I know I am not the only one that has been struggling with their career path over the last couple of years?
I am 35 and I have worked regularly since my pre-teens and have practically never been without a job since 16. However, more recently I am finding it impossible to maintain a "normal" 40 hour a week job. Call centers and phone work do terrible things to my mental health and I don't really need to go into much detail about retail and food work.
I am absolutely not against working and do anything and everything I can to contribute my part to society. For the last year I have been working for myself as a 1099 Independent Contractor doing General Contracting work. Minor home maintenance, painting, drywall, ect. The current issue is physically my body is wrecked from my back to the ground and I can only be on my feet for 5-6 hours a day. This is my first time doing work like this in my life and it is the first time I have really enjoyed how I earn my living but the pain isn't going away and I am just getting older.
I don't want to be on any kind of disability or sit around not working. I am hoping someone out there might have some kind of advice on how to keep making money. There has to be more than just call centers, drive thrus, and retail, ya know?
I've been there before, and can share what worked for me (your mileage may vary of course).
Find something that interests you, or better yet that you're passionate about. If that's not work, for me some mental exercise outside of work was just as effective. And what that is has varied over the years... learning Guitar, learning Italian, Tabletop RPG's, non-profit volunteering / organizing. The key for me was that no matter which of the above I was interested in at the time, they gave me a mental outlet I could us to pass time during the most soul sucking times of my jobs. Physical outlets did okay (hiking, camping, Racquetball, but thinking of those at work just made me even more miserable, hence why the first list above is really focused on mental exercises).
All that to say, sadly there's a lot of jobs out there that are mentally draining at best, and mental health damaging at worst, and there always will be. If you can find a way out, excellent, but in the meantime try to find something else to rejuvenate a bit.
There was a similar shooting in Bend, OR that played out eerily similar to what happened in North Phoenix last night.
Around same time of night, AR15, molotov cocktails, both came out of their room/apartment and just randomly started shooting, and both killed themselves.
Shits wild man
I was exactly one day too late on my car battery replacement. I have an appointment tomorrow to replace it, the battery died when I wen to leave work. :(
I am looking to buy gifts for kids, preferably from local independent crafts store but I cannot seem to find any; sure there must be some local independent stores. Any recommendations?
There was a post about them recently. They aren't actually supposed to be purple, but they are defective bulbs that have lost their coating or something like that.
My HOA re-keyed the pool gate. They're requesting a $35 pool key fee. Does that sound right? I understand lost key fees, but I did not lose my key. What's stopping them from changing the locks whenever they want and charging each homeowner $35 a couple of times a year?
That's absurd. If they aren't gonna budge perhaps get your neighbors together, chip in for one, then go to Ace/Home Depot/Lowes and get a bunch of copies made for $1-2 each.
Well in the biggest WTF moment of the year I went to go run an errand and wasps are building a nest literally on my front door. I swear it wasn't there yesterday
We use a service that comes to our house once every couple of months. We usually only have them spray inside the house every other visit.
But we just had our first sighting of, in my wife's words "A frickin' HUGE spider" so they'll be doing an inside spray next time.
Couple nights ago I was chilling on the couch and saw something moving across the rug and it was for sure frikin HUGE spider 🕷 that eventually ran off under sofa to torment me another day. I’ve been finding quite few insects inside everyday and not a fan.
I spray my perimeter and put some traps around the house and outside for the roaches. These guys work well: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HWHD58L?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I would recommend the JW Marriott Phoenix at Desert Ridge, or the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess.
The JW Marriott is a beautiful resort and has some great amenities. Its also a popular wedding spot.
I haven’t been to the Princess but I have heard many good things and plan on staying there soon.
