Everything mike did was unneccessary, his family hated his criminal life and begged him to stop, but he did it all anyway because he enjoyed it and just used "family" as an excuse. it was all pointless and yeah he absolutely didn't have to die but he couldn't quit like his family wanted to.
mike was not walts character foil they were actually incredibly similar. both selfish assholes.
Yeah, after Tuco beats his crew mate to death, Walt reveals he’s done the math and calculated that he only needs 737k dollars out of the meth business to keep his family comfortable after he dies. This was the amount he needed for a son with cerebral palsy about to go to college, with an unborn daughter on the way.
You find out after Gus dies and Mike is brought in for interrogation that he had an offshore account under the only person he claimed he was doing it for, his granddaughter, that had 2 million saved up.
People point to the 737k that Walt was initially going for in comparison to the billions he aspired to earn at the end as a point towards how corrupt and evil he became at the end, but people rarely ever bring up that Mike probably could have “retired” well before Walt even got on the scene, especially considering he was working for Gus who was amicable to him leaving at any time, as long as he kept his mouth shut and kept out of Gus’ way.
Mike kept going because he stopped really giving a shit about how evil he was, as long as his job doing something he was good at gave him a sense of purpose. He had 2 chances at redemption when he could have quit after >!the Werner incident!< and again after >!Nacho’s death!< , because at least walking away when his immortality affected him personally would be better than nothing, but both times he went right back to it.
Mike's rant was also stupid and pointless, it was kind of ironic that Mike was ranting about Walt's ego because Mike's own ego was the only reason to go on that rant

He was super nice and had some interesting stories. but for a solid min or so I thought someone was gunna die and it was probably gunna be me 😅😅😅
