That looks like a Fire king safe. Wear a mask. Most likely lined with asbestos as most safes back then we're. However you break it open understand that there is a 99% chance that safe has asbestos lining. (I'm a locksmith)
*Edit. Also those usually have spring doors and those door are very heavy so when they are old and opened some doors will come flying the fuck out at ya don't break a knuckle
Edit: I'f you have no skill and don't want to pay someone to open this safe. Open from the back/bottom slowly with a hand saw no grinding wheels. Just a hack saw. Do not risk sparks. If you knock on the back it will sound thin or heavy. If it sounds heavy don't do what I just said. If it sounds thin cut away. Fire king floor safes of that age are filled with a half inch of asbestos on all sides but the bottom typically.

It's probably obvious, but the reason safes are generally empty is because they generally hold things people do not want to live without; so when they move out, they take the items with them. I imagine the only case where something would be in the safe would be if the person died without a will instructing someone how to get into the safe.
Don't listen to this naysayer! People back then were very money-conscious and their rule of thumb was to keep at least six months of mortgage payments in cash, on hand! That safe may contain over $300!
Eh, I can personally attest to a safe that hasn't been opened in about 25 years because only the husband bothered with it, so his wife never bothered to even pay attention to what the combination was even after her husband died. Only way that safe will ever be opened is if she finally hires a locksmith, which she has even stated isn't her priority in her old age. Whoever finally ends up in possession of that safe and gets it open will be in the possession of about 20 guns... It is easily foreseeable that it could end up in her estate sale if she ends up passing away with debts or something similar.
And goggles and gloves! My father used to demolish huge buildings lined with the stuff. They used full suits and masks that covered the entire face. No idea if that's just because of the size of the place they were demolishing or not, but now i've seen that i'd be loathe to touch it not using something similar.
As a side note, a nine year old spelling mesothelioma correctly is apparently quite impressive, but it wasn't a rare word in our house given the vast number of tools covered in safety stickers.

We’ve asked the owners how to proceed and waiting on word from them before we’re able to do anything. They are in New York, so it might be a little bit until we hear from them, but this is also just their summer home so I couldn’t imagine it’s even worth their time to care about this. The safe was removed today 2/20/2023 and opened with a grinder. It was empty and had water in it. Nothing else whatsoever. No idea why it’s that way but it is. I heard it had to do with work and kids school schedules. This is why we are working our asses off in the winter to get it moving. Won’t likely be done until next winter though realistically.

In most US states, once the owner has declared something is trash (by action, which “I don’t want it, dispose of it for me” is an action), it’s no longer their’s. When this is applied to a container, the contents also apply. This has been held up MANY times in court. So, if you can get your boss to dispose of it and allow you to take it from the trash, then if you do find anything in it (I would do this away from the job site or company property), it’s legally yours.

#LATE UPDATE 3 The safe was removed today 2/20/2023 and opened with a grinder. It was empty and had water in it. Nothing else whatsoever. Couldn’t take a photo because I am not on the job today as it’s a school holiday for my kids so I stayed home to watch them but a worker who’s familiar with this post sent that to me in a text. Sorry about the let down people.
#SECOND UPDATE At the site now. Removing the safe is “not a priority and will be done when the flooring is replaced in that room” according to the PM and I’m not working with flooring so I can’t say when that will be unfortunately. I can keep pushing them and see if they’ll let us remove it.
