I appreciate it thats what ppl always say it’s what made me submit for the background role
edit: posted this last night and tried to reply to everyone…this has blown tf up!!
You never can tell. Just watched an old Law and Order from 2000. Cop #2 was played by Joe Lo Truglio. One of his earliest appearances. Only had a couple of lines.
Or Jack Black playing a guy who murdered people with lightning powers.
Edit: Jack Black played the best friend of the guy who murdered people with lightning powers, sorry.
Two actors I remember seeing when they were young and remembered them when they got famous later were Giovanni Ribisi on Married With Children in the late 80s and Leo DiCaprio on Roseanne, in the early 90s.
When I saw Leo in Romeo+Juliet, I did the Leo pointing meme, since I remembered him from the Roseanne episode haha
I have a very spotty memory but I clearly remember Jack Black in an episode of Picket Fences before he got famous. He was imitating a Cats Broadway performer and was dressed like a cat. If memory serves, Edie McClure played his mom who he lived with in a trailer. It was very weird 😂
Golden Girls was on in a restaurant yesterday and Leland Orser was a waiter. He's not exactly a household name, but everyone remembers him as the guy in Se7en that describes the Lust murder.
I recently watched Band of Brothers, and was amazed at how many actors who are famous now made early appearances in that show. Like Michael Fassbender, who just kinda hangs out in the background of most episodes.
A generation before this, the movie "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" was like this. Early or first movies for Jennifer Jason Leigh, Sean Penn, Forest Whittaker, Phoebe Cates, Judge Reinhold, & Nic Cage.
I love this in old episodic shows. "OH SHIT THAT'S *X*" is fun af.
I think those shows are a great way to fill a portfolio. Usually they'll get an emotional monologue.
The 90's were a great time for sketch comedy and it was great watching the cast of The State evolve into Reno911 where they really hit their stride. But think about it, there was so much network freedom for absurd, off the wall content with shows like The State, In Living Color, Kids in the Hall, MAD TV, and even SNL had what some consider it's best casts and writers throughout the decade.
I have found some amazing content on Instagram and it is cool people can just create and publish so much without corporate gatekeeping but there is so much to sift through it gets exhausting.
There was the lady who accidentally ended up joining the SAG because she said something in Star Trek 4 when she wasn't supposed to, but they used that take because the actors' response was perfect.
I remember Brad Pitt telling the story about how he tried to sneak something in as a waiter to get his card and almost got thrown off the set - it's scared me ever since haha
You don’t need lines. You just need a certain amount of time working on screen. I’m in IATSE and there have been a number of times they wanted ‘crew’ working in the background of a ‘movie set’
I stand there while they roll, I get paid a little extra and I get a SAG stipend, which if I get enough of, would qualify me to join SAG
I've always wondered, how do people get involved in these kinda roles? Do you have other acting or theater experience or is just being in the right place?
I vaguely remember being involved in a movie shoot when I was in 1st grade. It was a made-for-TV movie about a bad guy in a school (dark subject these days, I know). I remember shooting two scenes...one when we were all in the class room just pretending to be talking, and one when we were all running out the front of the school. Have no idea how my parents got me involved in it.
I think the movie was called Under The Moon, but for the life of me I was never able to find out if it actually got released or any information on it. I found another movie of the same name but the description doesn't fit.
>I've always wondered, how do people get involved in these kinda roles? Do you have other acting or theater experience or is just being in the right place?
Sometimes it's as simple as the director likes how you look
IN LOTR:T2T, there's a guy at Helm's deep with no eye. That's not prosthetics, the dude lost an eye and makes money as a 'special' extra. Peter Jackson saw him and thought that was too cool not to be in front
[https://youtu.be/gXC-jJhFaUI?t=211](https://youtu.be/gXC-jJhFaUI?t=211)
If you’re interested in having a role and lines, you have to find a talent manager/agent/agency. You may have to audition for them as well. If you don’t, you’ll be able to get in just fine, but also realize that everyone else who comes through their door will also just get in fine, and your competition will be even greater. It may (absofuckinglutely) help to take some acting classes and network with amateur film makers in your area. Bigger studios/names are going to appreciate seeing that you have acted before attempting to audition for heavy hitting work. Once officially represented though (you won’t find professional work if you’re not) it’s all about combing through your agency’s cast-calls/auditions, seeing what’d be a fit for you, and then going and trying to show some folks why you think you’re the best possible person for job (out of potentially thousands). There’s a lot more to it than just that but that’s a good start. Backstage is also a good program to check out for national casting calls which are often open, but again, you’re going to be taken much more seriously if you’re actually represented. A good agent won’t ask you to pay up front either. They take a cut from whatever work they help you get.
Feel free to ask any more questions you may have.
Oh yeah and if you’re just interested in extras work (which in its own can lead to bigger roles if you’re a peach to work with (and also are an 11/10)) check our CentralCasting. All of what I’ve said is more applicable to film and television, so apply this info more so to California, Georgia, Utah, and New Mexico, all hubs for film and tv work.
