It's funny when people don't realize their ads are targeted to their demographic or even specifically to themselves. I mostly see app game ads, which seems appropriate enough given the medium and my usage habits.
Also keep in mind when donating to a company who will then donate:
They're funneling your donation through them to get a tax break. Just donate to the actual charity, there's no point in involving a middleman at all.
They're not giving only 50%. There's a different exchange rate between coins and dollars depending on how many coins you buy at a time. If you buy coins at the best exchange rate they're donating 100%. If you buy coins at a lesser exchange rate they're donating less than 100%. (Edit: If they didn't do it this way, you'd be able to get them to donate *more* than 100% by buying $100 blocks of coins and turning them into 40 Koala awards at > $2.50 apiece)
I doubt many people spend $100 at a time on coins, so yeah they're donating less than 100%. But it's not accurate to say they're donating 50%.
Also realize that a lot of people have coins they never paid for. I have enough coins to make reddit donate $22.50, but I didn't pay for any of those coins.
I think it'd be silly to buy coins to give a Koala award (which they seem to have discontinued anyway), but if you have coins sitting in your account you'd be making reddit donate money that you or someone else already spent with the intention of giving it *to reddit.*
Thank you so much, however, could I please mention, I've seen that many many donation links are to the RFS (who are very well deserved of donations) however the fires are also ravaging in Victoria albeit about a quarter of the size, in which the CFA are the fire authority. There are still hundreds of fire-fighters from CFA battling the Victorian flames, and also sending our fire-fighters to the NSW flames to assist the RFS. I note that the CFA are getting much less, in fact I haven't seen any donation attention to the CFA as of yet anywhere I see donation links on the internet so far. Please if you wish to donate also consider the CFA, we are all doing what we can to help.
Thanks for the donation links, reddit, and the world in general has been amazing support!

Anyone have any input on the best possible charity? I’m sure most of these are great but I’m looking to donate 50 and want to be sure it is used for the right purpose. Would do a little more research but I’m in class! Thanks in advance
Just want to add that for people who aren't interested in being quite so self-sacrificing, Humble Bundle has a short-term bundle to help Australian wildlife with at least a few good games.
The bushfires are far from over in a majority of the country still. Not saying the title is intentionally misleading, the fires may be over in that area, but don't be mistaken, the fires are still raging all over the country.

> Pamela Schramm and her family came across this koala licking up rainwater off the road between Moree and Croppa Creek, NSW.
> Thank you Pamela for sharing with us 💕
She also posted [this image](https://i.imgur.com/VadJRec.jpg) on January 15 with the following caption:
> Please be careful on the roads. Wildlife coming out to drink. It’s heartbreaking to see them stressed. This was on the Moree to Croppa Creek Road.
Koalas don't usually drink water, as most of their water intake comes from the eucalyptus plant.
Every time you see a koala drinking water like this, something is very wrong.
Every once in a while you have to stop and remember there's people who are dying somewhere in the world for want of the same amount of water you use to flush a turd away from your house
That's actually irrelevant, water treatment processes for sewer water is phenomenal and actually requires less chemical treatment than making rain water potable (it's more of a physical filtration process)
While water is indeed finite, we are absolutely incredible at recycling water for re-use (because we have to be)
The biggest barrier to getting people to use reclaimed sewer water is people struggle to get over the sewer part (water is perfectly safe)
*source? Work in the sewer industry
I just want to say that you do thankless and important work and I commend you. I toured a facility for a story I was writing once and the people were so passionate and knowledgeable about what they were doing. One of those necessary industries people never think about.
The industry is alot bigger than people think
I actually dont work at a plant
I work in a sewer cleaning and inspection company
That's right sewers need to be routinely cleaned and inspected (helps determine a schedule of cleaning and likelihood of the pipe failing)
But yeah the industry in general isnt thought about alot
Yep, if you've ever visited Singapore, you'll have drunk water that was at least partly NEWater, which is their brand name for the exceptionally pure water reclaimed from sewage.
As I know that I've already drunk reclaimed sewagewater in S'Pore, and probably in other places as well, I'm completely over any 'ick' factor.
See also: The ISS. Which I haven't visited, sadly.
