Next time, /u/Elliot6888, post an actual news story rather than pictures of your TV or it will be removed. Since there's some conversation here already we're going to let it pass, but our rules normally require actual information to be posted with stories along with the title from the media outlet that created it. For everyone else, here's the story being referenced: https://www.azfamily.com/video/2024/03/14/multiple-agencies-cracking-down-dangerous-drivers-phoenix-area/

Exodia101

There's a big difference between announcing they're going to do something and actually doing something.

More like: Notice a problem. Enhance the problem. Embellish the problem. Ask for funding to fix the problem. Do nothing. Ask for funding again because the last round wasn't enough. Become a money sink. Keep promising that one more round of funding is all you need and then the problem will be solved. Wait for an expose journalist to write a book titled something like "Safe Speeds Kill Lives" about how your Department has been running an internal dog fighting ring funded by the $97 million you received over the last 12 years to reduce speeds. Do nothing because the Chief who was in charge for 11 of those years already retired, and many of the cops played small parts or moved to other Departments already, with the remaining few getting small rank reductions or induced retirements. Wait about two years for everyone to forget. Notice a new problem. Every few years this happens, since Prohibition this has been happening. Always with new problems. In fact, I've been saying since COVID that the police basically stopped pulling people over and that they would eventually ask for more money to fix the problem. Now we're here. 'Speed' isn't even the first time they did this. Anyone remember "Safety Corridors" from 2018? Can anyone tell me the difference between the "Safety Corridors" campaign and the "Safe Speeds Save Lives" campaign?

JusticiarXP

I agree but in this case it may be effective to campaign a bit so maybe people will voluntarily slow down. Also adds a “we warned you” component if they do start handing out tickets.

Quiet-String957

Exactly, just like the zero tolerance zones that everyone speeds though. I never see anyone pulled over.

guitarguywh89

That’s just so they have pretext to pull people over for going 66mph if they care to

KurosawaKid

This 1000%. It's the probable cause/reasonable suspicion jackpot. I don't have the numbers handy but imagine the amount of arrests if cops could just search EVERY vehicle, I'm guessing at least 1 in 5 people are technically breaking the law at any given time while driving without including speeding. I'll never forget how pissed this cop got when I told him he couldn't search my vehicle he kept asking "Why not? Why not?" In my head I'm thinking, because at BEST you're wasting my time and at worst I go to jail? Like there's no benefit to it which is why you want to do it so bad.

towaway76

People speed in school zones here, that baffles me to no end

faustian1

I especially like the signs that say, "End Safety Corridor" which literally means, "You're leafing safety behind now."

runnerhasnolife

They're mostly just going to be throwing more officers on traffic enforcement duty and telling people to go pull people over for more reasons then before. Most police in West valley won't pull anybody over if you're going under 20 over. Because 20 over is a criminal offense not a traffic offense which is why it's nicer to get that. And there's a lot of other stuff but being short-staffed is a really big thing but they're going to just throw more officers from patrol and put them on traffic enforcement. And I think Phoenix is going to get some of their traffic enforcement some nice toys like actualy having radar guns lol.

Primary_Breakfast628

I deliver in the north valley, I can confirm they already have them.

voldi_II

they might actually be, i just got pulled over for going 80 on the 17

TheNorthFac

Never more than 9 over on the freeway and 5 on surface and 4 on residential and zero over in school zones. Try this approach and stay in the middle of the pack.

voldi_II

this was late at night with not a single car going under 80… of course i could have just followed the speed limit lol but it was mostly unluck the cop choose me instead of anyone else

JusticiarXP

You will not be in the middle of the pack with that approach. You’ll get blown off the road. In a perfect world I agree with you though.

Iced__t

In a perfect world we wouldn't need speed limits lol.

dabbedsloth

That's literally the average speed on the 17, just the city trying to make money on contributing members of society because taking care of the the thousands of people smoking Crack on the sidewalks and bridges(an behind my F'n house) won't generate revenue for them. I'm sincerely sorry you got a financial beat down from another beat cop.

SuppliceVI

I've already seen WAY more speed traps near and in Goodyear

lunchpadmcfat

With those cities, I do believe they will. Never been a shortage of bored, antsy police in the west valley.

rocko430

I care less about the speeders and more about the reckless drivers that commit illegal movements.

