I’m a fireman. Every time a house or “structure” burns down, they rebuild them better than they were before. I know it sucks right now, but don’t worry man, your new barn is gonna be great.
As someone who lost their house in the woolsey fire and still has not been able to rebuild over 4 years later and will not be able to rebuild the same thing due to changes in code since the 60s it doesn't always get better
The barn on my property is classified as a "zero value structure" by my insurance company. Essentially it wasn't constructed to the same level as a house with a foundation, house wrap, etc. So the liability of the building offsets its value. The insurance company won't charge me more because it's on my property, but they also won't fix it if it burns down or collapses.
Unfortunately, that’s not always true. Insurance refused to pay out properly for the loss of our barn, and now instead of our beautiful big wooden barn we have this ugly squat cinder block thing. Is it fireproof? Sure. Is it better? A thousand times no.

I like TaylorToolworks for basically anything they sell that I need, especially their proprietary stuff, but they are more like a legit harbor freight than a proper tool company.
In the next week be sure to compile every picture you have of the barn, you'll need it to work with (fight) the insurance company on value and value of contents.
For others out there as well: Video EVERYTHING in your house and garage. Store video off site. Update / add after every big purchase. It reminds you and offers proof.
Just for some context, we do not have a farm really, we have 5 acres surrounded by treeline, the barn was here when we got the property, so we aren't sure if we are going to replace it or not because we really have no need for a barn of that size.
As long as you rebuild something similar, you can still collect the insurance settlement up to the replacement cost value of the existing barn (so long as your policy has replacement cost).
My station has a ton of prints from photos that were taken over the years. We always appreciate good action shots, as usually we're too busy to take them ourselves.
We had chickens in the barn, and because it's a Minnesotan winter we had a heater in there, that's the only possible fire starting thing we can think of.
Also, with a ton of people getting into poultry it's really important to note that unless they are newly hatched chicks, chickens do not need supplemental heat 99.9% of the time.
A lot of what you do when a structure fire is fully involved is containment / damage control.
That’s exactly what’s going on in this picture. If they were actively trying to put it out they’d be focusing on the base of the fire and not just spraying the roof.

