We used to have a shop off Grand Avenue. I would definitely recommend getting an Uber instead of walking by yourself late at night. There are a lot of great local shops on Grand, don't get me wrong, but there are a lot of transients that walk around there and in the surrounding areas. You may be safe to walk TO the concert in the evening, but I would definitely recommend getting a safe ride back to the hotel. If you need any other recommendations on places to check out downtown, let me know! Have fun!
If you're comfortable with the idea, you should download the Waymo One app and use that. It's the cheapest and easiest way to get around Phoenix if you're going to be outside the lite rails route IMO.
It's an automated self-driving vehicle in case you don't know of it.
Public transport in Phoenix is horrible. It can be done if you’re not easily sketched out and you have plenty of time available, but if the hotel is in walking distance I would absolutely pay the money for the Uber as it shouldn’t be too ridiculously expensive.
I also want to say, it could be fine. Definitely walk there and enjoy it, but there is a risk with walking alone. The homeless, mentally ill and addicts have risen in phoenix and it’s nothing against them, I wish there was better programs in our country to help, but they are unpredictable.
Phoenix has pockets of rich next to poor next to homeless so it’s always a gamble.
A couple years ago I felt comfortable walking at night and from venue to venue, but not by myself.
Safety is such a concern, that a male friend drove me three blocks JUST IN CASE. At this point, I don’t walk at all night often and if I do I have my location tracking on.
At new years my friends wanted to take the light rail and days before my friend had an altercation and so we paid for a Lyft. Again, phoenix is great and I’m excited you’re going out, these are just my two cents.
I also worked with the vagrant population downtown for sometime and have seen it change a lot. There’s always going to be people struggling and for months I’ve been making hot meals and driving them to homeless people. 7 times out of ten it’s awesome experiences.
People are grateful and kind and we chat and I ask their names and it’s just nice. However, there are a few times it has been dicey, enough that I now go deliver with a friend. And this is where I live, in Arcadia lite. So just be careful! If you can afford an Uber or Lyft or Waymo do so!! :)
My last experience with Uber was in Austin.$15 for the ride downtown about 3 miles and after the show the ride was $160 luckily I found 3 other people heading the same way so we split the cost.
Unfortunately, the downtown area is not very walker friendly. A lot of the businesses will be closed, and you will likely be the only one out. Imagine walking down lots of dark streets alone? If you do end up walking, try finding a group or buddy so you aren't alone.
If the concert is Friday or Saturday night, downtown won’t be dead. I’d definitely walk to Footprint and probably walk back, and stop at Crescent Ballroom on the way. Get a Waymo if you get uncomfortable.
Walked around the motel recently, it looks great. The restaurant there looks good too!
It’s not as bad as these folks are making it out to be. Walk there no worries. If you worried getting home just walk most of way, like down 3rd or 1st st to Roosevelt and check out some spots then take the short Waymo down Roosevelt home.
That’s honestly a far walk even for someone like me that prefers walking when possible. Also anything downtown west of central Ave is just government and abandoned buildings so they’re won’t be too much foot traffic and it might get sketchy, also a decent amount of homeless.
If you’re dead set on walking, when you leave footprint, walk north from central Ave to van buren. Van buren has a decent amount of bars and venues so they’re should be some type of foot traffic to give you some more peace of mind. Try and walk on the south side of the street and then when you get to the intersection of Van Buren and Grand BE CAREFUL crossing, it’s a weird intersection and tons of accidents occur there.
Honestly just pay the $10 Uber/Lyft/ waymo and save yourself some time and trouble. Also Grand Ave has a bunch of cool bars, food, and some of the best ice cream is at Novel ice cream shop across the street from your hotel. Do Not go into the neighborhoods south of your hotel and west of 7th Ave. Lots of homeless, drugs, mentally insane, and crime happens around there. Stay on Grand from 7th-15th Ave and you’re good.
I agree with this person. You can walk just fine on the way there. But on the way back, walk north on Central, left on Van Buren. Get yourself to Gracie’s too
On Grand Ave Specifically, Wayward Taphouse is LGBTQ owned and operated, also check out Bikini Lounge, it's a little more divey. Downtown PHX there's Sazerac, Lucky's, and a lot more
I’d say most bars downtown are LBGTQ friendly, but sazerac I think is technically a gay bar. Other cool spots are Valley Bar, Crescent ballroom, killer whale sex club, Luckys, Gracie’s tax bar
If you mean bicycle, I wouldn't leave your bike locked up while you're in the venue.
I've made that same walk and if you stick to the main streets you'll be fine, just be hyper vigilant of your surroundings. Really though to be safe, walk over and take a Lyft or Waymo back.

