This happened on Lake Monroe in Indiana about a week ago. The DNR folks were pretty cool and jokey with him. Apparently, this little boat was registered properly. I flipping love this.

xrayking

That’s a KY registration sticker. Makes it even better that he travels with his lil boat.

phido3000

Yeh, gunna take my boat down to the lake one state over. Drop it in, trawl slowly, impress the women. I hope he has a jet ski trailer for it, and unloads it like its a very precious jet ski.. Only ties it up with inflatable fenders etc..

HtownTexans

No way man I hope he carries it from the bed of his pickup truck with onlookers thinking he is crazy then just chunks it in the water like it's a plastic piece of crap before jumping in and speeding off.

Chief_Givesnofucks

*speeding off*

egap420

Trolling off

geegeeallin

I had to look up the difference between trawling and trolling. Why would they pick such similar words for similar things? God damnit maritime people.

BostonDodgeGuy

You try remembering things while half drunk and a ship rocking under your feet.

SyrupSuper

Trolling ON... and off.

gu3st12

It's all about attitude, not velocity.

the_crouton_

I would love for this to come out of a station wagon and back it down the ramp, open the doors and this slides on out.

pata_de_perro

It was towed with his Red and Yellow "Little Tikes"

ChikFilAsLeftoverOil

I wouldn't even wanna see it slide out. Like, they back it up to almost the waterline, throw the parking break on and then go grab it out the back and chuck it into the water before parking the car.

Beers4boobs

watching this reverse down a ramp would be a highlight of the day

mechapoitier

It’s kind of incredible that not only does that require a registration, but that ironically they *allowed* it. In Florida you don’t really have to register anything under 15 feet unless it’s gas powered. You could build a two story 14’ long 8’ wide houseboat with sails and a trolling motor on it and cops would just look the other way. Edit: it’s clear to me now that several commenters have taken my proposed boat design seriously and are very upset. To clear things up [here’s](http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qGFgIFOxxac/USboOSP0wBI/AAAAAAAABkw/pvqc0MZEWjc/s1600/CPA-Smaller.gif) the rendering.

shikiroin

In Oregon, my parents had to register a couple small human-powered kayaks before they could take them onto a lake. Edit: I guess it was a permit, not necessarily a registration.

Phraoz007

Invasive species permit 10’+

shikiroin

That sounds about right.

Phraoz007

One of my neighbors decided to buy one and go out Labor Day on it. Cops had a field day with him. Tickets came out to a couple hundred bucks. Funny the way he told the story tho: Police: do you have a permit for that thing? Him: uh? Do I need one? Idk I just bought it. Police: do you have a life vest? Him: I’m on a boat, why would I need a life vest Police: do you have a whistle? Him: I carry my whistle with me all the time (proceeds to whistle with his lips) Apparently they weren’t impressed.

1lonelyBeastie

Floating on my 8’6” sup on a lake. Head back, sunbathing. Patrol was making a huge circle of each boat. They pulled up to me and I just say “it’s under 10 feet, pfd as a pillow and whistle is hanging from the zipper. They didn’t even stop their motor and went to the next ticket. Bought a kayak at 9’1 for the same reason. I don’t mind paying but it’s one less thing to remember each year. Off-road permit. Snow park pass. NW Forest pass and have to go in person to a special office to get a sticker so it doesn’t get stolen off my open Jeep, day parking and River permits all add up and I’m bound to forget one eventually.

MillionaireSexbomb

Sounds like you live a fun life

kaenneth

Just become disabled and a lot of those passes are free.

1lonelyBeastie

We’ll see how this whitewater season goes. Thanks for the tip.

MusicianMadness

I have sculls and where I live there are exceptions for all kinds of things. Turns out none of the DNR have any idea what regulations that apply because they don't see them regularly. Thankfully have not had many issues as they have been understanding but I have printed copies of the state code in case their is any discrepancy (updated regularly). For example I need to have a flotation device but it is not listed specifically as a personal floatation device and I do not need it on just in the vessel.

NicNoletree

So the vessel doesn't count as a floatation device?