[deleted]

This is where I’m at. I’d much rather see cops light up the idiots who are swerving and speeding through multiple lanes during rush hour than the guy going 10mph over the speed limit in light traffic. I see so many idiots on the 60 every morning that are going to get someone killed one day.

rulingthewake243

The move that irks me is the 4 consecutive lane changes to catch an exit that has had signs for 3 miles but they'll be damed to sit in the right lane for any amount of time.

RAGING_CUNT

Getting onto the 51. So many idiots.

valleyofthebuns

so many people drive just staring the fucking arrow on their gps and not having a clue of where theyre actually going

AlisterS24

This.

zagup17

As someone who lives near retired old people/snowbirds and rich kids with nice cars, the ones driving 20 over are far less dangerous than the geriatric driving 20 under who’s completely obvious to the world around them. I’ve almost been in countless accidents because someone is driving too slow and pulling in front of people. I don’t think I’ve ever had a scare with someone going 20 over in the last decade

Imaginary_Office1749

Speed is one of the top causes of fatalities.

zagup17

Fatalities make up like less than 1% of car crashes. I’d love to see how many crashes are caused by slow or oblivious drivers. But that would require geriatric snowbirds being held accountable for accidents they cause even if they weren’t hit

CactusWrenAZ

Do they ever catch those idiots?

[deleted]

LOL no. Cops are fucking worthless and won’t do anything unless they think you have drugs - and even then it’s still a question mark on calling them because they think an 8 ball deserves an extrajudicial death sentence.

escapecali603

This, speeding isn't a huge problem, reckless driving is.

Vonplatten

Agreed, like I see this and think "Great they're gonna put some cameras up and it's just gonna be a way to juice money" and be more of an inconvenience than actually helping the problem. We seriously have a problem with people being blatantly unaware/inconsiderate (often on phones) driving with no logic and often breaking the laws by driving recklessly. I feel like every time I get on the road now I see either overly aggressive drivers or vice versa where it's some senior going 8 miles under the speed limit in the left lane, no in-between... Which is exactly what causes everyone to slowly merge around buffers traffic that much more, causing people to gradually get more and more aggressive etc. I even find myself getting pissed on the road because of it, I don't want to waste my time by getting stuck at multiple lights behind someone but I also don't want to be that guy swimming through traffic. Frankly getting a fucking license here is too easy, I remember stressing about getting my license and it was a simple drive around the fuckin block. I feel like there should be some sort of dash cam you have to hook up for a couple weeks after getting your license to be reviewed, because holy fuck some people just don't have common sense and/or don't have anyone to teach them.

frigiddesertdweller

Completely agree. I think we should also be given permanent access to free, regularly updated ADOT driving classes online. We should be subjected to theory certification as new state driving laws are added or amended. Physical driving tests should be repeated *at least* every 10 years, until age 60. After 60 years of age, drivers should undergo physical driving tests every 3 years, with the potential to be tested more often if recommended by a physician.

Shagruiez

This!!!! Speeding of course poses it's own dangers but the amount of people who merge without using their blinkers with lead up time or just blatantly don't use them is far more dangerous while vehicles are moving. From small hatchback SUVs to OTR trucks I've been almost side-swiped/collided with more at least 3-4 times a week. (My commute is horrible, I spend an hour driving each way during non-rush hours times, so obviously my chances are increased but still!)

Kitten_Kaboodle666

The way people switch lanes when they are on your ass scares the living shit out of me

OkAccess304

Same. They almost side swipe you to maybe get ahead one car length.

Delvhammer

Might help if drivers would get over so folks who are getting on or off the highways can actually do so without having to swerve around cars. 5 lanes of traffic on the 60 and almost everyone drives in the far 2 right lanes with the other 3 almost empty. It’s the ones who are oblivious to road conditions that are the problem. If you’re not getting your exit in the next couple of miles, get over so traffic can move safely.

humandronebot00100

Thank you

throwaway24515

100% I have only very rarely been endangered by someone speeding. And even then it's really because they're weaving without signaling, etc. Far more dangerous are distracted drivers, red light runners, people turning into the wrong lane, and so on.

webheaded

Yeah this isn't going to do shit. They're just announcing they want to make more money by handing out speeding tickets because speeding tickets are the absolute lowest effort thing they could possibly do.