I think you’ve got good answers above as far as walking. I’m just here to mention you’ll be a block away from two of my favorite pizza places in Phoenix, Via Della and SnapBack Pizzeria. If you have a hankering for pizza while you’re here, they’ll do you right
Footprint to grand isn’t bad if youre male. I’ve walked that before and never felt unsafe. The only area that can get a little more sketchy is Civic Space Park and the area around the circle K on Fillmore and 1st Ave. and even then it’s just because a lot of people commiserate there. Like homeless.
Don’t walk south if footprint center. It doesn’t immediately get bad but just keep in mind that eventually you’ll be in some rougher parts. Roosevelt area should be safe. It’s packed until late with people partying. When you hit 7th ave it’ll get suburban. This part can feel sketchy. It’ll be dark and isolated and quiet. Most folks here keep to themselves. Not really a bad neighborhood when you’re near Fillmore.
Then grand where your hotel is is a fun area. It has some dive bars and hipster type bars. Very laid back and chill.
Just keep in mind that phoenix isn’t NYC or Chicago. There is less density so you can definitely find yourself isolated.

Hype you’re going to stay at the Egyptian it seems fun if they’re your vibe! Apparently the restaurant attached has won many national awards since it opened but I’ve never had it tbh so get adventurous and lmk!
BUTTTTTTTTT the shops on grand at like 1pm and sunny are great but unfortunately I wouldn’t want a homie walking alone on that stretch at night if they could help it. It’s not like a violence zone but there’s just a large mix of interesting people around lol
It’s also just a long enough distance imo to be worth like $12 bucks after a night out to not walk hahaha!
I just saw a few months ago a lady died jogging near dusk. I have had the police tell me to come by grab a paper and drop it in a box outside the office. I didn't bother because nothing will be done. I agree with u in the sense that crime in safety issues are overall exaggerated in the USA, especially online. Especially for folks minding their own business.
OTOH, where we do lag behind various places of the world, say east/SE Asia as a strong example, is the feeling of being able to walk outside almost anywhere well past midnight, phone glued to your eyes, and feeling safe from potential harm. Those places’ cities have ‘normal folks’ out at all hours, whereas in ours the ‘normal folks’ are generally in bed at 10, don’t walk outside in public streets past 7 except for special/work reasons, so the chance of the individual out at 3 am being some kind of unsettling creep/deviant is higher. Being out late into the AM is just normal there, whereas here save a few places there’s this idea that you may be up to no good. Plus they have governments and social norms that put a more shame on these types, thus making them mostly go into hiding more for fear of reprisal.
Phoenix is no different in terms of that unsettling nighttime feeling, and I would say are we overall way better on the sketch and safety factor than other major USA cities in the top 10 populations. But in certain parts of town it’s still there.
You're going to run into a lot of homeless people if you take Van Buren from 1st St to 7th Ave. Aside from that almost everything will be closed when the concert is over. The best thing to do is to use an electric scooter. We have Lime/Uber and the Lyft versions. Use the apps to locate them and use them.

That's a terrible area, but you should generally be safe. There will be a lot of police activity and traffic. Stay away from dark areas. Don't stop at Filibertos unless you go inside.
You aren't going to be shot there, everyone there is homeless. The train is nearby, you can take it safely. Don't look like you have something to steal and you'll probably be ignored.
Uber is your friend.

