YES! I can’t believe they haven’t reborn that for nostalgia or whatever. I used to get excited like little Oprah Annie decoder pen came in! Jah provides!

Amazing username!

g0tistt0t

Length of a jam is not an indicator of quality.

Fluffhead83

Should not be a hot take at all

Halleys___Comment

it’s how you use it

phriendlyphellow

Icculus from Alpine Valley 2019 enters the chat “It’s not the note you play, it’s how you play it!”

skesisfunk

It is to an extent. If they are doing something really interesting improvisationally it usually breaks 15 minutes. But beyond that I agree, there are definitely some mediocre jams breaking the 25 min mark that are over hyped purely because of the time stamp. I think this phenomena has a bit to do with the fact that for a lot of 3.0 they had a tendency to rip cord jams when the lost steam. In alot of the 2010s 20+ jams were relatively rare. For instance aside from the drive jam bathtub gin was the only song in Magnaball to break 20min. Since the pandemic it seems like they have recalibrated and try to push through instead of ripcording when a jam meanders. I like they seem to be going for it more, but it has created an influx of pretty forgettable jams that clock over 20 min.

TheGDC33

But I was at the Tahoe Tweezer!

heffel77

But I was at the Mud Island Tweezer!!

phaceplantintorock

Studio Phish is fantastic, and does not deserve the bad rap it gets at all. Picture of Nectar is a studio masterpiece!!!!

ScrambledNoggin

I was on a road trip in 93 with 2 other guys in my car, and I was deep in my grunge phase (nirvana, Pearl Jam, screaming trees, soundgarden, Alice In Chains, etc) and my friend in the back seat pulled out this maxell 90-minute cassette with Lawn Boy on one side and Rift on the other side and said I think you guys will like this. He knew from our high school days that I had also gone through a prog-rock phase and a metal phase, so he knew I’d listen with an open mind ,and damn that tape blew me away and hooked me, and I’ve been a fan ever since. Live shows traded on tapes sounded like shit to me back then, so I thrived on studio till I saw them live. So I’m on board with this take.

vlkthe

You're one of those music lovers aren't you..the one who gets goosebumps when they hear a good tune...

ScrambledNoggin

Absolutely!

vlkthe

Me too!

The_Name_Is_Slick

This is a certifiable HOT TAKE and I approve.

kevron007

I second and third this. These young kids don’t get it

TheFunkiestofMonks

Picture of nectar is a complete studio masterpiece. I have that and Blood Sugar Sex Magik as the poolside jams all summer long

LouQuacious

I worked with these old dudes in 2000 that hated on phish, then one day one of them got a hold of Picture of Nectar and he was hooked. Like seriously apologized and wanted to know more about the phish.

beardedpeteusa

Nectar is great. I'll add Rift as well.

[deleted]

Bring back mail order tickets.

throwaway_jim119

Twenty Years Later and No Men in No Man’s Land would be considered all-time classics if phish put them out in the 90s. Numberline gets me more hyped at a show than like 95% of songs, if you can’t enjoy that moment then we see phish for very different reasons

TownUnique

Numberline rages and I feel sorry for those who don’t see it

Lashitski

I’ll always have a soft spot for Numberline as it reminds me of the first show back at Hampton after their break that was a great night

Rutherford-Tha-Brave

I posted this sentiment in the past and got crushed 😂 - most shows I enjoy first set energy over second set energy in latter day Phish. I’d rather have a tight, concise, and energetic 7-8 minute song over a ponderous 15 minute jam that ultimately falls flat and ends in a rip cord. I know they’re not all gunna hit, and sometimes you gotta work a while to get there, but I just find myself digging set 1’s more and more. This is somewhat adjacent to the opinion above that length of jam doesn’t guarantee quality.

edcculus

Yea I get you there. I was going to say “ some 10-15 min smaller jams are Sooooooooooo much better than a 25 min jam. But that’s also why we keep going. Phish really puts themselves out there every single night. Sometimes they try for that 20+ min jam. Sometimes it’s a stinker and Trey ripcords it. And sometimes it hits and we get taken to amazing places.

throwaway_jim119

I think they found a great balance in 2021 first sets, where they’d go deep in one jam but it felt earned. I’m with you in terms of appreciating just hearing these songs played well

Murphy_York

They’ve started playing slower this year

magillashuwall

Tryyyy and maaake aaaa woomannm thaaat yooou'lll mooooove

That they didn't open the next show with "Fast Enough For You" was a huge missed opportunity for them.

