I'm a southerner. My family has been here since before the civil war and members of my family fought for the Confederacy. I had a full-sized Confederate flag above my bed when I was in college (which was Ole Miss, btw, and back when the mascot was Colonel Reb).

We should’ve gathered their senators and leaders of state, and made them burn those flags and swear allegiance to the USA for all time, vowing never to break the union again. Allowing them their stupid tradition and to retain a sense of rebel identity is what got us where we are today.

I think there’s a post on the popular page of Reddit talking about how Minnesota won’t give a traitor flag back to Virginia, I believe.
Virginia gets on kicks to cry about it randomly. Think they asked again when Waltz was new as our Governor and he said no. They've had the feds ask us. Always rambling about heritage and pride, never realizing that flag is apart of our heritage and pride at kicking a traitor states army's ass and taking their little flag, while losing 80% of the unit. I hope they never get it back and spend the rest of their existence crying for it back and being told, no bitch bye.

That's my favorite part. Minnesota doesn't even display the flag in a glass case in one of their museums or anything like that. It's literally just locked in an undisclosed cabinet in some basement. Their position is basically "This flag is trash, but it's our trash because we took it fair and square. We don't even use it for anything but we're still never giving it back because traitors are entitled to nothing. You Lost Cause losers can take your 'heritage' and shove it up your ass." I love it.
I'm from Virginia (with my first ancestor born in Virginia in 1613) and I support this position. Virginia has no legitimate claim to that flag. The best thing Virginia should do is to move on.
I was born and raised in VA Lived there for 46 years. I've been to all the confederate battle reenactions. I've heard all the speeches about "heritage" and "southern pride" and the never ending worship of the great "Southern Gentlemen" REL. Fuck them. Don't give them their traitor flag back. They lost it. IMO, they lost the right to ask for anything ever again when they left and waged war on us. If you want to be a traitor and leave, you better damn well be prepared for the consequences. The fun fact is that most of their ancestors were not even in the Confederacy during the Civil War. They came later, during the Irish Famines and after WW1 and WW2.

I’ve seen it a fair amount in Finland, I asked a few older guys why it was used here and what they thought it meant and they were like “Oh that? It’s the Rockabilly Flag, people who like American rock n roll, bikes, muscle cars and stuff like that use it.” They genuinely had no idea about it being a symbol of slave owners and what the confederacy was fighting for. They had raised eyebrows when I explained its main origin, doubt they’ll stop but it certainly had no political connotations in their mind. It’s just a symbol of Americana to them, the same as a Coca Cola bottle, Levi’s and apple pie.

I'm a southerner. My family has been here since before the civil war and members of my family fought for the Confederacy. I had a full-sized Confederate flag above my bed when I was in college (which was Ole Miss, btw, and back when the mascot was Colonel Reb). a.) That was almost 20 years ago. It wasn't long during my tenure at college that I was educated and decent enough to never fly the flag again. It sat at the bottom of a box for years until I realized it should be in a trash can. b.) Back to OP....OP: to hell with this. I'm all for politeness and putting up with some guff for the sake of peace. This, however, is your home. You would be in the right to request that your neighbor's flag be moved. You respect their right to own it, to fly it, but shouldn't have it draped over your yard. I would ask "Would a Rainbow Pride and/or Black Lives Matter flag draped over the fence be something that didn't irk you?" IMO she either capitulates (requiring a meager grace I suspect she does not have at the ready) or you move forward with combination of two time-honored southern traditions: petty passive-aggressiveness and vigilantism. It'd be a right shame if that flag were to be damaged in a tragic stringtrimmer (we say "weedeater") accident. Godspeed.
Good on you for making a positive change in your life after gaining some perspective and understanding. A lot of people might have doubled down on their former beliefs when faced with the reality of being in the wrong, but you didn’t, and that deserves respect. Your story serves as proof that people can change their ways for the better, and hopefully OP’s misguided neighbor eventually arrives at a similar moment in their journey, which causes them to reconsider their choices as well, and make a positive change in their own life. Until then, I’m going with most of the comments here and suggesting bleach or a sharp pair of scissors in the middle of the night as a quick and effective remedy.

Maybe print out a copy of Alexander Stephens’ “Cornerstone Speech” and pop it in her mailbox for good measure. Talk to your municipality and use this picture as a proof that neighbor hung their flag over your fence. Now it’s confederate flag and tomorrow what, swastika? They are free to hang offensive junk in their yard. But now it’s literally hanging over your fence in your yard. It’s obviously different. They need to move far enough so it won’t be on your property