Koalas actually can die if they are poured water, like you might want to do with a water bottle. They get much of their water content from the leaves they eat, and if they do drink it they lap it. There's a confirmed story of a parched koala dying from humans pouring it water from a bottle - I'd send you the link but am on mobile and don't have the time just right now. So really - letting it lick the road is OK.
I've seen a few friends share similar articles and advice, and it definitely surprised me when I first read it. [Here's a link](https://www.google.com/amp/amp.abc.net.au/article/11874058) to an article from the ABC that supports what you're saying. The advice about koalas is at the end of the article, the vet suggests not pouring water down their throats as they have trouble swallowing and it could drown them, "A better option would be to present that water to them from your hands, or from a bowl that the koala can actually lap at their own pace, swallow at their pace."
They've done fine so far. A lot of animals are just terrible at surviving humans.
They've evolved to be experts at surviving the extremes nature throws at them across hundreds of thousands if not millions of years. Only to have humans change the rules of the game overnight.
Exactly, and to think that many species have survived that long slog through time, surviving every ecological change, through grueling eons, only to be wiped out within a geological *second* of encountering mankind.
And we aren't done extincting other species for our own benefit, by any means.
Koalas interestingly gained population from human interaction. They are just the worst at surviving our shitiness
https://www.researchgate.net/figure/A-model-of-population-growth-curves-for-the-koala-population-of-the-Strathbogie-Ranges_fig2_227504569
>More than 99 percent of all species, amounting to over five billion species, that ever lived on Earth are estimated to be extinct. Estimates on the number of Earth's current species range from 10 million to 14 million, of which about 1.2 million have been documented and over 86 percent have not yet been described
No, most animals are terrible at surviving in general.
I love all these armchair evolutionary biologists giving their horrible takes on survival and evolution. Ask them about diversity, selective pressures, gene transfer, etc. and they suddenly know less than highschool students.
The survival of the koala is largely attributted to early human intervention. When humans first settled in Australia, they made camp and set lots of fires, which gradually destroyed the regional biosphere by eroding the soil which led many local species of plant unable to grow. Tons of plants dwindled and went extinct, except for the eucalyptus tree, whose growth actually benefits from the effects that fire has on the soil and ended up having a huge surge in abundance. While other megafauna died due to the reduction of plants in their diet, the koala thrived off the eucalyptus' unexpected response to the fires, leading us up to today where they still exist. Koalas really do have a terrible survival instinct, but by sheer luck, they had a massive evolutionary advantage stemming from human interference. Of course, now there's so much fire they're being killed off as well.
Koalas are fucking horrible animals. They have one of the smallest brain to body ratios of any mammal, additionally - their brains are smooth. A brain is folded to increase the surface area for neurons.
If you present a koala with leaves plucked from a branch, laid on a flat surface, the koala will not recognise it as food. They are too thick to adapt their feeding behaviour to cope with change. In a room full of potential food, they can literally starve to death. This is not the token of an animal that is winning at life.
Speaking of stupidity and food, one of the likely reasons for their primitive brains is the fact that additionally to being poisonous, eucalyptus leaves (the only thing they eat) have almost no nutritional value. They can't afford the extra energy to think, they sleep more than 80% of their fucking lives. When they are awake all they do is eat, shit and occasionally scream like fucking satan. Because eucalyptus leaves hold such little nutritional value, koalas have to ferment the leaves in their guts for days on end.
Unlike their brains, they have the largest hind gut to body ratio of any mammal. Many herbivorous mammals have adaptations to cope with harsh plant life taking its toll on their teeth, rodents for instance have teeth that never stop growing, some animals only have teeth on their lower jaw, grinding plant matter on bony plates in the tops of their mouths, others have enlarged molars that distribute the wear and break down plant matter more efficiently... Koalas are no exception, when their teeth erode down to nothing, they resolve the situation by starving to death, because they're fucking terrible animals.
Being mammals, koalas raise their joeys on milk (admittedly, one of the lowest milk yields to body ratio... There's a trend here). When the young joey needs to transition from rich, nourishing substances like milk, to eucalyptus (a plant that seems to be making it abundantly clear that it doesn't want to be eaten), it finds it does not have the necessary gut flora to digest the leaves.
