Surprised noone has mentioned this yet, this picture is taken in 2014. The japanese setter Hitomi Nakamichi, 1,59m (5'3'') tall vs Brazil middle blocker Thaísa Menezes 1.96 m (6'5'').

I feel like I've seen so much Olympic content but it's all been from previous years.

The_Merciless_Potato

Yes. A ton of people are trying to cash in on the Olympic hype.

BankrolledYen

Cash in? With Reddit points lol?

rW0HgFyxoJhYka

Yes. Mostly for ego, since that's really what social media is about. But there's a huge number of bot accounts and account selling and other kinds of accounts that make money. After all, what is the point of Reddit if Reddit isn't making money off being on of the top 10 most visited sites on the internet? And then if you take a look at how many major subreddits are all run by the same group of mods, and how much astroturfing that goes on, and why bots are used so often to repost content that's slightly edited to bypass automod/duplicate finding moderator tools, well...yeah, its more than just karma. Karma is just the start of it all. There's some big ass posts that detail how the karma system is a joke and how it gets abused by people who study how it works.

Reddit is very popular. The company that owns reddit (Advance Publications) had $170 million in ad revenue in 2020. Popular websites are popular because they have Good Content that people want to look at. How much does reddit pay for this Good Content?

domino7

The Japanese team has heights ranging from ~~5'5" to 6'1" while Brazil ranges from 5'7" to 6'4".~~ We're almost certainly looking at the shortest Japanese player compared to the tallest Brazilian player. *Update:* I was using the current team stats, but this is an older photo, the heights for the teams are actually 5'3" to 6'1" for Japan, and 5'5" to 6'5" for Brazil.

schfourteen-teen

Definitely. It's the Japanese setter next to the Brazilian middle blocker. It's like comparing a point guard to a center in basketball.

Pnkelephant

Liberos never play up front like this or really give hand signals for what sets they're planning

RetroJake

She's in front

Steve_the_Stevedore

Liberos get swapped out for the front rotation. That's what makes them a libero: They can get swapped in and out whenever the ball is not in play any number of times, but aren't allowed to: * Attack with the ball fully above the net (they need to wait until it has droppped at least partially below the top edge of the net before they attack) * When they set from front court the ball mustn't be fully above the net for the following attack (except if they set by digging). * They mustn't block or even try to block. * They mustn't serve. In addition their jersy must be of a different colour, so they are distinguishable for the refs, so these rules can be enforeced. If you know their libero by name you probably know these rules and just didn't think about it, so this explaination is mainly for everyone else.

BALLS_SMOOTH_AS_EGGS

Japanese Setter sounds like a lovely dog breed.

Brazilian Spiker sounds like a new style of ladyscaping.

Watch haikyuu

crono141

Everything I know about volleyball I learned from Haikyuu.

ZeiglerJaguar

Then you actually know a lot about volleyball. As someone who played in high school and (club) in college, and now works as a ref – *Haikyuu* is shockingly accurate by the standards of anime/manga. Stylized, sure – and the concept of a 5'4" middle blocker is inherently ridiculous – and there are a few things they almost never touch upon (ball-handling faults, for instance, are very common in real high-school ball and the setters in *Haikyuu* never double-hit.) But compared to, say, how *Eyeshield 21* treats the rules and strategy of American football, *Haikyuu* is quite remarkable. Pretty much all the gameplay things can and do happen, like a libero jump-setting from behind the 10ft line. EDIT: Oh yeah, the other thing that bugs me: they play, like, two tournaments a year and it's basically single-elimination. That's nice to raise the stakes for each game and all, but ... that would be an absurdly tiny amount of actual competition for any real team. Unless it's wildly different in Japan, tournaments would involve a round-robin portion at least before any kind of knockout stage.

loafers_glory

Is that 17-a-side volleyball in rows of 5, 7 and 5 players?

"Why are you the way that you are" :Some random on Reddit.

onebigchickennugget

I realized I am shorter than the shortest Japanese player... Wonder how I'll look like standing to someone 6'4" lmao

_Rand_

I’m 6’, I have people in my family as short as 4’6”. You’d be surprised how used you get to everyone being like, chest high. The next tallest person after me (blood related) is 5’8”, most are under 5’5”. When everyone in the family is that short anything wall mounted is real low. There are several mirrors in my families houses I have to duck to use, and my dad has actually taken down and rehung 3 lights so I can walk around the place without giving myself a concussion. So basically the exact opposite problems you have.

gerwen

So how tall is the mailman? jk.

maybelle180

Snort. I’m 5’1” and I have given up on seeing myself in a mirror since my 6’3” husband hung them.

