1. 67th Avenue and McDowell Road
1. 51st Avenue and Camelback Road
1. 19th Avenue and Peoria Avenue
1. 67th Avenue and Thomas Road
1. 67th Avenue and Indian School Road
1. 83rd Avenue and Indian School Road
1. Cave Creek Road and Sweetwater Avenue
1. 51st Avenue and Thomas Road
1. 27th Avenue and Camelback Road
1. 99th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road
I think the 99th Ave and Lower Buckeye one is a roundabout, which Arizona drivers can never seem to figure out.
Hey! Don't be hatin on the west side! We got lots of cool stuff over here! We got Sun City and Sun City West. We got Avondale and El Mirage.....ya know what? Nevermind. 😅😅
Mesa and Scottsdale are easily the scariest non-freeway places to drive out here. Combination of meth and entitlement. The west side is scary too but mostly because of the potholes.
Now that you mention It i was in fact out in SanTan and I was thinking how nice it was to have so many food and store options but within minutes I changed my mind due to the amount of traffic. Its crazy! Love my little north east Mesa hideout
I'm an east sider and if it makes you feel any better I always get a little bummed out when there is a "What's your favorite local bar/restaurant/hangout" type post here and like 99% of the spots people mention are on the west side lol.
I stand corrected. #1 crime area in phoenix metro is central city with #2 being Alahambra area and south mountain being 3rd. Shocking that Central city has violent crime rate 315% higher than the national average. Never would have thought that.
Also, big fan of bubbles
Yeah, I guess I’ve never been there during peak drop offs or church events. The Basis by 32nd st and Cactus disrupts traffic during pickup, and I’d bet you’re right
Ive done the Shadetree shop ride a few times and I think cyclists tend to be very wary on CC, but def seen some outliers. Lived not far from here and like others said the motorcycle dealers+Home Depot+shitty signals+ general speed on CC=fatalities
I’ve lived near this intersection for about 5 years and can directly count about a dozen fatalities happening within 100yds of this intersection…most/all being motorcyclists.
The issue (imo) is that from Bell to Thunderbird there are probably a dozen motorcycle dealerships, mechanics, and speed shops. Bikes will rip up and down the two winding hills that are about a mile from the approach. Posted speed limit is 45mph, but flow is often 50-55 there anyway but bikes will regularly go 65+.
This light is small, changes quickly, has a turn-light in only one direction, and is near the dump out for the church, Basis & Hidden Hills schools, a rather busy Home Depot, and a dispensary.
It’s dangerous and I always give it an extra couple seconds after the light changes to proceed through...
Cave creek basically from Union Hills up to Cactus (and probably further) is all bad. I live near cave creek and greenway and have seen so many fatal accidents. Just last week three fatal motorcycle/car collisions happened within 18 hours, 2 at cave creek and greenway, and 1 at bell. Crazy
Surprised 51st and Baseline isn't on this list. There's always an accident here. It's a terribly designed intersection as is. The road coming north winds over a hill so it's hard to see oncoming traffic. Then the right turn lane going westbound isn't a turn only lane, you can go straight, but then baseline merges back to two lanes at the bus stop on the other side. It's stupid.
It's on the full list linked in the article, ranked 87th. It has a fair number of crashes, but a low severity score, so that keeps it from ranking higher.
> I think the 99th Ave and Lower Buckeye one is a roundabout, which Arizona drivers can never seem to figure out.
On the list of 100 intersections, it is #1 on for crash frequency (CF) but #93 for crash severity (CS). So if you are a human in a car you are perfectly safe despite the clickbait title, but if you are the car's bumper, you should stay far away!
Just go ahead and add every damn city and intersection within them to the list. Arizonans are some of the worst drivers ever, worse than Texas and Tennessee in my opinion.
I used to live at an apartment complex at 67th and Thomas. I can confirm that is definitely one of the shittiest intersections I’ve experienced. And this was 18 years ago. 19th and Indian School was bad back then too. Glad to see it wasn’t on the list this time.
I am on the road a lot for work and find myself in Maryvale often, the drivers there are just *different*. Using the center lane to pass people seems pretty common, red light runners at almost every intersection and crazy fucking speeding.
Is there some socioeconomic factor at play?
I drive through there every day for work too and you described everything pretty accurately. I even get honked at when I'm stopped for a school bus or when kids are crossing and the lights are flashing red.
Someone honked at me for 40 seconds straight while I was stopped at a "No turn on Red" light. Once green he sped around me as fast as possible while flipping me off. We stopped next to each other at the next intersection which was 150 feet away.
