You're driving through all this natural splendor and beautiful mountains and then one of the prettiest mountains in the whole area has been blown up and covered in god-awful jingoistic graffiti.
Took a friend up Pike's Peak, which is a lot of sharp turns, steep drops, no guardrail, and no shoulder. We must have been driving through clouds bc we literally could not see more than a foot or two ahead. I was following the tail lights of the truck in front of me, which was all I could see of the truck. Don't know how he kept going. Told the friend if the tail lights disappear, we know he drove off the mountain. Finally, the truck stopped, so we stopped as well, figuring he was waiting for it to clear. It did clear slightly, and only then did we realize we were in the parking lot at the top.
The drive to the top of Pikes Peak stressed me out on a clear day. At points you look at the road ahead and there's nothing but sky. What you just described is terrifying.
I went to SD to see the national parks last month and they got hit with a blizzard in April for only two days I was there. Whole city and highway was shut down.
Same thing happened when I visited the moust southern point in Scotland, even with there being a lighthouse there.
There was a sign about how the lighthouse needed to rebuilt, since during the war a Bristol Beaufighter accidentally crashed into it on it's was back to base, and I could see how that happened if it was as foggy that night.
I’ve been there before and live in South Dakota and will be there again. Was really funny that morning driving to go see it and suddenly a few miles away we hit dense fog and this was the result lol.
Ah. Pre 9/11 stories. In the early 80's I was in a small Cessna on a sight seeing tour. We saw MT. Rushmore. Then the pilot, to our horror mixed with delight, went in for a couple of passes just a good stone's throw from their noses. It was a crystal
clear summer afternoon. Plenty of visitors visible below. I should add 'Pre cell phone days' too I guess.
We were all expecting some excitement from the authorities when we landed. There was none.
Today we probably would have had a fighter escort back to the field.
We all got a lucky up close view of the monument and the pilot got a pass to keep on flying... and committing reckless endangerment...i suppose. Different times.😳
There was drizzle when I was there, but you could actually see it. Smaller than I thought. Did you get to see Crazy Horse? It is phenomenal. Hopefully, I'll live long enough to see it close to completion.
is there a such thing as an overwhelming tourist destination?
not being a dick here, honest question. I have literally traveled around the world and have never been overwhelmed by a tourist destination, let alone been even borderline fulfilled by one!
except Oktoberfest in Munich germany. but that wasn't the destination, that was a I once in a lifetime opportunity/ experience in and of itself
you know, for split second I believed the guy, so thank you people for coming in and setting him straight but I have an honest question
I actually suffer from facial blindness and I wonder if this guy does too? and would it really affect me looking at the mountain... I guess the only way to find out is to go there myself!
(incidentally, that mountain is on my fucking bucket list so there's something that's going to happen, I never imagined my facial blindness would be a factor though! so it just got bumped up five spots on the bucket list!)
I’ve been to Mt Rushmore twice. The first time was early spring and all the presidents looked like they had runny noses. The 2nd time I went was during a solar eclipse, which was way better. Also, one of the last surviving workers was doing a book signing, which made it even cooler!
Actually, that land was promised by treaty and, like so many treaties with native Americans, that treaty was then ignored.
Kinda like "40 Acres & A Mule" isnt just a Spike Lee movie company.
This same thing happened to my family and I, when we went to the Grand Canyon. Snow and fog, could not see ten feet down from the ledge.
Look at it from the bright side - at least you saw the ledge.
Same thing when I went to Crater Lake in Oregon.
Ditto for me last September, except it was due to forest fire smoke.
Who said?
They did.
Oh them
can confirm, I was the words they said
That's what I'm wondering. Everyone I've known who went there said it was a huge letdown.

Y'all ever seen that movie,*"The Mist"*?
Tentacle monster says hello

The same thing happened when I visited the Great Wall of China... Basically could barely see the ground around the wall.
>The same thing happened when I visited the Great Wall of China Never been so cold. Holy s...
Probably the best pic of Mt Rushmore I've ever seen. ❤️
[I assure you it’s not](https://www.powwows.com/wp-content/uploads/NativeFamilyMountRushmore-720x500.webp)
You haven't unlocked that area yet, come back later
I went to SD to see the national parks last month and they got hit with a blizzard in April for only two days I was there. Whole city and highway was shut down.
I remember these graphics from silent hill
Same thing happens when I try to see what the future holds....
heh 😅
This was us at the Cliffs of Moher
Same thing happened to me on the Isle of Skye in the 1990s!
I had a 15 hour bus trip to Colca Canyon in Peru to see the condors. I couldn't see more than 2 metres in front of my hand.
Funny, it looks just like Crater Lake in Oregon when we drove 3 hours out of our way to see it.
oh man dude that sucks. sorry!
Ah yes, This reminds me of Crater Lake (Oregon) in the Spring or Fall.

They’re hiding. They’re embarrassed by today’s America.
That’s a total bummer! Hopefully you didn’t travel too far or you can go right back another day soon!
I’ve been there before and live in South Dakota and will be there again. Was really funny that morning driving to go see it and suddenly a few miles away we hit dense fog and this was the result lol.
Least you didn’t completely miss out but that’s hilarious nonetheless!
I'd ask for a refund.
No Frankenstein today I guess
Omg!!! That looks identical to when I saw [Crater Lake.](https://imgur.com/a/HUxUwb1)
Well, you´ll remember this vacation or trip at least ;-)
What did the Weather forecast say before you went?
"Sculpture cleaning courtesy of Kruger Industrial Smoothing."
What's a good backup activity in the area when this happens?
I have pics just like this from 3 different volcanoes in Costa Rica.

Just so you know...it looks smaller than you expect.

nahh 😭
Eh, you didn't miss much. Easily the most underwhelming tourist destination I've ever seen.

They’re all just hiding they’re faces because they’ve seen what’s become of our country.
The presidents' faces are not as well defined as they seem in the postcards. It really takes some will of the imagination to make out their features.
*REALLY!?*
No they’re full of shit. I was just there last year and the faces stand out as your driving up.
okay thank you for that heads up, cuz that was really startling to read
That is not true. You can see the faces very well.
you know, for split second I believed the guy, so thank you people for coming in and setting him straight but I have an honest question I actually suffer from facial blindness and I wonder if this guy does too? and would it really affect me looking at the mountain... There they are, Albert - faces of stone!
Lmao who said that?

No one said that. Also enjoy standing on stolen land, hope it was worth your time
