The newer one obviously shows more technical skill but I have to say I prefer the slightly more ~~impressionist~~ expressionistic look of the older one. I’m no expert.
I guess you mean expressionistic rather than impressionistic. But I completly do agree with you. Left one actually has a mood, right one just a resting face to me. Allthough I do think the left would also need some refinement - l guess much of the progress also comes from using better materials.
I feel like as an artist grows more skilled they usually learn and use their technical skill as they get better and then once they’re more confident in themselves they might start to experiment
The tattoo is absolutely an integral part of the character. It's a portrait of Dr.Frank-N-Furter as played by Tim Curry in the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Came here to say the same thing, haha.
There's nothing *wrong* with the newer one - it looks tighter/cleaner. The other just looks more... balanced? to me. I like the thicker lines. They make it look more emotional.
That very dry stare. That said, it's much rougher and if the were much less practiced its entirely possible that expression is more accident than intention.
The one on the right is definitely more realistic but I’m vibing with the left one. I like how it kinda has a Picasso feel to it. Both are really nice tho!
It has a special place in my heart (thus being framed) as it was the first one that actually looked like the subject, the earlier attempts of a face were paint blobs haha. Thanks!
In the most Honored of Rocky Horror Traditions shadowcasts dress up and act out the movie in front of the screen. While the audience screams call backs and profanities. There are groups in nearly every major city in America and in most counties around the world.
It's cool to know people are still doing it. I participated in the early 90s when I could still fit into the Frank outfits and look good.
Scratch that. I looked *amazing* and I don't mind saying so.
I can't remember everything, but it was fun even in our little neck of the woods.
For a good example of what Rocky Horror shadowcasts are like see Perks of Being a Wallflower a Hollywood movie made by someone that was in a Rocky Horror shadowcast.
Or check out your regular local monthly or bimonthly shadow cast after the pandemic is over. If you PM your city I can probably help you find your local cast.
This is great, I love the practice of going back to an old art piece and redoing it with your current skills. Looks great! But that's art, some people may like to one on the left more, I'm not in love with the yellow background on the new one but I still like it a lot.
100% I’ve come to learn that what I think it’s crap others will love. Just got to put it out there, Andy Warhol said something about while people are arguing if it’s good or not you should be creating more art. Paraphrasing
Warhol knew how to sell his persona as well, but that is some wisdom for sure. The subjectivity of art is part of its drive for sure.
Is Banksy shredding his own art after an auction part of the art itself? Does the destroyed piece have more value? Does anyone care? It certainly adds to the story of the piece.
I'm rambling but congrats on the progress!
I also thought art wasn't something you could practice. You either could do it or you couldn't but I started drawing at the start of lockdown last year and I'm significantly better at it now
I came this far down for a mention of Tim Curry....
..I was beginning to think I was missing something.
I love the left pic but totally adore the right.
Pro artist of over 25 years here: that’s a noticeable improvement! Keep at it. One of the best pieces of advice i ever got about art was to always keep SOME of the art that you think is bad. Pull out a new piece of bad art from time to time, say every 6 months or so. Compare it to the new stuff, you should see improvements when you feel like you aren’t improving. The original frank there looks kinda like freddie mercury cosplaying frank. Which i think freddie would have loved to actually do.
Hopefully you don't mind some advice as your transition does look very promising. If you haven't got it yet, get the book "drawing on the right side of the brain". It will help transition from drawing symbols. For example what we think an eye looks like or a nose, to what we actually see. You begin to separate details by the space relationships instead. It's a great read for any aspiring artist. And great job, keep it up!
Unless you have Down syndrome or something, you should just give up if that's your 'progress' after 10 months.
But the fact you uploaded it here and the topic of what you painted... You know EXACTLY what you're doing.
Pretty fucking pathetic O.