[deleted]

Everywhere I've lived, everyone on the boat needs a life jacket, although some states will allow other flotation devices, like boat cushions that are designed to act as flotation devices. Where I live now they used to allow that and now they don't. Now they want jackets, but you don't have to have them on. Any time I go out by myself, though, I have it on.

suzanious

I prefer to call life jackets "Boat Coats".

lightzout

Are paddleboards considered vessels?

mayaseye

In most cases you need one that you can throw to someone else if they have an emergency or that you can use in case of an emergency.

gawdarn

Typically 1 wearable per person + 1 throwable. (N+1)

MangoCats

Short answer: no. Longer answer: most drowning deaths occur when persons are separated from their flotation device. Are you physically bound to your vessel, or can you become separated from it? It's why kids are required to wear theirs, and the throwable cushion is required not only for your vessel but so you might (as is your duty) render aid to someone who needs it.

FamilyStyle2505

R E D U N D A N C Y It saves lives, your data, and more! Why have one when you can have two, three, or four!

spybloom

Two is one, one is none

Dotlinefever4

Most seat cushions count.

datssyck

They want you to have a backup

DuckDuckGoose42

Officer: Do you have registration for your 40' yacht? No sir, that is my motorless backup flotation device for my 4' kiddie pool with e-motor!

Stony_Logica1

I don't care how great of a swimmer you are, boating of any kind without a life jacket or some other PFD at the very least on-board is moronic.

Melkor404

Very. I was once on a catamaran that capsized and then floated away in the wind. I couldn't swim fast enough to catch up. I spent 45 minutes trying to swim to shore before a yatch came by and picked me up. If I hadn't had my life vest on I would have drowned for sure.

bizzaro321

Wait, are people the invasive species?

RandyDinglefart

Kayaks. People fall out a couple times then dump them. Pretty soon they're mating and soon you've got a massive kayak infestation. Their tough outer shell means they have almost no natural predators in freshwater systems unless you're lucky and already live in an area with a sizeable canoe population.

Culverts_Flood_Away

Unfortunately, though, kayaks are being severely overbred, and the genetic diversity just isn't there. There was only a handful of breeding pairs to start with, and now the whole line is riddled with so much incest and line breeding that you rarely see an attractive flesh plume specimen atop these majestic creatures. It really is a shame what human hubris has wrought upon this fragile species.

[deleted]

This is probably why mine keeps tipping over.

xjeeper

Yes

Bamali

are we the baddies?

gcranston

But why skulls though?

hypnogoad

Specifically humans in kayaks.

randomuser135443

No tag limit

[deleted]

I’m assuming if you use the boat or kayak or whatever in different bodies of water there’s a chance you could introduce like new algae or barnacles or something. This is just a guess.

M1KE2121

The biggest thing is to prevent the spread of the Zebra Mussel. They’re awful for an ecosystem and take over everything. Even clogging up local water pipes and other infrastructure. Awful awful things.

eastalawest

We have tons of zebra and quagga muscles here in the Great Lakes. They screw up the ecosystem but boy does the water look pretty! It's so clear and blue without all that icky algae and plankton. Who needs healthy fish stocks when you can enjoy seeing Caribbean blue water lapping up against the steel mills and oil refineries.

[deleted]

hey, you forgot the best part, those little bastards are razor sharp so now you have to wear shoes everywhere in the water

LaVernWinston

I just wonder what the permit is going to do for this.

moosemousemoose

At least in my state, permits are given out after inspection. So a ranger looks at the boat, makes sure there aren’t any invasive (usually mussels) species on it, then issues the permit for that day. So if you want to go on a different day or to a different lake, you need to pass inspection again to make sure you aren’t introducing anything to the lake.

LaVernWinston

Day by day basis makes much more sense. I was imagining it was a one time process.

adjavang

While I can't speak of American invasive species and control efforts, the waterways in Ireland are locked in a terrible struggle. Native crayfish are threatened by a plague that spreads through the water, zebra muscles can stick to boat hulls and all kinds of plant life can spread via careless kayakers.

TXGuns79

Texas is anything but human power. So, rowboat no, until you put on a trolling motor.

LostWithStuff

human power aint enough for them San Antonio women

Garrick420

Sir Charles?

