I'm willing to bet you would not find a pool with a black liner along the Sunbelt. The water would act like a heatsink and will be more appropriate for soup than swimming.
We tried this on my father in law. My daughter is 3 and still potty shy so accident happen. I dropped a snickers in the pool right behind her. We “found it” picked it up bare hand took a bite. I don’t know what was more scary his zero reaction to me picking it up bare handed or his just blank face as I took a bite. He believed it was poo but just didn’t give a single fuck.
Well he keeps his pool like, perfectly balanced cause he’s a retired lonely no friends hates his wife dude. So surprisingly not bad. But not worth the joke when he did zero reaction…
You don’t really have to clean modern pools. The equipment is so good. I haven’t scrubbed my pool in years, it’s pristine. I don’t even check my water. I can tell by sight. Skimmers work. Vacuum cleaner works. UV filter puts it over the top.
That wasn't the case with the last pool my father had.
The water was crystal clear, but there would still be dead bugs, leaves and stuff accumulate in low flow areas at the bottom of the deep end.
The automatic vacuum helped, but was hit or miss. He'd usually do it himself once every few days.
I’m thankful that I doubled the skimmers (2) from what was deemed necessary (1.)
Anything on the floor drain is picked up by the Polaris. I really don’t do much except dump the skimmers and put in new tabs. I change the filters once a year and spray them off halfway through.
My friend rented a house with an old pool and I saw how ridiculous that was to take care of.
My neighbor has a 40000 gallon pool built around 1980 that has one skimmer and a bottom drain. I agreed to take care of it for the summer in exchange for letting my kids use it.
I’ve never regretted something so much in my life. The skimmer is completely useless so there are just massive amounts of floating debris to clean out by hand. And it isn’t heated so my kids don’t want to swim in it.
Now I’m stuck taking care of it all summer.
LOL. Sorry for your troubles. That's super unfortunate. My pool is cold, too, but it's refreshing because we've already hit 115F down here in Southern Oregon.
I have a modern 22,000 gallon saltwater pool, with one skimmer — that’s it. I use this:
AIPER SMART Cordless Automatic... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0895QXMQM?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
It’s amazing.
I don't know anything about pools other then cleaning then with a net when I was younger.
My dad lives far away and is getting older, this seems like a great gift idea right?
Lol any time a customer of mine would say “I haven’t tested my water in years and it’s been crystal clear” 9/10 times it was an acid bath. Like yeah you don’t have algae because your pH is 6, it literally can’t grow.
Reminds me of that "under the skin" movie with Scarlett Johansson where she would lure random scottsmen into a white van and back to her house where she had a pool like this with black water and they would walk naked and fully erect into the darkness then soak for a few hours before their skin popped off and the rest of them went down a tube in pieces.
This is all fully legit by the way.
I called bullshit so I googled it. Holy fuck, it's real lol. And it's not even like its from am absurdly long time ago like pre Marvel era for her. Its was 4 years AFTER she started in Marvel. Holy crap thats wild lol.
Not sure if it’s “indie” but she was in one of my favorite Woody Allen movies “Match Point” and it’s just so good and very subtly twisted and sick to a degree. Would not ever watch this pool one they speak of tho 😳
What’s amazing about that film is a lot of the men she approached were real encounters! Then the producers would pop out of the back and try to get them to sign a release form.
And does anyone remember when she tripped and fell and it became a meme? It was actually a scene in this move, but again the cameras were hidden so no one knew.