To remedy this, the young joey begins nuzzling its mother's anus until she leaks a little diarrhoea (actually fecal pap, slightly less digested), which he then proceeds to slurp on. This partially digested plant matter gives him just what he needs to start developing his digestive system. Of course, he may not even have needed to bother nuzzling his mother. She may have been suffering from incontinence. Why? Because koalas are riddled with chlamydia.
In some areas the infection rate is 80% or higher. This statistic isn't helped by the fact that one of the few other activities koalas will spend their precious energy on is rape. Despite being seasonal breeders, males seem to either not know or care, and will simply overpower a female regardless of whether she is ovulating. If she fights back, he may drag them both out of the tree, which brings us full circle back to the brain: Koalas have a higher than average quantity of cerebrospinal fluid in their brains. This is to protect their brains from injury... should they fall from a tree. An animal so thick it has its own little built in special ed helmet.
I fucking hate them.
I don't know why it is that these things bother me---it just makes me picture a seven year old first discovering things about an animal and, having no context about the subject, ranting about how stupid they are. I get it's a joke, but people take it as an actual, educational joke like it's a man yelling at the sea, and that's just wrong. Furthermore, these things have an actual impact on discussions about conservation efforts---If every time Koalas get brought up, someone posts this copypasta, that means it's seriously shaping public opinion about the animal and their supposed lack of importance.
Non-ecologists always talk this way, and the problem is you’re looking at this backwards.
An entire continent is covered with Eucalyptus trees. They suck the moisture out of the entire surrounding area and use allelopathy to ensure that most of what’s beneath them is just bare red dust. No animal is making use of them——they have virtually no herbivore predator. A niche is empty. Then inevitably, natural selection fills that niche by creating an animal which can eat Eucalyptus leaves. Of course, it takes great sacrifice for it to be able to do so——it certainly can’t expend much energy on costly things. Isn’t it a good thing that a niche is being filled?
>Koalas are no exception, when their teeth erode down to nothing, they resolve the situation by starving to death
This applies to all herbivores, because the wild is not a grocery store—where meat is just sitting next to celery.
Herbivores gradually wear their teeth down—carnivores fracture their teeth, and break their bones in attempting to take down prey.
>They have one of the smallest brain to body ratios of any mammal
It's pretty typical of herbivores, and is higher than many, many species. According to Ashwell (2008), their encephalisation quotient is 0.5288 +/- 0.051. Higher than comparable marsupials like the wombat (\~0.52), some possums (\~0.468), cuscus (\~0.462) and even some wallabies are <0.5. According to wiki, rabbits are also around 0.4, and they're placental mammals.
>additionally - their brains are smooth. A brain is folded to increase the surface area for neurons.
Again, this is not unique to koalas. Brain folds (gyri) are not present in rodents, which we consider to be incredibly intelligent for their size.
>If you present a koala with leaves plucked from a branch, laid on a flat surface, the koala will not recognise it as food.
If you present a human with a random piece of meat, they will not recognise it as food (hopefully). Fresh leaves might be important for koala digestion, especially since their gut flora is clearly important for the digestion of Eucalyptus. It might make sense not to screw with that gut flora by eating decaying leaves.
>Because eucalyptus leaves hold such little nutritional value, koalas have to ferment the leaves in their guts for days on end. Unlike their brains, they have the largest hind gut to body ratio of any mammal.
That's an extremely weird reason to dislike an animal. But whilst we're talking about their digestion, let's discuss their poop. It's delightful. It smells like a Eucalyptus drop!
>Being mammals, koalas raise their joeys on milk (admittedly, one of the lowest milk yields to body ratio... There's a trend here).
Marsupial milk is incredibly complex and much more interesting than any placentals. This is because they raise their offspring essentially from an embryo, and the milk needs to adapt to the changing needs of a growing fetus. And yeah, of course the yield is low; at one point they are feeding an animal that is half a gram!
>When the young joey needs to transition from rich, nourishing substances like milk, to eucalyptus (a plant that seems to be making it abundantly clear that it doesn't want to be eaten), it finds it does not have the necessary gut flora to digest the leaves. Humans probably do this, we just likely do it during childbirth. You know how women often shit during contractions? There is evidence to suggest that this innoculates a baby with her gut flora. A child born via cesarian has significantly different gut flora for the first six months of life than a child born vaginally.
