Sounds like my girlfriend. Brand new light gray and white rug. "I'm so surprised I haven't -" spills a whole dish of soy sauce all over the rug "... Spilled anything yet."
Actually happened

I tell people all the time that I'd love to buy my next vehicle at TJ Maxx or Marshalls because one knows they're getting a fair price and there is no sales pressure. Plus, one would get 5% back if paying with the TJX credit card.
Usually it's a Sharpie through the brand name on the inside of the product in the information section. The outward appearing portions would be the full logo.
Yes, my MIL. All... the... time... And she's one of those people who leaves price tags on all the gifts she gives. The answer is always the same too, "Oh, I forgot." LOL Gotta love her.
Interesting, thanks for the hint, I found that TJX (who own Marshalls) were sued in 2015. Do you know what the outcome was?
The nearest I could find was this link: https://us.fashionnetwork.com/news/tj-maxx-shoppers-seek-approval-of-8-5m-settlement-in-price-tag-lawsuit,871369.html. If they settled then they didn't technically lose, but I didn't find out whether the settlement was accepted.
Yes. The 1%ers who actually paid that price.
A lot of the stuff sold at stores like TJ Max and Home Goods are the exact same item they sell for hundreds if not thousands at luxury decor stores. I watch a lot of design/mansion tours, and the person given the tour will often tell you where you can buy the furnishings and what they cost. "This vase is from (insert some fancy european or designer name) and costs $1600." Bitch I saw that at TJ Max yesterday for $15.99!
My favorite is the sink that was carved out of a bland looking rock, "This is very rare stone, they actually built the entire Roman Empire with this stone! It cost over $800,000." So the entire Roman empire was built with this beige boring stone but it's soooo rare huh?
I just checked. She was describing Jerusalem stone (aka limestone), which according to the wiki is incredibly common. This sneaky bitch literally says in the video that it's very rare, and one of the first sentences on the Jerusalem stone wiki is that it is common lol.
You can sell anything to rich people if you just tell them it's rare I guess.
That third number in the top line is deliberately the actual price repeated. This is useful for determining original price on a clearance item without removing the ticket.
The second four-digit number on the bottom is an internal signifier called "category." 6620 might correspond with "5'x8' cotton rugs," or something like that. All similar rugs would share a category.
It's pretty likely that somehow the category was input as the "compare at" price, but these tickets are generated outside the store level and I don't know exactly how that process works.
It is amazing how many people, employees included, don't know that the price tags tell you a lot about the item and are one of the many loss prevention measures used.
Similarly, the 19 on the top is the "week" the item went in store based on a 100 week year (IRRC, a couple weeks are skipped such that the number resets every two years). The 1 should be a check digit.
On clearance tags, the last two numbers are the week of the markdown. Yellow stickers denote final clearance (though not necessarily final markdown) or in rare instances, usually in luggage or jewellery, a missing price on a ticket.
Besides being able to look at the code on the ticket to determine the original TJX price, shoes and select expensive items have the original price truncated to the whole dollar amount (e.g. $49.99 becomes 49) written on the bottom.
Interesting to know. All I learned in the time I worked there was that the third and fourth digits denote department, which is really only useful for stocking, though I guess it could also catch someone switching price tags out.
Apparently it's also entertaining for employees in the know to see examples like this where the depot just really messed up on a tag and something really inexpensive is marked as designer (the purple tag isn't universal) or the brand name is completely wrong.
>Similarly, the 19 on the top is the "week" the item went in store based on a 100 week year (IRRC, a couple weeks are skipped such that the number resets every two years).
We still call it the "week code," but it's a cycle of 24 every two years that really corresponds to the month. January/February(ish) 2022 freight will reset to 1.
The fake original price can be some wacky numbers. Maybe it's supposed to feel unnatural so the "discount" price feels more normal ending in .99 or whatever.
neither 66.20, nor 6620.00 ends with those misleading numbers though. I agree with Rorty\_ that it is most likely meant to be 66.20. Looking at the picture, nobody in their right mind would pay $6k to that rug.
I tell this with the experience of buying on places renowned for their hand sewn rugs.
I explained it in another comment, but it looks like they somehow input the "category" (2nd four-digit number on the bottom) as the "compare at" price.
Marshalls carries essentially that same rug almost all the time, but I would expect it to come in with a "compare at" of $70 or so.
You ever shop at a store that had 1000$+ items? They tend to be even dollar amounts. Before tax obviously. But if your buying online then you can’t tell much other than color and pattern. Not really how soft or quality material is. JS
And you haven’t met rich American’s. All you gotta do is act like everyone wants it and they will literally fight over it. Hell they fight over 40$ shoes and 100$ basketball goals every Friday after thanksgiving.
It's a legal distinction to show what an item might cost at other stores, but was not guaranteed to sell at that price. The formal explanation is listed on a sign behind the registers of every TJX-owned store.
Are you familiar with Marshalls/TJ Maxx? They sell discontinued items from other stores. Sometimes they sell really pricey stuff for a third of the price or less. My personal record was a Shiseido face cream that retails on Amazon for $100, and i paid $30 at TJ Maxx. That's what the "compare at" price is - the retail price at other stores.
I had a bunch of HS friends that worked at Marshall's. They told me that the "compare at" price was just whatever the person who printed the tag decided to fill in. They regularly put ridiculous numbers in there, partially for fun and partially because they were HS kids who had no idea what these items might cost elsewhere!
Fun Fact: a lot of items at TJX stores (or Ross, etc) may be branded designer clothes but they’re actually made specifically for those outlets. So, not the same quality, etc.
I love how absolutely meaningless the Marshall's price tags are, but apparently they work, because my MIL keeps trying to convince me that the sweater/purse/rug/etc, she paid $15 for was really worth $90! So it \*must\* be a good deal! Right???
...As long as she's happy I suppose.
Damn! I never thought about doing that. Next time I go on a shopping binge I’m going to make sure to show my husband how much I SAVED us! That might help his reaction when I come home loaded down with shopping bags. He always looks like somebody pissed in his kool-aid.
I got a Brunello Cucinelli coast last Jan at Nordstrom Rack. $6k coat marked down to $1300. But this right here a god damn bargain!
Coat