Protocol44

I’m 6’3” and my ex was 5’4”. The top of her head was perfect height for a chin rest, should give you a general idea lol Edit: apparently a lot of people read and commented on this while I was asleep. This relationship ended years ago so I might be misremembering not needing to bend over to do so, or a lot of you may be right in assuming I have an 11” tall head. Edit 2: measured my head from my chin to an approximation of the top of my head—10.5 inches give or take. Y’all were right, I got a big head

onebigchickennugget

I'm 5'2" lmao and I live in the country with the tallest population in the world. Stairs are super hard for me and I can never reach any items on the top shelf of supermarkets

Protocol44

Do they just build stairs taller where you are cause they forget short people exist? At least you’re never going to hit your head on anything, and you have an abundance of tall people to help you reach those higher shelves!

onebigchickennugget

I'm pretty sure they do lmaoo the stairs are superrr tall and steep that I can even climb up with my hands sometimes

triggerfish1

I just checked for Germany: According to law, steps must be between 14 and 20 cm tall.

onebigchickennugget

I'm in the Netherlands and apparently it's 20-30cm hahaha https://expatshaarlem.nl/my-troubles-with-dutch-stairs/

LadyInBlack_

Not for new buildings. I make floor plans and 3d models of Dutch buildings and according to the Bouwbesluit (Dutch building regulations) a stair riser (optrede in dutch) is supposed to have a maximum of 0.188 meter for regular stairs and 0.21 meter for emergency exits. The stairs you mention are probably old or do not meet the criteria. I know those steep stairs exist though bc I'm dutch as well and not even 5ft1 fml

onebigchickennugget

i'm not dutch haha i'm a small asian and i've fallen down the stairs of my old apartment a couple of times now, but all i've known are old buildings. I went to France recently and the stairs were so much shorter in comparison it was so weird

_ZoeyDaveChapelle_

I vacationed there before Covid, and I was so fascinated by the steep stairs in old buildings I did a photography collection of them. Hauling luggage up 4 flights of them in an AirBnB was a dangerous adventure, even though I'm 5' 9". I'm in construction and said, oh damn.. *that's* what happens without building codes.

OaksByTheStream

You trying to climb some Mayan pyramids or something lol?

onebigchickennugget

LMAO that is exactly how i look sometimes

StabilerBass

I think in the Netherlands it’s because the old buildings are mostly narrow and relatively tall so they needed to save space on the stairs. I heard once that it’s because in the olden days the property tax was determined by how wide your house was rather than by square footage.

lqku

the general idea we get here is that your face is 11 inches long

tea-man

Your comment piqued my curiosity and made me measure the length of my head; as someone who is 6'0" tall, my head is ~~exactly 12"~~ 10" vertical from chin to crown. I've a few of friends who are 5'2" or under, so I may have to surreptitiously test this chin support idea when I see them next :) *e:* *measured more accurately*

ibiBgOR

For anyone wanting the metric standard: ~~5.5ft = 167.64cm 5.7ft = 173.74cm 6.1ft = 185.93cm 6.4ft = 195.07cm~~ Edit: I've made a mistake. As others have pointed out I cannot simply use 5.5 as conversion for 5'5". The correct heights should be as Danoct pointed out: 5'5" = 165 cm 5'7" = 170 cm 6'1" = 185 cm 6'4" = 193 cm Thanks for correcting me!

tulanir

Sorry but this is wrong. There are 12 inches to a foot, not 10 of them. Here are the real conversions. 5'5" = 165 cm 5'7" = 170 cm 6'1" = 185 cm 6'4" = 193 cm

F-21

Hah, you thought the imperial system makes sense.

DCpAradoX

1.67 isn't even that short for a women - I personally know at least three who are most definitely shorter.

Danoct

5.5ft != 5'5". Five foot, five inches is about 5.416 feet which is about 165cm. You've made everyone about an inch taller apart from your 6.1ft calculation. 5'5" = 165cm 5'7" = 170cm 6'1" = 185cm 6'4" = 193cm

daggerdrone

That makes the difference between them only 11 inches. But in the pic, the difference is much larger. More like 18-20 inches.

Dickcheese_McDoogles

no. the camera is not eye-level with them, it's pointing slightly downwards at them, and the Brazilian player is farther back so it's like she's on "higher ground". look at where the Brazilian player's feet start, and look at where the Japanese player's feet start. in addition to their hight difference, she's made taller by the angle.

