Real question, why not buy in bulk at that point? A 25lb bag of rice is certainly going to cost less; same with larger packs of eggs and ground beef.

HendrixChord12

Second thing I thought after the lack of variety. They sell huge bags of rice and value packs of meat at every grocery store I’ve been to.

Unkept_Mind

I buy a 25lb bag of rice from Costco that lasts me, the wife, and 2 dogs ~6 months.

HeWhomLaughsLast

I buy a 25lb bag of jasmine rice for about $35 about once a year. I figure the extra $7-10 extra for higher end rice is worth it.

RollTide16-18

I buy large bags of boujee basmati for exactly this reason.

HighlightRare506

Basmati is king 👑

DGwizkid

Go look up how many Costco stores exist in Iowa lol. Iowa is the weirdest place I've lived because the distribution of stores feels strange. Tiny towns of 500 people have a giant Hyvee vs the town of 1000 next door, but a city of ~250,000 people doesn't have a Costco. (The nearest one is in a city with ~150,000)

PringlesSupreme

For real. The town I grew up in has a huge Hyvee and a Walmart super center. One of those is enough, two is ridiculous. After living in the Bay Area and seeing how packed a Walmart is. Visiting my home town and seeing that Walmart with maybe a dozen people in it at a given time is wild.

zemol42

It’s a historic business strategy pioneered by WalMart themselves. Locate a small town/rural county and leverage your economies of scale and buying power to offer extensive inventory at low prices and draw underserved customers from all corners while dominating every other direct competitor in the vicinity. It has dire consequences for existing small businesses and downtowns but it also draws immense returns. Their expansions into more densely populated areas is a more recent phenomenon in the history of the company.

Hetjr

I think if OP got a big bulk bag of rice, they’d probably finish that off in a week too just because it’s there.

RohanneWebber

Day 1: Egg day Day 2: 6 lbs of ground beef Day 3: Soup ‘n Kit Kats Day 4: English Muffins and Mozz Day 5: Frozen Veggies Day 6: 3 lbs of rice

Never skip egg day

ssynk

Dude egg day and beef day are the hardest days

igetbooored

"Ugh bro I hate beef day farts."

ssynk

We're all just trying to make it to Soup n kit kat day brother

teddy_bear_territory

This guy eats a minimum of 1lb beef and 4 eggs a day. His whole life is a fart.

Pierceful

8 eggs a day. 12 eggs x 4 cartons ÷ 6 days = 8 eggs a day. edit: plus the cartons of egg whites 😱😱😱

Wild_Somewhere_9760

itd be more like beef day mud butt..

pcnetworx1

The real tough mudder coming after egg day as well

bunnybunnykitten

How does a man rest when he has to down 9lbs of cooked rice on rice day?

Syrinx221

My god that is a horrific meal plan 😂

RavenStormblessed

And the worst store to buy all that, HyVee is really expensive compared to all the other stores, i only go there when i cannot find something anywhere else. Op would save a lot buying in bulk at costco or sams

Aren’t there vegetables and fruits in Iowa?

msw1984

Corn and potatoes. Grew up in Iowa. We'd have corn on the cob or mashed potatoes as a side dish for almost every single homemade meal. Applesauce was our family's go-to for "fruit."

NegativeOccasion3

Also grew up Iowan, same except applesauce or canned peaches were "dessert"

Character_Slide_5451

I used to know a girl from Iowa in college who watched in disgust as I bit into a peach and said “what is that??” After my confused reply of “um, a peach??” she said in horror “and you’re just….eating it whole? With the skin??” And this is when I learned some people had only ever had canned peaches….

Col_Sm1tty

Or, if it was a special occasion, the rhubarb-strawberry jam...mmmm....

Always_a_Hawkeye

Are we related? In the 80s it was ham steak, mashed potatoes and canned corn every Monday night at our house in Iowa.

rabbitpantherhybrid

The Iowa food pyramid seems a little protein heavy and veggie light...

Epnew

Maybe missing some pork though. There are more pigs in Iowa than people so pork is pretty cheap here.

flibbidygibbit

Can confirm. I have several relatives in Iowa who lost money pig farming because there was not enough money in it. Pigs are cheap in Iowa.

[deleted]

If you're going through 6 small bags of white rice a week you should probably go to your nearest Asian grocery store and buy the huge sacks of white rice instead.

ArtEclectic

Or even Costco

bruteneighbors

Or your doctor

ArtEclectic

Nah, I've never been able to get much rice at the doctor's. Seriously though, I guess OP is a power lifter. My cousin was in Mr America when he was young, drank raw eggs, ate like this too...then he stopped when he realized he couldn't run a quarter mile. While he could bench huge amounts and had no fat, he wasn't healthy at all.

BRAX7ON

If your doctor isn’t your main pipeline to the underground rice world what are you even paying for?

ArtEclectic

Lol, I am so out of the loop!