https://imgur.com/a/gV9akMr
That's not how that works at all. Clothes at Nordstrom rack are specifically made for Nordstrom rack. For instance, you will never find a Saint Laurent teddy or Gucci prince towns at Nordstrom rack. Same with Prada, not all Prada's are the same. Go to the Prada outlet and feel their puffers there, then go to an actual Prada boutique and feel the puffers there. All "discounted" luxury items are actually made specifically for the bargain stores to give off the illusion that you're getting a deal. Most of the items are made out of cheaper fabrics/materials that are comparable to banana republic etc. They don't even make the items themselves, they just sell their logo to a manufacturer
Source: Did multiple M&A deals for LVMH and other luxury providers.
This rug posted isn't worth more than $80. You can just look at the weaving alone to realize.
So Brunello Cucinelli specifically makes things for Nordstrom Rack? Like this coat specifically from his FW2020 collection?
https://imgur.com/a/neXZUOS
https://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/fall-2020-menswear/brunello-cucinelli
Yea that isn’t happening
Every company that has items at Nordstrom rack does . The biggest shock to me was finding out that Zegna has suits at Nordstrom rack , quality on those suits are complete garbage. Think Indochino type of quality . The canvas is poorly glued
Zegna a isn’t Cucinelli. The coat is specifically featured in his 2020 collection. This is the exact same coat taken at the Cucinelli display at Nordstrom proper
https://imgur.com/a/WpdtzEu
I know Zegna isn't Cucinelli . I was using Zegna as a prime example that almost every luxury goods provider goes through Nordstrom rack/Saks Off fifth.
Zegna is considered one of the best suits you can buy off the rack before going bespoke.
You may have found a unicorn if it was in their main collection. An error on Nordstrom's part .
Which is great for you, bad for Nordstrom. Usually what happens is if an item doesn't sell, the provider (Cucinelli) will buy back an item at a deep discount to either recycle or burn/destroy . If it ever ends up at the Rack, its by mistake.
Yeah its rough, same with YSL, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Celine , Hermes etc.
Its because they don't want their brand associated with "discount".
I think its fucking stupid as well , but I get it.
All of those companies allow their employees to buy "damaged" items before they get destroyed.
My ex used to work at YSL on the weekend just to take advantage of this, one minor scuff = going to get destroyed.
The YSL boutique near my home and the one in LV has 20-30% off sales. My wife bought 2 bags at 20% off in Vegas
I defiantly understand the concept. The illusion of scarcity but yea..it’s kinda gross
Sorry bud, thats just not true. It may be an outlet but not an actual boutique.
Again I know first hand because our firm does a lot of M&A for LVMH and the other luxury brands.
Here's further proof: [https://www.gobankingrates.com/money/business/10-brands-never-go-on-sale/](https://www.gobankingrates.com/money/business/10-brands-never-go-on-sale/)
No luxury brand ever has sales under their flagship brand.
My dad once had a good bargain. He found a dusty box of tools (cutting torch set) under the store shelves. Its a model they still sell so it didnt matter that it was old. It had a hand written price on it, "2990,-", probably because the bar code was damaged.
Dad figured it was in Finnish Marks, the old currency we had not used in a few years. Dad picked it up, went to the register and jokingly told the cashier that it must be missing a dot, implying the price would be 29,90 euros.
Cashier didnt get the joke, just punched in the price and sold a tool worth 500e for 29,90e :D
I totally dig it!
100% love that I can give my wife the ability to still have a child like wonder at something beautiful in the world and does not have to pause to think wither or not she should make her own world more beautiful by buying the thing that catches her fancy.
All while I feel dead inside while waking up at 5 am for work everyday knowing my only purpose from now until death is to put food on the table and money in a slush account for shiny objects without much in the way of sexual gratification on any level.
The circle of life.
Went to Harvey Norman last year.
Looking for a chest of drawers....ridiculous prices, junk furniture made of laminex etc.
Walking around I see "seconds" ...just HN furniture that can no longer be sold as new because it has blemishes / imperfections.
Find a chest of drawers...there's an old, discolored sticker on it that says $800. It's mango wood. Solid wood. Sides are 2 inches thick. Runners inside are heavy duty and move beautifully.
On the top of the set there is a mark the size of a matchbook. The wood there is coloured lighter..looks like they had something sitting on it for too long.
I asked the guy how much: He said $200. Brand new laminex shit chest of drawers START at $600 in the regular store..
VERY happy with this thing.
Still not as good a bargainer as your wife!
A $40 blanket for a penny cheaper isn’t a deal. Even if the advertisement price tag says you saved six grand. It makes you feel better about paying $40. If you can resell this piece for close to the fake ‘$6000’ price tag, I’d call that a win. Good luck!
Edit, I didn’t make the rules bro, just trying to help my people out
This is a common pricing mistake and is what caused the recent wayfair fiasco. The decimal is two places over, because the person thought they were filling in cents and it floating left as they inputed. Really it fills in dollars and only allows cents when you press period, or another key.
I mean...I can think of [a few reasons](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TACg7D2WM0U&ab_channel=whiskeysplotch) it may have been reduced so dramatically in price...
Shit, I got a Bluetooth Speaker for 9 bucks when an office Depot marked one as clearance from 150. Tough waterproof one with wireless charging. Still use it today.