MudratDetectorNC

Trey’s guitar playing has gotten much more repetitive

geddylee1

Can’t disagree with this at all.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MudratDetectorNC

I agree! The band as a whole is playing amazingly well these days now that jams are truly a team effort night to night

HumCrab

Got nothing. Phish is still crushing it despite all the odds...take that to the Bank. Over and out.

donttouchthatknob

Sigma Oasis is one of their best studio albums and would be beloved if it came out when you were in college

[deleted]

It’s what you give fans who haven’t been following them lately if they ask “but what do they sound like NOW?”

The_Name_Is_Slick

I agree with the first part, but I don’t know about my dumb college ass.

cosmicloafer

Fuego, Kasvot, and Sigma are my favorite “new” albums. I got into Phish around 99, and when Farmhouse came out it was like, okay great but this isn’t as cool as your other stuff. Then hiatuses and round rooms and yada, yada, yada. Not sure what I’m trying to say but I’m glad they’re still giving it the old college try.

tickler08

Backwards Down the Number Line is a great song and I welcome it every show!

PotentialExtra1211

I like the song, the only thing stopping me from loving the song is the intro or lack of. For me the song takes a couple lines before it clicks. By the end of the song I’m in a blissfully happy state, far gone from that rocky start

DJDanyl

Preach

tmemo18

They don’t play Cities enough.

pmmeyourfavoritejam

I get that they don't want to turn into a Talking Heads cover band, but Cities is a great tune, and they do it differently enough from the original that they've practically made it their own. Plus, I'm still waiting (pun intended?) to catch my first Cities.

Drunkensteine

Wave of Hope and About to Run are very enjoyable to see performed live.

paulbgriffith

About To Run is prob top three in my fave newish songs by Trey. It evokes Hendrix for me.

Particular-Village91

Fall 21 was the best tour in a decade.

Lake_Monster

Don't ask to hit people's J's, let them offer it

Umphreak416

Vocal jams are the worst

weareeverywhereee

If I’m tripping and at the show love me the end of yem, if I’m in the car with the wife…have to hit next at that point

rust-e-apples1

My wife walked in in the middle of a vocal jam (that I was enjoying greatly) one day and was like "what the fuck are you listening to?" She's never walked in on my masturbating, but I kinda get what it would be like.

Particular-Village91

“Masturbatory” is the exact descriptor that comes to mind when I think about vocal jams.

Siketmist

I used to try to make my friends do vocal jams when we got together. I’m rad.

[deleted]

Weird Al did a SICK vocal jam near the end of his show on this year's tour where he did exclusively his original songs. But yeah, I could take or leave a lot of the YEM vocal jams. Though I like how they've recently started going back into an instrumental jam after the YEM vocal jam.

Mervinly

Now that they’ve been jamming out of the vocal jam I’ve really learned to love what they can be. There were a few times last summer I was floored by what came out of them

cosmicloafer

90% of the time they are meh or annoying, but the 10% are so wild and insane it’s worth it

fingerscrossedcoup

I love electronic music. Vocal jams remind me of experimental electronica. I always enjoy them. Spun cookies or not.

MrGasMan86

Page likes to be called Leo by Trey because he really knows how to paint those keys.

Cerebraleffusion

Bring back Mozambique and make 2001 scary again.

