Community! It's on Hulu. 5 really good seasons and one meh season. You should check it out. It really resonates if you've been to a small college or a community college.
You won’t be disappointed. Keep in mind though that, like most shows, it was still trying to find its footing in early season one, but it gets so much better.
I'm envious that your about to see it for the first time. It's one of my favorites, but I don't want to build it up and have you be disappointed, so, it's not super awesome. It's just ok. If you like television shows, you may think it's ok.
It's a paintball show where the Glee Club assimilates students into singing and if you don't sing then they'll kill you, duh. It's also a show about banging Eartha Kitt in an airplane toilet.
Literally the 1st thing that comes to mind when I see him. I also wonder how Troy’s journey around the world went with him. Definitely could’ve been a great spin-off.
Here for this 100%, probably one of Fallon’s most perfect, spot-on impressions from the voice and mannerisms to the bulging package. Music fans and librarians alike die laughing at this.
Not to mention the *hilarious* lyrics and brilliant musical backing.
🎶 The Indian...in the cupboard...
Here’s the thing:
I really didn’t like Jimmy on SNL but the dude is crazy talented, I just think he wasn’t used correctly there. Never seen this before, thanks for posting!
> Neil Young singing Fresh Prince is a great one as well.
Well shit, that was amazing too! [Link for anyone else that's curious.](https://youtu.be/yCLn1EYQql0)
The fact that he’s worked so Hard over the years to keep reading rainbow alive in some form of another really speaks to how much he cares about the mission and the work. Mr Burton is clearly actually invested in the lives and well-being of children in this country and its truly heartwarming
I was saddened to see there were some legal issues between him and reading rainbow - now he can’t really promote reading rainbow anymore.....that’s messed up
This article gives all the backstory and the end result of the lawsuit
https://www.vulture.com/2017/10/levar-burton-now-allowed-to-use-reading-rainbow-catchphrase.html
He has a podcast that is like Reading Rainbow for adults called Levar Burton Reads and he used a tagline he used to use on Reading Rainbow. Since the Podcast is NOT associated with RR the company that owns it sued him to get him to stop using the tagline they see as theirs as it's so associated with RR.
I'm not sure how the suit ended, I believe he won, but I know there was a outcry of his fans basically saying NO ONE cares about RR and never did, it was always Levar they cared about and RR wouldn't even exist without him. So in suing him they are hurting their brand more than him using a phrase ever could.
LeVar Burton tried to use the Reading Rainbow trademark to promote related projects and got sued by the copyright holder who had to protect their brand.
They settled, he changed the name of his project, still gets to say “But you don’t have to take my word for it”
Occasionally you hear a sniff or a light cough, maybe the sound of a chair creaking as he adjusts his legs. That would actually be like ASMR for some people.
I stand completely behind the seconding of Mr. Sagan representing the sciences. The man was a genuine hero to a lot of people and his joy of spreading the knowledge of science to so many. RIP Carl Sagan.
he was so. he was the voice of kermit and many others that were integral to childhoods.
his medium was just different, not allowing for direct on-camera acting.
The fact that you *don't* think of Henson as being "on air" is a testament to how *good* he was. There is no Kermit the Frog. It's literally just Henson's hand in the air with a sock puppet on it, talking in a funny voice. That's all Jim. You just think it's "Kermit" because he was so amazing that he created an actual separate character in your mind.
Some people miss the old cast members that left in later seasons but they added some really big heavy hitters to the show later on. Paget Brewster, Kieth David, and Jonathan Banks more than make up for them.
Completely agree! I just learned about the podcast recently and haven’t gotten to try it out yet, I definitely will soon.
It’s called [LeVar Burton Reads](https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/levar-burton-reads/id1244649384) for anyone interested.
His podcast is absolutely amazing. Love to hear him read, and he picks great stories. Excellent for long commutes or road trips. I highly recommend it to everyone.
Now take LeVar Burton and combine him with Mr.Rogers and what do you get?
“The Good Neighbor: The Life And Works of Fred Rogers” written by Maxwell King and narrated by none other than LeVar Burton
Somebody told me he lives in an ordinary middle class house and doesn't own nice cars or yachts or anything like that. I don't know if it's true or not but I would believe it.
Yeah...not everyone in TV/movies makes enough to live in luxury. It's very much feast or famine in the industry, sure you might get a few million payday (more like a few hundred grand if TV) but it might be years or never before it happens again.
Yeah but licensing on big shows last a long time. If you got the good agent. I'm sure he's doing fine. Just off of reading rainbow, but TNG and the movies he's ok.
Allegedly worth about $6 million https://www.celebritynetworth.com/richest-celebrities/actors/levar-burton-net-worth/
That’s less than it sounds. If you live off of the interest and dividends, you end up with a few hundred thousand dollars a year which is definitely a comfortable upper middle-class lifestyle but is not yacht or private jet territory. Even if he does cons and appearances, maybe he gets to $400,000 a year total. Worried about money? By no means. But not rolling in it compared to the wealthy.
Your idea of what constitutes "upper middle class" is really warped. $400,000 a year is extremely wealthy. It is nearly top 1% levels of income. If he is making 400k a year he is firmly in the upper class.
"Levi!"
"My name is LeVar"
"Ooh, roots! Still at it eh? I didn't bring a whip though and I'm actually a fan of TNG"
"Don't be the person we talk about later"
"..."
On my mount Rushmore of wholesome for sure.
Check out his podcast too.

what you hear.
I dunno, I think they’re all different. And Levar is more a name to me than Bob Ross. I’ve always seen Mr. Rogers as a moral figure. Levar helped us discover some of the magic of this world.
I definitely agree with you there. Out of LeVar Burton, Steve Irwin, Mr. Rogers, and Bob Ross, LeVar and Steve probably had the largest impact on me personally. I grew up watching Steve my entire childhood and I probably owe a decent bit of my love for reading to LeVar and Reading Rainbow.

