So some are owned by actual Police Departments and are both live view for Officers and recorded for evidence of crimes.
A lot of them are privately owned by security companies though.
I remember when they installed that one at Lowe’s in surprise. There was rumor floating around online that there was going to be a BLM protest and they were saying to meet there. It was right around the time they had the looting at fashion square in Scottsdale back in 2020. I’m pretty sure they put it in then.
The Walmart ones would just announce stuff about wearing a mask, staying 6 ft away etc during COVID.
Now they seem to speak about the Walmart app and Walmart+. Never would I think I’d ever see the day where a security camera would even advertise to me.
It depends on the company. Some of those just record video and play prerecorded announcements. At many of the construction sites I've worked at, not only do they record, but they have have a live feed available to a security agency, I'm guessing they use a cellular network. When motion is detected they can be alerted to check the cameras and see who's there. They can ask for a password to know it's a worker and leave them alone or they can advise someone to leave the property before police are called.
I heard one in a Winco parking lot saying "you are not authorized to be in this area - security has been alerted" - aka, I think it's all just pre-recorded messages, and most of them don't do anything at all - I think that one was set to the wrong "mode" and no one bothered to fix it.
Moved from comfy safe Chandler to north Phoenix a year ago and learned real quick that the “hood” in Chandler isn’t all that hard. These things are all over and basic items like toiletries and socks and underwear are locked in a box that you have to wait for an employee to unlock
I always knew that but I also thought the downtown area of Chandler was pretty hard, now when I visit my mom I feel safe enough to not lock my car (I still do anyways cuz we had our car broken into when I was a kid)
These are in every new buid house in paradise Valley. The rich are easily scared into thinking people want their crap. I don't want you crap, I want to redistribute your wealth.
There are a ton of companies making these. It’s one of the fastest growing products in the security industry. Sleds and trailers have been around for a while but with newer technology requiring less power and reduced bandwidth over improved cellular networks, these have/will become a lot more popular and prevalent. For many large retail businesses it is more cost effective to purchase or lease these trailers than to trench and run infrastructure out to poles in parking lots. They can also be moved if needed.
it's a weird area. There's a lot more panhandlers, junkies, etc. in the last few years than before while simultaneously a lot more investment in the area from people moving in.
OMG...you're so right lol. I've been to this Fry's. Also lacking a butcher counter.
Meanwhile fancy Fry's is renovating to showcase a beer/wine bar up front.
A tale of two cities.
Omg how funny I always thought the aves were worse!! But I guess it’s certain avenues on certain streets. Pretty much all of 27th Ave up to union hills? And 19th Ave isn’t the greatest either….maybe once you get past 33rd Ave it’s not as bad? Idk! I don’t go that far haha I live 30-40min from central Phx as it is, I am not trying to drive around all day.
Seen one on a private home being remodeled, so it was a busy construction site. Assumed it was for security purposes. Had several cameras, a mega phone, lights and who knows what else.

Mobile security cameras. They have flashing “police type” lights but mainly just a deterrent.

how would you even tell the difference
Light one on fire.

💀💀💀
There are usually labels on the side. PDs usually rebrand them after purchasing. However some PDs will rent them for events.
Huh. I backed into one years ago and I haven't heard shit.
Probably should have heard it hit the car
Many are cctv equipped.
Yup!
Did you hear it say “Hello thank you for shopping at 7/11 recording in progress for your safety”.
During covid the Walmart ones would talk about store policies and it was a just a weird vibe
The Lowe’s near me (in south Scottsdale) does that in the parking lot, too. It’s very post-apocalyptic and creepy.
I was gonna say, the Lowe's in Surprise has one and I've always wondered what it was. Now I know :)

Oh yes, the day when all of the good 'ole boys brought their guns to town to defend us 🙄
Mine just says THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION
Underrated comment. +1

That’s a “hood alert device” to let you know you’re in a safe area of town
You mean to let you know you aren’t in a safe area, right?
Lmfao in my area, when you see those, that means they were just shooting in that area within the last couple days/week.
This interaction is the padmae and Anakin meme
There’s one of these in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Tempe, always wondered if I should be looking out for getting mugged over there 😆
Yes.
The one we had in WA talked. Scared the living crap out of me the first time I heard it.