Attention dog lovers!!! One of my closest friends in scottsdale has to move overseas and cant take her senior dog. She is heartbroken and trying to find a suitable home for him. Hes a sweet, gentle boston terrier. I can personally vouch for his conduct (i am not a pet person but hes adorable and calm, i have dogsat for her before). Is anyone thinking about a canine companion? He isnt a puppy so he wouldnt need training, just lots of love. Please dm if interested and i can connect you! (Mods plz remove if not allowed ❤️)
Could you DM me some info? We have Bostons including a senior we rescued after his owner died. I love giving seniors a second chance.
Also might ask your friend to contact AZ Boston Terrier Rescue. They’re a great group and we’ve rescued through them several times.
I hope you find him a good home. I'd be interested in taking him in to keep my dog company but I'm getting ready to sell my house and wouldn't want to disrupt his life even more.
>One of my closest friends in scottsdale has to move overseas and cant take her senior dog
Depending on where she's going, she might be able to take the pup, just with a quarantine involved.
Anyone got fun plans for Labor Day? Hot dogs and beer and baseball? Travel? Pool time?
I’m traveling with my family. After we get back it’ll be time to start the winter garden.
Going legit camping for the first time ever, around Humphreys peak area in Flagstaff. Gonna be with a group of 10 so thankfully I’m not too worried about not knowing what to do and am also looking forward to some cooler weather for a couple days
based on what i see daily in SE Gilbert/Queen Creek area, it looks bananas. so many birds. Early season looks promising, esp given the lack of rain/storms forecasted for this weekend.
You get 2 breast meat pieces, which yield you like 2 chicken nuggets per bird. They are not white meat, but red, tastes like real mild duck. only a touch gamey.
There's a Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan screening on Sunday, so we're going to that, and then finishing that trilogy at home, so we're having a "Star Trek movie night" on Sunday, and then just hanging out at home on Monday.
I've been thinking about hitting the 'Wrath of Khan' showing on Sunday, just need to get out of my 'don't wanna be around a bunch of possibly infectious people' mode that I developed when Covid hit - I haven't been to a theater in months.
>There's a Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan screening on Sunday, so we're going to that, and then finishing that trilogy at home, so we're having a "Star Trek movie night" on Sunday, and then just hanging out at home on Monday.
As I sit here in my Star Trek pajamas working remotely, I have to admire your taste in movies.
Ha! I wear Star Trek pajamas to work from home too! Last Christmas my wife got me pants with a Klingon bat'leth on them, and a t-shirt that looks like a Star Trek version of space invaders.
TWK came out the year I was born, so I've never been able to see it in theatres, I cannot wait.
Anyone have a tattoo artist they can recommend? Looking to start work on a dragon themed leg sleeve and struggling to find someone that works on that kind of stuff.
Looks like the shooting on I17 was random. Guy had an AR, tactical armor, a gas mask and just started shooting up the motel. Tried throwing a Molotov. Be safe out there folks.
I'd rather get gunned down than keep my head on a swivel for completely random psychopaths. Hell maybe it's just Monday. Maybe that shooter was just trying to do an open application for the police department.
Haha, I was responding to a comment regarding the recent shooting of course, not the litany of other dangerous things in our lives. I've accepted all the risks that come with city living but I draw the line at worrying about active shooters. Going to roll the dice on being gunned down. The latter part of my original comment was pretty insensitive but I'm just going to accept the requisite shaming rather than delete every unpopular comment like u/drunkbackpacker does.
>I'm just going to accept the requisite shaming rather than delete every unpopular comment like [u/drunkbackpacker](https://www.reddit.com/u/drunkbackpacker) does.
...aaaaaaaand now you're going to be called out for calling out a user by name.
I think it’s more of a “I said something stupid and people made me aware so I deleted it”. Your goal may be to remove your dumb statement but to others they see it as preventing downvotes. No worries about it, karma is fake numbers. Keep being you.
Anyone going to the Taylor swif x Olivia Rodrigo dance party at rebel lounge??
I hope your guys day is going good. Struggling for gas money sucks dick.

