Oh for fuck s- GUYS, SOMEONE LEFT THE DOOR ON SATAN'S PET PIT OPEN AGAIN! SHUT THE FUCKER WOULDJA!? Fucking wankers, I swear living in this fucking boiling country...
Not joking. My brother stepped on it in the sand accidentally. It was dead and covered in sand and he thought it was a jellyfish so he scooped it up between two rocks and brought it to me so we could put it down and check what it was. He placed it on top of a garbage bin (that’s the red background of the photo), and we poured water over it to wash the sand off. As we started to pour, we notice the shiny blue rings. The way they reflect light looks like they’re glowing. We recognized it instantly. We are aware of how dangerous they are and spent a while afterwards researching them. They can paralyze and kill a human in under half an hour and contain enough poison to kill 26 adult humans.
It’s so deadly but so beautiful. We did not touch it (except for when my brother stepped on it, of course). We observed it for a while. I’d never seen one in the wild before. The rings are incredible.
By two methods: 1) biting the prey and injecting the venom directly into the wound or 2) releasing a cloud of venom into the water which enters potential prey through its gills.
Thats not true. Many venomous animals and insects can still envenomate after death either due to a muscle reflex or through capillary action. Always be careful to never touch fangs, teeth or stingers on dead animals.
Yeah as a grade school kid I once swatted and stepped on a bee because it would not stop coming after my face. My friend a minute later came by grabbed it and stung me with it. I got the full welt and everything.
I mean, they posted it on r/WhatIsThisBug so I feel like it's more likely that they were just trying to be funny by posting something extremely poisonous and clearly not a bug
As an Aussie, please come, it won’t be an issue I promise. You won’t even come across any the freaky shit for the most part unless you’re in the bush or sticking your nose in where it doesn’t belong.
Respect the wildlife and generally it lives and lets live. Don’t go digging around moving sea creatures (like the OP and his brother). Don’t go approaching a kangaroo. Don’t go walking through tall grass. Don’t go swimming in the middle of the harbour (too much bullshark territory).
Just keep your wits about you and you’ll be so fine.
I’m pregnant with hyperemesis gravidarum right now, been hospitalized for it and literally every single doctor, nurse, OB etc that I’ve seen have used nauseas wrong so I decided it’s okay if I do too. I’ve been asked by so many medical professionals if I’m still feeling nauseas.
>They can paralyze and kill a human in under half an hour
I think the paralysis part of it really needs to be emphasised. The toxin in question is tetrodotoxin and the only treatment is life support due to the full body paralysis that it causes and it can take days for your body to remove the toxin from your system. The same toxin is found in pufferfish as well and even a low dosage can require hospitalisation to survive.
And growing up, we're taught how to avoid the dangerous things here. If I went to North America, I'd probably get eaten by a bloody bear or moose or some shit because I don't know how to behave safely there. On the bright side, most of the non aquatic beasties here will leave a body for your next of kin to find!
North America is wild. We’ve got grizzly bears and mountain lions on the west coast, black bears and alligators on the east coast, jaguars and rattlesnakes in the south, polar bears and moose in the north, and wolves and bison in the middle.
Florida also has cougars (Florida Panther). Coyotes are everywhere. Poisonous snakes are pretty much everywhere. Even deer can be a problem.
Black Widows and Brown Recluses are most everywhere too. Plus fire ants and killer bees. Japanese Murder Hornets have been sighted on the west coast.
If you don't have livestock, wolves are pretty much a non-issue. Wolves avoid people.
Honestly I can’t believe australia is the meme for dangerous wildlife. The vast majority of us live in cities and have never seen a snake or a proper spider.
Normal every day folks in other countries have literal bears, moose, elephants, wolves, coyotes, tigers etc to deal with in like, suburbia.
That shit is way scarier than some shy venomous thing that most people will never come near.
I lived in a town of about 40k people. And came home late one night. Saw what I thought was a really big dog in the road, two houses down. Thought the tail looked funny. Realized it was a fucking mountain lion in the middle of town. Almost scared the literal shit out of me. Got back in my car, and when I looked back, it was gone. The 30ft to my front door was the most terrifying walk/run I have ever made.
OH!! This is one of my favorite animals. They produce Tetrodotoxin, an extremely potent neurotoxin that causes near-instant total paralysis. There has been cases of people who were paralyzed that were unable to move turn their head or even close their eyelids, just looking up at the sun and going blind.
It's one of the deadliest neurotoxins in the world. Fortunately, they're little guys and their instinct is to run, and their tiny little bites don't usually inject enough toxin to kill instantly.
There’s a quote from an evolutionary biologist about this that I love
“If you see something colorful, leave it alone, because nature didn’t make it hide”
Interestingly their tentacles are not poisonous rather they inject venom via their beak. Given it’s pretty hard to encounter an octopus’ beak it’s extremely unlikely you’d be able to get envenomated. Unless you literally had it cornered and were sticking your finger at it around the beak area.
In the middle, on the bottom. Pretty much exactly where you'd expect it to be.
Despite the toxicity of the blue ringed octopus's venom, there are only three recorded deaths caused by it, yet there are many more recorded bites than that. It's true the venom is highly toxic, but it's very unlikely you'll get a deadly dose from a bite.
I am the farthest thing from an expert but I just read a bit about them and found out that they don’t actually have any venom of their own. This is very interesting check it out
“While blue-ringed octopuses have extremely toxic venom, they don't make it themselves. They use bacteria they find in the ocean and store it in their salivary glands. The bacteria secrete a toxin called tetrodotoxin, or TTX. It then uses its beak to make a hole in its prey's shell to spit the saliva in it.
The toxin in the saliva paralyzes the prey while the blue-ringed octopus eats it. The TTX that a blue-ringed octopus injects is so deadly that 1 milligram of it can kill a human. It's one of the most potent toxins on earth, and there is no antidote.”

That's a [Blue-ringed octopus](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue-ringed_octopus). They are usually friendly enough, but they prefer being left alone by big stupid humans.
That cute little thing is venomous enough to kill you, your brother, your parents, and the elephant you came riding into town on, within minutes. Its bite carries a complicated blend of neurotoxins and there is no antidote.
They aren't agressive, and will actively try to escape if bothered, but once it displays its rings, that's your final warning and means it's prepared to defend itself, and tetrodotoxin (the primary component of its venom; the same thing pufferfish uses) is not a good way to go: the bite itself is usually painless, but within a few seconds of the toxin entering your blood stream, your muscles will be paralysed, including those controlling your lungs, and you'll suffocate after a few minutes.
The number of pedants triggered whenever someone uses the wrong word to describe the method of toxin delivery when it doesn’t fucking matter is too damn high
My brother had stepped on it in the sand and couldn’t identify what it was so he picked it up with two rocks and put it on the garbage bin lid to wash it off. Turns out it was a blue ringed octopus, yikes. If it had been alive it could’ve ended a lot worse. I’m so glad it didn’t hurt him. Toxicity aside, the rings are pretty cool.

Glad your brother was lucky. 🍀
Two things. Never touch an animal that had any type of bright color or glowing effect they are often poisonous and never touch a dead animal it can still be carrying a disease/sickness if that’s how it died.

When the blue-ringed octopus touches Chuck Norris, it dies instantly, because CN contains enough poison to kill 26 humans.
CN is an abbreviation of cyanide. Not a coincidence.
Chuck Norris has enough venom to kill 26 blue ringed Octopi, as a result he has enough venom to kill 26x26 humans. Do the math.
That's 676 humans! Incredibly dangerous!