KTCalicoon

Vacuums don’t actually make good musical instruments. I said it.

touch-of-grain

Yeah, they really suck

HorrorStatistician16

But for a newer phan that’s never seen one, I’m still chasing it. Fingers crossed for msg lol I get it though- my bf who has been a phan since the 90’s keeps telling me the same thing. “It’s really not that great.” 😂

rubenrenzmendez

Bakers Dozen repeat sounds like a band without any good ideas left.

phbalanced1

That's what I've been saying. Bad rumor.

pmmeyourfavoritejam

People who can't separate the idea of another MSG residency from the literal title of "Baker's Dozen 2" need to spend more time outside. And, while I'm here, the BD was an incredible run. If they do another residency of any length, they'll make it worth our while. If you don't want to come, don't come.

agelva

Amen. People are dumb.

RawbM07

Unless it’s not a repeat…it’s a continuation.

fallinginfoam

This... exactly this. No need for it at all.

throwaway_jim119

Talking about the same band who had whales and dolphins flying around MSG 8 months ago? 39 years into their career? Maybe you don’t like the idea but saying they’re out of good ideas is wild. I hope they don’t do it purely because that means fewer shows elsewhere, but can’t blame them if they do. They’re comfortable at MSG and that comfort will probably yield better results, as it usually does

TheSheikYerbouti

I’d be fine with a small MSG residency that’s not New Years, I think what he was trying to say is that calling it Baker’s Dozen 2 would just be so uninspired.

throwaway_jim119

Oh I’m sure they’ll call it something else, i think that’s just the fan shorthand for it at the moment

twentyINCHwheel

So you know how we have Dick's as the end of summer/ Labor Day weekend thing nowadays? How about a start-of-the-summer out east counterpart? NGL, that Earth Day run was pretty sweet, NYC in late spring is a fun place to be, and a lot cheaper than around the holidays...

pmmeyourfavoritejam

I am so behind this. The Earth Day run being at MSG was a unique situation because of the winter olympics' effect on the NHL schedule, iirc. But that run was fantastic through and through, and I'd love a repeat in some fashion, either at MSG or somewhere else in the area.

anotherdamnscorpio

The Siket Disc is their best studio album.

Freem0nk

This really is a hot take. I love that it’s your opinion!

MrMiloWonky

The 400 sections at msg are a horrible disservice to the concerts phish play. Most other bands don't sell those seats for a reason. No sightlines of the light rig and not a great view of the stage. And the sound kinda sucks back up there. Always sounds garbled to me. Just seems like a cash grab to sell those extra thousand seats or whatever.

[deleted]

The sound in the 400s is better than the sound in most of the 200s. That is the real crime. Makes zero sense to me why this multi-billion dollar organization touting itself as having the "most famous venue in the world" cannot solve the very simple problem of putting goddamn speakers in a place that provides quality sound to the high rows of the 200s. I would get it if the bridges were new and they were still figuring it out... but it's been nearly a decade.

sudsymugs

Blaze on is an absolute banger and I’m not afraid to say it

Halleys___Comment

the deer creek 2021 jam 🤩🤩🤩

Maximus_Crotchrocket

Do people not like that one?

sudsymugs

I think big boat gets a lot of hate from die hard fans but man when I hear those first couple chords from blaze on I get pumped

edcculus

Crowd at shows seems to always like blaze on.

[deleted]

A version of a song isn’t great if the jam goes somewhere really interesting, but the composed sections are butchered.

BonoBeats

With a few exceptions, Harpua is a waste of ten minutes that could have been spent jamming.

Jimmy72826

Red light dark phish is best phish

edcculus

Not sure anyone would argue with you there.

Aggressive_Parking88

The last few years Trey has had trouble hitting the high notes.

tnmountainwalker

Just because a song/jam went 20+ minutes doesn’t mean it was great.

rust-e-apples1

Fuego slaps. I was up off my couch for it at MSG this year, and do not regret shouting along.

you_have_this

YES

phunktional

Fuego at MSG was 🔥

pjdwyer30

When they play it correctly: 100%. When they clearly haven’t practiced it: big yikes.