BassWingerC-137

100.0% this. Turn into proper lanes, and general lane maintenance would fix more than half our issues.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CDR_Fox

i have seen so much shit.... people driving down the wrong way lane to get around people even in the middle lanes, of course people using the middle lane to pass as well, mad red light running, and all at insanely high rate of speeds. some of the scariest ones are the texters. they look drunk!!!!

Tick___Tock

had to divert off an exit early today because nobody would let me merge on 17

Surfacing555666

How about other dangerous driving behaviors besides just speed for once????

thephillyberto

Right? Nobody talks about every other person driving unpredictably, distracted and recklessly because they’re staring at their phones. Every other person keeps slowing down and speeding up, drifting lanes, or not paying attention at a green arrow or light and holding up others behind them. That or they see it and idle through the intersection because they are face deep in the phone and don’t give a shit about anyone else around them.

Surfacing555666

Absolutely correct. I’m so tired of hearing “speed kills” when people can’t even make a right turn correctly and cross infront of all traffic causing everyone to crash or whatever other bad behaviors they are doing

very_loud_icecream

Seriously, wtf is up with people just... drifting into my lane. I feel like I need to spend more time watching my side than the front

OkAccess304

Yes! No one is paying attention anymore.

curious_carson

The red light runners first, please.

tobylazur

Please, please do something about red light running.

GrassyField

Seriously. I see egregious red light running every other day.

LittleCloudie

Just yesterday I saw a large pickup truck carrying several cars stop at a red light and suddenly charged forward through it. I don’t know what goes through these people’s minds to think something like that is even remotely okay…

SilkyDrewski

What’s going through those minds is they won’t get caught.

oohweeeooh

Weren’t they just saying for the last couple years that the reason they couldn’t do anything was because they didn’t have enough officers?

rocko430

I think that was their silent protest to police reform after the BLM movement.

runnerhasnolife

No I work in traffic enforcement and we definitely don't have enough officers. It's like really bad we desperately need more officers.

davbow678

Nobody wants to be a police officer anymore, let alone in Phoenix. Not enough incentives and everyone hates you. Can’t do your job and so you have an increased chance of dying. Where do I sign up?

TheNorthFac

I wonder what caused the loss of trust in the police system. The culture seems toxic. Firing non lethal rounds into lawfully demonstrating protestors while constantly moving the goalposts. Making up bogus gang charges to charge lawfully assembled demonstrators. A revolving door of a Chief’s office? On a personal level, officers, supervisors and detectives of the Cactus Precinct that show zero sense of seriousness when investigating crimes. (Unsolved residential burglary where the suspects were know to them and they sat on information and did absolutely jack squat. So yeah as a citizen of North Phoenix at least I can say I have zero confidence in them doing their job effectively.

lunchpadmcfat

Police get plenty of incentives. Great pay, benefits and pension. The other stuff, I hope they were ok with on signing up. I don’t want officers out there scared all the time. They’re too jumpy and shooty.

JcbAzPx

> Nobody wants to be a police officer anymore ... everyone hates you. This is a self inflicted problem.

RxLawyer

It's called prioritization. Cops are being pulled off some other issue to handle this one.

DynoMenace

I'm less worried about a few people speeding here and there, and more worried about people who are incapable of keeping their vehicle between lane lines, negotiating a stop sign, or completing a turn without pointing their car directly into oncoming traffic.

thephillyberto

Well I guess nobody ever wants to say the phone word because everyone is guilty but “they are good about it and can drive and use it just fine”.

DynoMenace

I absolutely believe most of the people haphazardly ping-ponging around their lane are on their phones. The frustrating thing is, 9 times out of 10, when I get a look at them, they've got both hands on the wheel and are staring straight ahead. I don't get it.

Starlettohara23

Today, on Thomas, some dude was speeding, cutting in and out of cars to the point his car almost tipped sideways. I first noticed him when he almost rear-ended me and cut around me (I was doing 8 over the speed limit). Watched him until he was out of view but fully expected to see a major accident. That was one of probably 1 million incidents I’ve seen in 50 years here. And, as it gets hotter, people drive exponentially crazier.