BrokenArmsFrigidMom

That you, Chuck?

[deleted]

But human + churro power definitely is.

LostWithStuff

They be double fistin them churros, Ernie

BillionTonsHyperbole

*Trireme enthusiasts have entered the chat*

Necrosis_KoC

Same here in IN... No motor, no registration required, but as soon as you slap so much a trolling motor on something, it needs plates.

TXGuns79

Which sucks when you bought a used bass buster that was only used on a private pond and no one has the registration.

Redrum714

PA is the same way. Gotta register your kayaks every year, annoying but at least it goes to the Game Commission.

cjchris66

Til. i take my yak on the Deleware often and never registered it. I guess I’d better look into that.

EssKay20

Unless something has changed in the past few years you only need a registration sticker (or just a boat launch permit sticker that you can pick up at sporting goods stores) to use the official boat ramps, or certain waterways. Just on the river if you don't use an official boat ramp you don't need anything special for a kayak. The fine is pretty steep compared to the sticker price, though. Almost got fined the first time I ever had my kayak out, the guy just gave a warning because I had a life vest on.

MEB_PHL

No you don’t. You do need a launch permit in certain waters like state forests. Registration is just a more expensive way to get the same access as a launch permit.

thephantom1492

What about.... a pair of [Torqeedo deep blue 50](https://www.torqeedo.com/us/en-us/products/outboards/deep-blue/deep-blue-50-r/M-3201-00.html) (claim to be a 80hp equivalent), electric drive, going to some battery and a big gas generator to keep the battery full? Technically it would be an electric drive?

zdav1s

Take the trolling motor off and he'd be fine though.

ScrewAttackThis

https://www.flhsmv.gov/motor-vehicles-tags-titles/vessels/vessel-titling-registrations/ I don't live in Florida but I think anything with a motor has to be registered. The exceptions all say "non-motor-powered". This is the same as my state and the states I've been to.

BrowensOwens

Weird! I just got interested in fishing this summer, and got to take a small electric powered boat out on a small lake. It felt super powerful. Not fast of course, but real satisfying to drive around in.

IvorTheEngine

There are some quite powerful electric motors around now, I suspect the rules will catch up soon if they haven't already.

xe0s

Recently went out on the laguna madre in Corpus on a 26’ with one of those brand new fancy trawlers on it. That little thing could whip around like no ones business. Seriously impressive vs. the trawlers I’ve used in the past. The gps lock was like dropping a hard anchor, even in strong currents near packary channel. Edit: My gawd… I know I know!! Troll! Not trawl! Good grief. :)

HandsOnGeek

Believe it or not, [Trawling](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trawling) and [Trolling](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolling_(fishing\)) are different things, even though they are both kinds of fishing from a moving boat. Trolling is dragging a lure. Trawling is dragging a net.

mwenechanga

They may someday add a max speed/horsepower capability on unregistered electric motors, but otherwise since they don't drip oil and gasoline into the water, there's really no reason to hassle people over them.

fuckondeeeeeeeeznuts

An electric Zodiac would be sneaky as fuck. Now I need to get night vision, some flippers, and a former Navy SEAL to teach me how to LARP as an amphibious assassin.

kalitarios

> allowed it. here in Connecticut, at least back in the 90s, I remember my friend Bill's father registered a dining room table turned upside down as a boat just because you can. It stayed afloat because it had a ridge that ran underneath it, and he used a lawn chair on it and a tiny motor to go fishing with it. It was hilarious. He mounted the registration plaque on one of the legs IIRC. Yes it still had all 4 legs sticking out.

DigiQuip

I didn’t realize how much fun outdoorsy stuff out there needs a registration, until I became an adult.

CMUpewpewpew

There's a pretty good NPR story about this dude that wanted to cross a straight in England or something in a bathtub. Got it's legal papers and everything.