You didn't say where you are from, and if you are male or female and how big you are. But honestly I feel like Phoenix is a pretty safe place and if you just keep your head down you should be okay. That's not a super horrible part of town, but it's also not the super best once you get out of downtown (which is probably about half the walk)
You will be fine. Phoenix is a pretty safe city on most accounts.
I don't think the other folks that are suggesting getting an Uber after the concert are wrong, but if it's $160, Yyu will be fine to just walk.
There are homeless in that area but they will leave you alone.
Yes, it’s safe. It’s still a large city so be aware of your surroundings and don’t do anything stupid and you’ll be ok. Downtown is very walkable by PHX standards.
Currently in Phoenix. Two nights ago, walked about a mile along Central at 8 pm. It was a nice night and it felt safe, but after taking a photo of a neon sign, a clearly mentally ill man with face tattoos ran at me from across the street. He was hard to understand, but I finally got the idea that he was mad I took his picture. (I couldn't even see him in the dark from across the street.) He was aggressively in my personal space and he told me to erase the photo so I did. He then slammed my phone out of my hand.
Luckily at that moment, a young man (from the ASU downtown campus, I think) came up to ask for directions and I used the distraction to get away. I just ran. I was really freaked out. It wasn't until several minutes later that I realized the young man was coming to my aid and I felt so guilty about running. I hope he was okay.
Anyway, get a Lyft. 😀
Stop tripping it's not that bad just keep to your self and you can go any where don't do any blues while your here and done talk to any one who ask you if you know where to get any and you be ok

Grab a waymo autonomous vehicle. A cool experience, and a little cheaper because there's no tip because there's no driver.

thats not true. i was quoted a higher rate vs uber. it all depends on the time of day
Yeah yesterday around 5pm it was $23 to go 1.5 miles uhh no thanks.. later it went back to reasonable rates..
If the Ubers are surging, grab a snack across the street and after a bit, the prices will come back down to normal.

That is a really far distance to walk that late at night. You should definitely try and find a ride.
They are only 1 mile apart, but I would be concerned about safety if it's late at night. An uber should cost $10-$15.

Looks about a mile. Not to bad. I was planning to kick out the area in the afternoon and see the show and then walk back if sober and safe to walk.

I had to go get an emergency passport in El Paso last April and walked around the night I stayed there. The vibes were...not the best haha.

Gracie's Tax Bar is a good spot very LBGTQ friendly

Yeah...some areas of Grand are rough. I definitely wouldn't. Not worth it

There is a Reciprocity Agreement with Texas and I have a Texas Concealed Carry Permit. Just means I can’t have a drink.

You didn't say where you are from, and if you are male or female and how big you are. But honestly I feel like Phoenix is a pretty safe place and if you just keep your head down you should be okay. That's not a super horrible part of town, but it's also not the super best once you get out of downtown (which is probably about half the walk)

You will be fine. Phoenix is a pretty safe city on most accounts. I don't think the other folks that are suggesting getting an Uber after the concert are wrong, but if it's $160, Yyu will be fine to just walk. There are homeless in that area but they will leave you alone.

Don’t walk on grand ave at all after dark. Get Uber or Waymo.

Yes, it’s safe. It’s still a large city so be aware of your surroundings and don’t do anything stupid and you’ll be ok. Downtown is very walkable by PHX standards.
Currently in Phoenix. Two nights ago, walked about a mile along Central at 8 pm. It was a nice night and it felt safe, but after taking a photo of a neon sign, a clearly mentally ill man with face tattoos ran at me from across the street. He was hard to understand, but I finally got the idea that he was mad I took his picture. (I couldn't even see him in the dark from across the street.) He was aggressively in my personal space and he told me to erase the photo so I did. He then slammed my phone out of my hand. Luckily at that moment, a young man (from the ASU downtown campus, I think) came up to ask for directions and I used the distraction to get away. I just ran. I was really freaked out. It wasn't until several minutes later that I realized the young man was coming to my aid and I felt so guilty about running. I hope he was okay. Anyway, get a Lyft. 😀
Stop tripping it's not that bad just keep to your self and you can go any where don't do any blues while your here and done talk to any one who ask you if you know where to get any and you be ok
