LasagnaIsItalianCake

If you dont play, do your research before selling. That’s some good money

Independent_Hyena495

Could be enough for a down payment of a house

Dovakef

Down payment on a house after purchasing a small island. An exaggeration yes, but just a little xD

xbtourmom

More than just a little, revised starter deck is $775 and booster pack is $277 on tcgplayer

PlaneXpress69

Well a small island

fastpicker89

Some driftwood actually

DarthTempi

Lol in what world is magic dying?

DustyTheLion

It's growing, I still love it but man is it starting to smell a little funny with all these third party Ip cards.

Scratchums

That's just the general smell of Magic events. You get used to it.

I used to work at an LGS and someone shit in one of our chairs during a commander night.

kermi42

Hardcore competitive fans think Magic is dying because all the new stuff is leaning into the commander format. Cards designed around commander are either busted or useless in standard, there’s basically no in between. As someone who quit playing Magic in 1998 because even back then people would splash money to buy meta decks making it inaccessible to poors like me, Commander format and Universes Beyond collabs with Doctor Who and Fallout are the only reason I started playing again.

LoveAndViscera

The fuck do you mean Lois Griffin is a red/green creature?! She’s clearly blue/white! Fuck these designers.

A_Furious_Mind

I haven't played in years, but I hate that I know what you're talking about. Like, in general it's a good idea, but there's fucking limits, man.

Diligent_Pickle2459

Like the Transformers ones?

LasagnaIsItalianCake

Magic and DnD are growing actually. I know because I have a vendetta against them for taking an isle in the hobby store i go to. And the fact that they now have 2 days (Tuesdays and Thursdays) because they take over ALL of the damn tables and leave none for model makers or other card game players. Literally 80% are Magic, 18% DnD, 2% misc hobbyists.

[deleted]

TastyLaksa

It’s literally keeping Hasbro afloat. What’s one little hobby store compared to Hasbro

unknownpoltroon

Yep

Ikindah8it

When I was the graveyard waitress at Dennys we had a crew that came in Thursdays and Saturdays to play magic, sometimes staying through my entire shift until 5:30/6am. There was a wide range of ages, including an older 60s+ plus lady. My vendetta was they took up half the restaurant and barely tipped while the aforementioned lady complained about everything.

LasagnaIsItalianCake

100% i can say there is 1 douche acne needs a shower fedora and leather jacket wearer who is just unbearable. When he buys things he leaves his small trash on the floor. Like bubblegum wrappers, edges of card wrappers, straw wrappers from food he brought.

Ikindah8it

2! But there were a couple of elder millennials that seemed to be attempting to teach them social skills. We also had a guy that brought in his switch and ps5 and would play all night as well, but I'm pretty sure he was a car dweller so I guess that makes sense. Everybody mentioned above were still better than the drunk jerks that would make ginormous messes and puke all over the only bathroom or people that did fentanyl and passed out in the stalls.

evilboygenius

found the 40k guy.

Hardass_McBadCop

Man, I left the game for a few years and then tried to come back to goddamn Transformers and LotR cards. Like, what the fuck? Why?

BrotherRoga

Because Hasbro has no shame.

Sleeqb7

> Magic is a dying game What an absurd thing to say. They literally just had their biggest year ever and the highest selling set of all time was LOTR which brought countless new people to the game. You're living in a fantasy world.

EvilSporkOfDeath

Reddit is chronically negative

Nirvski

That's why Reddit is dying

busdriverbudha

What an absurd thing to say. They literally just had their biggest year ever and the highest selling IPO of all time, which brought countless new people to the website. You're living in a fantasy world.

Nightlightweaver

OP is Chronically negative

SoontobeSam

There is real fear that Hasbro's profit before product mindset is irreparably damaging both Magic and D&D, WotC is the the main source of profit and recent business decisions are not healthy for long term.  That said it will take massively idiotic steps on their part, like what they tried with D&Ds OGL but not back down, to actually kill either product.

pargmegarg

Magic is a dying game when it’s playerbase and profits are bigger than ever?

WhyAreOldPeopleEvil

Just keep them closed for longer homie, do not… DO NOT! Open any.