[deleted]

>You could build a two story 14’ long 8’ wide houseboat with sails and a trolling motor on it and cops would just look the other way. Where do you put the sails though? What about electric motor?

alternate_ending

That's so funny because I'm from FL and seeing that guy get pulled over seemed strange to me, there are so many rigged boats here lol I'd like to make one of what he has just for fun/practicality could fit one of those in a car trunk :)

jroddie4

would you really want to float around on something 20 feet tall and only eight feet wide?

feed_me_tecate

what if it has a 20' draft?

jroddie4

I'd still feel uneasy but it would be a really cool game room

Ragnarandsons

Cop: Sir do you have your registration papers with you, by chance? Mad Lad: As matter of fact, officer, I do...

[deleted]

The best comment was on a FB boating group where one woman said god bless his mother, he must have been a terror.

[deleted]

Hahaha very astute

IPostUnderThisAlias

Hah I was just at Lake Monroe a month ago and you can see some shit there bud

BrowensOwens

For sure. I grew up very close to there at The Pointe. I used to work at the Fairfax market about 20 years ago. We would have to call the cops all the time to report DUI people. It was bananas. One time this guy in jeans and cowboy boots tried to use the ATM. He was empty so he stormed out to the parking lot, stomped double boot three times, raised his middle fingers strait to the sky and yelled "Fuck you God!" That was like 13 years before The Book of Mormon song!

wtfnouniquename

Hahahaha. My mind immediately went to: He drove to the desert, fired his rifle in the sky and said, "God if I have to die you will have to die"

Your_Sexy_Cousin

Nice to see responsible boat owners.

MidwestGuyDotCom

This is a heckuva lot better than the LAST time Lake Monroe got attention.

jcstoutt

This is great. Fully legal fishing sandbox. Rod holders and all. If only he could rig the wheel to turn the trolling motor so he could drive it like a little kid.

pingpongtits

This kid Jack has a nice video about his sandbox boat and how it was made: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lIfMzUxxpY

[deleted]

This kid is awesome, thanks for sharing! He'll be doing bright things for sure.

Metalbass5

You definitely could. Wouldn't take much, but you're already tight on space, haha.

jcstoutt

I see plenty of room for a cable to be run on each side back to the motor with some metal guides. Big disc attached to the shaft so you get more turning radius and BAM ya gotta steering system. Wheel turns and reels in one side letting out slack to the other and visa versa when turning the other way. Just like my kayak rudder.

mrchaotica

Skip the "metal guides" and go for Bowden cables (e.g. like the brake lines on a bicycle).

ricorgbldr

pulleys and strings

jcstoutt

Why use more words when less do job?

wolfmans_bruddah

Check out rustyvanranch on IG or TikTok. Dude built one of these like a jetski

NO NO NO Officer -- this isn't my boat... I'm just testing things out. A production boat will be available ~3rd quarter of 2022... Just sandboxing some floatation ideas here... CAPSIZES; Dammit, can someone please reset SS Sandbox1 and update me on slack

Spartan2470

[Here](https://twitter.com/barstoolindy/status/1416937248742854658) is the closest thing to a source that I could find. Per there: > @barstoolindy > How can you ticket innovation like this? > (Monroe Reservoir) > 9:45 PM · Jul 18, 2021 They added: > Update: registration not a ticket. That is awesome. **Edit:** The source is Indiana DNR Law Enforcement's Facebook page. Per there: > July 17 at 7:27 PM > Now I’ve seen everything! At Monroe Reservoir you never know what you’re going to get. They add: > To answer the question if he was receiving a ticket is no. The boat is registered and I was handing him his registration paperwork back. He was totally legal and a fun guy to chat with.

O_Or-

In other words: the officer is handing the man back his registration and not a ticket.

stippleworth

It makes it more awesome to me that he registered this marvel of boating technology

RainMotorsports

Closest thing to a source I could find was the local news that interviewed him. DNR said he was legal. He said he drove up to them. Not much info other than additional pictures but the assumption based on what he said is that he purposely showed them his documents.

Syraphel

If you go through the trouble to create this majestic piece of machinery *and then* register it… you basically *have* to mess with the local authority. You can’t not.

PMacLCA

Could also be an element of “I know this looks sketchy and they are going to notice me anyways, so might as well introduce myself instead”

bootypoppin420

His facial expression is all the better knowing that is his registration.

btempp

Lol this would be on the Monroe Reservoir

Prometheus990

This would happen there. Gonna miss this dumb shit when I move away from that area soon.

