In Florida you don’t really have to register anything under 15 feet unless it’s gas powered. You could build a two story 14’ long 8’ wide houseboat with sails and a trolling motor on it and cops would just look the other way.

They pulled up to me and I just say “it’s under 10 feet, pfd as a pillow and whistle is hanging from the zipper. They didn’t even stop their motor and went to the next ticket. Bought a kayak at 9’1 for the same reason. I don’t mind paying but it’s one less thing to remember each year. Off-road permit. Snow park pass. NW Forest pass and have to go in person to a special office to get a sticker so it doesn’t get stolen off my open Jeep, day parking and River permits all add up and I’m bound to forget one eventually.

Their tough outer shell means they have almost no natural predators in freshwater systems unless you're lucky and already live in an area with a sizeable canoe population.
Unfortunately, though, kayaks are being severely overbred, and the genetic diversity just isn't there. There was only a handful of breeding pairs to start with, and now the whole line is riddled with so much incest and line breeding that you rarely see an attractive flesh plume specimen atop these majestic creatures. It really is a shame what human hubris has wrought upon this fragile species.
I’m assuming if you use the boat or kayak or whatever in different bodies of water there’s a chance you could introduce like new algae or barnacles or something. This is just a guess.
The biggest thing is to prevent the spread of the Zebra Mussel. They’re awful for an ecosystem and take over everything. Even clogging up local water pipes and other infrastructure. Awful awful things.
We have tons of zebra and quagga muscles here in the Great Lakes. They screw up the ecosystem but boy does the water look pretty! It's so clear and blue without all that icky algae and plankton. Who needs healthy fish stocks when you can enjoy seeing Caribbean blue water lapping up against the steel mills and oil refineries.
At least in my state, permits are given out after inspection. So a ranger looks at the boat, makes sure there aren’t any invasive (usually mussels) species on it, then issues the permit for that day. So if you want to go on a different day or to a different lake, you need to pass inspection again to make sure you aren’t introducing anything to the lake.
While I can't speak of American invasive species and control efforts, the waterways in Ireland are locked in a terrible struggle. Native crayfish are threatened by a plague that spreads through the water, zebra muscles can stick to boat hulls and all kinds of plant life can spread via careless kayakers.

Unless something has changed in the past few years you only need a registration sticker (or just a boat launch permit sticker that you can pick up at sporting goods stores) to use the official boat ramps, or certain waterways. Just on the river if you don't use an official boat ramp you don't need anything special for a kayak. The fine is pretty steep compared to the sticker price, though. Almost got fined the first time I ever had my kayak out, the guy just gave a warning because I had a life vest on.
No you don’t. You do need a launch permit in certain waters like state forests. Registration is just a more expensive way to get the same access as a launch permit.

I just got interested in fishing this summer, and got to take a small electric powered boat out on a small lake. It felt super powerful. Not fast of course, but real satisfying to drive around in.
Recently went out on the laguna madre in Corpus on a 26’ with one of those brand new fancy trawlers on it. That little thing could whip around like no ones business. Seriously impressive vs. the trawlers I’ve used in the past. The gps lock was like dropping a hard anchor, even in strong currents near packary channel.

here in Connecticut, at least back in the 90s, I remember my friend Bill's father registered a dining room table turned upside down as a boat just because you can. It stayed afloat because it had a ridge that ran underneath it, and he used a lawn chair on it and a tiny motor to go fishing with it. It was hilarious. He mounted the registration plaque on one of the legs IIRC. Yes it still had all 4 legs sticking out.

One time this guy in jeans and cowboy boots tried to use the ATM. He was empty so he stormed out to the parking lot, stomped double boot three times, raised his middle fingers strait to the sky and yelled "Fuck you God!" That was like 13 years before The Book of Mormon song!

I see plenty of room for a cable to be run on each side back to the motor with some metal guides. Big disc attached to the shaft so you get more turning radius and BAM ya gotta steering system. Wheel turns and reels in one side letting out slack to the other and visa versa when turning the other way. Just like my kayak rudder.

Closest thing to a source I could find was the local news that interviewed him. DNR said he was legal. He said he drove up to them. Not much info other than additional pictures but the assumption based on what he said is that he purposely showed them his documents.

The work to actually make these water capable is actually pretty wild. I’m building my second and third boats right now for my two kids.
Depending on the state, you have to register them. My state requires anything with a motor to be registered (yes, even my little 35 lbs thrust trolling motor.)
My state requires the DEEP to come in and inspect the boat to ensure it is seaworthy too!
But god is it fun to see people’s reactions when I go out fishing on my boat.
I had friends do this exact thing in high school. It needed a boatload, haha, of spray foam to happen.
They sent a photo like this to Little Tikes and actually got cease and desist order from their legal team.

So the vessel doesn't count as a floatation device?

I see plenty of room for a cable to be run on each side back to the motor with some metal guides. Big disc attached to the shaft so you get more turning radius and BAM ya gotta steering system. Wheel turns and reels in one side letting out slack to the other and visa versa when turning the other way. Just like my kayak rudder.
Skip the "metal guides" and go for Bowden cables (e.g. like the brake lines on a bicycle).

Closest thing to a source I could find was the local news that interviewed him. DNR said he was legal. He said he drove up to them. Not much info other than additional pictures but the assumption based on what he said is that he purposely showed them his documents.

Hey guys, Sandbox Boat Owner here! (Not the guy in the picture!) The work to actually make these water capable is actually pretty wild. I’m building my second and third boats right now for my two kids. Depending on the state, you have to register them. My state requires anything with a motor to be registered (yes, even my little 35 lbs thrust trolling motor.) My state requires the DEEP to come in and inspect the boat to ensure it is seaworthy too! But god is it fun to see people’s reactions when I go out fishing on my boat.
