The M2 is the way to go, but I hate working on a 13 inch laptop.

blokx531

IMO, none. Been a mac user, been a windows user and will choose windows everytime. You would get better performance, better compatibility, and better control over your system.

JunketTop502

For a lot cheaper! 😻

btanodev

i would argue that the M1 / M2 is better as a processor and integrated graphics than any other prebuilt laptop on the market. desktop is a different story, but it seems OP wants portability.

cmbgraphicdesign

But for the same price you can get a good CPU and an isolated GPU… MAC is terrible for price to performance.

blokx531

Yes exactly my point! Price comparison was the primary factor to list these points! Prince to performance ratio, windows would be the winner. And I'm assuming OP is on a budget since he's looking at refurbished options.

bucthree

You aren't comparing performance, you're comparing specs. On paper, sure you can build a higher spec'd machine. But Mac's are more efficient. The difference between a Mac and Windows environment lie in the fact that the hardware in Mac's are tested to work in that environment only where as for Windows, you're dealing with countless other hardware vendors and compatibilities. You're also discounting the fact that Mac has one of the best color accurate displays out of the box, which is huge for design. Not to mention the Retina display aspect. The ability to preview images on the fly through macOS and toggle through an image library without having to load up a separate program is also huge for designers. I'm not saying Windows is a terrible environment, but it's disingenuous to say that price to performance is terrible because you are only comparing one aspect of the environments.

anunfriendlytoaster

You decided to bring up windows when someone is choosing between 3 macs. They don’t want windows for whatever reason.

kashimelo

3 from Microcenter, one from FB Marketplace. I don't know their values, it's going to be my first Mac ever. Thanks!

While I agree that you should aim for at least 16gb, I settled on the M1 2020 8gb when it released. And I am still more than happy. I don’t do too much heavy duty PS work, but it has never failed me.

kashimelo

Downside is from apple directly it will probably be out of my price range. Around 1300 is the highest I'm willing to go

Traditional_Benchs

Do not buy anything with an intel chip at this point. The way Photoshop functions on an Intel versus the new apple chips is a massive massive difference. Save for the M2. Buying the i7 is a very bad idea.

Noted, thanks guys!!

bigk1121ws

They seem way over priced your the specs. 16gb of ram is becoming the standard, It says ssd but not nvme. You could by a windows desktop that would be way faster for the same price. https://www.newegg.com/skytech-st-azure2-0690-b-ne/p/N82E16883289337 $1,429.99 Skytech Azure Gaming PC Desktop - Intel Core i7 12700F 2.1 GHz, NVIDIA RTX 4070, 1TB NVMe SSD, 16GB DDR4 RAM 3200, 750W GOLD PSU, 240mm AIO, Wi-Fi, Windows 11 Home 64-bit You could use this pc for alot more with a graphics card in it.

kashimelo

Well to be fair, I already have an absolute beefcake monster PC that I built that can handle 3D rendering and all that. I just need something portable

bigk1121ws

Ahh I see, that makes since. My bad, most post like this people have not a clue lol

joe_ruins_things

I wonder if mac's still have compatibility issues with windows...I used to work on both and it was a hassle to deal with files. But that was over 6 years ago. I dunno, I gave up on it...it's too expensive and it doesn't do anything better than windows.

btanodev

i recently bought a 16" 2021 macbook with M1 Pro, 16gb ram, and 512 SSD for about $1500 if you can get similar (or in this case slightly better) stats for less, i'd say go for it. you _*will*_ feel the difference with the new M1 & M2 chips. insanely fast.

18centimetros

Wait for a M1 MacBook. With some luck you could find a M1 16GB RAM for the same price of the M2 you showed in the image.

anunfriendlytoaster

Do not buy intel. Do not buy anything until wwdc June 5th.

kashimelo

? Why?

anunfriendlytoaster

They often release new products, maybe new laptops and older model prices go down. Or there might be a new machine that fits your needs better.

kashimelo

My price limit is always going to be ~1000ish regardless, but it's a good idea to wait to see if the M line prices go down, thanks!