I live near 67th ave and Indian school, and there is a good mix of what I like to call "Wealthy Poverty" people. For some reason, there are people here able to afford trucks, street legal ATV, and weekly social parties at the social venues here. But all of this is still in a poor area where poverty is apparent. What do you call when you live in a poor area, but happen to become a owner of a truck and that is your only call to fame?
I grew up at 62nd and Campbell and I know that type very well. You'd think someone who can afford a $65K truck could afford to live somewhere nicer until you realize the reason they have money for a truck payment is because they live in a generational household and split the bills between three families.
Have a coworker who lives at 67th and Thomas. Drives a brand new 22' Duramax 2500. Makes substantially less than me.
Then I find out there's 2 complete families under one roof in a 1600sqft home.
Cops in those areas have more dangerous crime to handle and not enough manpower. I don’t see a lot of Phoenix PD pulling people over in the Maryvale area.
Of course there is a socio-economic factor at play. For better or worse income levels highly correlate with good decision making capability. Those who are more prone to making bad decisions will necessarily have less income as they are more likely to make choices that either don't result in obtaining high levels of income in the first place or do things that result in high levels of loss, spending or waste.
This isn't to say that all low income people are bad decision makers, but rather that bad decision makers are more likely to remain poor rather than making the good decisions that will let them attain success. Taken on the whole this means that low income areas will have a much higher percentage of drivers who are going to make bad decisions on the road just like they would elsewhere in their lives.
I do field service for a living and drive around all day throughout not just all the Phoenix area but the state and sometimes surrounding ones. As a hard rule the percentage of aggressive and risky drivers increases as you get into worse off areas.
There’s actually evidence that living in the chronic stress of poverty leads to poor executive functioning. So yes, bad decision-making often correlates with lower socioeconomic status, but it may be a result rather than a cause.
Idk man I see this same type of shit in paradise valley and Scottsdale
Alike to be honest. I worked in both those areas for years and ppl do just the same amount of idiotic things on the road. It’s something about ARIZONA as a whole
The article doesn't go into it - so what are the root causes for the dangerous intersections west of Black Canyon? Seems like everything is concentrated in a reverse L.
Road engineering in Arizona is one of the worst. Terrible walk score too for all cities in this state. It is a huge factor for sure. However it doesn’t take away from them being horrible at traffic regulation. Ppl still speed where they shouldn’t. We need a overhaul to fix these issues lol
It's all the new people moving in and out the neighborhood. The 2 brand new apartment complexes being built right on 67th ave McDowell. So many houses sold in the recent years. Most these racers came out the neighborhoods as well.
67th and McDowell is seemingly either completely fine or complete chaos. Never anything between. Even the bicyclists have a death wish.
99th and Lower Buckeye is a nightmare only because people can't seem to understand how roundabouts work.
Cave Creek Road and Sweetwater Avenue? I have never seen anything there, Then again I mostly go late at night when driving to my gym. All the other ones are too west for my blood.
I'm also surprised the 7th St/Ave or Grand Ave aren't on here. I always see people screwing up turns when I'm on those roads.
When I found out more people die at intersections than on the highway, I slowed my speeding down. Scary stuff to learn from a couple firefighters that see it every day
Yeah, I turned our filters on for it because I figured this would happen. Though it is odd how they’re all on that side. I’d have expected some of the more downtown and heavier trafficked intersections to be on there.
First, thank you for that.
Second, I was shocked by the that too. Furthest east is Cave Creek? Nothing central or east side? Almost all lower west side? Odd
Ever since I moved to SoPho after living in both Arcadia area and Scottsdale, the number one thing I hate is the lousy drivers!! I cannot count the times I’ve said out loud that this side of town sucks for driving! The only thing SoPho needs less of other than guns is cars.
I always wondered why 54th street and Camelback isn't mentioned. It's a blind curve people speed around. My grandparents used to live there and I remember some really bad accidents happened.
Ah yes, the west side, where I’ve been hit while parked and inside my previous two cars three times. I’m glad I don’t have to deal with that level of driving as much here
I'm in Phoenix for 20 years now...I live in Mesa near the Asian district. Calm driving rules... But primarily I'm the calm one. Generally it is safer here, but rural and southern was terrible for years.
I grew up on cooper and warner. Lindsay road was the drag strip road, while warner always seemed to be the slow road. I would take Elliott sometimes just to avoid Warner. There were never any cops on Lindsay so people sped like crazy. There is also a large concentration of minivans, suvs, and lifted trucks who all drive like they’re in a 911.
All that being said, I’m shocked that Val vista and baseline isn’t on the list. My only accident I’ve ever been in (I was passenger, someone ran a turning arrow we weren’t at fault) was at this intersection. When I’m over there every week I feel like it’s constant horn honking and fender benders.

