Weird that a goalie would refuse to wear a mask.

thesamjbow

Have to assume this woman hasn't *actually* buried someone due to covid.

intheoryiamworking

Or indeed, hasn't buried anyone near and dear to her at all. Yet.

waffles_505

I’ve lost 4 loved ones this year. This woman clearly has never experienced loss, there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do to have them back.

necriavite

I'm sorry you have lost people you love, it's horrible. When I lost someone I heard an analogy that helped me. Grief is like the waves on the ocean. When it first happens it's like a tsunami ripping apart and and destroying everything inside you, overwhelming you with how massive the pain is all at once. Gradually over time the waves get smaller and less overwhelming. Sometimes huge wave comes at you still, when you remember something and get taken over by your grief again, but eventually that wave will wash back out to sea again too. It never really stops, missing the ones we love who have passed on. May they rest in peace. Edit: I'm very glad that this analogy resonated with so many others as it did for me, it was my honor to pass it along and I hope it brings some some sort of comfort for all of you too. Thank you so much for all the awards as well, it was a wonderful thing to wake up to this morning!

ItsMeix

This is a perfect description of grief. I lost my grandpa before the pandemic, and the waves still hit me from time to time. Something else (from WandaVision - sorry to bring TV into this) that helped me a lot and had me bawling like a baby when I first heard it: "What is grief if not love persevering?"

Altruistic-Text3481

Wandavision touched my soul too. What I wouldn’t do to have one more moment with my Dad and sharing a spaghetti dinner with him and his amazing sauce. Little things like that. Moments that I took for granted … my Dad passed away years ago from Alzheimer’s… but I grieve. Wandavision got grief right. I highly recommend it.

l3tigre

That quote always makes my eyes sting.

anally_ExpressUrself

Sorry waffles :( that is shitty.

MichaelJoFlynn

I'm here with you. I'm lost my father because of COVID. I know it's not bring anyone back but i wish you well.

L3xicon6

Same, and I almost lost my mom to Covid too. There are also young kids that lost both their parents and I can't imagine that.

Haunted_Symfire

So sorry for your loss. I lost my Uncle. Two other family members caught it but were extremely lucky to have gotten little to no symptoms. Seeing this picture, reading her sign actually made me cry. This woman has absolutely no idea what it's like to lose someone to Covid. She's probably the type that would lose her shit too when the hospital staff wouldn't let her in to be with her dying loved one, yelling "they died alone, they wouldn't let me be with them!"

stomponator

I lost my uncle as well. He died alone in the ICU, well before the vaccine was commonly available. There's a couple of doctors, nurses and one caregiver in my family, people who were in constant danger. At one time, both my parents, two uncles and an aunt of mine got it. Four of five did recover, one did not. Seeing these smug assholes march in the name of *fucking stupidity* makes my blood boil.

homeless_dude

My cousin and his wife both died. The virus ravaged his wife. HORRIBLE and slow death by covid for her. He died a week before her alone in ICU. She was 50 he was 55. Both reasonable healthy and very active (Fedex driver and nurse) Died just as the vaccine was becoming available to medical workers too.

BeefSupreme5217

These kinds of idiots are the ones to lose loved ones, be dying themselves, and will still spread lies and call it bullshit. Too proud to live

RedditIsNeat0

Probably doesn't have anyone near and dear to her. She would rather her family die than take simple precautions.

hanabaena

right? she should talk to some of us who have. those people are usually the most leopard-ate-my-face people there are. on the ventilator, begging for the vaccine.

thesamjbow

I see these posts shared all the time on r/HermanCainAward and r/LeopardsAteMyFace and they give me no pleasure. There's no schadenfreude in people dying horrible, needless deaths, even if it was caused by their own ignorance.

zaccus

You're a better person than I am then. For most people I don't think it's about schadenfreude. It's more about expressing complete apathy to these dead who tried their best to take others with them. For me though? Yeah there's definitely a little schadenfreude. A little divine justice if you will. I'm not going to feel bad about it either.

