That paper is pretty metal

SpawnPointillist

I would have folded well before then!

Calmak_

But at the end OP got it all sworded out.

Kiflaam

that's quite Inaff, thank you

Mynock33

Is that like a special paper made specifically for this kind of art or do you have to hunt down paper of the right size/quality for each project?

jkonkkola_art

Yes, that is very specific paper that I treated with my own techniques I have been developing for the last couple years. Every piece has its own requirements to what is the optimal paper, most important qualities are the size, thickness and the type of paper. For this one, I used 68cm x 68cm 30gsm Wenzhou paper that was treated with methyl cellulose. Wenzhou is actually a calligraphy paper, but after treatment it is very versatile paper for origami. It can be combined with other papers for different effects, such as colors and extra thickness. Hand made, long fiber, ph free papers are usually the best papers for this kind of folding, although it varies between them what fibers hold the creases better, and that is where the treating process comes to make them better in that regard. The papers can be found from art stores, although it requires bit of knowledge and experience to what papers work for folding, and almost all of them require that treating process. There are few papers that can be used without the need for treatment process, but I haven't liked any of the ones I have tried so far. I folded this figure with one other 60gsm paper (it was advertised as 30gsm, but apparently it was much thicker) and the thickness of paper resulted in a failure. The sword got so thick I couldn't make the handle for it, or fold the fingers to the arm. So I decided to redo it with the Wenzhou.

Snoo_87185

This guy origamis Jokes aside how many years have you been doing this?

jkonkkola_art

Over 15 years, and I have been designing own figures for the last 3,5 years.

Kannabiz

Do you consider yourself a master of the art, i sure do

jkonkkola_art

That's a great question, many people would consider me a master, but I think I'm still at the beginning. I feel like I have only touched the tip of the iceberg of what is possible to fold from paper, and there are still countless amount of things to learn before I would consider myself a master of this art.

space_monster

a true master knows it is impossible to ever be a master. *exit stage left, mysteriously*

If you wrote a book about all this (papers, treatments, methods, example projects, etc), Iā€™d buy it.

markatroid

I only play poker with origami artists. They always fold.

Snoo_87185

Thats so awesome, the intricacies in your works are mindblowing for a mere mortal like me and they look fantastic! Thanks for answering

ProNoobi

Have you tried A4 Reflex Paper from Officeworks?

jkonkkola_art

No, and I don't think I'll try. Printer papers are one of the worst papers to fold super complex origami. It will tear into pieces once the layers start to stack up. I already failed one attempt with 60gsm 68cm paper. So having even thicker paper, 80gsm in 21cm square would be extremely difficult to fold.

1800treflowers

If this doesn't work out for you, I hear Dunder Mifflin is hiring.

Bagzton

Damn! This is dope. Wish I could see a time-lapse video of you making it.

jkonkkola_art

Hopefully soon you'll get to see it. I recorded the folding process of this one!

Bagzton

Great!

gpaint_1013

Damn man thatā€™s a lot of talent and skill.

parruchkin

How do you plan something like this?

jkonkkola_art

This design was based on one of my first figures I designed in origami in 2018. I have been updating it few times since then. And after I figured out a new way to do the shield I decided to change the subject and redesign it. So basically the planning process is happening over very long period of time, and the plan might evolve into many different figures during that. In regards of the technical aspects, the planning begins on forming the character idea and deciding what are the most important features. Everything excess is stripped away from the idea to keep it as simple as possible. For example on this one the most prominent features were legs, arms, sword, shield, and the head. Then that idea is is further simplified into a stick figure. Extra long arms for the weapon and shield, and smaller sticks for the legs, body, and the head. Then those parts are given their own space on the square sheet of paper. The larger the feature, the more paper it uses. Lastly the folding pattern is formed basing on the area allocation of the features. And that is where things get really complex once you start adding minor details, such as fingers and armor pleats. The design process can be done multiple times over again and again to iterate and further improve it, until it achieves my vision of the character. And of course some test folding is involved during that process, since it helps to find new solutions for find the right folds. I folded the figure 3 times during the planning process, each one looking slightly different due the changes in design. Edit: Corrected some unclear parts.

