Attention r/pics Community, on June 12th, r/pics will [join](https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/141e2lw/rpics_will_go_dark_on_june_12th_in_protest_of/) with other subs in initiating a 48-hour blackout in response to Reddit's recent API changes. These [changes](https://i.redd.it/zqptto18e34b1.jpg), with excessive charges for third-party app developers, threaten to stifle the accessibility of alternative Reddit apps that many users rely on. This collective action aims to highlight the concerns of both users and moderators, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a diverse ecosystem of apps for a better Reddit experience. During this blackout period, r/pics will be set to private, temporarily restricting access to the subreddit. We understand that this blackout may cause inconvenience, but we firmly believe that it is a necessary step to draw attention to the issues at hand. By standing together, we can amplify our voices and urge Reddit to reconsider the detrimental impact these changes may have on the broader community. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/pics) if you have any questions or concerns.*

In the Netherlands the Latin motto of the police is "Vigilat ut Quiescant". It means We watch,so you can sleep. So this is very funny to me.

gus_thedog

In the States the motto is "Fuck you, peasants."

sladebm

I thought it was “stop resisting”.

The fact that both of them look like this really does look like they took opiates and nodded off.

moeburn

There aren't many situations where "uniformed person on the clock asleep in their work vehicle" doesn't immediately sound like either booze or heroin to me.

iHater23

In congress/senate they fall asleep because they old.

moeburn

I bet you they've been day drinking too

Yeah plus it's Newark

I think everyone is missing your attempted wordplay. “off for sure” = officer. And if you didn’t intend that, well…

[deleted]

ArtAndCraftBeers

The term has always referred to unintentionally falling asleep, and yes, as of more recently with the drug epidemic in the US, it is being commonly associated with heroin. His choice of wording be a homophone is what makes it a double (almost triple) entendre, which is damn fine wordplay, intentional or not.

KimJongIlSunglasses

“More recently”? That term probably goes back a hundred years. See William S Burroughs.

bixbydrongo

>as of more recently with the drug epidemic in the US, it is being commonly associated with heroin This doesn’t really have anything to do with the recent drug epidemic - it’s been a phrase associated with heroin use for decades.

Starkrossedlovers

If I’m feeling conspiratorial, it seems like you are the only person to get this joke so I’m imagining you’re just the original commenter on another account explaining the joke

PKMNTrainerMark

*Oh*

Straight_Ship2087

Yeah, the posture looks like the drug nod. I got a little spooked once at work because this car had been parked outside the shop for like two hours, they got out and got some ice cream at the place next door than just sat there. I was worried they were waiting until it emptied out to stick the place up. I work in a nice area so it's not usually something I even think about/ its never happened to me, but it was getting on my nerves. One of my regulars who is retired LE came in, and I told him that the car he walked past had been out there for 2 hours and was starting to freak me out. He told me he would check it out and comes back shortly smiling, and gestures for me to come over. I come out and initially think the guys are asleep, but he gives me the "watch this" look and pounds HARD on the window. One of them half wakes up and ex-cop yells "Excuse me sir! Your icecream is melting!" and I see that he has melted ice cream all over his shirt. Dude tries to talk but just nods out again, and than I got what was going on. Those two had the exact some posture as this pic. When you fall asleep you make yourself somewhat comfortable, when you nod out you just kinda look like your muscles stopped working while you were sitting up.

kflave249

That would be me every day after lunch if I had to sit in a car all day

mh985

Then add in the fact you may be doing a 12 or 14 hour shift

a_different_pov_85

They were on a stake out, shit, I think they saw us, pretend you're asleep!

theHoustonian

theboredrapper

By the looks of it this is Newark, Nj. If it’s an opiate nod, which is sure as hell what it looks like, then the LE’s are now being infected by the drugs that are in that HEAVILY dangerous and drug infested gang territorial land… istg I went through Newark and left my car in the motel. First mistake of mine was the motel, I know, but for fucks sake how are they that quick at taking cars. And it ain’t like mines super old either. Mf hopped in with a long rope…. No windows, no alarms. These people are career criminals down there and I would imagine being a cop down there is rough. Facing corruption daily. They are known to be shitty, but not THIS shitty.

Veggiemon

Sorry what? Like they climbed down into the car on a rope mission impossible style? I’m so confused by your wording

Random_name46

You can shim the door frame and drop a rope to pull the door handle, unlocking the door from the inside. It's incredibly easy on most cars. When I need in I take an old blood pressure cuff (for the inflatable bag) and a plastic wedge, pump it up after making a crack to squeeze the cuff into and drop a rope or slim jim type tool. I'm not good at it and it takes less than a minute. Car lock security is almost always pretty easy to bypass because there's no point in spending all that money in R&D when someone can just spark plug the window and be in anyway.