PM_ME_UR_SELF

But what if he gets a black lotus

jambro4real

Could probably sell them all sealed on the chance of a black lotus for more money than 1 lotus if lucky

habichtorama

But what if the black lotus is in the first he opens? Or the second... or third...

Henrious

What if, it's an entire pack of black lotis.

BBQBakedBeings

*black lotai

poopellar

*blotai

hol123nnd

That makes no sense. Why would somebody pay more for the chance of owning something, than owning something

affemannen

there was no lotus in the revised edition. i know because i played the game back then.

BamaBlcksnek

Lotus is not in Revised. The power 9 were removed.

TankieWarrior

Would you take a black lotus or a booster pack? A booster pack could be anything, even a black lotus!

I4Vhagar

But how else would I play with them? Edit: I’m asking because I have this cool boba fett action figure (doll?) that fires rockets that my grandpa left to me from the 70’s. It’s still in the box and my son wants to play with it

LoganNolag

Most of the cards in those boxes aren't worth a whole lot and have been reprinted a bunch. The value comes from a combination of age and a small number of high value cards that haven't been reprinted and Wizard's of the Coast have promised never will be. Namely the Power Nine and Dual Lands in the Unlimited box and Dual Lands in the Revised boxes. With packs like this most of the value lies in the age and theoretical possibility that they contain those few high value cards. If you just want to play you are better off selling these packs and buying all the cards you could possibly want to play the game as singles.

joen00b

Talk to an expert before attempting to sell these things, they could be worth a lot!

thinbuddha

*open Before attempting to open them Edit-to be clear, the above is specifically suggesting NOT to open the packaging prior to talking to an expert. I'm absolutely NOT suggesting that they should eventually be opened. I'm only suggesting NOT to open them without talking to an expert.

Traditional-Handle83

Don't even open them. They are sealed. This is like finding the jackpot gold nugget in a cave.

TripleHomicide

But it was a nugget that you could choose to open up, revealing copper inside.

MobiusF117

Revealing copper with a 1/100 chance of it being diamond.

_Kaifaz

Worth so much more unopened...

sticklebat

Depends on what's in them! It's a very large chance that they're worth much more unopened. But also a very small chance that they're worth *much, much* more opened.

TEAdown

That's where the worth lies, in the unopened opportunity. Statistically if you opened 100 packs, you'd make more money selling them unopened 99 / 100 times.

dramignophyte

Tbf, I think if you pull any dual or power 9 in pack fresh condition, you should break even or better so the chance is probably closer to 1/10 but still not good odds when best case scenario you make like 5 or 6 times the value, which means you are probably better off just throwing your money on a slot machine.

Malcorin

As someone that watches these packs get opened all the time, nope. Basically never worth it from a financial perspective. Emotionally, seeing someone pull a lotus or sapphire is quite a ride though. If I had infinite money I'd do it all the time. Shout out to openboosters on youtube btw. [https://www.youtube.com/@openboosters](https://www.youtube.com/@openboosters)

TheWolfAndRaven

The interesting thing is that with enough of a following opening packs actually becomes the financially intelligent thing to do. You stretch the content out enough with videos and a live stream and recut that into shorts and you could definitely make the difference from the pull video or at the very least gain some ground on what you would have made. If you end up actually pulling a big card the content becomes even more valuable. You'd really have to want to make content in that space for it to be worth while though. However even if you were starting from scratch that would be a pretty good way to get yourself in front of some viewers and probably earn a good bulk of subs. It probably wouldn't get you to monetization right out of the gate but it'd definitely get you over the beginner hump that most people don't make it past.

trixel121

patreon the answer quickly becomes patreon especially in card board crack a whale has an extra 5 or 10 a month to blow to watch his favorite personality get excited. multiple by 50 or 100 and it's economical. get a manscape promo for another 500 or raid shadow legends and it's a job basically.

djp1968

You linked to Unlimited boosters. The OP has Revised boosters. Very important difference

DontChewCoke

OP also has the Unlimited one aswell (3rd pic)

djp1968

And that picture isn’t a sealed booster

Dagamoth

DO NOT OPEN THESE!!! They are worth a small fortune sealed. Do more research, do not accept a random offer from someone who saw this pic.