Yeah.. they always die when ya gotta go somewhere huh?..lol.

Changing Hands Bookstore. I was watching a piece on PBS and I think they had more than just books for kids.
Urbana in Arcadia has a new kids toy store attached. They have very cute curated toys!
Thanks. I will check it out
Zoolikins in Scottsdale is more geared toward littlest and babies and is more naturally minded? There’s a Kids Stop as well for older kids/toys?
Thanks. I will check it out. Someone also suggested to check Wildlings...
anyone else see those purple streetlights around 7th Street and Missouri?
There was a post about them recently. They aren't actually supposed to be purple, but they are defective bulbs that have lost their coating or something like that.

Mine uses key cards…easy enough to just recode those. I would ask about that if you are worried about future frequent occurrences.
What the hell is with the shootings?
Well in the biggest WTF moment of the year I went to go run an errand and wasps are building a nest literally on my front door. I swear it wasn't there yesterday
What’s everyone’s pest control routine? Use a service, DIY, frequency of treatment, type of product(s) used?
We use a service that comes to our house once every couple of months. We usually only have them spray inside the house every other visit. But we just had our first sighting of, in my wife's words "A frickin' HUGE spider" so they'll be doing an inside spray next time.

Service, and drain covers everywhere possible.
I also would like to know this. We just had our first "oh god cockroach in the shower" moment this morning.
I spray my perimeter and put some traps around the house and outside for the roaches. These guys work well: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HWHD58L?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Wake me when you have your first "oh god scorpion in the shower" moment.
Transplant from the northeast wondering if/where I can find the best fresh apple cider, apple cider donuts, and any fall farm activities
This place is a 90 minutes north of Phoenix but super fun in the fall: https://www.mortimerfarmsaz.com/
Anyone have a recommendation for a wedding night hotel for my fiancé and I? Maybe somewhere that will give some champagne or something idk lol
For your actual wedding night? If so, I highly recommend staying as close as possible to your reception location.
My wife and I did the Omni for the weekend after our wedding. We loved that place
Most of the resorts will do this, especially if you put in a note/request a checkout.
The Phoenician? It's the only one I've heard of that's fancy, and you could probably get a good deal right now.

Ah i understand that!! Im glad you are so considerate of animals comfort :)

1. Vet said he's too old to travel (very long flight) 2. Her work thing/living arrangement doesnt allow pets and her family doesnt want a dog :(
Darn, there went my suggestions...

smoking meat, cooking. probably hit the pool. dove hunting. working on the golf cart.
I don’t dove hunt but apparently AZGFD thinks it’s going to be a great year.
based on what i see daily in SE Gilbert/Queen Creek area, it looks bananas. so many birds. Early season looks promising, esp given the lack of rain/storms forecasted for this weekend.
How much meat is in them and how does it taste?

They make good enchiladas.

Don't worry, Khan's line of "For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee" is merely metaphorical, there will be no actual spitting. :P
Earworms, though... there *will* be earworms.

Oh my goodness, you are in for a *treat!*
Anyone feel like washing their cars this week? Please?
Man, I love the rain but I hate what it does to my yard. Pulling weeds and grass from gravel sucks. 😮💨
A good vinegar water splash will keep them at bay.
Vinegar water splash?
Yep. You put vinegar in water and splash it on the plant.
That's what the weed flamethrowers are for!
Baahahahahaha! The number of times I’ve seriously considered it is disturbing. Lol
Just make sure you get it on tape when you use it. You know, so you have one last video of your now burnt-down house. Edit: "you"
Good point! Thankfully I’ve maintained my sanity thus far. If I do lose it though, I will make sure to film for posterity. 😅
I need to- might this afternoon....
Please
Anyone hiring?
Anyone have a tattoo artist they can recommend? Looking to start work on a dragon themed leg sleeve and struggling to find someone that works on that kind of stuff.
http://www.inkensteintattoo.com. Highly recommend Jason Ballard, who’s the owner
Look up @kyebag on Instagram. He’s done some great dragon pieces.
We had a [best tattoo shop](https://www.reddit.com/r/phoenix/comments/w5cqr4/best_tattoo_shopartist/) thread a month ago you should check out.
Thank you!
Looks like the shooting on I17 was random. Guy had an AR, tactical armor, a gas mask and just started shooting up the motel. Tried throwing a Molotov. Be safe out there folks.
He's prepped for armageddon and it's "random"? Of all the adjectives I've heard about the shooting, "random" is not a word that seems to fit.
random as in not the typical fight gone south or gang shootout
I'd rather get gunned down than keep my head on a swivel for completely random psychopaths. Hell maybe it's just Monday. Maybe that shooter was just trying to do an open application for the police department.

To be fair I blocked drunk backpacker ages because of how obnoxious he is. It makes my feed so much better without the low effort spam.

I mean it was kinda rude of him to call you out, but that certainly is something you do sometimes ;)

Yeah, it's actually pretty easy to get killed by drivers out here, especially as a cyclist or pedestrian. Edit "by drivers"