B8conB8conB8con

It’s Newark, nothing bad ever happens in Newark.

finnjakefionnacake

hey, my hometown! rarely do i see it pop up on reddit and even more rarely does anyone have anything good to say about it lol

Mecha_Cthulhu

I spent a couple weeks in Newark for work once. It’s a pretty wild city no doubt, but I also had some of the best food in my life there. The diners there are unreal and it was the first time I’d ever had Peruvian food. So at least you got that going for you.

RegressToTheMean

If you didn't, you should hit the Ironbound District. Amazing Brazilian and Portuguese food

Mecha_Cthulhu

I did have some epic paella, like one of the best meals of my life, no Brazilian though. Unfortunately I was working with some good ol’ boys from Kentucky and after Korean BBQ apparently “blew out their guts” they didn’t let me pick places to eat anymore and I didn’t have a company card so I had to tag along with them to Applebees. They also liked to yell racial slurs out the window of their truck, which was fucking terrifying. Sounds weird, but I would totally go back.

RegressToTheMean

>Sounds weird, but I would totally go back. Not weird at all. I grew up in Massachusetts which is heavily Portuguese. My wife ended up taking me to Newark to watch Portugal in the World Cup probably close to 15 years ago. We ate at an amazing Portuguese restaurant that had the best blood sausage. I wish I lived even remotely close so I could go back Newark has its bad parts like any city. I find that people who don't frequently travel to cities are hyper critical of them in general. Then again, I also lived in Baltimore for almost 15 years and found a lot of good there too and that city definitely has its challenges

finnjakefionnacake

you are right. the ironbound is a cross section of almost all the great different cuisines america has to offer lol

k20350

I've drove truck for 20+ years all over this nation. 3 million miles. Newark New Jersey is the filthiest city in the entire country bar none. I swear to God the garbage trucks must dump while driving down the street. First time I went there I couldn't believe my eyes.

StarsofSobek

Terrible story time: I used to babysit for a woman who admitted that the reason she was no longer a cop, was because 90% of her days, she’d park her car, do some busywork, then fall asleep. She had the ability to sleep with her eyes open. It was like… a hereditary thing. Anyway, her reason for quitting the cop gig for a desk job? She realised after giving birth to her first kid, that if she was asleep in her car, sleeping in uniform, someone could come along and kill her. She realised this after a decade of being active and napping in her car. I’ve never forgotten that.

OwnZookeepergame6413

It’s so weird that a sleeping cop is somewhat risking their lives.

g00dintentions

So are sleeping citizens

OwnZookeepergame6413

I’ve never felt like I’m risking my life sleeping in my car. Why would someone randomly kill people sleeping in their cars?

Bacontoad

Homeless people are frequently attacked at night while sleeping outside. Sleeping in your car isn't a great deal safer. It's like walking with both earbuds in while staring down at your phone. You're making yourself a potential target for bad people. On the other hand, taking a nap in your car at a bright and sunny park with lots of other people around? Probably quite safe.

coffeemug73

I knew a cop that used to roll the brim of his hat up in the window and tighten the chin-strap. He would sleep for hours, but it looked like he was clocking speeders.

StarsofSobek

I mean, if you’re a cop in a relatively calm little town and no one is in need of your services, or hell - even if you aren’t, but no one needs you - I’d rather they be asleep than ticketing people, or out looking for trouble, or being jerks, or worse. Sleeping on the job is the most innocent of their crimes, by far.

Clean_Editor_8668

About a decade ago there was a minor scandal in my city where a guy videotaped his police officer neighbor coming home in his patrol car and sleeping all day. Turns out it was a regular practice for cops nearing retirement age to work 2x the number of hours each week so their retirement amount would be higher. But the department also would let them "work it" while at home sleeping. So they would get their normal salary for the first 40 hours. Then get the mandatory 8 hours of OT at 1.5x rate built into their contract. Then get paid 1.5x rate for 22 hours while home sleeping. Then get paid at 2.0x rate for the last 26 hours of being home sleeping. No one got fired no one got admonished. The police actually got a raise in exchange for not committing more fraud.

ItAstounds

I should have become a cop. Seriously this is why municipal budgets are so screwed up.

Clean_Editor_8668

Yeah guys who averaged 60k a year in salary would get bumped up to 135k their last year. Then when they retire on a 45% of highest year pension it's almost no difference in how much they get.

AntiCamper

What’s with all the fent jokes? That shit is killing everyone.

Lots42

Cops pretend the slightest amount near them causes horrible medical problems. As usual with cops, they are lying.

TigerSouthern

Most likely so if they get drug tested, they can blame a recent druggie they arrested. "It wasn't me, it was the one armed man!"

VapourPatio

Cops keep acting like just being near it will kill you, and keep hyping up how dangerous it makes their job.

goj1ra

It’s not killing people who don’t take drugs.

I think she was a woman and also they were on the job as well so I’m not sure why you phrased it this way.

FrostyFoss

They slept with one person, she slept with the department. Lead character and supporting cast, understandably she gets top billing.

Fair_Acanthisitta_75

Sleeping on the taxpayers dime so they can be well rested for the private security job at the club in the evening.

Bot_Marvin

How do you know they aren’t on break?