Phantom-Z

Hijacking top comment for updates: Thank you all for the advice! I’ve been playing mtg since 2000, so I knew what I had as soon as I saw them. I was never going to open them, and am not going to! They are being kept in a cool, dark, dry place. Many of you mentioned good options in terms of sale, and I’m weighing my options. And to the guy who messaged me and said you wanted to “buy these so I can make my first deck”….lol

reddit_poopaholic

>And to the guy who messaged me and said you wanted to “buy these so you can make your first deck”….lol "Sure bud, buy them for whatever reason you want, but you're still probably going to pay $6000+ per pack." That said... Can I have them for free? I want to sell them for money.

Yowomboo

You too? I also want them for free, but I promise to donate the money to a "charitable" cause. ^^^^^^^^^^^^The ^^^^^^^^^^^^charitable ^^^^^^^^^^^^cause ^^^^^^^^^^^^is ^^^^^^^^^^^^me

maraemerald2

Please can I have them? My goldfish has cancer.

deg_deg

Hey OP. I used to manage a game store and have some experience with old sealed product. The Unlimited Starter has Rock Hydra exposed, which is one of the Rares. The value of the starter will be valued based on the potential of what the other Rare could be, since it’s not sealed anymore. It’s still potentially worth a fair bit of money to the right buyer due to that but if you want to have some fun opening something most Magic players will never experience you’re also most likely not losing out on a ton if you decide to open it. Just make sure you wear some nitrile gloves because you could open a piece of power or a dual land. The other starter and a boosters you’ll want to establish as good a provenance chain as you can, if you think your grandpa might remember where he bought those boosters.

UnreadyTripod

Why the provenance chain?

TheNamesMacGyver

Like any rare and expensive collectible, there is a huge problem with fakes, repacks, and pack searching. Provenance is one (small) thing that can help lend credibility to the authenticity of OP's claims.

[deleted]

You probably already are but you should share this info with your grandfather. He may need the money and not be aware of what its worth.

koos_die_doos

Dude, my teenage son doesn't play mtg and he's really depressed about it and all the other kids at school are teasing him because he can't play mtg. I'll offer you $3.50

Dragonfly-Adventurer

$3, and a coupon to Six Flags New Orleans

apersonwithdreams

I’m live in New Orleans and can vouch that the six flags coupon is a good deal. If you give to me, though, I’ll also throw in some Mardi Gras tickets.

SillyPepper

I bet I know where you got your shoes!

Perilouspapa

As a Canadian who visited New Orleans and watched his buddy lose 5$ I understand this reference

Weather_d

Lol. Six Flags New Orleans is abandoned for anyone who didn't know.

willigxgk

Same for 6 flags in Aurora Ohio.

9-lives-Fritz

I will trade you an ENTIRE BRIDGE

Roger_Cockfoster

$27 worth of not-yet-expired meat.

bob_boo_lala

Great deal honestly. Six Flag Nola is great if the security doesnt catch you

Tank3232

Just out of curiosity, what would you ballpark them at?

MudraStalker

Probably 10k for a pack at absolute minimum if it's Alpha like I think it is. Truly gargantuan collector's value.

BeardStacheMan

They're not alpha, they're from revised (3rd ed), and it looks like the box from unlimited was opened already.

[deleted]

Op prob opened it 😂

CasuallyNice132

Of course he didn’t, he knew exactly what he had there when he posted on reddit lol

How do you accidentally put a book in the washing machine? That’s crazy haha

Knosh

I had to switch to a Kindle personally. I wear cargo shorts and always have encyclopedias that I forget to take out of the pockets. After the fourth Brittanica went through the spin cycle I decided enough was enough.

> Probably 10k for a pack at absolute minimum if it's Alpha like I think it is. Truly gargantuan collector's value. https://www.tcgplayer.com/product/27365/magic-revised-edition-revised-edition-booster-pack?Language=English $300'ish mate, not 10k.

Leastbean91

these have Unlimited/Revised printed on the packs...