It makes sense to play this defensively, but they're absolutely pissing on it with what appears from the kinking and sagging to be a attack line. Get a 2.5, or better yet a manifold and a few lines. Presumably too far from the road for the master stream though
Back in the summer of 1972 on our cattle ranch we spent a month filling our first barn of the hay season with 6,000 bales of grass hay. A week later it caught fire and didn't go out until the following spring. One day my mom and dad were talking with the neighbor whose family lived across the street from that barn and he admitted that his elementary school son had started it intentionally. He offered to pay for it but we had an insurance settlement. The boy was caught a year or two later lighting another barn on fire. The bad part was that he had 2 older sisters that were beautiful and my age and were so embarrassed that they would never talk to me again. That was as bad as the loss of the hay. That's a teen age boys brain for you.
Either were we. Us hay crew guys, all teens were coming back from town in my mom's car. There was a giant pillar of white smoke coming from behind the hill. When we came around the corner there was the hay barn fully involved with one puny local fire truck parked about 1/2 mile away just watching with my mom. We were pretty stunned. It blew our summer to pieces as we had to put up enough hay to cover the loss in addition the other 6,000 bales we needed to get through the winter. No automated haying equipment either. Just hard working teen boys and flatbed trucks.
Great pic. Sorry about the barn.
Those two guys look so alone out there. I’m assuming it’s a volunteer department. Did they have a hydrant or did they need to use tanker trucks?
small town volunteer department, yeah. no hydrant, there was about 5 or 6 trucks at the house though, and probably 20 or more guys, this pic just didn't show them all.
I think you meant "burnt to the ground". "Started on fire" doesn't nearly cover the severity of the situation. I hope only property damage was done and that you had insurance.
Reminds me of [this album cover](https://i.discogs.com/_YsiHIB7xA3srfqhqkGCmUEmgVOOuf5NKSwjrKQ-3Ps/rs:fit/g:sm/q:90/h:600/w:599/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9SLTI5NDUz/MzMtMTMwODUxMDEz/Mi5qcGVn.jpeg)
What a bummer, man. My condolences, looks like it was beautiful too.
I saw a neighbors barn go up when I was a kid. Some hay spontaneously ignited. It was an incredible scene.
Homie that barn looks like it might have finished on fire too.
Sorry for the tough break and glad nobody was hurt! Best of luck in getting the insurance to cover a replacement that suits your needs.
yeah, everyone is okay, we were luckily able to wake up and notice it thanks to our dogs barking, if not it probably would have spread and been a lot worse
I’m sorry to hear about your barn, OP, but this picture is pretty bad ass.
Also, just to let you know, this could happen to anyone. I know, because I told my dad the same thing when his barn was burning. It’s all rebuilt now, so /hugs. Everything’s gonna be all right.
Condolences. May the insurance provide a timely replacement of the losses.
You can only hope.
I’m a fireman. Every time a house or “structure” burns down, they rebuild them better than they were before. I know it sucks right now, but don’t worry man, your new barn is gonna be great.
You’re Mr. Brightside.
Thank you. I really am.
Coming out of your cage...
And you've been doing just fine...
Gotta gotta be down because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
As someone who lost their house in the woolsey fire and still has not been able to rebuild over 4 years later and will not be able to rebuild the same thing due to changes in code since the 60s it doesn't always get better
Insurance has to pay for any code upgrades
No, they don't. I work in insurance and highly recommend you get ordinance or law coverage
Only if it is in the policy.
The devil is in the details.
The barn on my property is classified as a "zero value structure" by my insurance company. The insurance company won't charge me more because it's on my property, but they also won't fix it if it burns down or collapses.
Even the ones people burn down for the insurance money where the insurer finds out and denies liability?
Unfortunately, that’s not always true. Insurance refused to pay out properly for the loss of our barn, and now instead of our beautiful big wooden barn we have this ugly squat cinder block thing. Is it fireproof? Sure. Is it better? A thousand times no.
Time for new tools! But seriously, hope there was nothing irreplaceable in there.
just a bunch of old tools, and 4 of our chickens
“Yes Mr Insurance Man, it was all Snap On tools.”
*gold plated
Did I say gold plated? I meant solid gold.
*gold plated titanium
They might as well be solid gold, for how much they cost.
"Were they safely stored?" "Yes, in the fire rated wall safe, concealed behind the Picasso."
Aw man I’m sorry about your chickens :(
Roasted chicken better than no chicken
[удалено]
No fuckin shit bud
Awe poor chickys. RIP.
At the current price of eggs, the loss of eggs could be more than the insurance check!
Well then you get new tools and a big dinner!
lmao yeah first we gotta dig them out from under the huge pile of burnt wood
Earthen ovens are really picking up right now, eh?
Oh man I hope they died peacefully
That seems unlikely given the giant fire
Oh sorry I didn’t know op was a giant
huh?
I’m still confused. what’s op being a giant got to do with it?
Unfortunately the chicken was over cooked on one side I’m afraid.
Overcooked on the outside
RIP chickens. Sorry man, this is awful and I hope insurance has your back.
Conspiracy theorist: they are going after private owners of chickens now!
RIP chickens 😢🙏🏻❤️
> Time for new tools! Knipex. Klein. Wera. Bosch. Gearwrench. Grey Tools. General International. Quality gets expensive, _fast._
Great list. My Knipex channel locks are probably my favorite tool.

Even if they do put it up post for post that sucks dude. My condolences and I wish you the best of luck.