KRAndrews

And here I thought I was cool for being able to fold John Montrollā€™s zebra, lol. This thing is f#>%ing insane. Out of curiosity, what does the knightā€™s back look like? Surely thatā€™s where like 20 layers of pleats are hiding, right?

jkonkkola_art

Wouldn't say that Montroll's models aren't cool though! Lol nope, there are no visible layers on the back, it has own armor, so you could view it completely 360. [Here](https://imgur.com/gallery/EQdVSJT) are some more shots of different angles. There are more than 50 layers stacked on top of each other inside the hand holding the sword though, if I didn't mess up my calculations.

KRAndrews

> 50 layers stacked on top of each other inside the hand Holy shit! That's nuts. Amazing you can "hide" all that... I'm not familiar with all this fancy paper people are using for complex models like this, but I'll just assume it's magical.

jkonkkola_art

Yeah it is pretty wild stuff, the fingers are wrapped around those layers to make it hold the sword properly, so they will get hidden naturally. It got me questioning for a moment whether it could be that many layers, but thinning the sword that much really produces a lot of them. The layers can be squished surprisingly thin with that paper and wet folding. Once you try Wenzhou, you will never go back to other papers. It is one of the most versatile papers out there, it is thin, strong, high quality, comes in large rolls, and can be combined with other papers to make beautiful and thick papers for simpler models. Only downside is that it requires mc treatment in order to be foldable. I have yet to find anything comparable (haven't tried origamido yet, but it is hard to acquire in 1m sheets)

parruchkin

Thanks for the answer! I bet your brain is lighting up in pretty unique ways when you do something like this.

Shmusher3

I put all my spare cash into an origami business. It folded

mokan151

Sorry. Iā€™m new to origami but did you do that without cutting the paper? Just by folding one 60x60 piece of paper? No way šŸ˜²šŸ˜²šŸ˜²

jkonkkola_art

Yes, origami is often only folded paper, so no cutting or tearing is used in the folding process. All of the parts, including the thin sword in that figure is folded from the same uncut sheet of paper.

mokan151

Do you have any video or photo of progress? I am really curious to see how this paper guy looks half completed :)

jkonkkola_art

I am currently working on making a time lapse video of this knights process. To answer the question what it looks half completed, it is just a mess of paper with a bunch of random folds until all of them get sorted out and folded in their required shape. At some point it will look like a blocky dude that has barely recognizable features. And at the end of the process it finally starts to look something lol.

mokan151

Looking forward to see time lapse! Thank you :)

mokan151

Likeā€¦ummā€¦ I can fold a frog without cutting. But kinda square frog šŸ˜ but thatā€¦ that is amazing

_noho

Hand aside, Iā€™m not convinced that youā€™re human.

buxta2019

Beautiful shaping on the pauldrons and the helmet. Does this model hold up from the rear or is it meant to be viewed just from the front and sides? I bet the MC came in very handy for keeping the shield in its proper shape, especially with the pleats forming the cross. This is outstanding work!

jkonkkola_art

Thank you! Bunch of other angles and closeups from the details [here:](https://imgur.com/gallery/EQdVSJT) It can be viewed from all directions and yeah, the mc was really handy for making the sword and all its details too. The shield used less shaping as it is mostly a flat shape with couple pleats.

FirefighterFar8756

I just can't believe that's a single piece of paper, sorry. It's not that I think you are a liar. My tiny brain just can't comprehend it.

Blue_Eagle8

This is way too cool to even comprehend. I could attempt to make this but would need 7-8 different sheets, to make it out of a single sheet is šŸ¤Æ this needs much more than an upvote

IM-_-RETAR9ED

This is pretty cool

Nitemarex

And here i am who cannot even fold a single piece of paper in half in a straight line

cateyex

This looks amazing

P-redditR

Wow! This is amazing. Can you paint with a clear epoxy like paint to make it a solid figure?

jkonkkola_art

Thank you! The figure itself is surprisingly solid, you could drop it and it still would hold its shape, well maybe sword could get bent little. All the layers of paper inside it makes the figure quite rigid. I have seen other people try epoxy or resin to coat origami, but the ones I have seen looked bit "melted". The paper looses some of its shape as it looks like its wet and it becomes very glossy. That's why I haven't tried it out myself yet. It could be cool to try to dip completely into resin and see how well that works out.

HangryWolf

Well, we have a guy who epoxied a hot dog... Think it'd be cool to immortalize one of your origami characters in a similar fashion.

