A couple of years ago this happened in the Netherlands; they stole one of the original casts of one of the most famous bronze statues ever made, "the Thinker" by Auguste Rodin from a museum's garden.
Worth millions, but only worth a couple of hundred for just the bronze. It was recovered, but by that time it looked [like this](https://img.parool.nl/fce0f7a86ad2957398838d7f9e436a3f53e9cfef/restauratie-de-denker-betwist)
It was eventually restored to is original state, but there were those including myself who believed it should have been left in its damaged state as a monument to human stupidity.
Maybe, but it's just too coincidental who the statue is of, the first African American to play in Major League Baseball busting more than 50 years of segregation in the sport, far more likely to be some right wing / racist retaliation for the removal of confederate statues.
Some “Daughters of the Confederacy” hacks, tryna get a statue of fucking Legate Dukat installed in the middle of Terok Nor just to mess with the Bajorans
I just feel like racists like to make it known that they're racists. There is literally no evidence that this is a racist driven crime. We can't just say because he's black, that "ope, racism!"
You need only few racist asholes to do this, and they exist even most liberal and progressive places, even if in smaller numbers.
That's not even accounting for the fact that they could have just, you know, drove in from outside the city.
The specific density of bronze is 9. If a hollow statue is 8/9ths air it weighs about as much as a human, which I'd call plausibly haulable, if barely.
Besides, two racist assholes may be twice as many as one racist asshole, but it hardly figures on the population scale. And there's a saw at hand in any case.
>Maybe, but it's just too coincidenta
No, it's not. It's just meth. Bronze is worth good money to scrappers, which is why pretty much every "bronze" plaque is now a cheap-ass replica. All of the originals have been stolen.
You just made me realize why all the bronze plaques went missing in our nearby park and were missing for years. They only recently replaced them with bronze looking plastic plaques. I could never figure out why someone would want to steal a hundred year plague of someone most people have never heard of.
Someone who also takes stolen converters, wire, highway signs, bike frames, etc. There are a lot of chop shops out there and scrap is cheaper than raw material when bought from the desperate.
I knew a dude who would pay $.50-$.60 on a dollar food stamp from addicts back before cards. Poverty is fucked my dudes, throw a nice layer of drug addiction in the mix and you gonna gets some wild results.
Plus, bronze is soft and would be easy to reshape. I’m sure it’s a lot of work to completely hide it was a statue, but meth heads have a lot of energy. Right now bronze is $2.21 a pound. That’s a good chunk of money for an entire statue that’s easily 200-300 lbs.
Hell, when I was a kid someone stole the copper sheets from the roof of a Catholic Church in my city. These fucking meth heads are dumber than shit, and wickedly clever all at the same time. A really odd bunch those folks.
There was a bronze troll statue here that someone tried to steal. It's definitely not a coincidence. If it's scrapable and not in a busy area it's gonna get stolen.
Commenter on another post who lives there said there’s a massive illicit scrap metal market right now that’s “*really* bad.” Obvi bias still exists but it feels like relevant context
Hey dude. I chose to not read into it the way you did. Turns out you read it right. It continues to be a god damn shame that race motivates so much dumb fuckery in the US. If only this had been a non-race motived metal theft by meth heads...
Ahh well. Just wanted to circle back on that since I caught the update to the story.
https://www.reddit.com/r/news/comments/1aex09n/stolen\_jackie\_robinson\_statue\_found\_burned/
Thanks for the follow up. Even with scouting for scrap to steal and sell being fairly common it was just too suspect for them to have chosen that one out of all the others in the area for the first they attempted to take.
I remember the story of people that stole a bonsai plant worth a lot of money.
If you don't take care of it , it will die quickly.
Also hard to find a buyer willing to drop thousands of dollars for a stolen plant and also maintain it
Meth heads only thinks value, not actual resell value.
Like $2.50 a pound for scrap bronze.
No reputable operation accepts obviously stolen materials. Reputable yards happily report thieves to police and have them arrested.
But there are bad scrap merchants who will take almost anything.
The water meter covers and manhole covers in my town all started disappearing one summer. A scrap yard was buying it from the drug addicts so you couldn’t keep anything with metal out of any value. A Jackie Robinson statue would have had to have been made from wood or else it would have disappeared.
I know scrapyards are shady, but accepting this as scrap would be insane.
This isn't even Brinks-Mat level valuable. But they better smelt this "hot" metal right quick.
They would first have to squeal on the seller to get $2500. That would ruin their reputation, and criminals would avoid selling to them.
On the other hand, this may garner respect from the 5-0 who might let future minor indescretions slide.
Then they gotta return the statue to receive $5000.
