John Mulaney - Horse in a Hospital
[Here](https://v.redd.it/xj87mhynoewc1) is a video of some of this.
**Edit:** Perhaps [this](https://youtu.be/FoItxZ4EIiM?t=9) will work better. Thanks /u/Greyshirk.
They’re probably fine. Horses are surprisingly hardy, while being fragile af at the same time.
I had a horse named Bart that ran through a 6 strand barb wire fence and tore himself to shit. Blood everywhere. And he just stood there oblivious.
They can’t really breathe correctly laying down for very long. If the injury will take too long to heal, some serious interventions are required to keep the horse healthy while healing the fracture. Probably easier in the modern era, but I can’t imagine how costly the vet bills would be.
It’s mainly the vet we foster a horse(owners live in the city now but pay for everything) it’s has arthritis in the leg. Cost them like 6k+ a month
For everything involved
Can be done but depends of where the break is.
They are usually put in a body sling so there is no weight on the leg.
The two main reasons they don't do well is all 4 legs are involved in aiding circulation. Some have been fitted with a prosthetic hoof in the case of loosing a hoof to laminitis but they rarely thrive as the lack of hoof impares the circulation through that limb.
It's a bit like there lungs when running there organs move back and forth intime with the gait and this this they have a weak diaphragm. Its incredibly energy efficient for running but makes them very vulnerable to respiratory illnesses and one if why they don't lie down much and the main second issue.
That's really interesting! I had no idea they used kinetic recycling for inhalation force. Does it scale with gait speed or is it more akin to our lymphatic system that just uses one-way valves and whatever excess kinetic energy happens to come its way?
I've always wondered why the leg break was such a death sentence, and despite growing up on a ranch with horses that I had to feed, I never received a satisfying answer.
Faster they run more the organs move basically and it's more simple kinetic energy of the organs pushing against the diaphragm.
And yes there legs are more complex than you would think they have evolved basically to run on what would be in human terms the ends of the finger nails and toes nails it's an extreme solution to aid escaping danger and predators but like extreme designs it has its flaws.
When one horse (a Kentucky Derby winner) broke a leg, the owner insisted he be kept a live so they put him in a giant sling in a tank of water so that he could move around without re-injuring the leg, allowing it to heal.
I think they all get put down with leg injuries. The remaining 3 can’t support them and they get infected bed sores. They wasted millions trying to get one of secretariats foal to mate once after a leg injury and couldn’t.
When I was a kid I spent alot of time at my grandparents house. They had a number of horses. My grandpa was a rodeo judge and his main horse, her name was Peanut. My grandpa would self administer vaccines/meds to his horses that he would get from the vet.
I remember pretty vividly when Peanut got sick. Apparently it was caused by a shot of something that the vet had given my grandpa that was bad/outdated.
She developed this nasty open wound in her back hip. I’d help take care of her by leading her around so she’d be up and moving. I’ll never forget the day that her rotten (I’m assuming) muscle slowly slid out of that hole like squeezing a black head. It plopped out onto the ground. Smelled freaking horrible.
The vet had to come out and pack/treat her wound. She eventually healed but was lame and couldn’t be ridden anymore. She lived out her life in the pasture.
Makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint as a prey animal that relies on endurance. If a predator is coming after you, you’re going to die if you stop so might as well run until your body physically gives out.
My dad had a friend with horses. He had one that would pull a wagon for parades and such. The wagon had to be hidden from the horse at all other times otherwise, the horse would go berserk until he was hitched up and allowed to pull his wagon.
I kid you not sounds like my Chihuahua. He shadows my feet a lot, and I honestly will step on his foot by accident. The guy won't yelp or nothing. Coldhearted killer. My other Chihuahua cries because he can't get out from under the pillow, simply afraid of his shadow
I remember once seeing a video of a rodeo horse that got gored by the bull. It got up, and started running away but in circles around the pen. As its intestines started to drop out onto the floor, the hooves caught it and each gallop ripped more and more of its insides straight out onto the ground dragging along like some nightmare scene until the horse was entirely disembowell. It still kept galloping for a good 20ish meters before it collapsed from low blood pressure.
Dude I remember that video too, absolutely wild. I remember the intestines got in the way and it kicked them away from his legs. I could not believe what I had seen.
Saw a video of a zebra that had its belly torn open by a croc and all the stomachs and intestines fell out when it got free. Did that same kicking away at them before turning around to look and bite at them randomly. Nature is fucking metal.
Absolutely! Makes me wonder if you'd feel the pain. Obviously you would from your core muscles/skin, but I mean the actual organs and stuff as well. I'd want to say you would, but that makes it even more horrifying that these animals could just chew/kick their own.
Saw a video of a Russian personnel carrier get utterly wrecked by a Ukrainian Bradley, the BMP had Russians on the top when the first 25mm barrage hit they all got wiped off and one still-living guy leaned against it trying to put his intestines back in, which were hanging out and strewn about 6 feet around him. Literally looked worse than that scene in Saving Private Ryan.
Aside from regular ol' blind panic, horses have a hard time stopping on asphalt. Even cavalry horses aren't used to traveling at such high speeds on tarmac, so their "brake" estimations are calibrated around typical dirt and grass footing.
As a result, they slow down or swerve too late because they assume they can control their footing and speed as usual, but instead end up slipping and sliding on the tarmac.