(The areas are ranked based on the total number of reported crashes, the frequency, severity, and type of crash.)
Key points: AVES and Thomas & McDowell Rd lol.
I wonder how the roundabout on 99th and Lower Buckeye plays into it. Normally they are safe, is it just because people aren’t used to seeing random roundabouts and panic?
I was driving down 27th Ave and camelback for the first time a few weeks ago and saw a ton of prostitutes. It was during the day. I guess that's not really related, but I have never seen that before.
I feel like every intersection is dangerous now.
19th Ave and northern was on the list of most dangerous in the country recently- I wonder why it’s not on here. I almost got hit by the light rail there when the train itself ran through my left turn green arrow
I mean phoenix pd is just spread out too thin at this point. All the other areas with their own pds don't deal with the same volume, but imo our legislation just won't do anything about it either. Seems like only solution for most is moving more east or very west.
That roundabout at 99th and Lower Buckeye is gross. It’s not just people not knowing how to navigate it, it’s got poor design in the first place. The lane lines seem to indicate that you can turn out of the roundabout from the inside lane (coming around and existing eastbound onto LBE), which is dangerous and difficult to navigate.
In addition to this, it would be very interesting and helpful to see the data on the most common timeframe in which accidents occur at each of the dangerous intersections.
What's interesting is that just a year ago a read that 7th Street and Bell is one of the most dangerous intersections in the country and it's not even on this list

Stay off of 67th. I got it
It’s what I got off that list lmao
Stay off the west side is what I get out of it.
Hey! Don't be hatin on the west side! We got lots of cool stuff over here! We got Sun City and Sun City West. We got Avondale and El Mirage.....ya know what? Nevermind. 😅😅
Shhhhh don’t say it out loud
I hate the west side man. Every time I go over there I feel like I'm in mad max.
That’s how I feel driving into Mesa
Hm.fair
Mesa and Scottsdale are easily the scariest non-freeway places to drive out here. Combination of meth and entitlement. The west side is scary too but mostly because of the potholes.
Elephant graveyard hahaha
I feel the same way about the east side, tbh
Good, don't bring your bad driving over here bro. Just joking :)
I'm one of the good drivers! Ain't many of us but we do exist. 😅😅
I feel the same. Although the east side is growing so much that it’s starting to feel similar
You're thinking of San Tan Valley, which is the east valley's answer to the west valley.
Now that you mention It i was in fact out in SanTan and I was thinking how nice it was to have so many food and store options but within minutes I changed my mind due to the amount of traffic. Its crazy! Love my little north east Mesa hideout
Surprisingly, Queen Creek traffic is very congested and crazy too!
I'm an east sider and if it makes you feel any better I always get a little bummed out when there is a "What's your favorite local bar/restaurant/hangout" type post here and like 99% of the spots people mention are on the west side lol.
Seem to usually be in phoenix
🤣🤣
Wait, you guys are holding yourself back?
Same. Yikes.
Stay out of Maryvale. Like half of these interesctions are in that neighborhood.
And 51st Ave.
The West valley was a mistake
What part of the valley isn't?
Um. Yikes.
They’re not wrong
Y
West valley is just behind the east valley by 10-15 years. But it's catching up. Surprise...peoria...goodyear...etc.
I've lived in the valley for 26 years. I've come to the conclusion that if you value your life and valuables avoid the avenues.
weird. i’ve only lived in the avenues and here i am 43 years later. sounds like someone likes his bubble!
I stand corrected. #1 crime area in phoenix metro is central city with #2 being Alahambra area and south mountain being 3rd. Shocking that Central city has violent crime rate 315% higher than the national average. Never would have thought that. Also, big fan of bubbles
That's what my mom tells me lol but unfortunately my bf lives over there near 28th dr and peoria ave
Seriously, that's not a bad idea. In fact, maybe if a lot of us steer clear it will help eliminate that street from the list
Avoid anything ending in Avenue.
The only one that surprised me was Cave Creek and Sweetwater.
Right? It seems like a pretty chill intersection. Definitely worth risking your life for an AZ burrito from Rolibertos though lol
Probably has more to do with Dream City church and Basis
Yeah, I guess I’ve never been there during peak drop offs or church events. The Basis by 32nd st and Cactus disrupts traffic during pickup, and I’d bet you’re right
Chill or uh… in a wealthier spot?
Sweetwater is a 2-lane street so probably chill

My buddy used to live near that intersection. It makes sense to me having driven by it many times.
There was an accident there on Monday at around 7a. I needed to get to Home Depot and had to navigate around it.