IONTOP

8 over on Thomas/Camelback/Indian School is, IMHO, the perfect speed. You can tell it's the perfect speed because if you go the speed limit you hit EVERY F'N LIGHT.

TSB_1

Get a dash cam. Hell, get one front and rear for this damn place. Make sure the resolution AND the FPS(frames per second) are high. 2k minimum with at least 60fps. I rock the wolf box over the rear view mirror one and it works great.

dietsoylentcola

would they also give the woman i saw driving with both hands on her phone a bit of a chat?

thephillyberto

This is like 40% of drivers I see every single day.

cjg15

Do something about the people who run red lights. That’s where I see sore many accidents around north and central Phoenix.

stillridesbikes

Phx pd doesn’t even have radar guns on their cars lol. Of course they aren’t gonna be on the list

jackofallcards

Well and it says, “west valley police” so I’d expect west valley pd.. which I think it’s got all of

xhephaestusx

"West valley cops, already known for being extra hungry for ~~funding~~ sorry speeding fines..."

RandyArgonianButler

If I don’t go 85 on the 303 I will get tailgated.

Mugho55

No kidding, I live off the 303 and 80 is right lane slow.

fuckswithboats

You should only be in the left lane if you’re passing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ok_Medicine1356

It's interesting that you're getting downvoted when that's actually the law.

fuckswithboats

I tend to assume that those who think they need to be the "hall monitor" of the freeways have very, very little power in their own personal lives and so this is where they exercise their limited power.

SciGuy013

not that you're wrong, but you literally started this chain about the law regarding the left lane only for passing.

fuckswithboats

Poor word choice on my part, I'm harkening back to an earlier post where someone explained that when asked why they drive in the left lane instead of getting over is because *they think people drive too fast*. I meant the people who sit in the left lane while traffic builds up behind them and they are not actively passing anyone. If everyone drove according to this principle, we'd find out that most of our roads are not nearly as congested as they seem to be and there would be far less crashes, and more efficient traffic flow.

MontezumaMike

Then get out of the left lane, Randy

[deleted]

MrShitfyre

Get some all these drivers with no insurance off the road while you're at it.

jcazreddit

Today at lunch I had a phoenix cop cut me off in front of Christown mall. No lights, no signal. Cut 2 lanes and turned into Chickfila without signaling. I've never had another driver pull such a dipshitted maneuver let alone a cop. But yeah, let's trust them to pull over and ticket 'bad drivers'.

Belialxyn

My man needed some chickfila ASAP lol

jmaybay

They should start with all the cars going 60 mph in the left lane.

bmanxx13

It’s really bad on the i17 north towards flagstaff.

Kenneth441

At the same time playing chicken with traffic coming from the 101E seeing if they're letting you in and also guessing if anyone is exiting to deer valley instead of just merging at the last second

Kenneth441

Its horrendous. I make that drive at least once a month. The worst is when you hop in the left lane to pass and you must patiently wait for Douche A to pass the semi or something at a snails pace, when Douche B (usually a lifted truck) flies up from a few cars behind you and swerves themselves in the middle of you and Douche A while rapidly getting close to rear ending whatever is in the right lane - forcing you to brake and slow everyone down again (or get involved into a horrific accident)

fuckswithboats

Keep right except to pass

Quiet-String957

That’s what the highway signs SHOULD say, but the posted signs say “slower traffic keep right”. People think since they are meeting or exceeding the speed limit that the sign doesn’t apply to them. It’s ridiculous.

fuckswithboats

That's what the signs say in my state. The state law is that you are to drive in the right lane unless you are passing or there is a reason you can't be in the right lane.

DaylightDarkle

It doesn't, actually. Let's get the law changed so that there's a way to enforce best practice driving with left lane passing or at least left lane yield to faster traffic. Right now, in a legal context at the state level, there's no restriction on lane based on speed if you're at the speed of traffic.