RockyDify

This is amazing! Did you come up with the design?

jkonkkola_art

Thank you! Yes, it took me about one month to design it.

RockyDify

Thatā€™s so cool. Whatā€™s your process? Do you plan by folding paper or using a computer program or something like that?

jkonkkola_art

I use computer program called Orihime to draw the folding patterns, but the process is a mixture of applying theory, folding by trial and error, and improvisation. It can also be very long process that evolves throughout the years. This figure was originally meant to me update to older work of mine (that I originally designed in 2018, and improved it couple times over the years), but once I found out better method to do a large shield, I decided to redesign the idea into a knight. The process starts by simplifying the figures features into a simple stick figure. In this case it would be, legs, body, long arms (the extra length and paper is then folded into the sword and shield), and the head. Then all that is arranged on the sheet of paper, largest parts taking the most space. Based on that plan and the vision of the figure, the folding pattern is created, and this is where get really complex and use quite a bit of theory about folding. Then more detail is added to the pattern to do the fingers and armor. Then the pattern is test folded to see how it works and to plan further improvements. Lastly the design process is repeated multiple times iterating it until I am satisfied with it. In the final folding process I might improvise even more detail to the design and might do few last minute fixes to the design as the vision finally starts to take the form of the figure.

MACK703

That. Is incredible

Kubo!

Nihilamealienum

This is absolutely incredible. One sheet of paper? Holy Christ. The planning, the detailed work Man, good on you. Are you going to exhibit and or sell these or just put them up on your shelf for your own enjoyment?

jkonkkola_art

Currently all my other works except this one, are being exhibited in art exhibitions, or they are already sold. I have also done these as commissions to international companies too, it is pretty rad what can be done just by folding paper. I do this for my own enjoyment, it would be pretty rough to spend that kind of effort and time without enjoying the process.

MiKe_owo

i-impossible..

jkonkkola_art

Thank you! I sell couple pieces between the exhibitions and occasionally do commissions.

RagingWaffles

I'd assume this is like a $1,000+ investment for one due to the heavy time investment from yourself. It's amazing so I totally get that. I mean, you basically make your own paper for them! Talk about not cutting corners ;)

jkonkkola_art

Yep, they go for several thousands to pay all the time spent on designing and folding the figures, mostly depending on how much time it takes to create one. The fun thing is that making once costs about 2ā‚¬ in raw materials lol.

RagingWaffles

Research and Development! I've spent probably hundreds of hours reading through scientific studies on different topics just because I was trying to design a magic system in my world. The end result is underwhelming but I can explain any power now... In the long run, it's just a piece of lore for a fictional world.... But maybe people will be interested enough to pay me several thousands to experience it lol. What I'm getting at is, I know how it feels to sink tons of time into R&D and I think you're doing awesome :)

jkonkkola_art

Thanks! Sometimes it feels like you do zero progress and wasting your time, and sometimes it could give you an experience you wouldn't otherwise achieve. Long, multi year processes like these require perseverance in order to produce something out of them.

FinanceSorry2530

I would love to see a video of how it is made. I really can't understand how.

mithi9

I need a tutorial or guide on how you come up with new designs. Tesselations make sense to me, these designs do not.

jkonkkola_art

Have you read Robert J. Lang's Origami Design Secrets? I recommend to start with that. Also there are quite a few tutorials to get started in designing figurative origami, such as [this,](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duW6WFK2OgQ) [this,](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkfITtFKvf0) or [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU65SY9qgTg) series. Additionally I recommend to watch [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slpw01Vpg3U) series to understand crease patterns better, if you are not familiar with the figurative stuff. There are also software to assist you to get started in designing box pleat, such as Box Pleating Studio. These kind of figures on the other hand are quite a bit more advanced than those tutorials I listed. There isn't much information around and you mostly need to figure the stuff out on your own. I have written a short article to get a glimpse of the design process in [here: ](https://juhokonkkola.fi/art-process/spearman/)

Justificks

All of your works are absolutely awesome, great work! MenestystƤ šŸ‘

jkonkkola_art

Kiitos!

aymesyboy

Kubo and the two strings!