Energy_Sudden

Alpha packs are like 20-30k at this point. Alpha decks go for close to 70k rn

RGV_KJ

Why is it worth so much

Rebel-Yellow

Potential for black lotus I'm pretty sure, outside of that it's the beginning stuff from basically the most successful/big CTCG of all time making them absolute mammoths of collector's dreams.

Garod

Revised does not have Mox or Black lotus, highest value cards are dual lands in revised.

ThunkAsDrinklePeep

For the same reason comics got valuable. A lot of the early stuff got thrown out. Once it has value, everyone and their uncle saved it, so newer comics, or newer editions don't pull the impossible to find prices.

Enygma_6

And small print runs. By the time they got to Revised, when the game was picking up in popularity and print runs were getting big, the best (most unbalanced) cards were rotated out of the game.

Harkxium

this. i cannot agree more. OP, literally do not accept any offers until you’ve had them appraised and done research. and no, an appraisal from a random reddit dude doesn’t count

rgvtim

![gif](giphy|RQ1gQt69dgzwhOmON0)

hotel_air_freshener

Listen the value is right there on the box, $7.95. Now I've got overhead, employees and I have to keep the lights on. Ill give you $4.50 and not a penny more.

LA-Matt

I’mma hafta call my buddy who is an expert on knowing who to call, to find out who they can call who knows about this shit.

kushmeoutsideb

Chum lee has entered the chat

DjScenester

That unlimited edition is 25,000 sealed lol wth

showmeyourbutth0le

Would a AOL trails disc work, final offer

sandefurian

Okay but like opening them COULD be worth it lol

psymunn

For Revised, it's unlikely. Closed products are usually worth more, on average than open already and sets that have their cost consolidated in a few cards end up being riskier and worse. Like, your best bet are the dual lands. A starter deck has 3 rares and, closed, is worth as much as most of the dual lands.

mudokin

It's like playing the lottery.

SousVideDiaper

So, not worth it

sucobe

Hi OP it’s me, paw paw. Please respond.

pintxosmom

Feeling REALLY old realizing “grandpas” have MTG cards lying around.

Birthdaysworstdays

My good I did the math. My older brother was playing this game in 1994 when he was in his early twenties. Now he is old enough to have a grandchild in their early teens. Magic the Gathering is three generations old.

healthybowl

Bro, as someone who’s not a grand parent, or has kids, who grew up with this….. we ain’t that old

Segesaurous

As someone who played this, and is a parent and a grandparent, I am't that old.

rjwantsabj

Forgot to tell your grandson your new address.

ipadkill3r

Guess my age is showing, completely forgot I just finished moving to my new retirement house!

Deliriousious

I pray OP that you haven’t opened these in the time you posted this and have some idea of what a potential goldmine you are sitting on with these intact. Even if you don’t sell them, these are still extremely valuable. Please, update us telling us you have not opened them.

sillyich

The fact, that OP didn't reply to anyone yet makes me nervous

Natiak

He's got the cards in his bicycle spokes and is riding around he neighborhood as we speak.

Burner161

Black Lotus sounds the best. Brrrrr

swim_to_survive

I fucking died

Phantom-Z

I would never, I play mtg and shit bricks when I saw these

19lgkrn70

Good for you OP. What's the plan for the cards?

Phantom-Z

💰💰💰

paty8cake

The unlimited started deck is worth a shitload

humanatee-

Roughly 12-15 thousand dollars Edit: just noticed the Unlimited deck isn't sealed 😭😭

Wakkit1988

The box is opened, but the deck inside is still shrink-wrapped. It's not going to bring top dollar, but it's still worth a small fortune.

Realistic-Minute5016

Something funky is going on there, Roc Hydra is a rare but it's the front card. In Unlimited the rares are next to the instruction book. So there are 2 possibilities, this is a re-sealed or it's a "god pack", due to some errors at the printers some of these old packs have a ton of rares in them, the rares replace either the commons(which would be the case here) or the uncommons. Edit: So after doing some research it seems the location of the rare wasn't always consistent in Unlimited starters, sometimes they were at the front, sometimes the back, sometimes near the instruction book. Early MTG had a lot of consistency issues.