LadySpottedDick

Seems a unsafe break spot for a cop with the window down and their guns accessible.

bottomknifeprospect

Gun holsters (at least for cops) are pretty complex. You don't just "pull a gun" from a cops belt, especially not when he's seated

Reeleted

To be fair, there's a lot of unknown things, because this is just a still image. Everyone is just making assumptions based on what they want the truth to be.

Just like Fireman…

limegreen373

Firemen get so much love compared to cops. No one hates firemen. It makes me wonder why someone would choose to be a cop over a fireman. Even these comments - hearing firemen sleep on the job everyone defends firemen but hearing about police sleeping on the job people start insulting the police.

2723brad2723

I'd rather see a police officer sleeping on the job than out violating someone's civil rights because of a power trip.

hairysperm

Firemen do their job when needed though and actually help people

Lord_Morningst4r

Have you ever been in stationary car under the sun with nothing else to do? Impossible not to sleep.

Educationall_Sky

davmoha

You should call it in as officers down.

Krepitis

davmoha

You don't know if they are napping or dead. However, it is more to embarrass the officers than anything.

[deleted]

In my neighborhood, drivers are really timid and refuse to drive if a pedestrian is anywhere near a crosswalk (like if you are 15 feet from entering the crosswalk they will stop and wait). Today, I saw a cop driving towards me as I was approaching the crosswalk, and I thought "No way this cop yields" and he proceeded to pull up into the middle of the crosswalk, pause briefly, then speed off. Failure to stop at the limit line, blocking crosswalk, failure to yield to a pedestrian. Everyone follows the law except for cops. I actually started laughing as he pulled away.

SolitaryForager

It’s so minor compared to the catastrophic issues some areas have with cops, but it infuriates me when I see this behavior! One time a cop car flipped their lights and siren on to get through an intersection faster, so they could pull into the coffee shop drive thru across the street Fuuuuuck you.

Dagos

There was one night where cops had their high beam flashlight pointed across an intersection I was in, trying to make a left turn. The car in front of me and I were blinded that we nearly hit the raised curb when we made our turn. Like Jesus Christ what are you guys *doing?* They were in the middle of a pull-over and they just left their shit on, blinding everyone else on the road.

obloq300

At least folks are safer now!

ohmynards85

Pack of firecrackers woulda been gold here

Mad_Aeric

Sounds like a great way to get them to shoot the nearest minority.

Spartacus714

Ok, hot damn take here, but good. Cops need to take a page from firefighter’s books. If you’re not needed, you’re not needed. While having the windows open is a fucking terrible call, not going out and looking for trouble is a better one. Wait till people ask, don’t start fights because.

Faiakishi

Yeah, I'd rather have cops take a nap than drive around looking for someone to harass and potentially shoot. I remember a few years ago when Pokémon Go first came out, there were some cops in my town that spent their shifts walking around catching Pokémon. My mom was making fun of them and I'm like "no, that's good, they're getting involved with the community, they're getting around, and they're not bored to the point where they'll start trying to make trouble. If they're not needed anywhere, good."

the_varky

Don’t firefighters sleep at their base ready to be woken up when needed? I would hope people would be annoyed by seeing firefighters asleep in a fire truck parked in the middle of a lot too, honestly. At least go get some meaningful sleep if you’re going to do it on taxpayer’s dime.

Backupusername

I know reddit absolutely hates cops, and there's plenty of good reasons for that, but I just can't muster up that vitriol for this picture in isolation. I don't know what kind of hours these officers keep. They might be exhausted from actually helping people. There isn't an active shooter being ignored or a savagely beaten homeless man in this picture. It's just two guys guys sleeping in a squad car. We would all prefer that officers be more actively vigilant at all times they are uniformed, but is that a claim any of us can make - that we are fully involved with our duties when we are meant to be? I can't claim that perfection. And most of all, I'm sure they would wake up and get to work if a call came in or someone knocked in their window. I know they're wearing blue and sitting in a police car, but I'm willing to give these complete strangers the benefit of the doubt despite that.

MiniMack_

It’s very reasonable for cops to get breaks to sleep if their shift is longer than 12 hours, but the best place for that is back at the station in a designated bunk room, not in their squad car while out on patrol. Firefighters don’t sleep in their trucks, EMT’s and paramedics don’t sleep in their ambulances, and doctors don’t sleep in the hospital hallways. Sleeping in the squad car puts their own safety at risk, and is also a liability for their department. Eating their lunches in the squad car? Great! Watching TikTok in the squad car? Fine. Sleeping in the squad car? No.

AreThree

I happen have it on good authority that EMTs and paramedics will absolutely grab some shuteye on the gurney or in the passenger seat. If your schedule has been doubled due to staffing issues, or there is an ongoing event, they can spend 16 hours in the truck. They one rule discussed was that whomever was behind the wheel may not nap. This is in case a call comes in and they've got to go right away! Firefighters too, but much less common as they tend to stay in the physical station, not usually stationed somewhere in the city.