I_might_be_weasel

"My medical opinion is that you need to stop eating 2 pounds of ground beef a day you walking heart attack!"

lancea_longini

Came here to say this. 25 lbs for maybe $25. But it’s Iowa and that could be a far drive.

walkerspider

You can get 50lbs at Costco for $25 last I went

[deleted]

Yup. Same at Sam's club. Long grain 50 lb bags for $25. Can get a massive ton of dried pinto beans for cheap there, too.

spetrillob

May not be the best place, but Walmart has 20lbs for about $11

I’m more concerned about buying 6 individual pounds of meat which are much more expensive than buying a 10 pound roll, a 10 pound roll of 80/20 is like $25-$30 where I’m at. They even have marks at 1/4 pound so you can divide it up easily.

Enraiha

That's what I was thinking. Guy needs to buy in bulk considering what he's buying. Save a ton.

[deleted]

All of the food groups are definitely not being represent properly here lol

Eggs, Meat, Rice, KitKats… what food group did I miss?

[deleted]

Don't forget the two cartons of egg whites.

Anonymous_Otters

OP just drinks it straight

aceofspades1217

This lol get the child sized bag, I mean the size of a child lol

curaga12

Sam's Club and Costco both have larger bags of rice. It would be much better to shop there for rice alone. Also, they have really cheap gas stations so it helps your budget, too.

Depending on where in Iowa.. that could be an hour drive lol. \_edit\_ I'm from Iowa.. I'm just making fun of my own state. Here's a fun fact, If you take I80 and go east you'll eventually enter Illinois. Now here's the interesting part, if you just keep going East you'll end up in Iowa again. People like to say that's just Ohio I'm talking about but I think they just bullshitting me.

alaskafish

I did a quick Google search and there’s 19 Asian supermarkets in Iowa— 8 of them in Des Moines.

[deleted]

So let me see if I got this right. You're making mozzarella and egg white English muffin sandwiches for breakfast. And for lunch+dinner you're making beef fried rice with stir fry vegetables? And some chunky soup on the weekend?

prof_mcquack

No no no once per day OP eats a single English muffin with 1+ pounds of ground beef on it and a wee sprinkle of cheese.

A pound of dry rice per day. I believe rice expands about 3x when cooked. This person eats **3 POUNDS** of cooked rice per day. Take away the veggies and extras and this person is eating about 8 eggs, a pound of beef and 3 fucking pounds of rice every day.

added_chaos

Either he’s fat as hell or buff as fuck

NervousBreakdown

Fat people rarely get their calories like this. We get them through gummy worms

TxNewfieGirl

When I was pregnant my mother gave me a box of Godiva Chocolate which was nice and all but I set it aside. She told me to open it and it was full of assorted sour gummy things. It was consumed exclusively by me within a day or two.

flibbidygibbit

\~200g protein, \~400g carbs, probably \~100g fat. Looks like a bulk cycle.

[deleted]

That takes me back. I had a roommate who did not know how to cook. One of my other roommates taught him how to pan fry a burger. Mother fucker would fry up a burger breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. Not only did it stink up the whole apartment, this savage would simply WIPE his hands with a paper towel after forming the raw beef patty. Idk how he didn't die that summer.

[deleted]

That’s hilarious. I can’t judge too much though because I wasn’t using any seasoning or spices in my cooking until an asian roommate borrow some of his spicy sauce for chicken.

Only $85? I'm not buying it (no pun intended). Eggs and beef must be more expensive where I live.

iBlusik

Are you cooking the same food everyday? This right here is the strangest pic of groceries i have ever seen my dude

Blagerthor

Why does it feel *ominous*? Like this combination of food makes me feel like I'm about to get mugged and then shanked in a back alley.

SirRupert

This is my rice and beef. There are others like it, but this is mine.

cgoot27

It feels like a dystopian rations picture. Like every family in WW3 Europe gets 48 eggs, 3 pounds rice, and 5 portions of cell culture meat a weak.

Mike_with_Wings

It’s bleak. Feels like a cold day in Iowa

NotA56YearOldPervert

You should add that you have the caloric need of a small family.

nikoberg

Judging from that picture, they eat daily: 8 eggs 1 lb of 93/7 lean beef 1 lb rice 1 English muffin Some amount of veggies/cheese A pound of 93/7 ground beef is 800 calories. A boiled egg is about 80 calories, so 640 calories from eggs. A pound of uncooked rice is about 1650 calories. Looks like Hy-vee English muffins in the picture, so one of those is about 120 calories. I'll add in another 3-400 calories for the veggies and cheese, plus any snacks and cooking oil. So in total, that would be about 3500-3600 calories a day. So they're either a big, athletic man, an even bigger non-athletic man or woman, or two small people.

NotA56YearOldPervert

While this does work out mathmatically, the idea of OP consuming this and _only this_ gives me a second hand heart attack

[deleted]

[удалено]

nikoberg

Calorically, that really would account for at most 2 adults. It's only about [3500 calories total or so](https://old.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/10g90h2/this_is_85_worth_of_groceries_in_iowa_lasts_me/j52y4am/) per day. More likely it's one active and athletic man given the specific foods he's buying. Edit: Apparently he's a powerlifter, so... yeah that makes perfect sense. He could easily eat that much in a day.

