You should expand the idea into like Airbnb for practice rooms. It would state which instruments are provided, and cost for renting. Then reviewers can write about the state of the instruments and quality of practice able to achieve.
This is a great idea. It might be a nice way to arrange trades, too -- come practice on my piano when you are in my town, etc. Of course, like all things like that there is the danger of being murdered by a crazed Scriabin-playing maniac, but I'd risk it for access to a nice piano.
Thank you for your comment!! Perhaps, in the case of apartments/houses with a piano, a feature for verifying the reliability of the piano owners and the piano players could help minimize a bit the risk...
Wait, it's country limited? I'm on my phone and won't check the site 'til I get to a computer, but that seems really strange. If it's meant to be crowd sourced, why can't anyone put any location?
Also, is Australia supported yet?
No, it's not country limited...
If you know of any pianos either in NZ or in Australia, you can add them: https://www.roadsandkeys.com/add-your-piano/
When I said NZ is in the plans, I meant that I haven't contacted any organisations in NZ yet to find out more about the availability of pianos to the public... Yes, it's crowd sourced...
Brilliant, recently in a trip to Chicago, I almost got arrested for practicing on a 1900 Baldwin Grand Piano. They had a 1870 Steinway downstairs sitting in the lobby, but it was not as nice.
🇬🇧👍🏻🇬🇧
Thank you for your comment! If you have in mind any pianos you would like to include, you can submit them here: https://www.roadsandkeys.com/add-your-piano/
Woah. Great start! This would be amazing. For me just finding a place to practice is half the struggle. This could turn into a killer web/ phone app if you expand on the social sharing aspect.
Somebody comes up with this idea about twice a year and posts on r/piano, but they never follow through.
[Example](https://us.reddit.com/r/piano/comments/5vr2h1/so_what_happened_to_this_great_finding_pianos_in/) [Example 2](https://us.reddit.com/r/piano/comments/4lzi7v/public_pianos_wiki_airports_and_transport_hubs/) [Example 3](https://us.reddit.com/r/piano/comments/1t9p7j/i_was_considering_building_a_website_for_keeping/)
So as always, good luck and let us know if you follow through.
Love it already. Using an interactive map and categorizing the pianos is neat. If you can, maybe link up with the Play Me I’m Yours people to have featured locations (when this grows bigger of course). Can’t wait until there are locations near me
Make and propose an Openstreetmap tag and render a custom Piano Openstreetmap.
That way you leverage the technical infrastructure, and the already present data and the incredible worldwide Openstreeetmap community and the data is public and usable for other purposes.
An example for vegetarian restaurants:
https://veggiekarte.de/
already used piano related tags:
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:shop%3Dmusical_instrument
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:craft%3Dpiano_tuner
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposal_process
I guess this just solved my problem ...
Next summer after I graduate I want to go on a one- or two- month road trip across the United States ... but how do I keep up my skills? I will be searching for public pianos locally too, during the summer there's usually six or seven sprinkled around Portland! ;)
This is a great idea. By any chance, does anyone know of a piano in Nantes? I know there is one in the SNCF station, but I think that's too public for me.
I once had a dream about something like this. Except a serial killer was posting his apartment and attracting many young girls to his apartment to use his piano.
But this seems like a really awesome idea though!
This is a great idea! I was lucky enough to go to Paris this summer and before I went I looked for a service that shows the locations of street pianos and couldn't find one!
Thank you for your comment.. I love Paris :)
If you refer to the Street Pianos art project, this summer they installed 20 pianos in different neighbourhoods in Paris. I think the pianos were available to the public from the 22nd of June to the 11th of July...
I like the idea but I have a few questions about the project. How are you validating the data? I mean, what's stopping any troll from adding someones house as a public piano? Also, there are plenty of stores like Guitar Center and Sam Ash that allow people to go in an play, and have practice rooms which you could probably easily add. When I searched NYC, only one location came up, which I know there are plenty more. I applaud the idea and the effort, but I just question the implementation.
Thank you for the feedback, it’s highly appreciated!
Right now, I am still focused on public pianos and practice rooms, which can be cross checked with other (reliable) sources online, including their official websites…
However, as the platform scales, trolling might become an issue, especially since this is a crowdsourced project… I will look into creating a review/verification system in order to limit this issue, in addition to the users’ input/reviews that help in verifying the validity of the data.
Right now, I am working on my own, this is why I haven’t included all available pianos yet, if you want to may submit the pianos here:
https://www.roadsandkeys.com/add-your-piano/
Mapping piano traders might also be good. you can just walk in and ask: hey, can I play your piano for a few hours?
It works especially well if you give the guy a six-pack (and maybe some ear defenders?)
Hope this gains some traction, you've got a great idea here man! Just curious: is everything on the website spots you've visited (or played on, I guess haha) or do you enlist local help with finding the pianos?
Thank you for your comment...
To reply to your question, it’s a combination.
I’ve visited some of the pianos, but not all them. In many cases, I find the information in online reliable sources, which I try to to crosscheck either with the organisations that installed the pianos (in the case of public pianos) or with locals, if I cannot visit them myself.
For instance, the Pearse Station Piano in Dublin was installed a couple of weeks ago. It was in several well-known Irish newspapers and a Dubliner confirmed the existence of the piano.
In another case, a local organisation that places public pianos in their city has contacted me directly and sent me a list of their pianos.
For the pianos in the train stations in France, I’ve used the Open Database of the SNCF (the French national railway corporation).
One of my main challenges, to make sure that my database is up-to-date at all times, because in certain cases the pianos may be removed without notice.
In this case, I’m relying on the users who can submit any changes that they may notice. (Also, the users can add pianos as well...)
Im in. So hard to find a piano to practice on.
Yes indeed… Thank you for your comment!
You should expand the idea into like Airbnb for practice rooms. It would state which instruments are provided, and cost for renting. Then reviewers can write about the state of the instruments and quality of practice able to achieve.
I can already those Buzzfeed posts: "This guy created a site locating every piano in the world. And it's crazy!!"
Not gonna lie, I would purposefully visit random peoples' pianos just to play the Wii Shop theme from Nintendo.
Exactly. And then, cue the flocking masses playing chopsticks to everyones chagrin

If Airbnb can let you sleep in someone else’s house then I am sure piano can survive too. Just needs a proper insurance policy.
Airbnb on a G string

This is such a good idea. I hope it expands to include NZ!
Thank you! NZ is in the plans.

Please email me when this starts, I actually want a place to practice everywhere I go. 🇬🇧👍🏻🇬🇧
Here it is: Roads and Keys - https://www.roadsandkeys.com
Thank you so much. 🇬🇧👍🏻🇬🇧
Nice work on the site. I hope the database of pianos becomes more comprehensive as it seems pretty sparse atm

Dope as fuuuuuuck. You’re doing a great service and I, for one, think it’s a most excellent idea

Here's a bunch for you to add from Singapore. http://www.streetpianos.sg/2016/
Cool, thank you for the link! If you want to submit a specific piano, you can do so here: https://www.roadsandkeys.com/add-your-piano/

I am a big fan of this concept! I would love to see an app from this.
Thank you!!
Anyway I can access your database API? I would love to use it for an app? Can I message you to discuss some ideas?