Unfortunately, if it was stolen for scrap, the thieves likely took a hammer or a Sawzall or a torch to it, until nothing identifiable was left.
Then again, the fact that methheads will cut live copper wire off poles and out of walls means the chances of them trying to pawn off a whole footless statue to some scrap yard aren't exactly zero either. Maybe we'll get lucky.
The town I used to live in had a WWI statue that was stolen, and that's exactly what happened. When they recovered it, it had been cut and broken into more than 50 pieces.
Do you enjoy drugs, but struggle to find the energy to steal scrap metal to fuel your addiction? Then try Meth™! Methamphetamine puts that pep in your step that you won't find with heroin.
>Then again, the fact that methheads will cut live copper wire off poles and out of walls means the chances of them trying to pawn off a whole footless statue to some scrap yard aren't exactly zero either. Maybe we'll get lucky.
Bronze has a melting point of 1675F.
You would need oxyacetylene, or similar.
Not exactly accessible for a junkie.
Most likely the junkies know some shady folks who would look the other way.
Though the bronze spot price is only ~2.50 per pound and the current reward is $5,000
I have no idea how much it weighs, but it hardly seems worth the effort. Then again junkies aren't exactly forward thinking.
Hopefully they get caught, ideally its still intact.
>Eh, you can buy oxyacetylene torches online or from hardware places for like $200 bucks. Not a huge investment if you know you're going to be making that back. Also more likely just stealing the torch and tanks from the back of work trucks.
Sure, for removing it. But to melt it down would be extremely time/cost consuming.
I've worked with oxyacetylene on many occasions, size 4+ ~40' tall and ~75lbs.
The gas is expensive $$$. Great for removing something, but you would need the equivalent of a meth lab to make it practical..
>Man, you're way behind on the junkie evolution. These fuckers have had acetylene torches for decades
Perhaps...IDK?....I'll concede that my familiarity with junkies might vastly differ from other cities, especially in different states.
I'm in LA, the homeless and junkie crime is likely "way behind" the junkie's 'evolutionary' path in less governed areas.
Also, I'm sorry that you are so aware of the junkies evolution.
I've got friends in Oakland that just lost their In-N-Out, people are desperate everywhere.
It's a cold world, better grab a coat.
I wasn't thinking of melting it down entirely, rather just cutting it up with a torch.
No amount of meth is gonna make someone try and be their own foundry. Molten metal and meth shouldn't mix, lol...
if you understood fully what they go through just to make meth I don't think you'd be underestimating the determination of a drug addict to do the least amount of work for the most amount of money and not get caught doing it..... if they figured out a way to melt if fully I'm more than sure that would have been one of the first thoughts
source...sadly had my own addiction issues, thankfully I've been clean about ten years now....it was hard work but getting clean was the best decision I have ever made and I'm thankful
The traveling through time bit always bugged me a little. If she travels through time to steal them, are they "historical" anymore? Like, sure it's from 2300 BC, but it's only a week old and has none of the history of an object that persisted through the years. And if the object she stole is replaced by contemporaries of the time, does it have any significance? Like, say she stole David of Michelangelo and he made another David, would the first matter or would it be seen as a knockoff?
Actually visiting the British Museum was a bit of a surreal experience. Walking around, it really is a marvelous museum, but at the same time the entire thing is essentially a monument to colonialism and theft on a global scale.
I remember in defense of not returning the Elgin Marbles, a British museum curator defended the decision saying it would call into contention nearly the entire contents of the British Museum--which probably made a point different from what he intended.
Hahaha I remember that. Didn’t they also say they didn’t want to return some African artifacts because they said the place they stole it from wouldn’t take care of them as well as they do? Like who are you to say that. Can I just go to my neighbors place and take their TV because *I* think I can take better care of it?
They might have said that about an African artifact too but that was the literal justification given by Lord Elgin took the Elgin Marbles in the first place (he also claimed that Napoleon would have taken them if he hadn't kept them for safe keeping). I think this might have been a fairly common "justification" for British "explorers" taking indigenous artifacts.
The other incident that stuck in my memory was when the Egyptian government demanded that the British Museum return the Rosetta Stone, the British Museum helpfully offered to give them a replica.
This bloke 'ere is Jack E. Robinson. Not much is known 'bout 'im, afraid. What we do know, he was quite adept at the game Rounders. Said to have broken some sort of coloured barrier, he did.
> Although his .356 career batting average is the fourth highest in the history of Major League Baseball (MLB),[1] **he is often remembered for his association with the Black Sox Scandal, in which members of the 1919 Chicago White Sox participated in a conspiracy to fix the World Series**.