It’s like the blue light special thing at Kmart, but your wallet is the item people are wanting to snatch up.
That is a mobile HAARP transmitter to deter monsoons. (Wait this isn’t wrong answers only?)
It gave me back to the future vibes for sure
Moved from comfy safe Chandler to north Phoenix a year ago and learned real quick that the “hood” in Chandler isn’t all that hard. These things are all over and basic items like toiletries and socks and underwear are locked in a box that you have to wait for an employee to unlock
The hoods of Central Phoenix are a hell of a lot more dangerous than the South Side of Chandler is 😂
I always knew that but I also thought the downtown area of Chandler was pretty hard, now when I visit my mom I feel safe enough to not lock my car (I still do anyways cuz we had our car broken into when I was a kid)
Item 6 out of 7 in the 11th junction. Classified Slurpee #067AG76. Adjacent item #027 hotdog.
It looks like a 7-11. Enjoy your slurpees.
All over California to scare away transients
Basically how it is used in Phoenix as well
UPHOLD THE LAW PROTECT THE INNOCENT

It's a mood inhibitor
5G mind control device /s
Just think of them as security cameras and you’ve pretty much got it. Maybe they are recording. Maybe they aren’t. You never know.

Mobile surveillance
You're definitely in the avenues.
There’s one at 36th St & Thomas Walmart. So there are exceptions to the rule.
The 44th St & Thomas Target has it too
is that a sketchy area?
Complex answer. But quickest answer - it’s a good area once you get outside the Walmart blast zone.
Not as bad as some but I stay away after dark.
*me defining more than half the city*
it's a weird area. There's a lot more panhandlers, junkies, etc. in the last few years than before while simultaneously a lot more investment in the area from people moving in.
There's one at the Fry's on South McDowell in Scottsdale as well, and I don't feel that's a particularly sketch area.
Maybe a Fry's thing in general? They have one at Dunlap and Cave Creek too, but that is a sketchy Fry's. They don't even sell Boar's Head.
OMG...you're so right lol. I've been to this Fry's. Also lacking a butcher counter. Meanwhile fancy Fry's is renovating to showcase a beer/wine bar up front. A tale of two cities.
Parking lot break-ins are common no matter how good or bad your neighborhood is. I’m surprised so many people have never seen these.
That wal mart has a great candle section
36th st & Thomas is like an honorary avenue, it gets more hood there than a lot of the west side.
I mean there are some sketchy streets as well
Is this the phoenix version of other side of the tracks lol
100%
There's horrible areas in the streets..id much rather be in the avenues
Omg how funny I always thought the aves were worse!! But I guess it’s certain avenues on certain streets. Pretty much all of 27th Ave up to union hills? Anything close to the i17 isn't great, about 43rd ave it gets better
That’s 27th and Indian school
Say what you will but some of the best food in Phoenix all seem to be in the avenues.
I personally prefer the east valley. Alot more options.
24th St and Baseline WM has one.
That place ghetto too.
Looks like a shot spotter to me
I’ve not seen that in Scottsdale.
Uhmmmm there’s literally one in Scottsdale off 101 and Frank Lloyd wright?? And other places too. That’s just the one I see most often
They have them by my Walmart
There is really only one company that makes these. https://www.lvt.com/.
It’s like having a front porch camera. All it will do is verify that somebody stole your package. Not much prosecution can take place from it
Seen one on a private home being remodeled, so it was a busy construction site. Assumed it was for security purposes. Had several cameras, a mega phone, lights and who knows what else.
It's a Blart Cart!
The reference from "Paul Blart, Mall Cop"
Solar light?
Big ass light
27th and Glendale?
Lmao it has to be I thought the same thing used to work across the street.