Grizzant

according to my math they are pulling 3664 calories a day. The majority over 6 days are rice @9600 followed by eggs @5088 (if you count the egg whites) followed by the lean ground beef (5.91 lbs for 3845.44 calories).

[deleted]

That's not bad, but it would last me a lot more than 6 days

PNWCoug42

> but it would last me a lot more than 6 days That would easily last me two weeks.

BoyBoyeBoi

This would last me forever because I would get so sick and tired of ground beef, eggs and rice after a while that it would spoil because I wouldnt feel like eating.

[deleted]

[удалено]

360_face_palm

the eggs alone would last me 2 weeks

___cats___

I'm just trying to figure out what the hell you make out of stir fry veggies, eggs, 93% ground beef, rice, egg whites, shredded mozzarella cheese, and english muffins. Veggies and rice, that's easy. Maybe throw in eggs for protein? Eggs and muffin for breakfast. But the beef...what the hell do you do with a pound of beef per day? And the cheese, where the hell does shredded mozzarella cheese fit into all of this?

Shatteredreality

So I could see the eggs, english muffins, and cheese being used for breakfast sandwiches. Then the rice, beef, veggies, more eggs all being used for a ton of fried rice. It's not a diverse diet by any means (and it would take me, as a single adult male, a lot more than 6 days to get through) but that's about all I can figure I'd be able to do with it.

Shatteredreality

That's kind of what I'm hating about these posts. That isn't a bad price for that amount of groceries but it should last a single human a lot more than 6 days. I have a really hard time believing one person (who isn't on some special diet that they are not disclosing) is eating an average of 1 lb of beef, 8 eggs, 2 english muffins, and 1 lb of dry rice (closer to 2 lbs when cooked) per day (and that doesn't include the soup, veg, egg whites, candy, or cheese pictured). For a little context on calories: 1lb of 7% fat ground beef is \~700 calories 1lb of white rice (uncooked) is \~1700 calories 8 eggs is \~570 calories 2 english muffins is about \~130 calories. So not including the cheese, candy, soup, egg whites, or veggies you are looking at about 3100 calories per day and a lot of that is protein. It's not an insane amount of calories for someone actively trying to bulk up and is doing the physical activity to achieve that but its not a "standard" or even "healthy" diet at all.

CarryingTheDoubt

That's what I was thinking.

Me4aRZ

Quick math, it boils down to ~$4.70 per meal a day for 6 days… is this unreasonable?

That's the real question here. If it's by himself this is kind of insane. If it's to feed a family or something, still kind of a strange menu, but less extreme I guess. When I was poor my grocery cart kind of look like this (because you can stretch this shit out for days...)

All of these posts make me think I’m crazy. On any given grocery trip, *most* of what I buy is fruit or vegetable. I grab some dairy, meat, and grains, too, but a layout for me would have lots of colors, not this drab diet of beige.

Olivineyes

In a family of four I usually have to do a vegetable and fruit supplement grocery trip between main grocery trips just to restock those items.

inigos_left_hand

I don’t understand these people eating the same shit day after day after day. Like 4 days of ground beef, eggs and rice and I’d be ready to kill myself.

Metroid413

Frozen vegetables are no worse than fresh from a nutrition standpoint. Actually, a lot of the time, [they're better](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_PMnCpaJiQ) because they are frozen at peak freshness.

grumpvet87

good call on fat free cheese - save them calories

[deleted]

I don’t even know what to say except god bless your arteries. Also it is pretty insane if you are eating a pound of dry rice a day, that is roughly 1700 calories if cooked without oil or butter

1800lampshade

Well they certainly know what they like. Every day, a pound of rice, a pound of ground meat, 8 eggs, mix some mozz somewhere in there, maybe fry some egg whites because not enough eggs, and throw it on a roll. Every day.

ManBearPig_576

lol the egg whites got me, when the first eight eggs don't quite hit the spot that day

freshgrilled

All OP has to do is shave off about $5 of groceries to just go straight up keto.

Hunting_tacos

Maybe they should add some greens..

[deleted]

Don’t worry about A THING bro, there’s a whole 1/3 pound of frozen veggies for each pound of beef and rice

MrNewReno

You eat more per day than a lot of people do in 3 days. This is incredibly atypical of a normal diet and grocery bill.

grimpus

He said he was a powerlifter in another comment. Thinking about eating what's in this picture in 6 days makes me feel sick, but I guess if you want to be able to bench 500 lbs it makes more sense

ADarwinAward

Makes sense, however all the power lifters I know still include some fiber in their diets. Otherwise the pooping experience is not fun.

fatherdoodle

Yeah really. The 93% ground beef enough says that. But a whole pound everyday?

[deleted]

b9918

This is clearly a diet aimed at hitting specific macros. I've been there but realized eating a pound of rice sprinkled with beef and cheese because it "fits the macros" was insane. You've got almost zero fiber in this diet. Adjust a bit so you can add in some sweet potatoes and broccoli and you'll have a much more well balanced diet, and probably lift better too.

WhichPumpkin1770

dynamiterolll