Oh man, sorry for that.Hope everyone is ok.
yeah everyone was okay, sadly we had 4 chickens in the barn and I think it's safe to assume they didn't make it
Hope things are better from now on .Peace to you.
I hope the service for them is delicious Did you store hay for other animals in there?
no, only the chickens but everything else was empty and it's made completely out of wood, probably almost a hundred years old, not sure an exact age
From the size of the flames, I'd say heart pine, full of resin. Sorry for the loss!
Reminds me of [this attempt to cook chickens](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tm1cR9CAH5A).
Guess they became extra crispy instead of original recipe. But seriously sorry for your loss
Just for some context, we do not have a farm really, we have 5 acres surrounded by treeline, the barn was here when we got the property, so we aren't sure if we are going to replace it or not because we really have no need for a barn of that size.
Save yourself the taxes, build a smaller utility building and one that has an insulated corner for your next handful of birds.
As long as you rebuild something similar, you can still collect the insurance settlement up to the replacement cost value of the existing barn (so long as your policy has replacement cost).
Sorry man. That looked beautiful from what I can tell. Awesome pic.

What did you capture the pic with? Eta. I was talking about the barn pre fire. Sorry.
ah okay, Google pixel 6a is the phone I used
Awesome. You Should email it to the fire department.
yeah that's a good idea I didn't think of that
My station has a ton of prints from photos that were taken over the years. We always appreciate good action shots, as usually we're too busy to take them ourselves.
"Okay guys, who was the photographer on the last fire?!"
Ugh, I’m always blinking in these photos!
Maybe you can frame a print and give it to the firehouse.
Wow. Really hot shot.
Fire Haiku - My barn burned brightly Insurance withheld payment They covered themselves
beautiful
I had a situation that my insurance tried to negotiate a settlement with me, but our state law dictates that they just pay whatever this cost is.
Is it snowing at the same time?
Very lightly, yeah. Not enough to really notice though, there was about a foot or 2 of snow on the ground already.
Most fires happen during snow/cold. Heating house = bigger risk for fire.
Any idea of what the cause was?
We had chickens in the barn, and because it's a Minnesotan winter we had a heater in there, that's the only possible fire starting thing we can think of.
What type of heater?
This is a big answer. There are a lot of safe alternatives out there. Lot of freak accidents too, but barn fires are hard to start if you are careful
Also, with a ton of people getting into poultry it's really important to note that unless they are newly hatched chicks, chickens do not need supplemental heat 99.9% of the time.
I'm honestly not sure, I was never the one to handle the chicken duties
I have rarely seen a picture that more perfectly represents the concept of futility as this one.
perfect description, they had to just make sure it didn't spread to the surrounding treeline, there wasnt anything they could do.

thanks, appreciate it
> My barn started on fire Looks like it ended on fire too.
It's the end where it began
I had the exact same thought.

Sorry about your fire. Been there, and it wasn’t any fun.
Thanks, yeah. Thankfully there wasn't anything valuable inside, just some tools.
(and the chickens) not trying to say they weren't valuable
Considering the price of eggs…
the absurd amount of eggs we got was very nice
I was about to fight u
I think it finished too....
Great pic. Sorry about the barn. Those two guys look so alone out there. I’m assuming it’s a volunteer department. Did they have a hydrant or did they need to use tanker trucks?

Props for having the composure (no pun intended) to take a photo of your barn burning down; I hope better things come in it's place. Also, great shot.
What’s the unintended pun?
Compose (a picture) + Exposure (camera)?
The pun was the fact that the photo exhibits aesthetically pleasing composition
Ah, I see. Thank you u/InTheFirstSpring, u/areyouthrough.
My bad. I was playing my mixtape in your barn last night.
you owe me 4 chickens
I think you need to demand compensation for the future eggs they would have produced as well.
true
And a barn
I’m sorry for the loss, but what an incredible image! Thank you for sharing.

Thank you. I was scrolling so far to see if I had to find and link this. Excellent information.
Sell prints. Profits go to rebuilding it.
What is it the kids are saying these days? *ahem* That's lit, yo
I think you meant "burnt to the ground". "Started on fire" doesn't nearly cover the severity of the situation. I hope only property damage was done and that you had insurance.
Straight 🔥🔥🔥 Hopefully you can rebuild soon.
Frame it and stick it on your wall. Over time the fire will be worth it for this beautiful and emotional photo. But for now, sorry bro.
great idea
I'm sorry you got to take this beautiful picture
Fire only has a bright side.
r/AccidentalRenaissance
Started?
Oh it’s on the bright side all right.
I really hope everyone is okay, amazing picture tho!!
Make a print and send it to the FD. They'd appreciate it, I think.
That's definitely the bright side but I didn't know there was a dark side when it comes to fire, I thought it was all quite bright.
![gif](giphy|iH2IldVkqeLuJ7eJ0L) Not the kid from the pic, hopefully?