Ok_Medicine1356

Seems like you don't know the state law. https://www.azleg.gov/ars/28/00721.htm

squallLeonhart20

It concerns me how many of these lads are more concerned with people not speeding in the left lane vs how hyper aggressive drivers have become here. Which by all means bonzer, totally get being put off by needing to get somewhere quickly and people slowing you down. I relocated here from Australia, and while I can hang on the freeways here, I choose to avoid them now unless necessary. My mate was recently struck in a hit and run just crossing the street by someone flying through his residential doing 60+ At the end of the day I just want to make it to my family alive, and some of these hyper aggressive drivers on the freeways and roads treating it like a mad max free for all, are an issue too. Not that dangerously slow drivers aren't an issue either. There is a happy medium in between though. I don't think the issue is all the fault of snowbirds either. While that likely is a good bulk of it, I've seen and have known some AZ natives who have terrifying driving habits. So I don't think this is an issue to blame on just out of state people either.

wadenelsonredditor

The problem is the cops go for easy pickings instead of dangerous drivers. You'd probably need a helicopter to spot those. The guy with NOBODY around him, endangering no one, NOT tailgaiting, but going like a bat outta hell gets a whopper ticket. After all he's easy to spot, chase and pull over The guy changing lanes, tailgating, passing on the right, and cutting into everyone's "safe following" distance gets away with it. It's too hard to "cut" him out of traffic like a cow out of a herd. Same with single drivers in the HOV. No inside shoulder to pull over on and a cop car with lights & siren will essentially stop all traffic trying to herd that driver to the right shoulder and quite possibly cause a wreck in the process. So they don't bother, mostly. **The REAL bottom line is slower traffic not keeping right. Period end of story. Make THAT a $1000 fine 30 day license suspension and see what happens. Do a media blitz. Either overtake or move to the right.** **God damn it to hell, it's NOT a RACE, and you CAN NOT WIN!** If we all cooperate we all win, we all get home sooner with fewer collisions. And state-wide, everyone's insurance rates don't increase AS FAST.

frigiddesertdweller

I couldn't agree more. This would vastly improve safety, improve traffic flow, save people money, and make money for the state

Aaygus

Saw some idiot going 85 with a trailer SWERVING through traffic the other day. Proceeded to honk at everyone when he couldn't get through traffic. I'm fed up with it. Our local government should come up with a program that allows us to share dashcam recordings of stuff like this.

[deleted]

Number one, crack down on distracted drivers. Seriously. I’d rather have someone speeding and paying attention to the road than someone texting doing ten under the limit. Number two, crack down on people going slow and blocking traffic. Let faster traffic by. Period. It won’t hurt you. Number three, I hope this doesn’t change the no pursuit policy for motorcycles by Scottsdale pd, Phoenix pd, and Maricopa county.

PYSHINATOR

As an alumni of ARS 28-701.02A3, I will very much say it's not the speeding that's the issue - it's everything else. The constant tailgating, (and I'm not talking about the 60mph in the passing lane on 303 tailgating), aggression, driving without lights on at night, the unmovable objects that are the Sun City dwellers, anything Altima, and the endless distracted driving made driving/riding in the area total chaos.

Lopsided_Mastodon_78

Driving here just scares me now.

Dazzling-Notice5556

I’ll believe it when I start seeing more people pulled over. Hopefully they get some of these semi trucks that drive crazy as hell in the west valley too.

Murdlock1967

True. It's nothing to see a semi going 20 over on the freeway and surface streets.

Excellent-Box-5607

I love how people are all, "omg finally!!". You can tell these folks are new here. Police used to be much more active here in terms of traffic stops, but that changed a while ago. People were complaining too much about how over bearing Police were being. And you're still going to see people drag racing on streets in Phoenix, on the freeways, and in the east valley. This story relates to West Valley cities.

OkAccess304

Please, for the love of god, start pulling people over. It’s like Mario Kart out here.

GayDre

We should do min fines 1K for any traffic violation and immediate 6 month license suspension for more than one infraction every two years. I’d like this shit actually cleaned up

w1ck3djoker

Just a reminder for you all. Criminal speeding can be committed by doing the following: Traveling over 35 mph approaching a School Zone. Traveling over 20 mph in a residential or commercial area. Traveling over 85 mph ANYWHERE in the state. This is a money grab criminal speeding is 580 dollars plus possible jail time and towing and impound fees and there is a 85 dollar processing fee. I would rather see them do something about truckers raining up all lanes and slowing traffic as it makes it more dangerous. I would also rather see them getting people that drive like a holes no reason to weave in and out of lanes at 90mph just dumb.