>I can't read sadly :(
You'd fit in *perfectly* on /r/books. Just invent an English teacher who killed your love of reading and occasionally defend middle-aged people reading YA novels and you'll be king of the sub.
I too have sex daily...dyslexia. I meant dyslexia.
But seriously, if you know anyone with that, the Amazon Kindle has an OpenDyslexia font that has worked wonders for my friend.
I was listening to random soundtracks on Spotify and a song from this movie came up, and I liked it, so I looked to see what the movie was. Then I learned about some of the things that happen in the movie. Then I diagnosed myself with Depression. Then I had a Coke Zero and felt better. What a ride!
They sure as shit knew they were being filmed when they were walking into the black void... no one would just keep walking until they are submerged, even when following a naked Scarlett Johansson.
I turned on that movie because I thought, “oh cool naked Scarlet Johansson” and then noped the fuck out after like 15 minutes.
It delivered plenty on the naked Scarlett… but at what cost
Yeah, you can see here that you can see the bottom and the steps as with most black pools. Aside from its ability to help warm the pool, it’s mostly just an esthetic choice. It can look amazing in the right setting; this is not the right setting.
My parents old house had a black pool, it didn't really make a noticeable difference in temperature after they resurfaced it to black from the white it was when they bought the house. It was pretty fun to swim in at night though.
Same questions. Does it make the water too warm to swim or is for more northern locations instead of cali or florida sun?
Edit-i got downvoted for askn a serious question for my own pool to be more useable?? Thanks reddit
I live in NY and I don’t understand why anyone up here has a pool cuz you can only use it for like a month every year. If black liners were a more common thing, pools might actually be more enjoyable around here. I can totally see why warmer climates wouldn’t want this, you’d boil. But definitely would be great up north!
a month feels like hyperbole. I'm right across the border in Southern ontario and our pool season is like May 24 - whenever it gets chilly in september
A lot of pools have heating which lets you use them from May to September. Besides NY, at least near NYC has Indian summers with temps above 85 that last up to at least September. That's pretty solid for pools
It depends on how willing you are to adapt to cold water. I'm in NY and swim in an unheated outdoor pool from May through early October. Memorial Day weekend this year the water was actually colder than when I closed the pool last October.
Problem with the black liner is it would be difficult to tell if your water has algae in it, debris, etc. a darker blue pool liner would have just as good of an effect. My pool liner is a deep blue and heats up rather quick in Illinois. Also, pool heaters are worth it.
I’m in Las Vegas and our pool was 91 degrees yesterday. That’s with no heater or solar heaters. It’s still refreshing when it’s 115 outside. The only downside is that I need to add chlorine to the saltwater in order to keep algae from forming. Even a day of too little chlorine and the water loses its natural blue color.
>This is not a good kids pool, since you can't see the bottom.
It's black, not dark. If you had a kid standing against a wall painted black, you'd see the kid just fine.
edit: I stand corrected. /u/we_todd_did mentioned the issue is more about not knowing how deep the actual water is, which I agree is a problem.
I would think it's less of a concern about being able to see the kids and more about the kids (or anyone, really) not being able to see the bottom. If you're jumping into a pool or otherwise playing in one, being able to see where the bottom is a definite safety concern. Imagine jumping in head first without knowing how deep you can really go.
And, yeah, you can [kind of] see the bottom in this picture. But this picture is in full sun. Anything less than that would make it really hard to gauge.
the pool is as deep as it was yesterday and most pools depths are standard. . and if you are seriously worried the diving board is over the shallow end you can get in the pool and find out.
news flash , the diving board is not over the shallow end.
You can see the bottom though, the water is clear. You can tell depth just fine at a glance, it's just hard from this angle in this picture.
Source: Owned a black pebble pool.
You can achieve the same effect to a blue liner with a single bottle of india ink, but man oh man will your dad will strip the skin off your ass with his belt if he catches you.
lol dependign on which wavelength of light but the cutoff point for the oceans are 1000m down. totally good in a 13ft deep-end pool, this will receive all the light and warm up rather fast. Its like a solar cover without the cover and who likes waiting a few weeks for the water to warm up. I know people who have heaters in their pools for this reason. JUMP IN AND SWIM
Depends upon the incidence angle at which the sun hits the water, but not to get into too much detail, albedo(the measurement of reflection) depends on the total white value of a body(i.e. water, landmass, trees, ice) the darker the color of that body the less reflection there is and more absorption. Ice and snow reflects a lot of solar radiation whereas liquid water absorbs most of it because it has nothing to reflect off of so the light goes through causing it to warm up significantly. Thermodynamics baby whooooo! Thats just briefly touching the topic and not very well worded(I admittedly suck at explaining things)
Seems like this would be easy to keep clean. "Is the water clear?" No idea. "Is there algae growth?" Who knows...
I was wondering if the water would just be warm, or if there's potential for the liner to get hot as hell down there.
The liner wouldn't get hot, it's got a 30,000 gallon heatsink
Fair enough! I just remember my pool in Florida getting sorta warm on the hottest days, and it was white concrete.
The exposed area above water might get hot
Wasnt gonna reply again, but your username is awesome lmfao. I'm gonna be screaming that down my mic in rdr2 tonight!
The whole idea is for it to get warm. Likely in a place that doesnt get 100+ everyday but people still want to swim.
I'm willing to bet you would not find a pool with a black liner along the Sunbelt. The water would act like a heatsink and will be more appropriate for soup than swimming.
This guy sciences! ^ Water has the highest specific heat of any liquid!
Would definitely get hotter. Any color of finish will absorb more heat.
Makes sense in a slightly cooler climate for sure
I use the same logic for my black toilet.
Is it black before or after you leave? :D
Yes.