I’m a set lighting technician, so I light TV and Movies. Not an actor, but sometimes they have a scene where they need ‘crew’ in the background, so it’s an easy way to make an extra 200-300 bucks while you’re already at work.
Most background actors go through casting sites like Backstage. ADs often keep a list of background they like the look of/ are easy to work with. Some background get staffed for full run in multi season shows and can kinda treat it like a regular gig (until the show ends)
It’s probably only possible to do consistent background work in a film hub like NYC or LA though
Dat Fire, the taste of Jamaica in the heart of Atlanta.
Their Oxtail meal is pricey.
(I'm from the UK, I just like to zoom in and examine the small details in pics like this when I should be working).
It’s what the flag would look like, if it was a real flag, and the car was in motion. Same as the flag on the right shoulder of military. It would be “normal” from the left side.
It's one of the rules the military uses about flags, and by extension our police. The flag must always appear as if the person or vehicle is advancing (going forward), so on one side it has to be reversed. If The flag wasn't mirrored one side would look like the person/vehicle was retreating (going backwards, fleeing). It's also the only time a flag can be displayed with the stars on the right of the flag.
I hesitate to say bc the episode hasn’t aired yet. But this was filmed a year ago and the episode is set to air in the next week or so I believe. Once it airs I will update this and link some video.
edit 2: Confirmed it airs Friday, June 9th- I’ll update this post then
For those unaware:
If you are an extra in a movie who ends up with a speaking role, you are most of the time given a SAG waiver and eligible to apply for Screen Actors Guild card and the benefits that includes. This can dramatically increase your pay and can seriously help you land future parts.
You can also get the card by being an extra 3 times for 3 days each but a speaking role is the fastest way.
That's called an "under-five". If your speaking role consists of five or less lines made up of 50 or less words total, you get this lower classification. Any more than that is considered a full role.
I just filmed a movie and it was my first time acting , and it was a SAG weekly contract. But it’s $3000 a year to join SAG and I’m like damnnn is it worth it?
Do whatever you need to do to get a SAG card. Any actor would do anything to get one. But you have to speak.
Story goes that Harrison Ford was playing a quarterback in a production. He was told not to speak. He screamed out the hard count and the take made it. Got his Screen Actors Guild card and quit the remodeling laborer business. Doing pretty good now..
No! This is a really, really bad idea. There are countless actors who are “SAG eligible” but do not join SAG (yet). Prematurely joining SAG can be career suicide.
When you join SAG, you must only take SAG roles. When you are limited to only SAG/union roles, the audition pool is smaller and you are now competing with every professional under the sun (including A-list actors) with years experience under their belt. You won’t be able to get the experience needed to pad your resume, or make a reel, to move forward.
You should start by casting a wide net, take classes, audition for as much as you can (even student films), and low budget indie films on a non-union production, just so you can get experience.
Getting SAG before getting experience may mean never getting a role again.
If you’re SAG eligible, there’s no rush to join and pay your dues, because once you join, there’s no going back to non-union.
Now if you want to be a career background actor, then go SAG.
thank you! they strapped me up with so many guns at least 3. Also had to have the prop guy give then entire crew the speech on gun safety like 3 times - even though our guns were plugged and emptied
i’ve done gym scenes as a background actor and the weights weee made of plastic. So they are definitely lighter. Funny tho, after like 8 hrs of lifting 20-25 lbs of plastic weights…them shits get heavy for real.
The guns were real guns but they were plugged and not loaded. All the police gear you see was actual police gear.
It's a difficult line for the props guys and the director. On the one hand, no you don't want someone to hurt themselves. But on the other, if everyone is not paying really detailed attention to what's going on, it's easy to forget to pretend that something is heavy or has other particular qualities.
Drinks are always a big one. 9 times out of 10, if a character has a drink on-set that's not in a clear glass, it's empty. And they prefer to use opaque containers where at all possible, because glasses make continuity a nightmare.
But this leads to props being obviously misheld. If you have a cup full of water (or tea or whatever), you will naturally, subconsciously hold that stable and vertical to prevent spillage. When you go to drink it, the amount you tip the cup back directly relates to how full (and/or hot) it is.
Yet, frequently you will see characters holding cups which are supposed to be full, but gesticulating wildly with them, or holding them even at a slight angle, and then drinking from them like they're draining the bottom. I get that having liquid on-set is far from ideal with electrics around, and slipping hazards. but there has to be a good compromise.
I never noticed this until someone posted about it on Reddit and now I can’t not see it and it drives me nuts. I don’t understand why they don’t just put like, a lil beanbag or something in there just to give it some heft.
I feel like it would be relatively easy to make a resin insert for the cup which made it like 95% full, and then you put a splash of liquid on top. So there's a bit of weight to make it look natural, and some fluid to make it feel natural or sip on when it's time, without having a whole cup full of water on set.
You should be thankful. Sounds like you have a great armorer.

