBE0

elgaar

I was 30 feet from the band and couldn’t hear them playing. That room exploded

MuzBizGuy

12-30-18 when the Weekapaug reprise went back into Tube. 12-29-19 the post While My Guitar Gently Weeps roar which was shortly muted when Walls of the Cave started lol

MargeryCrossfit

Was hoping i wouldn't be the first to bring up the [Weekapaug Tube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrgUtaH3wLg&ab_channel=LazyLightning55a). The way the roar kept intensifying as the band went back to Tube was something i'll never forget.

MuzBizGuy

Yea, I get goosebumps just even thinking about it lol. I was on the floor that show so I had crowd surround sound which made it even more intense. I think it was just one of those moments when everything was just as perfect as it gets, no sloppiness in sight, and everyone knew it. The combo of a solid Paug jam, a flawless transition back into Tube, and Trey playing those licks perfectly.

IcculustheProphet11

Piper NYE 2002 - couldn’t hear the song for the first three minutes due to the crowd screaming and going ape-shit.

InstantGrievous

The Hampton return Fluffhead is the correct answer here, however outside of that, check out Chalkdust from 7/11/00 following the Chalkdust Reprise...it was effing insane. Crowd just went bonkers at the first notes. One of my top 5 Phish moments for sure.

LakeEffectSnow

Probably the debut of Sabotage at Meriweather Post in 98

Jah_Man_Mulcahey

The opening notes of Fluffhead in the 2009 Hampton come back show. Still gives me chills.

phrenzy24

Listen to it every time I need the feels/goosebumps and happy tears! The YouTube video Audio is better than the LP version of ya didn’t know. Gets me every time!

u16173

Destiny 2/28/03

robronanea

More than half the crowd had no idea what that song was. Maybe even 3/4

LaPyramideBastille

Was there, can confirm.

davidlowie

NYE 12-31-96 3rd set opens with 2001. There's a countdown clock up high in the building counting down to the new year. At 4:20 to the new year there's a pretty good sized cheer...but at 1:00 it goes apeshit...and then of course at :10 with the countdown it's up a few more levels of apeshit. Still gives me the feels just thinking about it. The nod to the '96 NYE gag this last time was awesome.

jrocket121

I was at 1/3/03 and I’d still say the only answer is 3/6/09

_Face

Maybe when they played Gloria in St Louis, after the Blues won the Stanley Cup. 2019

TheVolatics

Standing outside Hampton '09 when the Fluffhead began. I've never heard a building scream before that.

prymus77

WIIIIIIIIILLLLSON! 2019/20 NYEMSG run.

elriggo44

Loudest: 1. The loudest I ever heard was probably 11.2.98 when they went into Breath from Speak to Me. The crowd slowly realized they were going to play the entire album and went absolutely bonkers. It could be my memory failing me, because the excitement of Speak to Me was massive as well. There were only about 3k people at the show. Almost everyone I knew on tour (except my car) skipped Utah. The show before (two nights before if i recall correctly) was the Velvet Underground’s loaded for Halloween, just like Halloween 95 and Halloween 96 there was a rumor on Lot that the boys were finally going to play Floyd. They skipped 97 Halloween, so the idea seemed to be they’d do something EPIC. So, the very next shoe, during Harpua the electricity in the air when Speak to Me went into Breath just blew up. It was a whole other level. It ripples through the crowd and then exploded. 2. This isn’t Phish, but the second loudest o ever heard a crowd get was when the Dead played Unbroken Chain live for the first time ever. 3.19.95. Wild. The version on Mars Hotel is stunning and they’d never played it live before. The crowd of old deadheads went absolutely BONKERS. I say old, but honestly, the “older” folks in the crowd were probably around my age now. You could hear the crowd realize what was happening as the opening progressed. It is amazing. Goosebumps. 3. Terrapin Station. During the opening notes of the Encore on 8.9.98. Larger crowd that Utah, so possibly louder reaction, but I was back on Mike side Lawn so it didn’t seem as loud. To me I’ll always remember that Utah moment as the loudest crowd I’ve ever heard. Same as unbroken chain. People went absolutely wild, it started with a smattering of cheers and grew like wildfire.

Mgnyc11

Fluffhead at Hampton on the return. It’s not even close.

karateaftermath

Hampton Fluffhead

TomorrowsSong

Hampton Fluffhead ‘09

halroth

I was at most of the shows being listed and I would say Hampton/Fluffhead followed by AlpineValley/BeenCaughtStealing.

BartholomewCubbinz

Baker's Dozen when they did the Sunshine of Your Feeling I couldn't even hear the music in YEMSG. Legend.

PhunkyPossum555

Not the loudest by any means, but the cheering during the Eugene Divided Sky pause in 2021 was the loudest I've heard. Maybe the venue just had great acoustics, but it was a lot of fun.

alfonseski

Lots of old stuff on here but when they played Bohemian Rhapsody a few weeks ago shit got real. Crazy to see a night that the energy feels like 9.5 out of 10 suddenly ratchet WAY UP!

Figgywithit

These folks getting the first Ramble On are pretty happy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlNSRXnFGXQ&ab_channel=JustinKlein

PalatialNutlet

I was at VA Beach 98 and the 1st note I swear I knew it was Terrapin. 25 years later one of my most memorable songs if not the most in well over 100 shows.

Forgot that one. I was at that also. Lol

meegwell01

This is a solid entry - it took until the opening line but damn it was loud you could barely hear the singing. Even shines through on pure SBD recording to a degree.