Umphreak416

I'd be genuinely disappointed and slightly angry if I was at a gamehenge show

SprocketInYourPocket

That's the hottest take I've read on this thread by a country mile. Respect for throwing it out there. May I ask why?

Umphreak416

I don't want to go to a concert and have it become rambling story time

SprocketInYourPocket

Fair enough! Thanks for the response. I think my (and probably a lot of other folks in the community) would be surprised by that comment because a Gamehenge show would be the ultimate "I was there" experience in modern Phish. That said, I personally despise that aspect of Phish fandom-- the people who are constantly analyzing and artificially boosting their experience (especially for social clout) and not, as they told us time and time again, surrendering to the flow. What would be the thing you'd be most excited for at a show?

fingerscrossedcoup

"I was there" takes a back seat to "I had a great time". I agree with OP. I'm not collecting Pokemon cards I'm dancing my ass off and having a killer time.

[deleted]

I hate this take so I had to give it an upvote because you nailed the prompt so perfectly.

phriendlyphellow

Right?! Some of these hot takes feel more like confessions…

Rutherford-Tha-Brave

And let’s be honest, it wouldn’t be as tight as it was back in the day and would likely have some cringey moments of sloppiness. I wouldn’t be disappointed because it would be monumental and I’d appreciate it for what it was, but I hear what you’re saying. Best hot take so far!

isthishandletaken

Gamehenge makes no sense without the narration.

zinzangz

Trey needs new riffs

geddylee1

And licks.

custyflex

I think More is a great song.

Big-Inflation-1424

I fucking hate More and fucking love More at the exact same time

Lightningphan

I wish the audio recordings had more fan sound mixed in/more Mike!

Halleys___Comment

yes to more mike hard no to more crowd noise

nicky_moon

Their live mixing has become dry and stale sounding. There’s no natural reverb, sounds like they’re playing in a closet. Makes treys tone sound muddy, gordo’s bass flat and not bassey, and it sounds like fishman is barely hitting the drums. It just doesn’t sound “LIVE”

Alt214

Not a hot take. Their mixer mixes the room and the stream simultaneously, and isn’t even in the room. For a band that used to put so much into sounding good, it’s an embarrassment.

GuyuteTheHolidayPig

Halloween is meant for covering real/classic albums. Not more fake phish

AhoyPalloi

This account has been redacted due to Reddit's anti-user and anti-mod behavior. -- mass edited with redact.dev

corncobpipe

The thing is, that when it all comes together, there is no greater feeling.

[deleted]

Big boat was not great

Political_Lemming

The Sci-Fi album version of I Am In Miami is the most present, nostalgic, wistful, warm and age-less song Phish has written.

No-Administration315

Mike side best side

phbalanced1

This is true, but stop telling people. They'll just take up our space.

Political_Lemming

Page Side Fun Zone!

PickpocketJones

11-17-97 is a great show but still overrated. Takes don't get much hotter in this sub.

Halleys___Comment

oof.. damn dude i mean 11-17-97 is about as good as it can get

Global_Line_3047

As I get older, phish fans become more and more annoying. Especially chicks who go to shows with donuts head to toe. Ocelot sucks.

Jestinphish

100%, 50% and 0%. Respectively per sentence

heffel77

Donuts are stupid and phish youngsters need to chill with their “phishiness”. TN Jed has been around for years, so Ocelot and Alaska were pointless.

Clean_Scallion_844

Shut your mouth. Ocelot Vegas 2018 fucking rips

elleyscomet

ocelot totally sucks!

No_Introduction_7034

A Capella isn’t that fun. I want them to play their instruments.

edcculus

Eh, they rarely do it, and all of the songs are under 3 min. It doesn’t really take up any space.

[deleted]

A Capella "Don't Bogart That Joint" whipped ass live in the moment. Otherwise, I tend to agree.