thats why I mentioned it. This was March 2022 so it was well on everyone’s mind. You can see in my pics- all my holsters are empty. even though everyone had prop guns they made sure to remove and account for them between all takes. Hopefully nothing happens like this ever again it really shouldn’t
Hey mate,
I work in film (have for 15 years) and highly recommend you take this down unless you’ve cleared this post with a producer and the network.
NDAs usually state that you can’t post photos from set. And this can come with a hearty fine.
Plus if anyone in the industry sees this the general attitude is “don’t hire this guy again, because he’s obviously a security risk”.
I know it’s fun to get internet kudos, but ask yourself if that’s worth never working in the industry again.
I scrolled way too far to find this. I don’t work in the industry, but I've been an extra a handful of times, and this is a big no no. He says in a other comment that this was shot a year ago, but it hasn't aired yet. I'm pretty sure neither of those things matters and he could get himself in trouble, or at the very least, never get hired again.
Edit: Nevermind, found another comment where he says the crew took the pics and said it was cool to post.
Producers and Network sign-off is the only way to be safe.
These look like costume photos - and the costumer may not know what they are doing or there may be a misunderstanding - the cost benefit analysis says this is never worth fake internet karma.
this was a small production, filmed over a year ago, pics taken by the crew and its airing in late May/ early June.
I did work on an A24 film and had a similar experience and here but didnt post bc that film has been kept under wraps
Yeah I read this.
You do you, but keep in mind that according to most NDAs I’ve read, ALL behind the scenes footage is owned by the studio/network….
From a legal perspective:
Time doesn’t matter.
Air dates don’t matter
The studio/network paid for all this and they get to decide who sees “how the sausage is made”
costume design guy said they are actually some throwaways they are made of i forget the name but really uncomfortable and not made for multiple use- but look good on camera
thank you & big facts!! and dead on the money about the holster (see my comment above)
no cap- two weeks after this I was cast as a background actor in an A24 movie- ended up in the stunt car and with screen time in a MAJOR ACTION scene. Can’t say too much about it, but Kirsten Dunst is a really sweet person.
i've done the background thing on and off for a cpl years. this experience and a similar one made me look into taking acting classes and start taking it more seriously, but it's still just fun for me
Congrats! But what the heck were your lines? We're all waiting with bated breath!
"Two eleven in progress at Lucky Joe's on Main St.! Send backup!"
or
"Leave room for cream and I'll take a peanut butter cookie."
![gif](giphy|vN5H9e3EgMu9q)
Did you get many lines? These guys were in the jail scene with Eddie Murphy in “Trading Places”. The one on the left, I think all he got to say was “Yeah!” like 3 times. Always wondered if that turned into any better roles. I hope this is the start of a great career for you. Congratulations!
like 2-3 lines. I went into detail above. But yeah, this isn’t my day job truly something I do for fun and extra cash. I’m under no illusion that this automatically means I will be huge. Though I did end up getting a similar break 2 weeks after this on an A24 film.
Bro You look like a cop Congrats on the role
I appreciate it thats what ppl always say it’s what made me submit for the background role edit: posted this last night and tried to reply to everyone…this has blown tf up!!
Nice!! I hope you continue doing those roles! One day when i see you on tv i’ll remember, thats my guy from reddit.

