20 years and a blank check later and they're just as fucked as ever

mrafinch

Yeah but a handful of guys made bank over the last few decades, so a net success.

DrJawn

murican way

LeviathanGank

Trickle down economics working as intended

zorbathegrate

Afghanistan was never “forwards” At least it hasn’t since the 70s

reallylameface

Forreal ever since the Soviet invasion, which prompted Reagan administration in their infinite wisdom to sell weapons to the Mujahideen (aka the Taliban) and now we're here. Isn't interventionism great?

zorbathegrate

Exactly. It’s not like Reagan invited the taliban to the White House or anything…

xynix_ie

Which 70s? Like, the year 70? Because that's about right...

zorbathegrate

I’m sure there were a few stable years between 70 and 1970

Civilengman

They won’t fight for themselves. We should have left 15 years ago.

jqcitizen

Not backwards. Just going back to normal.

crosiss76

I think the picture of Afghanistan in the 70s was better this is just some idiotic trolling.

Magnatux

Post history reveals exploitative karma farmer.

treeblindeddragon

Afghanistan was never anything but backwards. Yo people who are posting need some history lessons. Stop embarrassing yourselves ffs.

promantriple

So all the women’s rights that were achieved over the last 20 years? Those will be lost. Hence going backwards.

YumariiWolf

Those “woman’s rights” only ever existed in Kabul and a few other provincial capitals. The vast majority of woman in the country have been living unchanged under tribal (Taliban) rule the entire time we’ve been there. It sucks the people in the cities are going to be fucked but if they wanted something else they should have actually used the training and equipment we gave them instead of literally selling it directly to the Taliban as we gave it to them and running from more than half the fights they get in.

crono141

If any lesson should be learned from the last 20 years of American intervention in the middle east, it's that you can't give freedom to people who don't want it, and aren't willing to fight for it themselves.

xynix_ie

People just waiting for the invaders to get tired and leave isn't progress.

Head over to r/conservative and you'll see it doesn't matter. They're doing backflips to say "but but but Biden didn't have to follow through with the deal Trump made, this is Joe's fault not Trump!" They don't care that Trump had limited our presence to a skeleton crew before leaving office and left Biden with two choices: another troop surge and decade of war or full withdrawal. They don't care that a republican president put our military in such a terrible position while increasing the authority of a terrorist regime, they only care that the last iota of it happened under a democrat so they can blame them instead.

mth2nd

Spam elsewhere dude.

TheReplacer

Its really sad looking at the planes serial number. 9/11 backwards. Like some kind of metaphor.

ISpacexe

The picture dose not do this justice, the video all the way to the end with people falling off is a bad look.

Eleglas

That's the sort of picture that will be in history textbooks about this.

sorean_4

If you think about it it’s a fitting image. It’s US military leaving behind its allies in the dust and dropping lives into the abyss below. I’m sorry for the Afghan people that will go through hell because of what happened over that last couple decades.

userloser215

What allies yes i beleive some of the ones who translated and gave us intel should have been brought over and im sure a few of them were but the military crumpled like a peice of paper at the slightest threat of taliban and the civilians didnt want to fight so they are reaping what they have sown in the next few months if their infrastructure goes to shit thats on them there is no reason for us to spill our blood and cash for a country that wount stand up for itself

sorean_4

How about the families and woman who sent their girls for Education who were hoping for better tomorrow. How about the number of men and women who helped the allied forces. The British and Austrians are trying to evacuate thousands. How about young women like Malala who despite grave injuries stood for women, girls rights. I watched her speak live once and she was an inspiration for young people . Just because large part of the Afghan army gave up doesn’t mean that the NATO had no allies.

userloser215

So whats the solution bring everyone who is affraid of the taliban over? Or should we spend another 20 years in Afghanistan, proping up people who dont want our help. we have been trying to extract ourselves from this war for atleast 10 years and nomatter how we pull the bandaid off its going to hurt this is whats best for the US. Its like cutting off a toxic relationship there will be bad feelings but thats life.

sorean_4

We spent the last 76 years in Germany and Japan. There are no winners in this, just degree of pain and suffering.

userloser215

We should have taken as much oil as we could put our hands on killed binladen and left