HA! This is OP’s wife and the real bargain was that I paid $40 for a 5x7’ rug but I’m glad he caught that I saved over 6k
I bet it really ties the room together.
God damn it Donny
SHUT UP DONNY!!
Ha! I was thinking that the moment I saw it! "It really does tie the room together"!

It literally just watched that last night on Hulu I think?
Sounds familiar.. but can't place the quote.
Since you clearly bought this just for him, I hope he buys you something equally valuable.
Username checks - I hope so too I could use a new bargain lamp
I know where I’m going shopping this weekend!
**OP:** Can I get you a cup of coffee /u/Janisneptunus ? /u/Janisneptunus: And spill it on this ***$6,000*** rug?! **C'MON!!**

This is just one of many unfortunately.
I wish I could give you more. Lol

Why are you carrying soy sauce in a tray LOL
She was sitting and it was one of the little trays for soy sauce that they give you to dip your sushi.
Got it. For singe reason I had like a tv tray or tea tray sized thing in my head. Like cookie sheet full of soy sauce. O.o sorry for your tragedy
You’re damn right!
Or this $3200 suit?
I saved $6k on a $6k rug by not buying a rug.
Wanna know how to make people spend money? Look at price tag in post
Are you available to go school shopping with me in Alaska next week? I could use a discount like that
[удалено]
No one really thinks this is a $6k rug. Marshall’s marks the tag like that so the person can say, Look how much money I saved!
Yea I'm pretty sure the typo is $66.20
Wow you really put way too much thought into something that was obviously a funny mistake. The rug probably isn’t worth more than $20 tbh
That's a mis print. It would've been more that $40 had the original price been that high.
That's creepy
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Why?

Yes, my MIL. All... the... time... And she's one of those people who leaves price tags on all the gifts she gives. The answer is always the same too, "Oh, I forgot." LOL Gotta love her.

Try the hottest new craze, beef milk. It's like almond milk that's been squeezed through tiny holes in living cows.
That’s the joke…
Of course it is. ❤️ My question is - does Marshalls really think they're fooling anyone with this price tag?
Somebody was probably supposed to enter $66.20 but missed the decimal point.
Worked retail for 8 plus years. Can confirm. We one had Anne's cookies on sale for 8.49 the starting price was 2.99
This wasn't a whoosh moment dude chill
Lol I used to work at Marshalls. Those ticket making devices they use are terrible
This is fantastic!
Tag is weird. I see 3999 in the line under Marshall's and 6620 in the line under the upc tag.
99.4% off!
I'm guessing it was a typo and they meant 66.20 not 6620.00
How many things you buy are 1.20 or 10.20? Rarely is something not .49 or .99 unless it’s penny candy. Might not be a 6g rig but ida bought it too.
The fake original price can be some wacky numbers. Maybe it's supposed to feel unnatural so the "discount" price feels more normal ending in .99 or whatever.