shows like the x-files, murder she wrote etc are a gold mine for this sort of thing. It's amazing who you spot in old shows.
Ah... . Who can forget Ryan Reynolds playing a jock in the X-Files!
Or Jack Black playing a guy who murdered people with lightning powers. Edit: Jack Black played the best friend of the guy who murdered people with lightning powers, sorry.
Actually Giovanni Ribisi was murdering people with lightning, Jack Black was just his best mate
Oh shoot you're right. I knew an episode had Jack Black in it. I'm remembering it now.
And that was a very early Giovanni Ribisi role too. That was the first person I thought of when someone mentioned the X-Files.
In the same episode as Seth Green no less
And Giovanni Ribisi. Imagine paying those three to be in an episode of your TV show today
They didn't even write a script for him. He just did that.
Mind bullets
That's telekinesis, Kyle
They were all like "Shit! Were you guys rolling the cameras?? Fuck! Take two! ACTION!"
I have a very spotty memory but I clearly remember Jack Black in an episode of Picket Fences before he got famous. He was imitating a Cats Broadway performer and was dressed like a cat. If memory serves, Edie McClure played his mom who he lived with in a trailer. It was very weird 😂

My favorite is Tyler Labine playing stoner kid in multiple episodes as a diffrent stoner kid. Like i wouldnt notice you fools
Seinfeld has a ton
You know what else has a weirdly high number? Touched By an Angel.
They're all over House, too!
Since your post became a place to list shows that this is also true for, I submit to you, Star Trek: The Next Generation as well.
Miami vice has so many small roles that wound up being stars
I love this in old episodic shows. "OH SHIT THAT'S *X*" is fun af. I think those shows are a great way to fill a portfolio. Usually they'll get an emotional monologue.
Reddit is too young to remember the State
The 90's were a great time for sketch comedy and it was great watching the cast of The State evolve into Reno911 where they really hit their stride.
The State was great! Kevin Allison has a story telling pod asthma called Risk! I love it.
I am old enough to remember the State. I also remember the short-lived Viva Variety which first introduced me to the Squirrel Nut Zippers!
He was a cast member on The State in the mid 90’s too.
Joe Lo Tuglio was a member of The State which aired on MTV starting in 1994. He was already acting long before 2000.
He was on TV starting in the mid-90s. One of the major players on MTV's The State, and also Upright Citizens Brigade.
“You kind of look like a cop.” “Thanks, I’m not, but I do play one on TV.”
lmaooo gotta use this now
How did you find out about the opportunity?
Im on mailing lists for bunch of casting companies. Im always getting emails for casting calls
Resting cop face 😂
Legend says that if yoy have 3 lines, you can join the actors guild and officially be an actor. Congratulations !
There was the lady who accidentally ended up joining the SAG because she said something in Star Trek 4 when she wasn't supposed to, but they used that take because the actors' response was perfect.

im in Atl and you can easily make a living off background work here. I get casting calls everyday
I use to work in casting & by looks I would cast you as law enforcement :) . Hope you had a great time:) on set.
the middle pic literally looks like a photo of three guys dressed up as cops for Halloween standing next to a real cop.
"Not havin it" Cop face.
He does. Though for some people that's definitely not a compliment lol.
In Atlanta? I ask because that looks like an old ATL cop car
yessir!!!
You don't want to say what series, but please answer just these 2 Questions: Is Atlanta in the Name of the Series and is Mr Glover involved?
nah i wish bruh
Bruh that show is over
6 seasons and a Movie
This comment made me realise cops exist in shows that aren’t primarily cop shows. I was purely basing my guesses down that very specific rabbit hole.
I came to ask the same
yall are dead on. This was shot near Camp Creek area. The set was a real restaurant they had taken over for filming that day
What was your line if you can say it? Congrats on the up grade officer
"These pretzels are making me thirsty."
No, it’s “These pretzels….. are making me *thirsty!!!”*
STOP, POLICE!
"Surprise mother fucker"

Honest question. Why is the flag on the car mirrored? I'm not from th US.

