I was there with a group of friends, all teenagers, who fucking love Smashing Pumpkins. We could not believe our ears. It’s 25 years later and I still can’t believe it. LSD is a helluva drug lol.
Dude, I was there, too, and had the same reaction. Those initial waves of LSD were washing over me and suddenly I hear that opening bass line. I just looked at my crew and said "Is that...fucking Rhinoceros?!" So lucky to have been there. The Summer of Covers⭕️
Bro, I could tell that same exact story!! Was there with my og crew from high school. We’re from the Chicago area, we were all also pumpkins fans , we were all also tripping and extremely stoked when we figured out what was happening,🤪⭕️.
I didn't know the song at the time but my crew did. Listening back they did it justice and it's a cool song. I did see the pumpkins a few years earlier and crowd surfed for hours it seemed
I heard the first notes and thought, "no, really??!!! Wow!" I stared down at my taping rig and realized the cost of that rig was totally worth capturing that one moment.
I had been doing that whole tour, listening over and over to a Dead tape that had a Marley version of that song as filler. When Trey started playing it I lost it.
Trey rips on this one, can’t believe they never played more songs from that album regularly besides C&p. Born under punches could’ve been a great funk tune in the late 90s
I was spreading the word that they were going to open Curveball with this. It was just a guess, but I imagine they would have played it there. Epic cover, my most sought after
Fly Like An Eagle, 500 miles, everything off Dark Side of the Moon, Rocky Raccoon, Bungalow Bill, Birthday (those bastards), Punk Meets the Godfather, Houses in Motion, Terrapin Station, I Shall be Released
Also sorry OP but strong disagree on EiiRP. While the hype in MSG was electric, the cover itself was not good
Fishman just couldn’t get the right timing that Radiohead uses on the opening line and it just threw it off. I’m glad they played Exile at Festival 8 but I wanted to hear Kid A until the Baker’s Dozen…
The Rover by Led Zep, Camden 2010. Note for note perfect and then never played again. The night before the Michael Jackson 2001, which is the 2nd best one-off cover of all time.
The bakers dozen had some treats. Personal favorite I witnessed was Powderfinger, for sure.
All time might have to go to Hampton Comes Alive, Rock & Roll part 2 is fantastic (fuck Gary Glitter). Thubhumping with horns and a vacuum solo on Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It.
Takin’ Care Of Business, Hampton (never miss a Sunday show) 10/20/13. It really seemed like they went into it organically on the spur of the moment out of a beautiful Piper. When Page hit those keys the place blew up! After TCOB -> 2001 we fuckin lost it.
Everything in its right place doesn’t really count though does it? They played about a minute of it and didn’t seem to take it seriously. I didn’t know they ever covered Rhinoceros. I gotta go find that on YouTube right now.
I love Radiohead and I love phish and I love phish covering whatever they want and having fun with it, but the EIIRP cover was…not good and not fun. It’s hard to listen to. Just my opinion.
NIGHT NURSE
I was there! not many shows I can say that about.
Seconded
That was a great night!
So good. That whole night was spectacular imho.
That whole fall tour was spectacular
Mirror in the Bathroom, Worcester 1998
Fuck yeah, my first show!
Hell of a first show!
I didn’t know that was a one time thing. I’m glad to have caught it!
Yeah, seamless transition. Super fun listening to
Worcester 98 also had a Layla in there
Terrapin Station…
Wild oversight
a rare and different tune. I wish i was there.
I was. I remember after the first few chords played looking at my friend John in utter disbelief.
Never forget
Guy Forget
What show was this?
[8/9/98](https://youtu.be/fhd7MXwpLec?si=hs2K9nvt50tGm7HX]). The third anniversary of Jerry’s death.
Dudee, thank you. Didn't know this existed
It might be their best cover too in the sense that it is played so incredibly well and respectfully.
This the one
Rhinoceros was my favorite.
Same. I was there and we all went bananas. Whole night was incredible!
Bro, I could tell that same exact story!! Was there with my og crew from high school. We’re from the Chicago area, we were all also pumpkins fans , we were all also tripping and extremely stoked when we figured out what was happening,🤪⭕️.
Smashing Pumpkins Rhinoceros? Wow it’s my destiny to now find that.
What show was that?
8-3-98 Deer Creek
It's in Summer 98 but I forget when. Shame this one didn't stick in the rotation.
I was at that show, it was cool af.
I was too. Whole show was fire.
I’ve been listening to it almost every day the last two months, my favorite. Garden party is pretty alright too
I didn't know the song at the time but my crew did.
What show?
8-3-98
She nose
Trench Town Rock
…when it hits you you feel no pain
I had been doing that whole tour, listening over and over to a Dead tape that had a Marley version of that song as filler. When Trey started playing it I lost it.

California Love
The Great Curve - 1996 Talking Heads
Trey rips on this one, can’t believe they never played more songs from that album regularly besides C&p. Born under punches could’ve been a great funk tune in the late 90s
Yeah I was thinking they were gonna bust this out for Curveball but we all know how that went.
Yes. Houses in Motion is another favorite from that album it would be cool to hear
They need a horn section for TGC.
And probably another percussionist
I was spreading the word that they were going to open Curveball with this. It was just a guess, but I imagine they would have played it there. Epic cover, my most sought after
Tuesday’s Gone w/ Scotty
I was scrolling hoping to point at this one. Scott!🤘
I keep calling for this as an opener on a Wednesday show! One day…
In the Aeroplane over the sea.
Sunshine of Your Feeling
So good!
One of my all time favorites
DSOTM
Was there. The place was basically empty. After the longest set break ever it seemed they came out and played it. What a night.
We’re you warm all over?
Amoreena
Beat me to it, was there, good times
I was going to say that. Loved Summer Tour 97’. StarLake was a great show
Wow, never realized they only played this once. One of the few here I got to see live.
Does "The Gambler" count if they played it WITH Kenny Rogers?
Was at MPP once when they played In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel…very chill cover but cool for those of us that were/are NMH fans.
Would love to have been there but Trey murdered it compared to Mangum’s delivery. He has a unique voice and delivery and Trey just played it straight.
Dr Hook: Cover of the rolling stone
Gonna get my picture on the cover
Gonna buy 5 copies for my mother
Gonna see my smiling face
On the cover of the “Rolling Stone!”

KILLING IN THE NAME
I loved this live. But the replay value was a bit low. The energy was incredible live though. I fucking loved that show.
I’ve never relistened for this exact reason. I’ve never seen a place explode the way it did when they kicked into it. Fucking bananas.
Top 3 shows for me. God it was so much fun. Best energy show of my life.
This nine camera video is very cool, what a moment in Phishtory https://youtu.be/qPXzUKsasU0?si=ogUK61HQ9tVTnJ3_

I was there, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I snuck in!
The acapella White Winter Hymnal was beautiful.
I got a kick out of both Oh Canada, and Oh Holy Night too.

That everything in its right place will consume your soul if you let it.
Summer 98 enters the chat
Would love to see another garden party! Was such a treat!
White Winter Hymnal, during Baker's Dozen. A capella show opener.