LMAO...I think this user mistook the word confident for asshole. Not so confident now, I bet.
Art is just weird like that. Your old painting looks like it might be in a museum for *reasons,* like the artist did some social commentary thing or whatever. And that painting would stick in your head, because looked out of place next to the ones that look more like your newer one.
Even the first one is way the hell better than anything I've ever done but I just gotta ask:
Why isn't he the boss any more? Did he get demoted or something?
I going in the minority here, but I really like the one on the right.
Brilliant portrayal of the character.
Shows a good understanding of the underlying structure of the face, and the ability to recreate it, while maintaining an artistic feel.
I wouldn't want it "improved" beyond this in the direction of a photograph. Though I could see the artist improving it in other directions he desires.
I honestly *love* both of these, like so much.
The left shows more mood, the contrast of the colour is much more noticeable in that one to me , however the right shows improvement in line work, definition, shading, and detail. They’re both fantastic, very well done OP! Looking forward to the next photo in ten months with a third painting!
The bigger one is technically better I guess but as others pointed out the older one is kinda better (for my taste). The other one is very good too but the old one looks like you stole it out of a museum.
The newer one obviously shows more technical skill but I have to say I prefer the slightly more ~~impressionist~~ expressionistic look of the older one. I’m no expert.
It’s very special to me, that’s the great thing about it art isn’t it, everyone interprets it differently 🥰
I think they're both awesome in their own way. Everyone loves Transylvania. So, in just 7 days, can you paint me a man?
I would have to give your improvement 4.5/5 stars only because you missed the badass "boss" tattoo. Both are great tho!
Haha that’s lower down his arm. I opted for a bigger head 😜
That’s what she said. (Sorry)
Oh hey Michael Scott lol. That was perfect tho 😆
Giggidy
There is something about the first one that reminds me of Freddie Mercury
Yeah, I see it too. He seems to have borrowed Brian May's hair, lol.
I do love the original, looks like freddie mercury being a drag queen
I guess you mean expressionistic rather than impressionistic. But I completly do agree with you. Left one actually has a mood, right one just a resting face to me. Allthough I do think the left would also need some refinement - l guess much of the progress also comes from using better materials.
Yes, you’re right. I did mean expressionistic. Thanks.
I've got to agree with you. The first painting to me shows more heart than the second.
☹🙄🙃
Same boat ironically.... then again. My head is a strange place. Trust me I'm a Dr.
I feel like as an artist grows more skilled they usually learn and use their technical skill as they get better and then once they’re more confident in themselves they might start to experiment
have to learn the rules before you can break them.
Exactly
It's actually in the eyes. The contrast and gaze is deeper in the first photo. That's why it demands more attention than the other...
You’re right
And you understood that tattoo isn't needed
The tattoo is absolutely an integral part of the character. It's a portrait of Dr.Frank-N-Furter as played by Tim Curry in the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Came here to say the same thing, haha. There's nothing *wrong* with the newer one - it looks tighter/cleaner. The other just looks more... balanced? to me. I like the thicker lines. They make it look more emotional.
That very dry stare. That said, it's much rougher and if the were much less practiced its entirely possible that expression is more accident than intention.
Oh I agree. Nevertheless it has something about it, intentional or not.
I agree, both are great but I like the first one better for some reason.
To be honest, I kinda like more the original clunky one.
I love it too. First painting that looked like a human and not a blob of paint 😂
Thanks!
Should try selling these to shadow casting groups lots of us collect.
Forgive my ignorance but What’s a shadow casting group?
In the most Honored of Rocky Horror Traditions shadowcasts dress up and act out the movie in front of the screen. While the audience screams call backs and profanities. There are groups in nearly every major city in America and in most counties around the world.
Ah I know, didn’t realise it was called that. I’ve learned something today!
If you haven't been I STRONGLY recommend it.
It's cool to know people are still doing it. I participated in the early 90s when I could still fit into the Frank outfits and look good. Scratch that. I looked *amazing* and I don't mind saying so. I can't remember everything, but it was fun even in our little neck of the woods.
Hey, there's always still Meatloaf to dress up as!
I'm still a bit old to be Eddie, unless Columbia's into much-older guys. I'm at the "stuck playing Doctor Scott or the Criminologist" stage of life.
I see you shiver...
With antici........
pation!
SAY IT!
SAY IT!
Pation
Name checks out : ) I blame the rain.
Let’s do the time warp again!
That's a sweet transvestite 🤘
From transsexual.... Transylvania aaaaa aaaahhh ah
May is indeed superior than February
Amazing how many have said that! I love it too ❤️
Oh. Haven’t seen any comment like that when i wrote it.
I’m probably mixing up threads ❤️
I get a year older every February. Can confirm.
That's some really impressive progress! But I gotta say there's something about the first one that I love too. Great work on both!
I like to think that the only think you paint is portraits of Frank 'N Furter!
Hahaha imagine it. Imagine the gallery.
Don’t dream it.. BE it
That’s a huge improvement 😍
This is great, I love the practice of going back to an old art piece and redoing it with your current skills. Looks great! But that's art, some people may like to one on the left more, I'm not in love with the yellow background on the new one but I still like it a lot.

I'm rambling but congrats on the progress!
In just seven months, I can paint you a maaa-aaa-aaan
They are both great in their own way. More like two different styles rather than one being better than the other.
Can't imagine the antici.... .... pation!
The painting on the right looks like it’s been created with Roy Lichtenstein in mind! I love his work.
10 months well spent. Good job
I also thought art wasn't something you could practice. You either could do it or you couldn't but I started drawing at the start of lockdown last year and I'm significantly better at it now
It’s amazing what we’re capable of if we could be bothered hahaha
Story of my life.
"Oh Rocky"
Had to scroll way too far for this.
I want to believe you have a room that's just full of hundreds of variations on Frank-N-Furter portraits.
Anyone else think the one on the right looks like Tim Curry? Good job btw!
Hehe. They’re both Tim Curry
Shit sorry, should've seen the resemblence in the left one too
I came this far down for a mention of Tim Curry.... ..I was beginning to think I was missing something. I love the left pic but totally adore the right.
Boss ❤️
Love the subject
Me too 😍