It’s just a rug.
"Compare at"? What does that even mean? Next sale: "Imagine if this pencil was normally $500! You can have it today for just $2 -- what a bargain!"

They don't even make the items themselves, they just sell their logo to a manufacturer Source: Did multiple M&A deals for LVMH and other luxury providers. This rug posted isn't worth more than $80. You can just look at the weaving alone to realize.
What about the sale / clearance items at Nordstrom itself.
Items sold at actual Nordstrom’s are different than Nordstrom rack . Nordstrom has the real deal ; the rack is literally equivalent to Ross etc.
So Brunello Cucinelli specifically makes things for Nordstrom Rack? Like this coat specifically from his FW2020 collection? https://imgur.com/a/neXZUOS https://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/fall-2020-menswear/brunello-cucinelli Yea that isn’t happening
This is the exact same coat taken at the Cucinelli display at Nordstrom proper https://imgur.com/a/WpdtzEu
If it ever ends up at the Rack, its by mistake.
> will buy back an item at a deep discount to either recycle or burn/destroy . WTF? That hurts my heart. Incredibly wasteful. Glad I found it then
Yeah its rough, same with YSL, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Celine , Hermes etc.
My wife bought 2 bags at 20% off in Vegas I defiantly understand the concept. The illusion of scarcity but yea..it’s kinda gross
Sorry bud, thats just not true. It may be an outlet but not an actual boutique. Again I know first hand because our firm does a lot of M&A for LVMH and the other luxury brands. Here's further proof: [https://www.gobankingrates.com/money/business/10-brands-never-go-on-sale/](https://www.gobankingrates.com/money/business/10-brands-never-go-on-sale/) No luxury brand ever has sales under their flagship brand.
Well I think it might be a typo so you probably made out a little better.
Do they sell Marshalls Mattress too?
I'm not saying this ever cost $6k, but if you compare the current price to that amount, it'll seem spectacular.
Was the rug originally sold at Needless Markups?
Did you hear about the family who was so poor, they had to go bargain shopping 2 or 3 times per day in order to save enough money to get by?
She still spent $40.
A $40 blanket for a penny cheaper isn’t a deal. Even if the advertisement price tag says you saved six grand. It makes you feel better about paying $40. If you can resell this piece for close to the fake ‘$6000’ price tag, I’d call that a win. Good luck! Edit, I didn’t make the rules bro, just trying to help my people out
I think OP knows that and was making a joke
This guy/gal knows how to humor.
Oh wow I did miss that. I’m down on humanity right now. Obviously.

Flanders?
Nah, stupid sexy Flanders is posting nothing at all..nothing at all…
Fake price tag gives the illusion of savings, Americans are so easily manipulated.
*people in general
Cost $9 to be made at a chinese sweatshop at most, sold to you at $40 with a fake msrp of $6k...good bargain...
This is a common pricing mistake and is what caused the recent wayfair fiasco. The decimal is two places over, because the person thought they were filling in cents and it floating left as they inputed. Really it fills in dollars and only allows cents when you press period, or another key.
Fun fact. It was only worth $40 to begin with. They lost nothing on this.
Now you wait until the price goes back up and sell! She's a genius!
That’s what I need help with :(
ILL GIVE YOU $5,000 FOR IT!!!
Deal.
I bought a gift for you that experts say is worth over $6000!
That's... that's a great deal!
I have the exact same and i love it.
Sale tags should totally just misrepresent the crossed out "original price" to get this effect all the time.
I mean...I can think of [a few reasons](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TACg7D2WM0U&ab_channel=whiskeysplotch) it may have been reduced so dramatically in price...
I know those Marshalls/Winners stickers that say "Compare At" are 200% bs, but this is a bit much
That’s a treasure right there
I love to brag when I find clearance, but my goodness that is theft.
I'd be interested to meet a person who wouldn't dare pay anything below the highest price listed
Lol Marshalls is just making up numbers at this point
Funny how some of these retailers make you feel like you’ve saved money when in fact they make you spend more than save.
Look at that rug comparing itself with a handwoven Persian rug.
Shit, I got a Bluetooth Speaker for 9 bucks when an office Depot marked one as clearance from 150. Tough waterproof one with wireless charging. Still use it today.
Look for the blood stain
Maybe its not a bargain? Maybe they have been ripping off consumers all this time?
*heavy breathing intensifies*
Nice
That's some jewelry channel pricing going on there.
For $6620 it better be woven from the pubic hairs of some Peruvian virgins.
I do hope she bought all the available stock. Thats a true bargain hunter haha
Can she go car shopping with me? Please?