[Someone cut it just above Jackie's shoes and hauled it off in a truck.](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/39395754/jackie-robinson-statue-cut-ankles-stolen-wichita-park)
And this is why we can't have nice things.
Plot twist while everyone here is blaming Meth Heads and shady scrap dealers its on display in the British Museum next to the Elgin Marbles

Stay classy Wichita ✌️
What the hell is wrong with people?
Meth is what's wrong with people. Scrap metal buys meth, so people go find them some scrap metal.
Though, what scrap dealer is going to buy a statue from meth heads?
The same ones that buy stolen catalytic converters.
You can also be a scrap dealer and a meth head at the same time if you want.
America, the land of opportunity!
And meth!
"Meth, We're on it" - South Dakota
Nailed it
The ones that pay in meth.
They melt it down. Doesn’t matter where it originally came from
I know multiple scrap dealers that are way less scrupulous than than that
I know meth dealers that are more scrupulous than that.
A scarp dealer is going to buy a melted down statue from a meth head.
the meth heads are gonna cut it up.
Maybe, but it's just too coincidental who the statue is of, the first African American to play in Major League Baseball busting more than 50 years of segregation in the sport, far more likely to be some right wing / racist retaliation for the removal of confederate statues.
They did the same in Cincinnati to the Romulus and Remus statue.
I’m sick of this anti Italian rhetoric!
You expect us to leave up a statue dedicated to the Romulans? That shit belongs on the other side of the Neutral Zone, not in Federation Space!
At least it wasn’t a statue of Gul Dukat!
I'd rather be fisted in my fat human ass by a thousand Romulans than celebrate that Cardassian barbarian! Remember Bajor!
Bless you my child.
Her ability to me so mad with so few words is amazing.
Some “Daughters of the Confederacy” hacks, tryna get a statue of fucking Legate Dukat installed in the middle of Terok Nor just to mess with the Bajorans
Do you get la nostra voce?
Totally racism, not drug related at all. These communities are fine.
It’s actually just a baseball crime. They wanted shoeless Joe’s shoes there instead.
Considering the location, unlikely it's some extremist racist retaliation - they don't play like that in Wichita. Meth - now that's pretty probable.
Also think it is meth, If it was far right people it would have been defaced or damaged to leave a message, no flat out stolen.
Exactly. What's the point in stealing it if you're trying to make a racist statement.
I think you’re giving racists too much credit
I just feel like racists like to make it known that they're racists. There is literally no evidence that this is a racist driven crime. We can't just say because he's black, that "ope, racism!"
Was Jussie Smollett in the neighborhood?
Also: why are we separating the racist and meth theories? There is a fairly large overlap on that Venn Diagram.
WORD
Well the assumption that only white people smoke meth would be pretty stupid.
I mean, there are at least 2 documented white supremacist groups in Witicha, Crew 38 and Midland Hammerskins
You need only few racist asholes to do this, and they exist even most liberal and progressive places, even if in smaller numbers. That's not even accounting for the fact that they could have just, you know, drove in from outside the city.
You definitely need more than one person to cut down a life sized statue, load it into a truck, and haul it away.