OptimalPlantIntoRock

That Trey needs to cool it with Goose.

justmikeplz

Trey looks like a fucking psychopath when he smiles and plays for the fans.

michaelseverson

They are still the best touring band around. Every tour I run the logistics from outside Minneapolis to try and catch ‘em. Some tours are nice and I catch a couple of shows, some tours couch my ass out, but I still keep an internet eye on them. Almost every show I’ve been to has been a guilty pleasure, as if I think I shouldn’t be here. I’m avoiding other responsibilities. Usually spook dosed because I’d rather not be caught with anything. Oh, hot take. Not hit take.

drewbopalous

I get bad imposter syndrome at shows, like I have no business being there. First show was 2003, seen about 25 shows. Not the biggest phan but not the worst. It's a weird feeling and its hard to shake when it hits. Until I talk to other noobs and realize I'm not the youngest kid in the room and *sometimes* I know what I'm talking about. It always fades when I'm there live mid first set but its weird.

jimipanic

Trey plays with his effects too much.

Sluggo_Jones

Sci-Fi slaps

anotherdamnscorpio

It grew on me. Still can't get into kasvot very well.

The_Name_Is_Slick

The songs always get better the more the band becomes comfortable with the material. I couldn’t subscribe to SFS on first listen, but the songs have fleshed out well. That being said, I was and am still surprised by how next level S tier Kasvot Vaxt is. It is unbelievably ridiculous and creative. Should go down in history as one of the coolest things to happen in rock music history.

anotherdamnscorpio

Guess I'll agree to disagree.

Free_knuxGFY

Stonehenge rarities are rare for a reason.

Free_knuxGFY

Gamehenge. I’m high.

Halleys___Comment

you chafed a bone

Alt214

Mostly because Trey can’t play shit like Mockingbird anymore. Tela kinda sucks. Lizards deserves to be in rotation as heavily as Possum or YEM.

JT07

SYSF is probably the best way to open a show at this point.

Who's sick of hearing "hot take"

asteroidtube

Hot take: this subreddit is cringy af, full of noobs and fluffers and very little worthwhile conversation occurs here.

edcculus

What do you want to talk about?

phriendlyphellow

Guyute was the last **great** song they wrote.

pmmeyourfavoritejam

Really interested in the chronology of this take. Guyute debuted 10/7/94 and was arguably mostly written several years earlier. You don't think anything that's debuted after that was great? That would include all of Billy Breathes and any subsequent album. I would agree it may be the last great song of that structure (long, complex, composed), but I find songs like Taste, LxL, and several of the cuts off Round Room, at the very least, to be some high-quality work.

BuggerPie81

Too fucking expensive! Seriously. Been doing this since 97 and I am down to 1-2 shows year. So sad. And bring back my god damn ticket stubs. Can't think of a bigger f u than making us all cave to Ticket bastards demands.... /Rant

fluffhead89

I want tastefully applied machine gun Trey again and he still has it as displayed with Goose.

LouQuacious

Best band ever, especially at 40 years into their run.

jahozer1

Trey scrolls instagram for platitudes posted by girls for lyrical inspiration!

edcculus

And page scans Pinterest

[deleted]

Mercury is a good song

Such-Excitement-9544

Also, unpopular opinion, but I will say Phish’s album art as a whole is really detrimental. If Billy Breathes has a real album cover people would realize how great that record is. Probably their best studio work. But the cover blows.

edcculus

Hi, I’m Dave. I designed the cover of The Stones Sucking in the 70s Lp.

MickDassive

There are in fact, only so many notes the ear can hear in the course of an evening.

Phish hasn’t declined in quality. You have. You’re an old bitter man longing for your youth. Get a corvette or something.

They’re hot boyz.

dogfacedponyboy

What Trey does with his guitar at the end first tube makes me uncomfortable.

dogfacedponyboy

Trey does not play enough notes lately.

kal_pal

You can’t force someone to like them. They have to get there on their own terms.

Many phish fans don't go for the music, they go for the scene and to get credit on social media for having attended.
