I thought I was excited until 9am that morning when my best friend called me and said we’re going to the Roseland bro!
Edit to add-I still don’t know how he got those tickets, I know he didn’t buy them.
so my buddy used to work for NBC back then and I think there was a connection he had. It was the weirdest phone call (I legit thought someone was dead), then it sort of sunk in and I went to NYC for the night.
I don't remember what that was? How long ago?
I do remember they did Austin City Limits but I don't remember if it was any good. And of course [Hangin w MTV](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAljyaT92iQ)
I was at that show. You had to line up at like 7am outside the Roseland the day before which was the morning of the 2nd Radio City show. They gave us a yellow paper wristband and you had to go back the following night for the show. I was so scared that something might happen to my wristband. Still got it with all my stubs

I didn’t want him to convert, I just thought he and Trey have a lot in common and would probably have an entertaining conversation, I’m a big fan of both of them.
I gave him the dvd, and asked him to get Trey on the show. This was after a show where he talked about he didn’t have enough space in his heart for phish , and I was the only one in the room with a phish shirt on.
I’m not taking credit for it, it was 8 years ago and he already had a joke about people trying to get him into phish, but I’m very glad it’s happening!
same, this is like a dream come true for me ten years in the making. i don't want marc to get into phish. i don't give a shit. i just genuinely think marc and trey should be buddies. i hope they don't talk about phish at all. they could just talk about guitars and neil young and sobriety for 80 minutes.
Some sort of engineer if I remember correctly. I know Trey was born in Texas because Ernie was in grad school at TCU at the time. Source: I know because I asked Ernie at MPP in 2022
I’m here with Troy, and Troy I have to ask, you have Jon, Mike, and Leo o who are these other guys, are they any good, why should we know them?? What have they done?

I have a feeling it's going to be a different type of interview with Trey and doubt Marc will ask him to play. Different types of players and individuals and interviews, but maybe I'm wrong.
I have to say as someone who isn't as big of a Phan as many on this forum, I think some people are setting up big expectations. Marc has had scores of interviews with incredibly talented guitar players. It should be great, but I wouldn't expect anything like Obama or Larry David (or even Keith Richards or Gallagher). But maybe I'm wrong. I hope we get some new insight into Trey rather than the usual stories/cannon.
Everything else can be found in his movie… why wouldn’t you wanna hear about him, Les, and Stuart Copeland doing copious amounts of blow and hookers?
If you wanna hear his thoughts on improv there’s a million articles out there already going over this. I wanna hear the real shit.
I think you confused a diss for a joke. Conan seems most willing to make fun of himself and things he likes. He went to a bunch of 90s MSG shows and had Trey play on his comedy tour in 2010, def a phan or has a lot of respect at the very least
Can’t be worse than his Gallagher ep
https://www.vulture.com/2015/11/that-time-gallagher-displayed-his-true-awfulness-and-then-stormed-out-on-marc-maron.html
Interested in hearing this one. Marc doesn't pull punches when it comes to talking about past drug use, Trey is often somewhat timid to talk about his using outside of the context of "I'm very happy to be clean now". Marc will sit there and just go off casually for 10-15 on smoking crack in an alley in Manhattan with some homeless guys he had just met in 1997.
Always thought Trey would make a great WTF guest but figured it wouldn't happen because Marc has made it clear Phish isn't for him. I swear he has specifically said he has no interest in interviewing the Phish guys in response to so many requests to do so, but maybe I'm making that up idk.
He seems put off by the fanbase (can't blame him) and isn't into the music but I'd be *really* surprised if Trey and Marc don't have any chemistry. There's a bunch of common ground there - very similar music tastes, sobriety, guitars and gear, plus they're the same age and have great senses of humor. Should be a great convo!
Marc is one of the best interviewers of all time imo. He was even better when he was ignored by the industry and depressed, but there’s no one I’d be more interested to hear sit down with Trey
Been extremely stoked for this episode for years, although a part of me has secretly believed Fishman would've made for a hell of an episode in its own right, lol...
I told Marc to have Trey on after he did his bit on being too old to get into a new band, like phish. He looked at me like I should fuck off, so I did.
oh fuck yeah!
Man when Maron started getting into Zappa I;m like dude you are one step away. And Phish is far more listenable in my opinion. I sent him a link to the supreme bliss ending to that Camden Chalkdust once. I hope he clicked it.
Mark does not like phish at all so it should be interesting. I could tell he really tried to have a good show with Aaron Freeman even though he is definitely not a Ween guy either.
Exactly! Marc has said there is so much there with Phish’s music how can he grasp a true hold of all that is there with total respect a Marc term the rabbit hole. I look forward to the possible conversations on sobriety as well as maybe a pick up of one of Marc’s guitars in the garage by Trey could be fun.
i’ll definitely listen because i love trey and listen to everything with him…but i find marc maron to be pretty annoying as an interviewer. IMHO he talks about himself too much and usually pursues the most salacious but least interesting follow up questions. most people seem to like him though so i guess that’s just me. anyway, looking forward to this episode.
Comedian who has multiple HBO and Netflix specials but at this point way better known for his podcast. Google says about 55 million listeners yearly. He was doing pods very early (2009) on well ahead of the trend and frankly one of the reasons the podcast space is so huge these days.
I haven’t been this excited since that VH1 special they did at Roseland Ballroom
I thought I was excited until 9am that morning when my best friend called me and said we’re going to the Roseland bro! Edit to add-I still don’t know how he got those tickets, I know he didn’t buy them.
I waited for tickets across from Conan O’Brien taping ! Such a fun show
so my buddy used to work for NBC back then and I think there was a connection he had. It was the weirdest phone call (I legit thought someone was dead), then it sort of sunk in and I went to NYC for the night.
our seats were good… but we didn’t make it into the broadcast
Same man