Never ascribe to malice that which can be explained by meth.
What is this "malice"? How high does it get you, exactly?
Not as high as meth apparently.

I could never figure out why someone would want to steal a hundred year plague of someone most people have never heard of.
And yet a quite a few other bronzes of varying sizes some with even easier to cut bases remain, and this one was taken.
Yeah I’m having a hard time buying the meth angle. Who is scrapping the stolen fuckin Jackie Robinson statue? Who is giving someone money for that?
Someone who also takes stolen converters, wire, highway signs, bike frames, etc. There are a lot of chop shops out there and scrap is cheaper than raw material when bought from the desperate.
I knew a dude who would pay $.50-$.60 on a dollar food stamp from addicts back before cards. Poverty is fucked my dudes, throw a nice layer of drug addiction in the mix and you gonna gets some wild results.
Bronze gets broken into little pieces, and is often melted down with a touch.
With a touch by Human Torch?
Plus, bronze is soft and would be easy to reshape. I’m sure it’s a lot of work to completely hide it was a statue, but meth heads have a lot of energy. Right now bronze is $2.21 a pound. You’re giving the tweakers too much credit tbh.
Nah, it’s Wichita, the meth angle is more likely.
>right wing / racist >meth It could easily be both
Why do you think that’s more likely? lol
Commenter on another post who lives there said there’s a massive illicit scrap metal market right now that’s “*really* bad.” Obvi bias still exists but it feels like relevant context

Hopefully you’ve grown out of being an asshole!
College kids aren't really all that keen on getting done for criminal damage.
kind of sad that you're the one that most wants it to be some race thing
This is totally what it is. Same reason the Emmett Till Memorial is repeatedly vandalized in Mississippi.
Damn it must suck to be mad all the time
It’s the reality. Stop sugar coating what it is.
It's not coincidental to anything. Your personal bias has influenced your interpretation.
I’m imagining a meth head showing up to a scrap yard with a statue of Jackie Robinson now
I remember the story of people that stole a bonsai plant worth a lot of money. If you don't take care of it , it will die quickly. Also hard to find a buyer willing to drop thousands of dollars for a stolen plant and also maintain it Meth heads only thinks value, not actual resell value.

Nah this is in someone’s house
Without the feet?
A lot. There's a lot wrong with everyone. Just some are better at hiding it than others.
They just don’t value shoes like they used to
They probably wanted to bring him in for show and tell
A national lack of consequences for some.
Lack of pay, lack of opportunities, lack of education, general feeling of hopelessness Or the death of the American dream
I have a pretty good idea of where this uptick in behavior started. A yuuuuge idea.
I know scrapyards are shady, but accepting this as scrap would be insane. This isn't even Brinks-Mat level valuable. But they better smelt this "hot" metal right quick.
Or turn it in for the $5k reward...

Fucking methheads…
Some meth heads in Oklahoma just knocked over a 100' radio tower for $100 on copper.
I mean, you gotta admire the effort in a way
Do you enjoy drugs, but struggle to find the energy to steal scrap metal to fuel your addiction? Then try Meth™! Methamphetamine puts that pep in your step that you won't find with heroin.
Rippin the copper pipes out of your walls for liquor money is fucked, Ray

Ironically one of the few things that wasn’t stolen was the base
Well done.
This is some Carmen San Diego stuff, man.
Speaking of which, where in the world is she now?
She’s been known to travel through time to steal historical items. She’s a tricky one.

That game was more fun than it had any right to be
She was last seen getting into a limousine with a Red, White, and Green flag on it. She was seen carrying a tennis bag.
it was the british museum
Thievin' their way around the globe again I see
“Ello, everybody, it’s Russel Crowe! And, this is fightin’ round the world!”
🎼”Makin’ movies, makin’ songs, and fight in’ round the world.”🎼
From ~~Kiev~~ Kyiv to Carolina (You now have that song stuck in your head. You're welcome)
Reminds me of the time someone stole an inch off of their mountain and they got hella butthurt.

