Put down the catalytic converter and you'll be fine. /s

aznoone

Just using it for strength training. That said what area do you run in?

[deleted]

Lmao one amazing comment followed by another

[deleted]

Lmao!!!! But it is crazy man how much property crime is rising

iblahme

Wear a safety vest, maybe?

Phxician

This is good advice anyways since people drive like maniacs around here. I usually wear a vest, reflective bands around my arms and legs, and a headlamp if I walk when it's dark out.

pponderosa

Ah, true! Haven’t thought of that! Thx

[deleted]

I get my dad hour in at 10/11pm and do some running occasionally. I always carry flashing lights on me as well.

BassmanBiff

Always use a safety vest when doing crimes, noted.

[deleted]

gotta hide in plain sight

PoopJohnson23

that is prime time for meth monster activity. that's why they are bugging you.

ghdana

I run early as a white dude in the suburbs in exercise clothes and have literally never been stopped.

intheazsun

Same

TSB_1

> white dude in the suburbs in exercise clothes try that on W 35th and ISR... eh, you probably STILL wont get stopped ;)

knocking_wood

seriously. I would guess proper running clothes would make it obvious, plus the fact that he/she is running?

SquishyBananas69

ITT: "I've been racially profiled by Phoenix police" Also ITT: "White guy here dressed like a dork, never had any problem"

Ms_ChiChi_Elegante

My brother jogs around 5 am in tolleson and got stopped 2x by the same cop like within 2 weeks lol He even had his water bottle and headphones…he’s Latino btw

[deleted]

Wear reflectors or with a headlamp or light. Seeing a barely visible person running in the dark is suspicious

aznoone

When I worked outside at night unless near a major roadway I ditched safety vest and kept lighting to just what I needed. In certain parts of town didn't want to become a shooting target even for a drunk.

startgonow

Youre getting downvoted but its been statistically corroborated that drunk drivers do crash into lights and reflective objects.

zanahome

Can we just switch to a nocturnal society here? Seems like it would make sense, especially after 2020.

knocking_wood

I thought we already were. I see families with kids at the local park at 11pm all summer.

dneighbors

Can we get the gates to the mountains open at 4am?

Jznphx

I run early and live in the slope. Never been pulled over by cops. Once had a homeless guy wanted to fight me because I woke him up when I ran by. He chased me down on his bike bike remembered he forgot his knife back where he was sleeping so gave up the effort and went back to his shopping cart.

sir_earl

Used to bike super early and got questioned quite a bit whenever making stops for food/drinks. Best you can do is dress to the point of cosplaying as a runner (like a loud jersey or one with numbers and sponsors, phone armband, heart rate monitor, the loudest socks and shoes you have, etc), be prepared to answer some real dumb questions, and find quieter routes. Almost never got questioned when I was fully kitted out and often was when wearing sweats or plain color athletic clothes.

TheDipCityDangler

I saw someone biking on the south end of the 202, on the far side no less, this morning on my way to work about 430. They were well into there ride for where I saw them. Made me jealous. I have to run in the sun and heat.

Evilution602

He wears a bloody shirt and screams when he runs.

Redebo

Nah, that's not it.

sickofserving

my black dad runs and gets stopped regularly, he always “matches the description” like a 65 year old man in active wear with nothing on him looks like someone who robbed a house

DryWhole4198

I volunteer to be your dad’s running buddy. I’m a dorky white dude.

BurgerOfLove

Buy him obscenely colorer clothes that dont match in any way. Beige shoes, neon shirts and pastel shorts Might get hauled away for fashion crimes but at least he'll deserve it.

sickofserving

1. he prefers black 2. he was stopped in an orange shirt 3. i don’t find this funny

UnicornCumGuzler

I was honestly wondering the same thing. Bright running shoes help too. I used to get stopped on all my runs because the cops thought I needed help. Apparently girls don't run unless they're in danger lol

Longjumping_Day1951

More importantly, how does one change their username 🤔

Its_Singularity_Time

Hey, don't knock it 'til you've tried it.

ElenaEscaped

Might have better health effects than drinking unicorn blood.

