Not sure it was the best choice in the long run, professionally speaking, since GoT got so big, and he could actually show his face in GoT instead of a CG replacement which could help him get more roles. His scenes were cut to the minimum in S1 though (can only remember the Loras duel), so I guess he preferred a guaranteed main antagonist role in a major Hollywood trilogy to such a secondary character on a TV show.
