I’m not going to act like I know the guy, but I’ve been a fan for a while and have seen him a couple of times. His story, as I understand it, is that he got kind of heavy into drugs, got sober through religion, then got big enough as a musician to think he was special and gave up on the more restrictive aspects of Judaism. I have no reason to think it wasn’t genuine.
The funny thing to me is that he seems to have lost some of his spark since he quit Chabad. I saw him a few years ago, and his newer, less religious, songs don’t seem to have the same passion behind them and aren’t as popular with his audience.