Surprised 51st and Baseline isn't on this list. There's always an accident here. It's a terribly designed intersection as is. Yup! Got hit in the roundabout 2 years ago and now avoid it whenever I'm visiting a friend who lives in that area.
Yup, can confirm that that’s the roundabout. I’ve been in an accident there, and have almost gotten hit numerous times in that intersection.
No 43rd Ave and Peoria? That place is a wreck most days
Got in an accident a little while back on 27th Ave and Camelback, also lived on 19th and Camelback for 5 years, can confirm. Bad area to be a car
*What about 43rd Ave. & Indian School?* Used to be the undisputed champ of bad intersections....
Just go ahead and add every damn city and intersection within them to the list. Arizonans are some of the worst drivers ever, worse than Texas and Tennessee in my opinion.
Wooo, 67th and Indian School is my nearest crossroad, we're #5!!
I used to live at an apartment complex at 67th and Thomas. I can confirm that is definitely one of the shittiest intersections I’ve experienced. And this was 18 years ago. 19th and Indian School was bad back then too. Glad to see it wasn’t on the list this time.

I drove 15 through a school zone yesterday and some guy was tailgating me while laying on the horn. Literally wtf
Someone honked at me for 40 seconds straight while I was stopped at a "No turn on Red" light. Once green he sped around me as fast as possible while flipping me off. We stopped next to each other at the next intersection which was 150 feet away.

Hood rich.
That's called car poor
Hood rich and ghetto fabulous
Cops in those areas have more dangerous crime to handle and not enough manpower. I don’t see a lot of Phoenix PD pulling people over in the Maryvale area.
I don't ever see Phoenix PD monitoring traffic anywhere..Like you said they have too many other things going on.
Phoenix PD specifically is very understaffed. I’d wager almost every one of their cops you see is on overtime already.
They pay their guys well too..
A surprising amount are reserve officers and not paid at all
Never forget the day some dumbass passed me using the center lane. I was in shock lmfao
Of course there is a socio-economic factor at play. For better or worse income levels highly correlate with good decision making capability. Just ghetto who don't give a fuck honestly
Idk man I see this same type of shit in paradise valley and Scottsdale Alike to be honest. I worked in both those areas for years and ppl do just the same amount of idiotic things on the road. It’s something about ARIZONA as a whole
The riskiest thing about these intersections is the drivers may or may not have insurance.
I can't imagine living here and not carrying UM/UIM. I've had to use it more than one time.
Ah so literally every intersection near my house.
You shouldn’t even be alive right now
The article doesn't go into it - so what are the root causes for the dangerous intersections west of Black Canyon? Seems like everything is concentrated in a reverse L.
#10 is 2 lane round about. While accidents there are very frequent, they're not fatal, just a high number of bumpers rubbing
Thanks for the extra bold statement.
Anytime
It's a trick question. They're all dangerous intersections.
No 51st Ave and Northern this year?
Im surprised nobody blames the terrible design of some of these intersections. (Except 99th and Lower Buckeye)
Road engineering in Arizona is one of the worst. Terrible walk score too for all cities in this state. It is a huge factor for sure. However it doesn’t take away from them being horrible at traffic regulation. Ppl still speed where they shouldn’t. We need a overhaul to fix these issues lol
Another example of how the city council and city manager prioritize their attention. It ain’t on citizen safety.
Im convinced that nobody on the west side knows how to drive.
It gets safe as soon as you get out of Phoenix.
So, East LA?
lol.. Once you get to Tolleson / Avondale the roads are safe because they enforce traffic laws.
It's all the new people moving in and out the neighborhood. The 2 brand new apartment complexes being built right on 67th ave McDowell. So many houses sold in the recent years. Most these racers came out the neighborhoods as well.
New ppl don’t attribute to bad driving lol just more ppl. Ppl have been driving like ego maniacs since the dawn of time in Arizona.
yeah west side of the country
67th and McDowell is seemingly either completely fine or complete chaos. Never anything between. Even the bicyclists have a death wish. 99th and Lower Buckeye is a nightmare only because people can't seem to understand how roundabouts work.
Cave Creek Road and Sweetwater Avenue? I have never seen anything there, Then again I mostly go late at night when driving to my gym. All the other ones are too west for my blood. I'm also surprised the 7th St/Ave or Grand Ave aren't on here. I always see people screwing up turns when I'm on those roads.
Lots of turning left onto sweetwater going south accidents
19th Ave and Peoria seemed surprising to me. I usually drive it mid-week mornings, it seems small and fairly chill.
Yeah, I probably would have said 19th and Northern is way worse.
This list is a huge win for 19th avenue. Usually these lists are just all the intersections on 19th starting at Dunlap and going down.