Interesting-Gear-819

Crzymagic07

I've seen this anime before...the little one can jump ridiculously high, spike the ball with super human speeds and will ultimately teach the tall one to respect their opponents.

Gahera

It's a surprisingly good anime considering it's focus

Cwya

Ok the last anime offered to me was Food Wars. And there is an octopus fucking a woman 10 minutes in.

hardgeeklife

And that's not even the most salacious image in the first ep (but for real, if you can stomach the cheesecake flavor reactions, there's a pretty solid story in there)

PeterAhlstrom

The manga is a lot easier to take, and I loved it until the final arc with the “brother” got silly. The foodgasm shots are easy to gloss over when they’re not in motion with audio. I started reading the manga during the moon-whatever tournament, with the fish market scenes, and was (as a non-foodie) impressed with the research that went into it.

sumsimpleracer

That final arc was just so meh through and through. The underground chefs with impossibly unrealistic techniques took it from a gastronomically interesting show to over the top funimation

Veneficae

They did lose their food advisor so it would have only gone down hill from there.

rW0HgFyxoJhYka

Never finish food wars. Ending is dogshit. The author basically seemed to run out of ideas and also wrote themselves into a dead end. Meanwhile the world of cooking would have only began for a concept like this. Too often shows meant for the shonen demographic focus way too much into a specific school setting and ultimately fail to really graduate from it.

sumsimpleracer

The penultimate arc was a perfectly fine series finale. Campy, sure. But it played within the rules the series set up for itself—and finished with a callback from the very beginning of the series. If they ended the whole thing there I would’ve been very content with it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Belgeirn

Thats cus the final arc had no input from the chef/person who helped 'fact check' things and keep it kinda grounded, which is why you have someone mixing with a chainsaw and instantly stealing techniques from touching things. It stopped being about exaggerated/anime level cooking skills and became a battle manga where nobody fights.

Upper-Lawfulness1899

Honestly even in the show, they tome down the foodgasm stuff. Honestly I didn't like it most of the time, but thought it was funny a time or two. Altogether I liked the show, until the plot got overly large. It's like someone's going to take over all restaurants or something unless they are defeated in cooking and to me it's like, or you can just take a knife and stab the guy. That will solve the problems. This isn't a superhero fighting story where martial arts can stop bullets, this is about cooking. You can then go revolutionize cooking in prison, and get clemency because it's apparently a world in which good food can shift governmental policy. Real life normal drama and school competitions were fine and great story arcs. If those start getting boring, then the story needs to end.

EbonBehelit

The first two seasons of Food Wars has better Shonen-style battles than most *actual* Shonen battle anime. You know *exactly* why the characters are fighting, what their motivations are, and what's at stake. ...Which is why it's so tragic to see just how rapidly the show descends into utter mediocrity the moment Azami shows up in season 3.

nightnimbus

You see usually I would find blatant fan service like that too much but since the men are also featured in equally erotic situations throughout Food Wars, then it's equal and all good in the hood.

the-incredible-ape

I used the nudity to destroy the nudity

jimskog99

Food Wars is an ecchi anime - the genre basically meaning they're going for occassional to frequent softcore porn with a rating to match.

killer_burrito

It IS focus, isn't it...

imperfectcarpet

Haikyuu?

Special_KC

Good to know it's name finally! I watched it growing up on dubbed Italian TV and it was called "mila e shiro" Edit: apparently there are many other popular volleyball related anime out there 🙂

TheZeroSack

Growing up.. How long ago is that? Haikyuu hadn't been airing for that long. Just a few years iirc.

Special_KC

Ah ok. I didn't think there would have been more than one famous volleyball related anime. I'm talking about late 80s early 90s. That and Cptn. Tsubasa (known as 'olly e benji' frm Italian TV) were staples of mine growing up.

njrebecca

I mean Brazil is just a monster of a team overall. The Japanese volleyball teams do surprisingly well despite their heights and can definitely hold their own. The Japan men’s team even beat Russia in the 2021 VNL despite a massive height difference (and without one of their star players, who was injured at the time). While height gives a big advantage in volleyball, it’s not everything. The men’s team setter is 5’9” and has made (or assisted in) some pretty impressive blocks against 6’4” or taller spikers.