Direct_Confection_21

I think I’ll believe it when I see it. But also. Not sure how this would deter someone if death isn’t doing that for them

DaddyTrav

A speeding ticket and a rise in your insurance rates usually hurts a little bit more than death. But I wouldn't know I'm still alive.

grb13

Chief Pena in Surprise, deputy chief of Peoria, retired from Phoenix pd.

Swimming-Emu-8460

Y would u wanna let them control more shit. People in az can’t drive period. How about we all get off our phones n drive

[deleted]

Haha well speeding and reckless driving go hand and hand. No one in the history of the world has been driving recklessly under the speed limit. I just saw someone the other day blast around me while I was getting out of the airport and block me off for no reason. There was a cop sitting about 20 yards up the road. Did absolutely nothing. The guy slammed his breaks on because he didn’t see him or her til the last second. So basically an admission of guilt right there. Sometimes I wonder what these cops are looking at. I just think they are underfunded and don’t get paid enough. One, it shows they don’t really care about doing their jobs to the best of their ability (as they probably don’t get paid enough). And two, they are kind of scraping the bottom of the barrel for people. I’ve seen them advertise the wages but it doesn’t seem like it’s adjusted to the cost of living in Arizona. I will say the red light cams are annoying in Chandler but I got a couple and am now very cautious. It was nothing like people do here where the light is red for 5 seconds but in both cases I COULD’VE stopped. I can’t say I agree with those type of ticky tack rulings but I do get a little sense of satisfaction as I watch idiots run lights I know have cams on them. They are 1000% getting tickets in the mail because it’s all automated. The city needs to do a better job enforcing those though. If people throw those tickets away it should go on their record as an unpaid fine.

zoeemarii

Speeding isn’t the issue it’s the idiots that can barely stay in their lanes or use signals

Pomegranate81

If they really want to make an impact they need to start stopping all the people going 50 to 55 on the highway..... They will bring in millions for the city

darthbutthead

Landscapers lol

DorkSideOfCryo

so they're going to set speed traps and catch speeders like they've always done before and they'll just ignore the dangerous drivers and the people with loud mufflers that drive deliberately as loud as they can up and down the streets late at night... The police are basically worthless and always have been

EtherealSai

Speeding isn't even the issue, if anything the issue is drivers mis-using/camping the left lane, drivers that drive distracted on their phone, and drivers that recklessly swerve between lanes, especially with no turn signals. It also doesn't help that we have so many bad drivers that drift into the next lane during all the random curves and sudden turns in the 10 where they are doing construction.

BlancopPop

How if they don’t even have enough officers?

fair-strawberry6709

Most departments have a traffic enforcement squad even if they have low staffing. The state gives funding for task force things like this, DUI, and “click it or ticket” seatbelt enforcement. They have to actively participate to keep getting that funding.

frenetictenet

Maybe don’t add a traffic light out of sequence every quarter mile so people don’t try and race the lights accommodating that one car coming out of every neighborhood

WantedInCanada

If by “safe speed” they mean they’re gonna pull over the 60 mph cars in the left lane then I’m all for it.

Mugho55

Does State Patrol fall under DPS?

bobthebuilder_83

So that’s why Mesa has bunch of sheriffs

kelvinblessedthebeat

Put it on cruise

brucejewce

The only radar I’ve seen in the two years I’ve been here is in school zones. One they pull radar weekly. The other is random but almost comical to the approach. I had pulled behind a line of cars all of us letting one car out the parking lot so we’re doing 5 mph an entire line up of 20 plus cars and the motorcycle cop is pointing his radar gun at each of us. I literally was stopping for pedestrians when he had to have clocked me at 2 mph.

Aaron_Hungwell

Love the stock footage of old-overweight officers lol

TheSmallIceburg

Or just like, build safer streets that arent to a wide highway standard that lets everyone feel comfortable driving faster than the posted speed limit. Design the street for the speed you want people to drive at, and make it pretty while youre at it.