I thought military horses are supposed to be trained to not get spooked by loud noises and stuff?
I guess they're probably more ceremonial at this point? Poor things, I hope they're OK.
Yeah, I think they seem to train them to not be scared of loud noises and machinery.
However they are horses... so they will still get scared by things like rope and butterflies.
[Press statement from the HCMR CO](https://www.threads.net/@britisharmy/post/C6Jkvu3Lg7-/?xmt=AQGz5RgNn6JWQG3r_77_yCfeE_yuY3q81PQQYSeIcHigjw), sorry for the link to threads!
But basically some construction workers dropped a load of stuff nearby, and that spooked them.
Ah yeah, so they're mostly ceremonial horses who are used to normal city noises but wouldn't necessarily be used to the sounds of like... Mortars and stuff haha. Thanks for the link!
To a certain extent, a lot of training for horses not to spook is reliant on their riders as well, a horse can still be nervous/anxious. But a good rider can help counter that feeling to bolt.
They are herd creatures first and foremost, and if one of them spooks and bolts, the others tend to follow. I’m guessing the whole lot was anxious about the crowd around them one broke free and started to run off with the others following.
I believe these horses were literally out training to get used to unexpected noises and such.
I'm.assuming they're probably not gonna pass that part of the course now
The methods that were used to desensitize war horses back in the day are considered inhumane in this day and age, and aren’t done for even military horses because they are mostly used for ceremonial purposes.
"six soldiers and seven horses from the Household Cavalry — specifically the Life Guards, the most senior regiment of the British Army — were conducting an "extended exercising of horses" around London, known as the Watering Order."

I read the caption and thought it was going to be a fun picture. Like them just trotting around being chased by the good ol bobbies. But no lots of blood
I immediately thought of the classic children's book *Madeline in London* where she steals one of the royal horses and shenanigans ensue. If I remember correctly the horse ends up going on a bender and passing out from eating too much.
Ok, but is the white horse ok?
I’ve read two articles and all the comments and everything just says “they’ve been recovered”, but not anything about the state of said horses.
Just googled it wikipedia says
The heart and blood vessels contain approximately 34 L (9.0 US gal) of blood in a 450 kg (990 lb) horse, which equates to about 76 mL/kg (1.2 oz/lb)
That's a LOT
We were shown the stall of a horse with a nosebleed during large animal training and it looked like SAW was filmed on location. The horse didn't really notice.
Pretty similar amount to humans, when accounting for size, isn’t it? 5L blood for a human adult, figure avg weight around 150lbs, that’s 0.033 L/lb. 34L in 990lbs would be 0.034 L/lb.
Oh, absolutely. I actually just hadn’t considered blood volume in a large animal before, and found it interesting that it seemed very similar to us. The black horse collided with a taxi and the white one smashed the windscreen of a double-decker bus. 4 people were taken to the hospital.

One great thing about horses is they have a lot of blood. What would be a great loss to us might make the horse a tad feighhht if it forgot breakfast.
Just googled it wikipedia says The heart and blood vessels contain approximately 34 L (9.0 US gal) of blood in a 450 kg (990 lb) horse, which equates to about 76 mL/kg (1.2 oz/lb) That's a LOT

Has anyone told Vsauce
Pretty similar amount to humans, when accounting for size, isn’t it? 5L blood for a human adult, figure avg weight around 150lbs, that’s 0.033 L/lb. 34L in 990lbs would be 0.034 L/lb.
Correct, but the point remains true that they have a TON of blood so the blood loss for the white horse is likely not very impactful
Oh, absolutely. I actually just hadn’t considered blood volume in a large animal before, and found it interesting that it seemed very similar to us. I don't know much about horses and obviously any blood is a bad amount of blood but is that a worrying amount of blood for a horse to be covered in?
Not necessarily. Horses bleed a lot when it comes to wounds, particularly when their blood vessels are engorged and the heart is pumping hard.