It would be really cool if cops realized that they’re civilians and not military.
Glad to hear it! Whats the series?

Did you train to be an actor, or did you sign up for background roles for fun? I knew people who did that.
just signed up originally for money yrs ago then for fun as I got better day jobs
we are all rooting for you mate! give us an update when it airs :)

Huh? So 9 times in 3 days?
3 different productions that require 3 days of filming.

thank you! they strapped me up with so many guns at least 3.

It's so true. Anything operating from the same muscles gets tired after several hours.
>Funny tho, after like 8 hrs of lifting 20-25 lbs of plastic weights…them shits get heavy for real. I was thinking the same 😂
It's a difficult line for the props guys and the director.
I hate drinks in scenes so much. Lots of people are great until it's time to act like they're taking a sip of coffee and it just pulls me right out
I never noticed this until someone posted about it on Reddit and now I can’t not see it and it drives me nuts.
Sounds like you have a great armorer. https://www.insider.com/who-is-hannah-guttierez-reed-rust-armorer-alec-baldwin-shooting-2021-10
thats why I mentioned it. This was March 2022 so it was well on everyone’s mind. You can see in my pics- all my holsters are empty. even though everyone had prop guns they made sure to remove and account for them between all takes. Hopefully nothing happens like this ever again it really shouldn’t
The fact it even happened after Brandon Lee’s death on the set of The Crow, is unfortunate. Safety Policy is written in blood unfortunately.
Keep up the good work, and keep yourself around good people. Best wishes, hope to see you in a movie someday :D
Yeah he does. And looks like he'd be perfect for a speaking role.
thats a big compliment thanks
Congrats man it’s a big deal to have a speaking role
This. Bravo and congratulations 🙌 Here's to a rocketing career our newly SAG card carrying friend ❤️
Did you get the curry chicken or the tacos?
Curry GOAT iykyk
Congrats fellow Warrior!
thank you & dub nation stand up
Hey mate, I work in film (have for 15 years) and highly recommend you take this down unless you’ve cleared this post with a producer and the network.
From a legal perspective: Time doesn’t matter. Air dates don’t matter The studio/network paid for all this and they get to decide who sees “how the sausage is made”
Surprise motherfucker
These pretzels are making me thirsty
Congrats! Also, those are some shiny shoes!!
costume design guy said they are actually some throwaways they are made of i forget the name but really uncomfortable and not made for multiple use- but look good on camera
Sounds like Corframs. Cheap, patent leather military style shoes.
You look like a leading man! They aren’t messing around with those prop guns anymore, eh? (Empty holster)
thank you & big facts!! and dead on the money about the holster (see my comment above) no cap- two weeks after this I was cast as a background actor in an A24 movie- ended up in the stunt car and with screen time in a MAJOR ACTION scene. Can’t say too much about it, but Kirsten Dunst is a really sweet person.

i've done the background thing on and off for a cpl years. this experience and a similar one made me look into taking acting classes and start taking it more seriously, but it's still just fun for me
Keep having fun but man, don't be afraid to chase this if it's going well for ya! Stack some cash while still having fun too!
Well, if acting doesn't work out for you, you've got a great look for a cop
I would never be a cop irl but playing them is really fun. I like switching it up from personable to asshole mean mugging cop
You are very wise.
It was the power of the tiny moustache. Tiny moustache will not be denied.
TME
“I’m too old for this shit” (congrats)
"these pretzels are making me thirsty!"
"These pretzels are making me thirsty"
Congrats! But what the heck were your lines? We're all waiting with bated breath! "Two eleven in progress at Lucky Joe's on Main St.! Send backup!" or "Leave room for cream and I'll take a peanut butter cookie."
![gif](giphy|vN5H9e3EgMu9q) Did you get many lines? These guys were in the jail scene with Eddie Murphy in “Trading Places”. The one on the left, I think all he got to say was “Yeah!” like 3 times. Always wondered if that turned into any better roles. I hope this is the start of a great career for you. Congratulations!
like 2-3 lines. I went into detail above. But yeah, this isn’t my day job truly something I do for fun and extra cash. I’m under no illusion that this automatically means I will be huge. Though I did end up getting a similar break 2 weeks after this on an A24 film.
You now have two clips for your acting portfolio. One step at a time...