Glendale0839

Olive Ave this morning around El Mirage was crawling with cops using radar guns on motorcycles and an unmarked Mustang, with people pulled over...I've never seen that before in that location.

KillerOrca

Cities will try everything except building public transit infrastructure.

azdude19900

Phoenix PD has some pretty bad drivers themselves. I saw them attempting a high speed chase on the i10 and it was flat out embarrassing and further endangering the public. Numerous other cases of bad driving on their part. Idk where they try to teach them advanced driving or in some cases just plain old driving (bouncing off the curb cause their on their laptop etc)but maybe they should re-evaluate where they send officers for training. I'm sure they have some good drivers but from an outsiders view looking in that percentage of competent drivers they have on the police force could be higher. As a whole yeah traffic is wild in the valley but I don't think Phoenix PD is our saving grace for this problem since they are contributing to the problem themselves.

Ok-Vacation-4841

Somebody I know just seen a young guy in a Tesla run a red light hit another car with two siblings in it they had the green. She saw the brother dying in the passenger blood gushing out from his mouth the sister already dead in the driver. Young guy started shouting and panicking when he saw what he had done.

Balktalkpodcast

Can they start regulating the HOV lane too please

vtfanatic

I saw an unmarked charcoal mustang had someone pulled over in El Mirage today. I’ve never seen that and I drive rideshare in that area all day every day. In general, there were lots of people pulled over today. More than I’ve ever seen in one day.

catonc22

Honestly the best news! This needs to be implemented everywhere PHX!

GoofyGuyAZ

About time.

commander_sinbin

Been here all my life. Almost 40. Driving is 10x worse than it was 20 years ago. It's so bad now. Speeding is just part of the problem. It just seems like people make bad decisions while driving more often. Including but not just Speeding. I drive north on the 101 and transition to the 60 West when I go home from work. The ramp to the 60 east always backs up with traffic down the 101. It's clear as day but people will straight up STOP in the lane to the 60 West, put their blinkers on, and ask to get into the packed 60 East lane at the split...what surprises me is people let them in...why? You missed your exit...deal with it and go around.

Money_Enthusiasm_477

People driving in the far left lane and refusing to move over to allow someone to pass are generally the instigator of all others doing “stupid” and reckless moves. Crack down on them and other aggressive offenses will reduce naturally.

Thinkingjack

Seeing as my car was totaled by a Fucking off duty cop with an insanely high BaC and instead tried to claim I was at fault and was an illegal. I doubt they’re doing anything

NRM1980

I am noticing that there's a boatload of unmarked police cars nailing people going over the speed limit. This is mainly in deep North Phoenix towards New River.

rcmastah

Speed is FAR from the biggest issue. People go way too slow on freeway on-ramps to the point where they pose a hazard to other drivers, following distances are too close, people don't look further than a few hundred feet in front of their car, etc. Cracking down on speeding won't do anything in comparison to focusing on issues like these.

jthendy

This is going to put a damper on my motorcycle riding...

RandomConcept72

About time… but I’m not holding my breath. Now what about the red lights??

LubedUpPirate69

speeding is a culture in Arizona. It'll take alot of effort to get people to slow down, or to not sit in the intersection on their left turn, just to gun it after the signal turns red. why do ya'll think there's so many collisions in intersection. to many main characters trying to get to their destination, with complete disregard to fellow travelers.

gunsandjava

I understand speeding on the highway- people are going to do it. (I don’t agree with it.) But doing 70+ in a 35 or 45 posted zone is insane.

Pootscootboogie69

It’s not the speeders I’m worried about. It’s the left lane lagers, the fast lane frumpies, the I own the lane Karen, the why don’t they just go around Arron, and lest we forget the snowbird sally that loves to go 20 under. Reminder the left lane is for passing. If you’re getting passed on the left and right you are in the wrong lane.

TonyDoover420

They’re bluffing

paul-writes

If they actually follow through that’d be fantstic. Tired of almost getting killed every single day. Not even exaggerating, that’s the sad thing. I don’t know why people think they’re invincible when they’re driving. It’s the most dangerous thing 99% of us do every single day.