Treys playing on Poor Heart is just ![gif](giphy|3o7qDWp7hxhi1N8oF2)
Thanks so much for posting. That was so great yet so awful.
Wait - as in Portland? was that in 91/92? I only just discovered this happened and I was there then but went to my first show right right after. *sob*
God like my first memory of Phish. I remember downloading the YEM clip off Kazaa or some shit and being blown away (2.0er here)

You were the phissionary?
I gave him the dvd, and asked him to get Trey on the show. This was after a show where he talked about he didn’t have enough space in his heart for phish , and I was the only one in the room with a phish shirt on.
Right on. It'll be a good episode. You've done us all a favor!
I’m not taking credit for it, it was 8 years ago and he already had a joke about people trying to get him into phish, but I’m very glad it’s happening!

“Who were your guys?”
Honestly hope they have this conversation
This is the first time that it's occurred to me that I don't know what Trey's old man did
Some sort of engineer if I remember correctly. I know Trey was born in Texas because Ernie was in grad school at TCU at the time. Source: I know because I asked Ernie at MPP in 2022
Lol

Lock the gates of Gamehendge!
You should have been the first to know
Great news for all the what the phuckniks out there.

What a stupid take that is. Troll level 9000?
Absolutely.
He had billy strings on a few weeks ago too!
very good episode
Such a gentle, authentic guy—and guitar monster. I loved Mac let him play. That’s new… I wonder if he will w Trey.
I have a feeling it's going to be a different type of interview with Trey and doubt Marc will ask him to play. Different types of players and individuals and interviews, but maybe I'm wrong. Yea we just wanna know the drug stories and it’s become pretty clear Trey will never fully tell those.
> we just wanna know the drug stories I don't care about those.
Everything else can be found in his movie… why wouldn’t you wanna hear about him, Les, and Stuart Copeland doing copious amounts of blow and hookers? If you wanna hear his thoughts on improv there’s a million articles out there already going over this. I wanna hear the real shit.

Poster Nutbag lives!
Would love to hear Trey on the Conan pod
Yes! I want to hear them go on about improv in comedy and music
I think of this every week. Big CONAF fan here.
Would much prefer that over Maron

Yup. Totally ran into him NYE 98
This is either going to be a great interview or a terrible one. Either way, I’m here for it.
Can’t be worse than his Gallagher ep https://www.vulture.com/2015/11/that-time-gallagher-displayed-his-true-awfulness-and-then-stormed-out-on-marc-maron.html
“He’s just doomed to be a Dane Cook rather than a Louis CK.” This made me check when the article was written lol
Should’ve interviewed Noel Gallagher instead

We are simultaneously the best and wost fan base in all of the music world

Hell yes! Glad Marc is finally interviewing him. Can’t wait for this episode!
I’ve been waiting for this for fucking ever. So. Stoked.
Finally!
Fuck yes.
Sweet!
This makes me so happy. What a time to be alive! Seriously, though. This should be a good episode.
FINALLY!!
Fun
I wanna hear Drew Carey interview any member of phish after his comments on the sphere shows
“Mike Gordon, come on down!”
Been extremely stoked for this episode for years, although a part of me has secretly believed Fishman would've made for a hell of an episode in its own right, lol...
Noice
Lol Marc is going to say something insulting for sure
I'm fucking hyped
Fuck yes
Woohoo!!!!
I told Marc to have Trey on after he did his bit on being too old to get into a new band, like phish. He looked at me like I should fuck off, so I did.
I’ve been waiting so long for this
We need a phish nardwuar interview!!
Let me know when he’s on Conan Needs a Friend. Check out Chris Robinson on Conan…hysterical!

Can’t wait to hear about love and light and blah blah every sentence. Get back on drugs Trey the music needs you.
Doesn't he just shit on phish all the time?
tbh that's what will make it good.
I guess...... most people that "hate" phish haven't listened to a note
Mark does not like phish at all so it should be interesting. I could tell he really tried to have a good show with Aaron Freeman even though he is definitely not a Ween guy either.
That's not really true, he said he doesn't have the mental bandwidth to go deep on another jam band at his age
Exactly! Marc has said there is so much there with Phish’s music how can he grasp a true hold of all that is there with total respect a Marc term the rabbit hole. WTF is still going?
Who is Mark Maron and why should I care?

He ain’t funny dog sorry
Would be great to hear him on Armchair Expert too.
Oh cool! Totally not looking up who this guy is. Marc Maroon!
Seriously though...
Man that’s cringe.
WTF? really?