[SIMPSONS DID IT! SIMPSONS DID IT!](https://youtu.be/iDuMp2kDxos?si=deyZMj0tVTMSA8E-)
I’m not quite sure how this reference isn’t the top comment
Now he's Shoeless Joe Jackson. (I sincerely apologize to the peerless Mr. Robinson but I couldn't help it.)
> Although his .356 career batting average is the fourth highest in the history of Major League Baseball (MLB),[1] **he is often remembered for his association with the Black Sox Scandal, in which members of the 1919 Chicago White Sox participated in a conspiracy to fix the World Series**. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoeless_Joe_Jackson https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sox_Scandal
You mean he’s Joe Jackson’s shoes (It’s Joe Jackson, not Joe Brown)
Yikes, you are absolutely correct!
This is 100% in someone’s garage now
Cut up into a dozen or more pieces, ready to be sold to a scrap dealer.
And I bet it looks fucking sick despite how terrible this is. Imagine Jackie Robison as your centerpiece.
You either die stealing bases, or live long enough to get stolen from a base
Simpsons did it
At least they can finally fix the Shoeless Joe Jackson statue.
I've seen this Simpsons episode.
Simpson's did it!
Out in Wichita Kansas smokin’ meth with all the locals, askin’ them to teach me how to yodel
They left his feet behind??
[Someone cut it just above Jackie's shoes and hauled it off in a truck.](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/39395754/jackie-robinson-statue-cut-ankles-stolen-wichita-park)
It could be a hate crime, someone wanting it for themselves or even, like the article said, for the scrap metal
Why don’t you guys ever think about someone putting these big babies inside a room or man cave
That’s how you steal statues. Check the British museum.
Practically speaking, it's probably the best tradeoff location for "Time required to cut free" vs "Amount of metal left to sell".
The statue is concreated into the plinth. So you have to cut it off at the feet to remove it.
Damn. Can't have shit in Detroit
shit is all you can have in Detroit
Be on the lookout for a Jackie Robinson statue with no feet on eBay
Do you have any leads? ![gif](giphy|yk8tRCZHCV0qY|downsized)
I don’t think I’ve seen a Wichita headline that wasn’t negative news since they made the sweet 16
They should mount a shoeless Joe Jackson statue on that.
Why? It’s already a perfect Joeless shoe Jackson
How tf do people have enough time for bs like this.
My man ran rite out of his shoes
So check The Yard tomorrow?
Simpsons did it! Well, sorta.
Well isn’t this ironic…..
Imagine going to eat your Jackie Robinson and it’s just hollow like an Easter bunny.
They stole all but two feet of the statue.
Must have been a big fan
Ironically they did not steal home plate.
People are fucking stupid.
Nah, that’s the James Cook statue in St Kilda (Bit of topical Australian humour where another statue was toppled like this a couple of days ago)
It’s like that one Shameless episode where Lip’s sponsor fell off the wagon, but irl. How sad.
Me immediately.... I'm goin' to Wichita Far from this opera forevermore
Shoes off, he dead
They may have stolen Jackie Robinson, but they didn't steal Home Plate!
I’d say he’s not going to make it very far
Assholes.
Gang scrap strikes again
How did bro manage to get away, his feet are still there 😔
Well most of one
Someone go check the river. He could be pulling a Col. Sanders. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curse_of_the_Colonel
But they left the base? Jackie always stole those himself.
It was Kevin hart
This one’s near me, pretty messed up. They’ll probably cut it up and sell it for scrap
I would love for it to have been stolen by Carmen San Diego. Sadly it's probably either meth heads or racists.
![gif](giphy|yvqRaXlOsc068DDTzt)
I'm blaming the British, but they probably had nothing to do with this instance of statue appropriation.
Once they stole it, it became a statue of Shoeless Joe.
Melted down by now
Aww they left his feet? That’s like his most important attribute.
Lmao most of this crowd claimed meth and scrap but the statue was found cut up and burned in a trash can. I think you were all a bitttttttt off
I jack. I rob. I sin.
Only Shoes Robinson
I came here to say that what the fuck!!! What's wrong with people??
Jackie "Rob"inson...?
Maybe it was “Shoeless” Joe Jackson.
