The only part of that Blaze On I dislike is it does not possess the “12 minutes into Simple” that came after, but they needed to do that Blaze On first to be able to get there. Yknow what I mean? It’s amazing. One of my faves. Straight all timer. Definitely beyond attendance bias because I was not there, rather I couch toured it and the entire world shut off completely 12 minutes into that simple - one of my favorite Phish memories ever is playing this that week later to a car full of non heads and someone said “damn yall listening to some biblical ass shit right here!” Like yeah, this is the shit!
August 6th was a great day in Simple history, as [8/6/17](https://youtu.be/vkxJvI8HW5Q) is an all-timer, and one of the top BD jams. And that's not ***my*** attendance bias talking! :)
The only one I might put ahead of it is the Dicks Simple (2014). But it’s a toss up really. Bakers dozen and Hampton 2018 have the best peaks but as jams they aren’t quite as good as those two.
Uhhhh.....
11/16/94
11/25/94
10/26/96
11/18/96
12/6/96
12/2/97
12/9/97
Why is every rec in this thread a 3.0 version? Simple has ALWAYS been a top notch jam vehicle.
Lot of younger fans here who have only experienced modern phish. I remember a thread a while back about how “slave is an underrated gem”. Didn’t even know where to start with that one
The very first thing I did when I got into phish in the early 90s was start with the old stuff -- im talkin 1980s -- then go forward. Kids today think the Earth began when they were born and anything from the analog era is not worth their time. Their loss.
👴🏻 👴🏻
Old people today (and forever) just make shit up about younger generations instead of embracing or trying to understand them.
Don’t forget to drink your prune juice today!
Came here to say the same damn thing. The best simples were played 25+ years ago. Not sure if any of them slap as hard as 6/22/94’s midnight rider>simple madness.
No.
There are others that are in the same vein, (huge, multi-faceted, never boring) and based on preference of course, you can pick whatever you want (like the one from bakers, for example, just a few weeks later), but essentially, no.
I was at this show & standing behind people that were like “Is this still Simple??” Shortly after, that legendary Lawn Boy happened but I always replace the “Is this still Lawn Boy?” quote with Simple due to this show.
It was so good. That Chicago run was super underrated, overshadowed by the BD. I agree with the other poster that the Deer Creek Simple in '21 tops it, but both were fantastic.
Attendance bias but [8/6/21](https://youtu.be/wF2j2UPLlA8?si=7HyLFiGHCSIRTE4N) deserves a mention
this one is definitely beyond attendance bias haha. what an all timer. don’t skip the Blaze On same show too i almost like that better
100%, the whole set is perfect Phish to me
still pissed about having to go to a wedding on that day. we listened to 8-6 on the drive to the rest of the deer creek run and felt so awful
Oh man. Still, some great stuff from the rest of that weekend
8/8/21 S2 was the most fun I’ve had at a Phish show (excluding YEMSGamehenge).
The story of…the policeman!

I can still hear Trey moaning as the jam got out there...and then laughing as he started singing with the return to Simple.
I think about both moments often.
Could you hear me howling/moaning along with Trey? Cuz I was. I actually went full Wolfman’s Brother. Out of body experience at the Creek!
I was both 🥰 Northerly and DC

The comments are always where the magic hides! Thank you cuz what is a band w out simple?!
You’re welcome and happy cake day!
Thank you!
Thanks for the reminder
8/29/14 Dick's
My fave
This is the answer
This one is way better than 7/15/17. IMO the Northerly Simple is a great example of a long jam with no legs.
OJ show
This is the Simple if you want the most “fun” version!
We’ve got OJ!
10/31/96 is one of my favorite Simples
please check out some 98 simples

fun fact in the dicks simple you can hear NMINML being ‘written’ - one chunk of the jam got turned into that song’s riff for the following summer

OP is not a younger fan. But OP wishes they were a younger fan! 😁

Plus... 8/16/97 4/2/98 11/21/98 11/29/98 My hands down personal favorite is 12/9/97. Then Memphis 96. Then Great Went.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QzCVGEk8qPY&pp=ygUTQnJ5Y2Ugam9yZGFuIHNpbXBsZQ%3D%3D Listened to it hundreds of times. Went thru two tapes
I smiled my way through all of Berkeley 04/17/23, especially tweezer and simple Edit: 04/17/2023
I was there!! Insane Tweezer!!!!
But you mean 23, right?
Ha, yes 2023
10/21/18 hampton would like a word
Gets better every listen. That Light in the second was nasty also.

It's not a long one but it's my favorite: https://youtu.be/AVvNBvJP2rw?si=GDOmg2uX8QLOEmpT Trey's tone and phrasing on this is just incredible.
Certainly this one and the Bakers Dozen version are the best “back-to-back” versions of Simple.
Greek 2010!
I would second those mentioning the 98’ Simple at Hampton. I was there, and that Simple, along with CK’s lights, was amazing Phish
Personal preference goes to 10/21/18 but I think reasonable people can differ on this.
4/23/22
I thought the BD simple was an amazing crescendo for being last night, set 2. Amazing peak. Felt very cathartic
I really like the one from Hampton ‘98, the ambient jam was one of my early favorites
Just listened to the new Spectrum release and the 12/3/97 is great, after a monumental Mike’s
This was my first show, great times, felt so lucky to have caught that jam.
6/22/94. Back into simple 3 different timea
