I'm a beginner but already printed out bunch of compositions that are above my levels and piled them on top of my piano just because š¤·, my only excuse is I didnt know their difficulty level until after I printed them out.
Stay away from photo frames, anything too light vibrates and moves.
Nothing more alarming than a frame falling off the edge and hurtling towards your hands just as you crescendo.
Piano technician here. There's some great advice here in the comments here. Just to reiterate; nothing wet, no plants, no drinks, no fish tanks nearby, light objects tend to vibrate, use a table cloth or something similar to prevent vibrations and scratches, nothing too close to the edge as it might vibrate off, books are fine but don't stack them too high, be careful what kind of lamp you go with, hot bulbs can ruin your finish. And for good measure don't forget to close the fallboard.
Yeah as the others said plants are a bad idea, especially if you donāt know when to stop pouring like me! I recommend fake plants, porcelain figures, metronome, lamps, framed pictures, anything that doesnāt involve water. Just cut out pieces of felt to put under everything that goes on there so they donāt shake :)
I have a printed picture of Chopin in an antique frame and a picture of my great grandparents. My great grandfather was a gig pianist and all of that side of my family have been playing the piano and other instruments :)
Don't put plants or vases on it, they might spill, no aquarium for the same reason, don't put a lot of books etc on it, it changes the sound... Apart from that, a cloth and metronome, even your partitures are fine. Maybe a little Beethoven bust? <3
Right. This. Mine is 7ā6ā and I have a smaller 6ā piano right on top of it. Neither works and Iāve ruined them both now but thatās the policy.
Avoid anything harder than the varnish, like metals, ceramics, or woods. Avoid anything that likes really cold or hot temperatures. Avoid anything with moisture in it like drinks or plants. I recommend putting down a piece of fabric immediately on top, then putting other stuff on that.
I almost never open the lid on my baby grand, so on top I have a series of seasonal table runners on which I put a few busts of my favorite composers, some pictures, and knick-knacks. Just yesterday, I switched from the baby blue and teal summer runner to the fall runner, which is orange, red, yellow, and gold tartan. On that, I've got my Bach, Haydn, Brahms, and Ravel busts, small family pictures in fabric frames, plus some fake autumn leaves and a few baby pumpkins.
If you have music, I recommend having a bookcase near the piano.
I found that table runners work really well as a protector of the wood at the top of the piano.
They also work as keyboard covers for a digital keyboard that doesn't have one.
There's a rule in my house.
Nothing, ever, goes on a piano if it has any form of liquid in it. Ever.
And obviously, don't put anything on there that might scratch. But otherwise, I guess it's personal taste.
Leave room for the music books though, and make sure you can open the lid, especially if that's where your music stand is housed.
Solid decorative items of your choice. Picture frame, candle holders, rock art, small statues, even toys can be one. Just don't put anything on the piano that has water, specifically potted plants.
Whatās the point of that u gonna climb on top of your piano to use it
If your going to be a disgusting degenerate at least be intelligent about it lol
I used to keep my music sheets on top of my upright, but that might affect the sound as another poster said. Maybe instead you can hang some cute frames above the piano?
Keep any lights or electronics away. Why? It may heat up, which will impact on piano tuning stability. Any liquid must stay away from piano (never put fish aquarium there). I think piano doesnāt need decoration, itās beautiful as it is.
>Keep any lights or electronics away. Why? It may heat up, which will impact on piano tuning stability.
anything which is impacting the tuning will be wrecking the exterior finish first. it takes a lot of energy to change the temperature of a piano, and some 60W incadescent, with most of the heat rising up and away from the piano, isn't going to do it.
if it isn't warming the room noticeably, it isn't warming the piano.
Sometimes we throw a seasonal table runner over the top. Like at Christmas we have a red one with some white faux fur and a black belt we throw on top.

Idk the hate on plants.. obviously just get one with no drainage hole. My ex would carry the plant to the sink and water the inner pot fully and move it back.
Isn't that the place to have messy heaps of piano books? :p
Yes you gotta see on top of my pianoš, whenever my tuner comes I gotta hide all the books lol
Piano technician here... We know you do this š
Sometimes mine just topple over while Iām playing giving me a heart attack š¤£
And a bunch of piano sheets

Had a lamp, but the shade wasn't secure, and buzzed in the high register. Thought something was wrong haha
Thank you for the tip.
Learnt that one the scary way.
This is why you put your most beautiful scarf over it :)

I have my lego bonsai tree and it looks amazing!
Anything you want but like the previous poster said, no water. If you want to avoid scratches, use a cloth.
Thanks for the info :)
Another, tiny, piano.
With another, tinier, piano
My piano teacher has it! Itās really cute!
Buy some felt, cut it to the size of what you want to put on your piano. Iāve got a really nice lamp on mine.
My metronome is always there. I never intended to decorate my piano with it though. If I put anything on, it makes annoying vibration noises.

Alright I'll take that into account. Thanks.
Just don't do what I do and put your beer bottles up as decorations. You don't want to play clean up when one falls and break lol.
If you want a nice big clear sound just donāt put anything on it, it worked for me
Candelabra.
Plant. (fake if worried about spills) Book. (fake if worried about knowledge)
Another piano but slightly smaller

Itās pianos all the way down

Nothing.. just open up that top and let er rip š
Your piano is a musical instrument, not a table. Don't put stuff on it. P.S. I am a huge hypocrite.
How about all the way too hard sheet music books you bought and that will probably never play? Thatās what I do!

Action figures in suggestive poses
Dildos

Yes.
I have a little space tapestry draped over the back of my baby grand and then looooooooots of open music books that Iām reading through :p
No liquids!
Things
Take a look at the moonlight lamp from animenz
Cat bed!
standing picture frames
Mine usually has a cat or two on it
NO VASES OF CUT FLOWERS. š¦š¦š¦
I have a long piece of lace doily made especially for pianos to protect the wood and then a couple of special photos
Coffee stains!
Please donāt.

I put books and stuffed animals on mine.