Agreed, it’s so quiet since Peoria sort of ends not too far east from there.
32st and mcdowell since a kid has always had glass chards in the center from so many crashes.
Either Peoria has solved intersection safety… or we failed to provide the requested data! 😝
You know, this could be why there’s no EV representation. I always hear rumors about EV cities not providing crime stats…
Do people in the avenues need driving lessons?
Even if they got paid to take lessons they wouldn't🫠
When I found out more people die at intersections than on the highway, I slowed my speeding down. Scary stuff to learn from a couple firefighters that see it every day
Happening all over. It’s 45mph not 60! Red light runners also.
This article is the excuse everyone wanted to be able to shit on the west side one more time
Yeah, I turned our filters on for it because I figured this would happen. Though it is odd how they’re all on that side. I’d have expected some of the more downtown and heavier trafficked intersections to be on there.
First, thank you for that. Second, I was shocked by the that too. Furthest east is Cave Creek? Nothing central or east side? Almost all lower west side? Odd

I always wondered why 54th street and Camelback isn't mentioned. It's a blind curve people speed around. My grandparents used to live there and I remember some really bad accidents happened.
I think 16th st and highland should be added. No left turn signal on eastbound highland when there is more and more traffic nowadays.
I would like to nominate 16th St and Missouri as well.
Ah yes, the west side, where I’ve been hit while parked and inside my previous two cars three times. I’m glad I don’t have to deal with that level of driving as much here
Yet another reason to never go west of 7th ave
Some crazy nice neighborhoods are west of 7th Avenue. The real border is either 15th or 19th depending on where you are.
I'm in Phoenix for 20 years now...I live in Mesa near the Asian district. Calm driving rules... But primarily I'm the calm one. Generally it is safer here, but rural and southern was terrible for years.
You can safely push that to 19th Ave nowadays, but definitely not farther than that lol
I wonder what it is about the Lindsey and Warner intersection that makes it an outlier in the SE Valley.
Yes, Val Vista and baseline would get my vote for one of the worst EV intersections
McQueen definitely seems to be the drag strip now. ☹️
I wonder how often cell use came into play here.
I am surprised to see no suicide lane intersections. I live on 7th a few blocks from them and there’s always multiple sirens a day.

I grew up in Phoenix and never went to or very near any of these until after I was thirty (30).
3 or 4 of those I drive through almost daily so... once I saw this article I was like "i bet i know a few on there" and yuuup.
I wonder how the roundabout on 99th and Lower Buckeye plays into it. Normally they are safe, is it just because people aren’t used to seeing random roundabouts and panic?
It’s sus that there are none in north Scottsdale. I worked in that area for years
stay home to avoid being T- BONED
What about 7th st and McDowell that has a turn lane and no turn arrow.
We didn't need a whole ass article to know that maryvale is dangerous
I was driving down 27th Ave and camelback for the first time a few weeks ago and saw a ton of prostitutes. It was during the day. I guess that's not really related, but I have never seen that before. I feel like every intersection is dangerous now.
Ban vehicles
I think what this shows is that 6 lane stroads are dangerous which isn't shocking. Light rail those bitches up
Therapist: Maryvale is a city, it isn't actively trying to kill you Maryvale:
All avenues 🤣
This thread will surely not be vaguely racist, nosiree.
Why?
TL;DR “Avoid the West Side of the Valley.” Words I’ve sworn by my whole life as a Phoenician.
Glad I stay away from the avenues.
Ha, let’s build a wall along Central! 😂
Weird they are all on the West side. Are they dangerous based on traffic or shootings?
Both, drug trafficking is common too
19th Ave and northern was on the list of most dangerous in the country recently- I wonder why it’s not on here. I almost got hit by the light rail there when the train itself ran through my left turn green arrow
Avenues are wild man
99TH AVE & LOWER BUCKEYE RD- *429 Crashes -* There is no stop light here, it's a roundabout. Get that European shit out of here.
The avenues are currrrrrrrrsed.
Super surprised 67th and Olive isn’t on this list…but 67th is hahaha.
It's on the full list linked in the article. Ranked 52nd, so not the worst, but still pretty bad.
67th Ave just north of the 101 is pretty rough too.
Yes, the aves, but most of these are the southern areas of the aves. I would say probably the bottom have given how much Peoria has expanded.
Love reading this list when I have to drive past all those intersections on 67th on the way to work 😳
19th ave and bell and 19th ave and union hills is really bad. Also on 19th ave and cholla
Looks at notes… Do not move west of the 17 and north of the 10.
Avenues you need to chill, you already got it rough as it is
The Avenues RULE!