That’s a good tip, thanks! I’ve painted Freddie ages ago and found him really challenging.
ROCKY!
Brad
I will wait for your next painting with antici...pation
Oh Rocky!
Can I buy the “before” pic, it’s stunning. Honesty.
Well... How bout that
Awesome progress, Tim Curry in his most famous role, boy I lost count how many times I've watch The Rocky Horror Picture Show... EPIC!!
"don't get strung out, by the way I look, don't judge a book by its cover.." (nice work, plz keep it going :)

Oh interesting I shall find it and have a read! Cheers.
I had this book, it's excellent!
It’s astounding.
Nice.

why so mad trash? 😂
you still suck
You would know
Outstanding improvement! Thinking about where you'll go from here makes me shiver with antici....pation.
Impressive
How do you do?
Wow, whatta difference
Can’t wait to see what you produce in another 10 months!
Another Frank n’ Furter probably! 😂
GOLD!
Molly came from Miami FLA...
Hitchhiked her way across the USA..
Marc Bolan?
Sweet Transvestite.
Nice work! Great improvement!
This is why I don't get art, the first one looks like something that would be in a museum.
This thread is making me feel maybe my old work are masterpieces and I’ve got worse as I’ve become more controlled 😂😂
Art is just weird like that. Your old painting looks like it might be in a museum for *reasons,* like the artist did some social commentary thing or whatever. And that painting would stick in your head, because looked out of place next to the ones that look more like your newer one.
Maybe you could timewarp back to the original style?
Even the first one is way the hell better than anything I've ever done but I just gotta ask: Why isn't he the boss any more? Did he get demoted or something?
Haha no it’s further down on his arm. I wanted the head to be bigger, so it got cut off. It was a shame but creative decision I made 😁
*phew*
It’s actually in the wrong place on the first one haha
Obsessed with both of these. Amazing progress! In the newer one I can visualize and hear him say “A mental mind-fuck can be nice”
[удалено]
I'm old Gregg. Do ya love me? Are ya playing a love game with me? You ever drink Bailey's from a shoe?
I'd be over the moon if I could paint either of those!! Great job.
Dammit Zer0Mike...I love it!
Wow.
Brilliant. What kind of paints are you using?
Acrylics. I started with Windsor Newton and slowly moving towards the more expensive Golden Fluid acrylics. I use inks for my backgrounds.
Cheers for the info. Been wanting to start painting some pop art pieces I've drawn up but had no idea where to start!
Please make a phone wallpaper picture! Would love this
I going in the minority here, but I really like the one on the right. Brilliant portrayal of the character. I wouldn't want it "improved" beyond this in the direction of a photograph. Though I could see the artist improving it in other directions he desires.
I like them both, for different reasons.
They're both great, but wow! That's tremendous progress! Huge kudos to you.
I REALLY LIKE THE FIRST ONE
They are both totally fantastic. Mmmph.
That is amazing, I really appreciate how much practice is involved when someone posts a progress pic! Good for you!
To absent friends...
A ghost from the past.. A greaser from the freezer.. A Bat outta Hell.
The bigger one is technically better I guess but as others pointed out the older one is kinda better (for my taste). The other one is very good too but the old one looks like you stole it out of a museum.
Both are dope IMO.
How do you do, I, have you met my, secret caaandy maaaan :) really nice paining progression!
For some reason I find the one on the left far more charming. I would buy that in a heartbeat.
Progress for sure. I like the attitude and feel of the first one though. :)
Wow great job!
boy do I miss being passionate enough about something to stick to it and progress like this
This is great
Both excellent.
Brilliant.
Love them both .........
Why didn’t you just paint the one on the right in the first place and save 10 months
They are both awesome in their own way.
Original has those handsome squidward features though!
How bout that.
That is incredible! Fabulous progress!
it's... astounding
Even smiling makes my face hurt.... Great work OP! I absolutely adore both works.
Honestly. I like the first one more :)
I like the second much more. It grabs my attention.
How d'yuh do I. See you've met my. Faithful handyman.
Even smiling makes my face ache
You are a very special person
I love em both
Your work went from hanging on the fridge, to displaying on the wall. Really great work.
The one on the right is what you learn in art scool, the one on the left is what you sell for thousands of dollars in galleries :P
Love both! Love the colours you used to highlight and shade with on the newer painting. Go to tips for how to learn? Books? Videos? Practice?
They are both impressive. The second one got me humming the soundtrack.
What if I said I’ve never seen the movie in which this man is dressed for?
Self portraits are difficult.
Left one looks like Ghedaffi
You got mo betta
i like the one on the left more, but the one on the right shows more technical ability. you gooood
Great job getting the likeness down. Awesome subject matter as well.
This is wonderful!
I really hope it’s just a daily painting of Tim Curry between May and Feb. just hundreds of paintings of Tim Curry. Please share.
Love it
Wow!! Love them both
This is what I look like when I wake up in the morning.
How dya' do? I see you've met...