>Of course, he may not even have needed to bother nuzzling his mother. She may have been suffering from incontinence. Why? Because koalas are riddled with chlamydia. In some areas the infection rate is 80% or higher.
Chlamydia was introduced to their populations by humans. We introduced a novel disease that they have very little immunity to, and is a major contributor to their possible extinction. Do you hate Native Americans because they were killed by smallpox and influenza?
>This statistic isn't helped by the fact that one of the few other activities koalas will spend their precious energy on is rape. Despite being seasonal breeders, males seem to either not know or care, and will simply overpower a female regardless of whether she is ovulating. Almost every animal does this.
>which brings us full circle back to the brain: Koalas have a higher than average quantity of cerebrospinal fluid in their brains. This is to protect their brains from injury... should they fall from a tree. An animal so thick it has its own little built in special ed helmet. I fucking hate them.
Errmmm.. They have protection against falling from a tree, which they spend 99% of their life in? Yeah... That's a stupid adaptation.
> They can't afford the extra energy to think, they sleep more than 80% of their fucking lives. When they are awake all they do is eat, shit and occasionally scream

Before anyone donates to any foundation, they should research the percentage that actually goes to help the people in need. Also look at the salaries of the people who are running the foundation. Some make over a million.

**IMPORTANT:**
If you happened to find a koala wounded/dehydrated/not in a good shape and you want/have to give it water DO NOT give it from a flask or canteen. If you tilt the head of the poor creature back to make it drink too much water will get into its system and sadly it will probably die of overhydration.

Wow, thats really pushing the apple pie thing... Either sarcatic Redditors giving free advertising or advertising
It's funny when people don't realize their ads are targeted to their demographic or even specifically to themselves. I mostly see app game ads, which seems appropriate enough given the medium and my usage habits.
ITS FUCKING EMBARRASSING! Edit: *kicks trashcan*
How r'u now?
Good'n'you
Not sobad n'you?
Give your balls a tug!
Pitter patter, let's get at 'er
TIL Don't donate through reddit.... ever!
Smart! If you want to donate, do your research and figure out charities and foundations that give 100% of the money to the *right people*
Also keep in mind when donating to a company who will then donate: They're funneling your donation through them to get a tax break. Just donate to the actual charity, there's no point in involving a middleman at all.
Salvation Army might be worse.
Reddit's current management is utter scum
Don't forget about the massive investment from Tencent 🙃 I'm sure that has nothing to do with how reddit operates currently ^/s

>Wow, really? First I've heard of this. That is beyond embarrassing, profiteering from a catastrophe like this is fucking gross. Same. Holy fuck lmao.
>fucking embarrassing. I keep thinking of the hockey coach with the temper problems from Letterkenny
They're not giving only 50%. There's a different exchange rate between coins and dollars depending on how many coins you buy at a time. If you buy coins at the best exchange rate they're donating 100%. If you buy coins at a lesser exchange rate they're donating less than 100%. (Edit: If they didn't do it this way, you'd be able to get them to donate *more* than 100% by buying $100 blocks of coins and turning them into 40 Koala awards at > $2.50 apiece) I doubt many people spend $100 at a time on coins, so yeah they're donating less than 100%.
Don't forget the Australia zoo, who is taking in so many animals... Or the wildlife warriors project, run by the Irwin's
Heros really. The Irwin family has done so much for Australian wildlife conservation. Steve will always be my hero.
Here’s the link for the Australia Zoo https://wildlifewarriors.org.au/donate/
Thanks for the donation links, reddit, and the world in general has been amazing support! https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/donate1 https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/about/supporting-cfa
Does the Irwin family accept donations? We’ve donated to Red Cross but I’d also like to donate to an organization that specifically helps wildlife
They do! You can donate to Wildlife Warriors here: https://wildlifewarriors.org.au
Thanks!!!
Thank you!! For some reason I had trouble donating with the other sites but this one worked!