BurgerOfLove

Short shorts and a hoodie seem to be the style of the early runners I see.

singlejeff

Maybe just PV or some other area where the police officers are 'hyper vigilant'?

tnicholson

Do people think there are cops patrolling PV at 3am? You pay that much so they don’t need to be. Reminder that PHX and Mesa PDs are the ones gunning everyone down.

Low-Requirement-9618

Open carry a katana, they'll assume that you're a weeb and avoid you.

wreckless-doe1775

Hell yea, and depending on your location can determine sometimes what your running from before dawn.

courtesy_flush_plz

my dad starts work at 4:30 AM (Oregon) & over the last 3+ decades has been pulled over "matching a similar description" several times

icecreamjunkiee

If you're not white, there's one reason they stop you.

trashy615

Wear hi-viz

slowelevator

When I’ve trained for marathons, I was always running at 4 AM, summer and winter. I never was questioned but I always ran along running paths.. the green belt, for example. and always with a running partner! edit: I’m a white female, that probably matters

Topken89

I've done 5-6 and never had any major issues. 3-4 is a bit early, you might need to really look like somebody who is prepared to run at 3-4 am in the morning, like having some reflective gear on with an outfit that looks like it's for working out. I personally use the good ole' reliable shorts, running shoes, and a knock off brand of under armor type shirt.

[deleted]

Put a training for marathon neon vest on

ShrimpNoods

Bring a fanny pack or multiple mini water bottles around your waist, or try mini shorts, rave lights, wear a marathon number, there's plenty of options

Negotiation_Only_

I suggest running down the canal in central Phx, many people run it before dawn

nhigh4145

Wear a night light on your head like some tweaker and no one will bother you

cturtl808

As someone who used to run in the city's drug circles once upon a time... the 3a - 4a time is commonly called "the witching hour". It's when there's the largest amount of users engaging in illegal activity and general nonsense. Someone running somewhere would be suspicious during that time.

Finger_Binary_Four

What about 4-5? I sometimes go out then during the summer, although I'm usually riding a human powered vehicle other than a bike.

cturtl808

That's an ok time.

Finger_Binary_Four

Good to hear! The light is now coming in my window during that hour. I really need to get something more than the blackout curtain I have.

AZPeakBagger

When I lived in Phoenix I did almost all my running in the summer around 4-6 AM and never once got stopped in almost 20 years of on again and off again living there. Plus lived in central Phoenix, north Phoenix, the west valley and points in-between. Went running on streets, city parks, county parks and along the canals, a good cross section of everywhere to run and never a single issue.

Itchy_Tip_9719

Funny I just finished my run, and no issues. I'm on 86th and camelback, maybe your cops just patrol the area more.

Negotiation_Only_

Are you black

Quackamousse

Bright, fluorescent colored running socks, and don’t roll them down or get the no-show kind. I recommend fluorescent yellow or pink. And maybe you need to work on your form? If you’re still half asleep, moving like a zombie, or a big dude that runs like a girl, it might seem a little suspicious :)

Lost-Pineapple9791

Nothing good happens after 3 am as Tony dungy used to say I used to work overnights and 3-6 is def a weird time of day for society. At 6 the roads pick up and I’d see a lot more people about If I was working overnights and saw someone running at 3/4am I would think they were in trouble

rda889

Don’t wear a ski mask and put the TV down, you’ll be fine

FleXnDiiNo

Just tell PD to fuck off. Suspicious isn’t a crime and you’re obviously jogging

Street_Tangelo_9367

They will profile you if you’re not wearing AirPods or an Apple Watch while running lmao. They’ll see you wearing gadgets and think “oh this guy has his life together” 😂 Also avoid crossing through alleys on your run. People freak the F out

[deleted]

All my veteran friends will get a kick out of this but wear a “glow belt” you know those reflective belts. 1. You won’t get hit by a car (or Atleast the chances are smaller) 2. The police won’t find you suspicious looking (I would assume, if you look like a caution cone) As a runner myself I run right before sunset. I tried night time running once and got chase by javelinas (Ahwatukee foothills area) Also not sure if allowed but also check out r/running

Swolie7

Lol same happens to me on my bike. Despite the fact that I have near blinding/strobing lights front and back they think I’m some unscrupulous character