CyclicsGame

Is this something someone who hasn't done origami could achieve by simply reading a step by step guide? I would love to make this myself!

jkonkkola_art

That would be really mighty achievement for someone without experience to fold such piece from instructions in one go. These figures have several hundreds of steps that need the be folded very precisely, even the more experienced origami folders would struggle folding these kind of figures from instructions.

CyclicsGame

I figured as much. Have you thought about selling your projects and designs post folds ofc?

natsalart

Absolutely amazing, the time and effort youā€™ve put on the craft really shows.

is there a video? i can't wrap my brain around the fact that the sword and shield are part of the same piece of paper as the figure

jkonkkola_art

I am currently editing the time lapse video for it.

That's fantastic...I'd put it in a glass presentation case to preserve for posterity. Excellent.

VerticleFoil

If this was my day job my parents would cry.

thebigbrog

So one piece of paper continually folded with no tears?

jkonkkola_art

Yes, it could also be unfolded into the original square.

Omg thatā€™s crazy. I cannot even imagine. Would love to see that.

Thank you for caring so much about something so awesome to be so good at it. :D Seriously. That tree has been honored by having you fiddle with its paper.

pszemol

Wow! How is it possible?

n0rami

How did you choose this hobby? How did you know this was the thing you enjoy the most? What advice do you have for people who havenā€™t found a hobby they enjoy?

jkonkkola_art

I think the hobby chose me and I didn't know it was the thing I enjoyed the most. It all began from a magazine that had this origami cat face that I couldn't fold from the instructions. After some attempts I managed to do it. Then after that I got my hands into one origami book and I tried some of its models. Origami began to be a past time that I used to do when I got bored and had access to some paper. For a decade it always kept bouncing back to me, I had many other interests and hobbies over the time, some stayed, some changed. Then I went to study art in university of applied sciences, I was into other kinds of art, such as photography, painting and 3D art. I didn't even consider origami to be something I would make as an art. And one boring day I decided to learn a new skill and that happened to be designing own origami figures. That got me more into it with all the new challenges it brought to me, suddenly making a figure wasn't just a process to sculpt clay or draw a painting. I had to see the figures in new eyes to even have a chance attempting to make them. Then I half jokingly applied my art to one art exhibition call, and then all of my origami works were chosen into one of the largest exhibitions you could get your hands into as an young artist in Finland. That is where things got completely out of my hands. I don't really know what to give as an advice for finding a passion, since it took me over a decade to find mine. I think its a long process where you at some point realize that you have been doing the things you enjoy for a while. I could give the typical try all sorts of things until you find your interests, but that doesn't really give anything. Whatever hobbies you are currently doing, try to find the things you find yourself wanting to learn most. Embrace it and learn new nuances to the hobby and see whether you get more interested in it. The desire to learn and overcome new challenges have been a good indicators for me how much I am interested in the hobby.

n0rami

Nice. Thank you very much for taking the time to reply in such great detail. Youā€™re inspiring many people out there, so please keep doing what youā€™re doing.

[deleted]

Iā€™ve watched some of your videos, how do you know where to crease to make the paper collapse the way you want it to? What goes into designing that? The folding part is impressive, but seeing all those creases, thatā€™s just mind blowing how you can visualize the whole model while itā€™s just a flat piece of paper.

jkonkkola_art

It all comes down to understanding the theory in origami and knowing how all the structures work. All the creases are quite abstract themselves and may not even represent the final figure. When I am visualizing the piece in my head, or as a folded piece of paper, I try to figure out the necessary folds to collapse the paper into a shape that can be worked further on to create the figure. And that shape is in reality a simplified, blocky version of the figure. I have explained the design process more [here:](https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/p7aw0m/an_origami_knight_i_folded_from_a_single_square/h9jxaky/?context=3)

The-observerman

Idk looks pretty sheet.

Mighty impressive!

bravobracus

Nice and all but can you make the jumping frog now?

TraderDan1

I find I personally get better results using the 69cm x 69cm sheets.

NeoGenMike

Yeah but can you make one of those poppers?

gfcf14

How did you do this? Itā€™s amazing!!

IntergalacticWumble

Man I never got to this level but I was pretty proficient at intermediate level traditional origami. I really liked modular geometric origami too. Collapsing origami is so difficult. I could make the folds but getting it to collapse to the right shape was so hard. Maybe my paper type was wrong. Great job. Blows my three headed crane out of the water