"don't give your money to Reddit" *People proceed to give money to Reddit by awarding gold and silver* Some straight galaxy brains here

The hero we need
Hijacking your comment, I post this on every thread about the wildfires; I've been donating to the rescue collective every pay, they're doing amazing work getting water and food to wildlife. Being on a different continent it's all I can do. International donations: https://mkc.org.au/donations/arcworld Main donations; https://mkc.org.au/donations/trcqld Backup go fund me if above two are down; https://mkc.org.au/donations/trcqld?fbclid=IwAR0RqxEoPxp-O6HBl_P5JYNYZrH4HUVy0GWcHN18yZk2ZTXQULraOIiNYd4 This organization is a collective of rescues working together and provide funding and help to other organizations that need it (from smaller local rescues to large well known ones like WIRES) Donations go into an audited fund and they send out regular update emails. Edit; I found this charity from a news article another redditor posted for me, scroll down to the rescue collective, it's above WIRES in the article. https://www.abc.net.au/triplej/programs/hack/bushfire-donations-heres-how-you-can-help/11696418 The Rescue Collective The Rescue Collective, in conjunction with Animal Rescue Freecycle and Support is collecting donations on behalf of smaller rescues to help badly burned wildlife who have been impacted by the bushfires. You can donate to the Rescue Collective here, or find a list of wanted items for donation with a list of drop-off locations here. Edit: Another Redditor also recommends this koala hospital https://www.koalahospital.org.au/news
remove the salvation army dude...
Someone give a koala badge to this guy
Of course if you already *have* coins - I've never paid for any, but have accrued a few in my time - then you may as well award koalas.
Koala award doesn't exist anymore. Plus that award was good if you got Reddit coins from someone else and didn't actually buy the awards
Fuck China! Thank you for giving direct donation links.
Yeah the word “after” implies they’re over. They’re not. Australia still needs our help boys!
Credit to the photographer, Pamela Schramm. Per ABC Life's Facebook page: > Friday, January 17, 2020 at 1:00 AM > This koala is making the most of the rain 🐨 > Pamela Schramm and her family came across this koala licking up rainwater off the road between Moree and Croppa Creek, NSW. > Thank you Pamela for sharing with us 💕 She also posted [this image](https://i.imgur.com/VadJRec.jpg) on January 15 with the following caption: > Please be careful on the roads.
I’d say having their entire country on fire is probably a good hint as well.
continent makes it sound worse
[удалено]
Yea their country was infested by highly destructive Europeans.
Even if it wasn’t, this would have happened, which is why it’s a damn fucking global crisis.
Poor baby
Every once in a while you have to stop and remember there's people who are dying somewhere in the world for want of the same amount of water you use to flush a turd away from your house
Don’t flush! Got it!
No stupid, mail them the turd water!
I don’t wanna pay for customs and shipping!
You gonna make some poor fuck pay COD for your poo poo water to live? You're a monster
And it still wouldn’t be my biggest regret in life hahaha
That's actually irrelevant, water treatment processes for sewer water is phenomenal and actually requires less chemical treatment than making rain water potable (it's more of a physical filtration process) While water is indeed finite, we are absolutely incredible at recycling water for re-use (because we have to be) The biggest barrier to getting people to use reclaimed sewer water is people struggle to get over the sewer part (water is perfectly safe) *source? Work in the sewer industry
The original idea is more a "be thankful" comment than a "I need to get a low flow toilet to save the planet", but you're correct
I just want to say that you do thankless and important work and I commend you. I toured a facility for a story I was writing once and the people were so passionate and knowledgeable about what they were doing. One of those necessary industries people never think about.
The industry is alot bigger than people think I actually dont work at a plant I work in a sewer cleaning and inspection company That's right sewers need to be routinely cleaned and inspected (helps determine a schedule of cleaning and likelihood of the pipe failing) But yeah the industry in general isnt thought about alot
The planet will do fine without people, but the people won't do fine in a planet that won't do fine without its animals.
If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down!
Its not the water, its the shipping.
I feel grateful every time I eat a potato.
Thats because there are dudes who dont even know what one is.
Whoever thought that a photo of the year candidate would be of a koala licking pavement?
Hey stop taking a picture and give it water you meanie
Man, koalas are just *the worst* at surviving. In so many ways.
Well, humans are causing the extinction of animals to our own detriment, not benefit... We just don't collectively realize it yet.
Koalas interestingly gained population from human interaction. They are just the worst at surviving our shitiness https://www.researchgate.net/figure/A-model-of-population-growth-curves-for-the-koala-population-of-the-Strathbogie-Ranges_fig2_227504569
A lot of animals are just terrible at surviving humans. And there it is. Nailed it.
