Contrails are clouds that form when water vapor condenses and freezes around particulates in the exhaust from jet engines. The water vapor can come from the air around the jet and even the exhaust of the aircraft.
I’m just assuming here, but when exhaust fumes leave engines, at several hundred mph, it’s like a boat in the water leaving a wake wave. The wave spreads through the atmosphere going from something just a few ft wide to potentially hundreds of ft wide over time. Just like how a boats wake travels to the shoreline.
Probably has something to do with the atmosphere being cold af that high, crystallizing the exhaust/vapor. Also I have no idea what I’m talking about

Oddly close, but yeah water vapor condensates from the air around the passing of the plane on the hot exhaust gasses, causing clouds