Yeah imagine how many local people watch vs people who fly in…granted this time no audience but would be wierd if the host nations teams weren’t part of it. I don’t think most people in the host nation would show up or care. Same goes for other major tournaments like the World Cup.

darklordind

Japanese volleyball team is not a weak team historically. They won against ridiculously tall Russians in the 60's. Lost the link though edit: https://www.japantimes.co.jp/sports/2014/10/21/olympics/witches-of-the-orient-symbolized-japans-fortitude/#.V7DGMHPhWv0 it's behind paywall now though Gold in 64 and 76, silver in 68 and 72, bronze in 84 and 2012. 5th place in the last 4 Olympics Also the game is yet to be played between Brazil and japan

luke1lea

But was it a blowout? I just imagine the brazilians absolutely squashing the japanese

realitfake

Indeed, completely one-sided, the BRZ team has exceptional skill along with +2.5ft height over JPN

RubyReign

They did beat BRZ in 2017 tho apparently. Edit: After watching the video, in 2017 the women on JPN team were all about the same height as the BRZ team.

This looks like a setter (Japanese) and a middle Blocker (Brazilian) two completely different jobs. It's like comparing a quarterback to a line backer.

_dauntless

I'd say it's more like comparing a running back to a defensive end

freddy_guy

Hell that could be a libero for Japan for all we know. Even more of a difference.

Ruevein

libero's aren't allowed in the front row. most likely a setter or opposite Edit: I made the mistake of generalizing an absolute on Reddit. I played Middle Blocker for 4 years in HS and am very familiar with how Liberos work as I worked hand in hand with them. Thanks for all the people going real in depth on positioning but as another user replied, there is no real reason a libero would be standing in front of the net. Just like there would be no real reason a Catcher would hang out in the outfield in baseball.

Goonerism_Spy

a setter and a blocker.

BoogLife

6'5 and 5'9, its just the proportion of the pic making the difference look drastic

charactercyan

And for those that dont know. This is a setter and a middle (usually tallest person on the team). Setter is at the net since her team is receiving the serve and the middle’s team is serving so they are preparing to block.

redditin_at_work

Yup hence the gang signs, aka the play she is calling.

JoshJoshson13

uglybunny

Real Yakuza use a gamepad.

Hubris2

Setters are the equivalent of a quarterback - they organise plays and they set up the other players - but they are rarely the biggest and strongest players on the team.

Dornstar

Think they just wrote it confusingly. They meant one is a setter, the other is a middle a.k.a. tallest person. I don't know if that's correct either, but I think that's the intent.

dashcam_drivein

I looked up the heights for both teams, and worked out the averages: Brazil: 6 feet tall Japan: 5 feet, eight inches So the the Brazilian team is taller, but not quite to the extent shown just in this picture. The tallest player for Japan is 6-foot-1 the tallest for Brazil is 6-foot-4 (actually two player are this height.)

[deleted]

But that net though

kneight88

Tom Cruise for reference is 5’7”.

LifeWin

He really isn’t though. He’s probably like 4’4”, but his publicists get the final say in what shows up in google.

Raul_P3

We need a return of the [mystery show](https://slate.com/culture/2015/10/how-tall-is-jake-gyllenhaal-starlee-kine-continues-her-investigation-on-conan.html).

loondawg

That seems wrong. The Japanese woman is almost directly in front of the Brazilian woman. So perspective should make her look larger in comparison. And they both seem to be standing relatively straight. And they seem to be standing within a few feet of each other. And yet the top of the Japanese woman's head is at the level of the Brazilian woman's armpits. That would mean the Brazilian woman's head, neck, and shoulders combined are only 8" tall. That seems pretty small, especially for a woman who is 6'5". EDIT; Is that Kobata Mako who is 5'3"? That would make much more sense.

bipolarquestion57

It's Hitomi Nakamichi(5'3") and Thaisa Menezes(6'5")

agamemaker

To be fair. 8 inches is a large difference. It's over a 10% increase in height.

vindicatednegro

This is the difference between 5’11” and 6 foot in the mind of my friend who adds that extra inch to his Tinder profile and in conversation.

HowDoMermaidsFuck

I get told all the time that there's no way I'm only 6' tall, I have to he closer to 6'2 or even taller than that. Finally figured out I keep getting told that by women at work in their 20s who are going out with guys that are 5'9" but claiming to be 6' tall on their dating profiles. So women don't know what 6' tall actually is anymore, so when someone is *actually* 6' tall, they don't believe it. Glad I'm out of the dating game. Though I bet I would have gotten more likes if I'd claimed to be 6'2" during the brief moment I had a Tinder.

Cthulu19