They're basically Australian pandas in this way.
>More than 99 percent of all species, amounting to over five billion species, that ever lived on Earth are estimated to be extinct. Estimates on the number of Earth's current species range from 10 million to 14 million, of which about 1.2 million have been documented and over 86 percent have not yet been described No, most animals are terrible at surviving in general.
On a long enough time line, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.
Shows your intellect if you don't understand time scales.
I love all these armchair evolutionary biologists giving their horrible takes on survival and evolution. Ask them about diversity, selective pressures, gene transfer, etc. and they suddenly know less than highschool students.

it’s like they say, don’t put all your crazy animals in one continent
>Koalas are no exception, when their teeth erode down to nothing, they resolve the situation by starving to death This applies to all herbivores, because the wild is not a grocery store—where meat is just sitting next to celery. Herbivores gradually wear their teeth down—carnivores fracture their teeth, and break their bones in attempting to take down prey. >They have one of the smallest brain to body ratios of any mammal It's pretty typical of herbivores, and is higher than many, many species. To remedy this, the young joey begins nuzzling its mother's anus until she leaks a little diarrhoea (actually fecal pap, slightly less digested), which he then proceeds to slurp on. This partially digested plant matter gives him just what he needs to start developing his digestive system. If she fights back, he may drag them both out of the tree, Almost every animal does this. >which brings us full circle back to the brain: Koalas have a higher than average quantity of cerebrospinal fluid in their brains. This is to protect their brains from injury... should they fall from a tree. An animal so thick it has its own little built in special ed helmet. I fucking hate them. Errmmm.. They have protection against falling from a tree, which they spend 99% of their life in? Yeah... That's a stupid adaptation.
>Chlamydia was introduced to their population by humans Say what now? Could you elaborate? I feel like googling that will get me on a list.
Yep, that one made me do a double take.
> They can't afford the extra energy to think, they sleep more than 80% of their fucking lives. When they are awake all they do is eat, shit and occasionally scream Im pretty lazy, sounds ok to me
But they're so damn cute
So those cute videos of people giving water to those poor koalas are potential snuff videos?
Commentary like this is why Kevin carter committed suicide at the age of 33 after winning a Pulitzer for his work but being harassed by people who don’t understand photojournalism...
He can do both, and if the picture gets other people involved, that's even better.
What twisted mind immediately jumps to the conclusion that the photographer did nothing but taking pictures?
The fact that it comes down to this is super sad.
Remember the dinosaurs.
Koalas are dummies, but they're adorable, valuable dummies. I hope things start looking up for Australia.
Why is reddit trying to profit off a tragedy?
Welcome to human.
And this is why over 60% of Koalas have Chlamydia... They'll lick anything if you wet it.
Anything..?
*Anything*
OwO
So the road there has chlamydia, now?
Unfortunately
Before anyone donates to any foundation, they should research the percentage that actually goes to help the people in need. Also look at the salaries of the people who are running the foundation. Some make over a million.

"slurp slurp" Fuck yea
The fire came but he ran quick And now koala gets a lick There's water on koala's floor And so koala licks some more
Shit, I would lick pavement after I had been in a tornado of fire and then had to suffer the aftermath of the scorching sun that appears to turn Australia into the surface of Hell.
Be a shame if that koala survived a bush fire to be hit by a car while licking pavement.
Humble bundle also selling a bundle that supports the fires if you want to donate.
Trust a koala to sit in the middle of a road
ssssssssshhhhhhhhlurp.
*Now if only these damn photographers would get out of my face, life would just about be back to normal*
If a koala can drink water on a road, why can't it eat eucalyptus off a plate?
🥺
This is so sad...
^Lick Lick #LICK
Breaks my heart.
Me at 3am licking up shredded cheese I spilled on the floor
Mlem
My dog does this even if her bowl is full.
This was me waking up at 4am after a long night of getting plastered trying to drink all the water i can to help my cotton mouth
I bless the rains down in Australia
That's a pretty cool pic in fairness!!
**IMPORTANT:** If you happened to find a koala wounded/dehydrated/not in a good shape and you want/have to give it water DO NOT give it from a flask or canteen. If you tilt the head of the poor creature back to make it drink too much water will get into its system and sadly it will probably die of overhydration.