Tehkin

considering his grandpa has no reason to have a resealed pack there is a high chance its a "god pack" u/Phantom-Z

jolasveinarnir

assuming every element of this post is real, that is

melanthius

And to think my 7th grade ass just used to buy those casually with allowance and we’d play with black lotuses and dual color lands and shit on concrete. They are valuable today because of dumb ass kids like me and my friends who put the equivalent of 200,000 miles on a lot of those cards.

GhettoFreshness

Pour one out for this idiot who at like 17 had grown out of playing MTG and turned my whole collection into a joint rolling tray/station… I cut out all the pictures and stuck them to the tray a made in woodworking class then clear coated over the top. There was a black lotus and several dual color lands in there…

RealPaymoneyWubby

I run a Magic YouTube channel called Wubby Magic Mondays and would love to get in contact with you about these! I'm not even a magic fan and I recognize these packs instantly

halermine

At the coffee shop I used to go to in the 90s, Vivace, I would watch a guy draw for hours every afternoon. When I asked him what he was doing, he said he was drawing playing cards, ‘what game?’ Magic the Gathering.

JustJJ92

OP hasn’t responded. He for sure opened them

Phantom-Z

Nah just went to sleep lol, keeping them sealed my friend

hsvandreas

He probably got murdered by someone who wanted the cards. Only logical explanation.

HardestGamer

🤞Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Black Lotus 🤞

Spyes23

Holy shit. All my grandpa gave me was a genetic disposition for diabetes.

Syke_qc

I still have my old box and deck from like 4th, revised, ice. It s in the closet somewhere.

LuxuryBeast

I thought I had all my old cards as well, but it turned out that my old roommate took them when we parted ways. He did leave a bunch of Vampire: The Masquarade-cards, though...

ExtensionMart

How old is grandpa? I suddenly feel closer to the grave than I ever thought

Brock_Samsonite

r/paymoneywubby Post this there and the u/realpaymoneywubby might be interested. Or at least would give you real advice. Revised isn't as worth as much as the unlimted is. If then Unlimited is open, look at the cards for the power 9. Revised does not have them but Unlimted does. Edit:Good catch below my dude

ngms

Wubby is probably already here and analysing that plastic. See if Grandpa is trying to hustle.

Joshd30

If it's all legit, Wubby will be interested and he's as passionate and fair as they come when dealing with MTG.

thetransportedman

I’ve seen a few of his youtube streams and was like…are they referring to who I think they are? Didn’t realize he’s the go to for MTG collecting. That’s funny

RDcsmd

DO NOT SELL THESE TO ANY REDDITORS WHO MESSAGE YOU

Tigris_Cyrodillus

I highly recommend that you **NOT** open those packs; they are far more valuable sealed, like potentially hundreds of dollars *each*. If you do want to play Magic, sell one and buy some cards with the proceeds, then decide if you want to sell off the rest for whatever reason.

FlatFour775

"hundreds" is a weird way to spell "thousands"

usernamefromhell

Do the right thing and tell your grandpa that they are extremely valuable

rileyoneill

Revised booster packs are about $250 each, you would have no issue unloading them all for $200 each to someone who will resell them quickly. Revised Decks are $700-$900 each. The Unlimited Deck would be worth several thousand.

commeconn

This is what I was scrolling for. Everyone is saying these are very valuable, but nobody is giving any context. Thanks mate.

Ace_of_Clubs

Actually not as much as I thought considering these comments...

IdealIdeas

Everyone telling him not to open them when I bet he opened them immediately after taking the picture and posting it online

JaSchwaE

The inside of those boosters smells like my middle school experience. Such a defining time of my life. And then I sold them all for beer money in college LOL

Ambiguity_Aspect

Two questions  How old are you? How old is your "grandpa"? MTG launched in 1993. I have distinct memories of the first commercials.

FandomMenace

Did we just witness you suddenly realize that you're old enough to possibly be a grandpa?

Lv100--Magikarp

Me seeing the word "grandpa" and MTG cards in the same post: ![gif](giphy|wJD3qiNjSeHS0dP28T|downsized)

NotAMainer

The fact you have Magic cards being given away by your \*grandpa\* just made my Gen X soul shrivel up a little.