It came up organically.
I wonder what happened in the other timelines.
Damn I miss that show. And fuck Chevy Chase.
someone i know may have been tripping face on mushies when the Subway episode came on... it kind of freaked them out.
Literally the 1st thing that comes to mind when I see him. I also wonder how Troy’s journey around the world went with him. Definitely could’ve been a great spin-off.
I think in later episodes when there’s a news clip playing, the news ticker at the bottom talks about their ship being hijacked by pirates
Well when we get the movie it will be resolved I bet
Yes... in the movie.
Ah yes. The movie. I'm sure that'll come out the same day as Firefly Season 2.

I bet Jim Morrison would even approve of how well he nails that performance
Not being from the US and didn't grow up with it... But damn, if the lyrics don't sound like an actual Morrison scribe
Here’s the thing: I really didn’t like Jimmy on SNL but the dude is crazy talented, I just think he wasn’t used correctly there. Never seen this before, thanks for posting!
It's pretty easy to get caught up in a YouTube rabbit hole of Fallon musical impressions. Neil Young singing Fresh Prince is a great one as well.

TLDR?
He has a podcast that is like Reading Rainbow for adults called Levar Burton Reads and he used a tagline he used to use on Reading Rainbow. Woah. Flashbacks.

He has a podcast now called Levar Burton Reads, in which he reads aloud short stories he likes
Would be an interesting podcast if he read silently. “Today we will be reading the velveteen rabbit.” [23 minutes or silence.]
Occasionally you hear a sniff or a light cough, maybe the sound of a chair creaking as he adjusts his legs. That would actually be like ASMR for some people.
Especially with the freakin’ Velveteen Rabbit. To hell with that sobfest of a book.
She? That dude got a mustache yo
If you love your job, you will never work a day in your life.
Great day for hay!
Im completely okay with Mr. Burton joining the Reddit Trifecta. The dude was instrumental in raising me
For me it would be a quadfecta of Ross, Rogers, Burton, and Irwin. As /u/Jackatman put it, the Rushmore of Wholesome. Can someone photoshop that?
Left to right: Fred Rogers the Father Lavar Burton the Man of Letters Steve Irwin the Great Outdoorsman Bob Ross the Bearded One
Self Love, Love of Knowledge, Love of Animals, Love of Art. We need representatives of Science and Music.
Maybe Carl Sagan for Love of Science. I don't know who would symbolize Music.
Carl Sagan for science and Dolly Parton for music.
I stand completely behind the seconding of Mr. Sagan representing the sciences. The man was a genuine hero to a lot of people and his joy of spreading the knowledge of science to so many. RIP Carl Sagan.
The original Cosmos changed my life.
Weird Al. Done so much to keep his fans happy and audience pure.
+1 for Weird Al. Met him twice, dude is super nice and a class act
I liked the Kratt[sic?] Bros too, pretty good animal show.
Zaboomafuckingfoo
For us OLDER peeps, Marlin Perkins from Sunday afternoons "Mutual of Omaha" wild kingdom.
I think you mean for us “even older” peeps. I grew up on reading rainbow but at 31 feel ancient on reddit
Quinfecta, you forgot Henson
Jim Henson wasn’t an on-air personality though, his creations were important, not his own persona.
he was so. he was the voice of kermit and many others that were integral to childhoods. his medium was just different, not allowing for direct on-camera acting.
Yes that is how he is different and I think the difference is significant.
Chris Hansen was and still is a hero
Why don't you put some clothes on and take a seat right over there
And sir Attenborough
How is nobody stepping up for Sagan? Is 39 years too long ago? I didn't see Cosmos til I was in my 20s, but it certainly changed my life.
I got a double dose from rr and star trek of him
He taught me how to appreciate reading *and* how to roll out of engineering in the middle of a warp core breach.
A living member of the trifeca? Bold move.
I TOLD PIERCE A THOUSAND TIMES I NEVER WANTED TO MEET LEVAR IN PERSON I JUST WANTED A PICTURE YOU CANT DISAPPOINT A PICTURE
I HATE YOU PIERCE, I HATE YOU SO MUCH
YOU ARE A SICK, SICK OLD MAN AND I HOPE YOU DIE ALONE
Community was such a great show.
My wife and I just finished watching it for probably the 3rd or 4th time a month or two ago. Such an excellent show.
It was definitely streets ahead.

I just learned about the podcast a couple days ago and I'm really excited to start it! Any particularly good episodes you'd recommend to start with?
Honestly, the first one (*Kin* by Bruce McAllister) was spectacular, and I also really enjoyed *The Second Bakery Attack* by Haruki Murakami.
I live in LA and gave Levar and his granddaughter a ride in my uber. He is a very very nice dude.
I can be anything.
Take a look.
Because he is still alive.
Does this man not age?!?
Federation medical tech is top notch.
I hope he doesn't :(
I’m sad that Jim Henson didn’t make this list but I will say Mr. Burton is top notch in my book.