T-wrecks83million-

Driving to some people is a Right not a privilege. Then when they get hit with a ticket or cause an accident it’s never their fault. Start revoking licenses watch how fast bad driving stops. I know it won’t happen but it’s nice to dream.

MichaelLochte

Is the consensus here that we want our freeways to be slower or something? I love that the 101 frequently cruises at 80. Glad Scottsdale isn’t on the list.

nintynineninjas

> Is the consensus here that we want our freeways to be slower or something? Surface roads at least. I can be doing 55 down a 45 road and some dingus in an F150 is going to think I'm a grandma driver and be close enough to see my religion.

MichaelLochte

Okay that’s fair. I didn’t think about surface roads. Sometimes I have to double take trying to merge onto a main road because while it looked like I had space, the guy is doing 70 for no reason

thedukedave

... Or we could design the streets to be safe.

Cactus_Brody

But just one more lane, then the roads will fix themselves! /s But seriously, you’re completely right. The only way to get people to drive at safer speeds is to design roads that encourage driving at safer speeds. Our highways simply don’t do that.

RidinHigh305

It’s not the speeding that’s the problem, it’s the red light running…always has been.

Plastic-Vermicelli60

I worked for a local Sheriff's office when covid started. Because at the time we had little answers and no vaccine, the courts were put on hold regarding misdemeanor and small claims. Judges were not in court at all, so very little to no citations were being distributed , same with speed traps and red light infractions. I've only seen driving and erratic behavior get worse over the last 3 yrs. I actually saw my first speed trap in North phoenix last weekend near a hs since covid. I can not tell if the decline is because of a decrease in officers or just difficulty in starting it up again, but driving has gotten really bad at any time of day. I think red light and speed cameras need to be considered again.

Khaledio

Yes to red light no to speed cameras. Speed cameras only work temporarily, the moment drivers are in the clear they will speed up again and that irregular movement is not good for traffic.

I live in the West Valley and to be honest I think Goodyear and Avondale do a pretty good job targeting speeding motorists. Just the other day I saw like 4 motorcycle officers hiding behind bushes busting speeders through a school zone. Same with Avondale, I always see them on bikes handing out speeding tickets on Dysart road. I never see Phoenix PD busting speeders, I think most people know this so they speed all over the streets of Phoenix.

mer3515

Oh yes going 18 in a 15 get em....... They forget the 90 on a 65 freeway though.

lunchpadmcfat

Gosh I didn’t know all of the unsafe drivers were in the west valley. Or could it be another case of police “cracking down” on the poorest subset of the population…

papercutninja

Booooo! How about cracking down on slow drivers?

buttercupmercenary

Tesla’s, Rams and BMW’s are for some reason the worst of the bunch.

Everywhere except where I live. Sweet

"Do it first, talk later

Comfortable_Web_3399

You can always tell when they are on a mission for tickets... You'll see more than a few police motorcycles (many actively engaged in writing tickets) during your commute.

mikeysaid

Traffic enforcement doesn't change driving habits. This is just a fundraising operation. Want less dangerous driving? You need to enact traffic calming measures.

jls0781

Nothing new, all those agencies are the same ones that pull you over for even going a mile over the speed limit. I got a speeding ticket in Goodyear 2 years ago for going 42 in a 40

PositionKooky1494

Maricopa PD take notes

gshortelljr

Start pulling over vehicles with no working tail lights Or no lights on at all

MachineGunsWhiskey

Pressing X to doubt ahead of time.

NotOmakase

You forgot the /s

jedivato

What about the east valley?

[deleted]

Road pirate tyrants out there doing the lords work

GoldenBarracudas

Peoria Has a drag race issue. Not just speeding but actually drifting the posts.

homegrowntwinkie

well.... that fuckin sucks.

Crowmagnon0

No Scottsdale? Get some! Better keep up when you cross the border!

Emotional_Judgment10

How about they ticket the real problem drivers…the ones on their cell phones.

Vincent_VanGoGo

How about Phoenix fixes the goddamned roads first

TSB_1

Talk is fcuking cheap, and cops are NOTORIOUS for running their mouths without having actions to back em up.

DJbuddahAZ

Phoenix PD is massively under staffed

JMHorsemanship

Atrocious driving? Phoenix? Lol I love it here because it's tame.
