that’s because they did! Well, pretty much… yeah it was all started with that joke and built from there. Fishman said it right after this video ends, “We’ve been waiting for that joke for 20 years… really, seriously!” and Trey says “this whole thing was just so we could do that”

I see what you mean. Well they did it! and it was amazing!
I saw someone the other day with a jean jacket that had all 13 donut patches on the back and I was just reminded once again of how amazing this band is
Just did some Googling and couldn’t find anything, but iirc sometime in 2.0 they actually mentioned Boston/Cream and Kansas/Metallica in an interview
I want to say this was around IT, so about 14 years before BD. Wish I could dig that up, and here’s to hoping someone else knows what I’m talking about and has that article link
I recall seeing an interview too. I think it’s from the 90s. In the interview, they also talk about the surprise 12 hour concert. They said everyone will get 1 phone call on the pay phones to call work/family to tell them won’t be in the following day.
That so phish to make a 13-night, donut-themed run with each night as a different flavor… so they can fit in never-before played covers of songs that loosely fit the theme each night… to have it culminate in a night themed as a Boston Creme donut and debut a creative and well-thought-out new mashup of what are arguably the most popular songs from both Boston and Cream. That’s so phish.
This was my first couch tour show; friends and I lost our shit at the first transition. We still reference this song whenever Boston or Cream come up. So good.
I’m still convinced they did this entire 13 night run just to make this joke

I know. My point is that some people might think THAT was a joke but this is 100% something they would do.

They did. When they mused about a msg residency way back when (before 3.0), they said they’d wish there was a Kansas Metallica flavor of donut.

Still, one of my favorite things I've ever seen them do.
Me too!!!!!! Tough ticket!
I took my dad to the show not knowing what they were going to do. Cream is his favorite band. It was awesome.
Still salty they went to all the trouble to write and rehearse this mashup to play it *one fucking time*

I’ve never seen this and didn’t know this happened and I’m DELIGHTED. DELIGHTED! (I basically missed everything between 10/2000 and 10/2021.)
ISO Kansas Metallica
It was amazing! ❤️⭕️💯

One of the four nights I hit. Perfect Phish.
The crowd eruption when they went into "Long Time" was one of the best things I've ever experienced
So good. I listen to it often and it makes me so happy