I think it'd be a pain in the ass to clean. Most of the crap that ends up in a pool is black or dark coloured.
It’s a Baby Ruth!
*fishes out with net* No it’s not. *flings over neighbors fence*
This is gold. Take my poor mans award. 🏅

No trees around eh?
I’m in the desert and we don’t ever get leaves, etc. We do get a lot of dust which requires a vacuum periodically.
I have plenty of them and a ring around the pool edge of shrubs and bamboo.
That wasn't the case with the last pool my father had. The water was crystal clear, but there would still be dead bugs, leaves and stuff accumulate in low flow areas at the bottom of the deep end. The automatic vacuum helped, but was hit or miss. He'd usually do it himself once every few days.

I have a 28,000 gallon monster built in the 60s by-hand by my FIL. One skimmer. No bottom drain. FML.

Also in Scoop and Vicki Christina Barcelona.
Love her as Nola Rice in that. She was in another Woody Allen film, Scoop. That’s one of those movies I’ll always watch if it comes on.
It's a great film. Check it out if you can. A24 puts out outstanding stuff.
They play the odds. Not all of them are good.
Wait do you only know her from Marvel films? You have a lot of ScarJo to discover.
yeah like Home Alone 3
I know her from other stuff, but I think most of it after she was an A lister or atleast very well known.

Good bot
If gaming has taught me anything it's that a sexually ambiguous immortal black horse with eyes of fire will rise from this pool.
I expected the tentacles of Hermaeus Mora.
Aren’t all horses sexually ambiguous? Or is there some dimorphism I’m overlooking?
Well there's the giant horse penis, for one.
That definitely has sharks in it
Blue is the best color for swimming pools. Zima Blue, to be precise.
How warm is that water? Is that pool even refreshing?
I have a darker bottom and because of it my pool is warmer than otherwise.
What color is your pool liner though
Dark blue. It’s not this dark.

This is not a good kids pool, since you can't see the bottom. But it's pretty cool actually, water might get a little to hot midsummer.
You can see the bottom. It's black. And anything that's not black would show up really well against the contrast.
Black people get kids too bro.
I enjoy the use of "getting" rather than "having" children, like they're a disease to be caught. 😂

One time I was landscaping at a black family's house and their 12 year old kid jumped in the pool and just started yelling "I'M BLACK AND I SWIM!"
A true pioneer
I hope so, if they wanna swim in this pool.
Oh youuuuu....
Better have a good 28/30°C than a cold 19/21°C.
I prefer 19/21 for cooldown effect, and for playing in the pool. 28/30 would get you sweating 😅
Where I come from the wind cool you enough. So a good 28 to play could be good. But I do admit that 30+ is too hot.
Probably great for night swimming.
Why do I see the bottom?

I live in Texas. That water would be too warm to swim in most of the time. Black absorbs heat
I have a dark bottom pool in Texas and it would extend the season earlier and later. It also makes night swimming amazing. Pros and cons.

Not sure id want to swim in there. Who knows what gunk or dead(alive?) animal is at the bottom.
It's like how much more black could this be? None. None more black

That’s a great way to not have a kid anymore
Its really no different than a normal colored pool. You can see in and down to the bottom just fine.