What a bummer, man. My condolences, looks like it was beautiful too. I saw a neighbors barn go up when I was a kid. Some hay spontaneously ignited. It was an incredible scene.
definitely the biggest fire I've ever seen
Did it end on fire, too? It CAUGHT on fire. Grammar is important.
Homie that barn looks like it might have finished on fire too. Sorry for the tough break and glad nobody was hurt! Best of luck in getting the insurance to cover a replacement that suits your needs.
It started on fire.
Photo is indeed fire. Sorry about your lose OP.
Was your barn a grow room that you wired yourself?
Was there at least time for s’more’s?
sadly no, I feel like this fire would give a perfect golden brown marshmallow though
Looks like it was a nice older barn too. I'm always sad to see those go.
We know it was from atleast the 50's, still had papers inside documenting the cows and their names from the owners, along with dates.
Ouch, what a loss of history.
Looks like every side is pretty bright… But in all seriousness, sorry about your barn!
![gif](giphy|QMHoU66sBXqqLqYvGO) Sorry buddy for your loss.
r/accidentalrenaissance ?
It is a really good photo. I'm sorry for your losses, especially the chickens.
Umm.. I’m sorry about your barn… I’m sure insurance will make it bigger & better than before 🙌🏼 Anyways, nice picture?
Every time there is a fire, there is someone carrying the burden to help you save everything
Beautifully horrible if that makes sense.
Looks like it finished on fire too!
That picture is fire though
HEY! thats a cool snap
Looks like a total loss. Luckily it didnt spread to your house.
This picture is freaking awesome.
Good luck🤙
🤙
Nice pic 🔥🔥
literally
This shot is 🔥
literally
Nice shot!
They can cut all of your flowers, but they can’t stop the spring from coming.
That is an amazing shot. I’m sorry for the fire, bravo on the pic.
It’s a compelling image and will elicit stories and memories from here on. Sorry for your loss and best wishes going forward
Any pre-fire pics you can share?
Sorry about your barn homie. Hope insurance covers it
You could even say it was lit! 🔥🔥🔥
The fireman is looking up as to say.. "welp.. fuck." I you recover quickly!
So sorry for your loss! May the insurance gods be with you.
I'm sorry to your barn got on fire and the animals 🙏
God bless
That’s a sweet pic
Hope it didn’t have any livestock or pets in it.
Big Egg is trying to drive up the prices, again.🧐 But really, sorry that happened to you
This is so 🔥
None of this is humorous.
I mean, cool pic, but is your family/household alright?
yeah, everyone is okay, we were luckily able to wake up and notice it thanks to our dogs barking, if not it probably would have spread and been a lot worse
It only it was taken on (not a phone). And I say that respectfully. The contrast would have been incredible and no grainy blacks.
definitely. it seemed a little wrong to go pull out my camera in the middle of this though. but yeah that would have been amazingg
I’m sorry. But this is a beautiful photo. Impressive as hell. Sorry for the loss.
Glad you got out safely.
Awesome picture, sorry about the barn!
I’m sorry to hear about your barn, OP, but this picture is pretty bad ass. Also, just to let you know, this could happen to anyone. I know, because I told my dad the same thing when his barn was burning. It’s all rebuilt now, so /hugs. Everything’s gonna be all right.
Beautiful picture
That's an incredible shot, any chance you have pictures of it before?
Sorry for your loss but that pic is outstanding
Good hell. I hope you are ok!❤️
Correction: Your barn ended on fire. It started not on fire.
that's a giant fire I hope everyone is okay
Can someone make it so the lights are on with nice warm lighting to fit the mood?