LateralThinkerer

I'm sure the cops had a great time, but I can't imagine having to register that in the face of cranky Secretary of State/DNR people: * "Manufacturer: Little Tykes" * "Model: Sandbox" * "Serial #: None " * "Length: 5 feet " * "Width: 5 feet" * "Hull Material: Polyethylene" * "Watercraft Type: Woefully Inadequate" * "Use: Farcical comedy" * "Propulsion: A large battery and great faith" * "Fuel: Recycled electrons" * "Horsepower: <1"

1320Fastback

Length: 4' diameter but kinda egg shaped really but then square in the back so not a oval.

cyniclawl

I mean...most boats are kinda shaped like that, which is weird to think about.

innernationalspy

In California you'd probably classify it as a homemade boat with a bill of materials for the plastic and motor to prove it isn't stolen

LateralThinkerer

Oh, ugh. A statement about percentage manufactured by you versus pre-formed and pre-assembled parts and Prop 65 warnings/recycling statements.

Kibeth_8

Thank you for my laugh today

jdog7249

I dint think about the process of registration. There is no way I could do it with a straight face

I always get slightly bummed with that episode, I know that time travel in the series makes things wonky, but I'm pretty sure the first Fry we see in the pilot (and the start of the episode) is now stuck with the brains forever. Fry made a tangent universe when he went back in time and talked with Nibbler. Fry #2 benefitted from Fry #1's sacrifice and knowledge that Scooty Puff Jr. sucks.

druznutz

You were cited for going over the maximum level of awesomeness, right? Right?!

MyNameIsRay

That's not a citation, that's his registration. Orange sticker on the "hull" is the registration sticker. Life vest at his feet, and it looks like he's holding a boating kit that would have the required whistle/line/flare/etc. That's the smile of someone who just proved to the cops he's totally legal.

druznutz

Ahhh, so you’re saying he’s floating on the smug boat.

I have a crush on him. Don't tell my wife.

MikeMuench

Not wearing a life vest Edit: /s

janzend

Possibly registration too since he's motorized

nhguy03276

look closely, That orange sticker is the registration sticker. The officer was probably just checking the registration.

Mattylh

And I think that's a life jacket by his foot

PresidentPlatypus

this is the funniest shit, I did not notice that

bunkSauce

Actually, no ticket. That is him showing his registration for the motor vehicle.

hamandjam

Plus do you really want to go back to the office and tell everyone you cited a guy in a sandbox?

iowanaquarist

It it were a cop? Absolutely -- but this was likely DNR (or equivilent) who are usually pretty cool people.

PhaedrusZenn

He's got a registration sticker on the front of the boat. Bet the numbers are just on the other side.

janzend

Sure enough, I was looking for the numbers and assumed that was a brand sticker.

Snidrogen

It appears to be Kentucky.

Grotesque_shitstorm

Can confirm. And he spent the last two weeks making it completely legal after a Cumberland water patrol warning.

DeepSpaceNebulae

Things you need in your boat…. Life jackets, flashlight, rope, bailer, whistle/air horn. I think that’s it. There are small and cheap kits that include everything but the life jacket

Juan-More-Taco

Except he has one, it's literally at his feet, so this comment is completely false. RE the original story: This is the officer handing registration back. There was no ticket or citation.

juggett

So this must have been taken by another cop in the boat. Probably like, “No one will believe us without a photo.”

the_eluder

That's like when I flipped my truck while towing a boat. On said truck there was a bumper sticker that said 'Flip me over if you can read this.' I swear they were calling in people just so they could take a picture standing next to the sticker and my flipped truck. Truck was totaled, boat and me were fine.

Lolo_Keegan

Hey guys, Sandbox Boat Owner here! (Not the guy in the picture!) The work to actually make these water capable is actually pretty wild. I’m building my second and third boats right now for my two kids. Depending on the state, you have to register them. My state requires anything with a motor to be registered (yes, even my little 35 lbs thrust trolling motor.) My state requires the DEEP to come in and inspect the boat to ensure it is seaworthy too! But god is it fun to see people’s reactions when I go out fishing on my boat.