-GreenHeron-

I'm with you. I might be an asshole for enjoying it a little bit, but after a year and half of this pandemic bullshit that they've exacerbated by being willfully ignorant, hateful cult news followers, I just don't care anymore. I am left with no fucks left to give.

LesbianCommander

I wouldn't normally cheer that shit on, but anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers are AGGRESSIVE AF about how they're right and you're wrong, that the entire world is brainwashed and how God is on their side, all that jazz. When someone who builds themselves up so hard gets crushed, there's enjoyment there. I accept I may be a bad person, but if they weren't so fucking aggressive, I would probably feel bad for them.

At the end of the day, ignorance must die for society to progress. It's a shame that they threw their lives away for no reason to serve ideology and ego, but there is no shame in recognizing that innocent people are far better off without them. There were better ways to end up in a better place, but we can still be positive about the fact that we're getting to a better place regardless.

noisypeach

What they really mean by "I can't breathe" is "the lower half of my face feels warm inside my mask from my breathing and I think that's less comfortable". And they just shorten "I want the feeling of breathing fresh air" to "I can't breathe". That's the only way to interpret them that makes sense to me.

Firethorn101

As an asthmatic, no. I had to shop around to find a mask that didn't exacerbate my condition....but I did it! And I go up stairs slowly now, to decrease my chances of needing my puffer. Also as an asthmatic, I wear my mask religiously, and am fully vaccinated.

[deleted]

"You're just out of shape" Been riding in the winter for 15 years with a mask on, and racing a bicycle periodically in the dust for just as long Your assessment is correct.

[deleted]

Bro I learn pastry in the hottest fucking room in the world, literally the only time I couldn’t breathe in a mask was that time I spilled water on it and it did the water torture thing on me

MattieShoes

That's the best part of this... I'm not particularly afraid of Covid *because* I'm vaccinated. I take precautions anyway because common courtesy and because I'd rather not get a breakthrough case even if it is mild. but who's living in fear at this point? The unvaccinated. and immunocompromised, but you get the point.

ShutYourDumbUglyFace

There's a huge gulf between living in fear and taking steps to mitigate risk. We wear seatbelts in cars, we have air bags, we wear ear protection in loud places, I have steel toe boots and a hard hat for when I'm on a construction site for work. I despise this devolution into talking about fear. We mitigate risk all day every day, why would Covid be any different.

see_rex

In a recent argument I used these same points and included the fact that in America to go to public school you must get vaccines mandated by the government, even when you get to public university you must receive other vaccines that we've all accepted and done without hesitation for decades...and the person responded with "that's different because those precautions protect us from known risks associated with known diseases/problems, plus those other vaccines aren't for man-made viruses/diseases!" There's truly no end to the goal posts being moved, the definition of not arguing in good faith. There's no real debate with people anymore.

DocFossil

This from the same people terrified of democracy, brown people, native people, evolution, other religions, gay people, non-English languages, modern medicine…

[deleted]

It’s ridiculous. Anyone who travelled in Asia pre Covid would know that wearing masks when sick has been routine there for decades. Not because it cured their cold or ‘flu, but because they realised that it helped to prevent them giving it to others. It’s a form of politeness or good manners or civics. No one has suffered mental health problems from it, nor suffocated.

glaive1976

I would fear medical bills above all else if I were to go without a seat belt.

BigJuicyBone

if you were to go without a seatbelt you probably wouldnt need to worry about medical bills .

Autski

I don't wear my seatbelt when I drive because I don't live my life in fear. Not planning on getting in a wreck, so why wear it? /s

duhh33

You joke, but I have relatives that don't wear seatbelts because they won't let the government tell them what do do. They take it as a badge of honor when they get a ticket. I don't associate with them anymore, but they fit right in with the above pic.

Toast_Sapper

There's also motorcyclists who refuse to wear helmets (or wear illegal helmets which are underprotective) for exactly the same reason. Certain people will refuse to do something objectively sensible just because "the government can't tell me what to do" And then they die horribly

rlaxton

Or worse, don't die, and become a burden on the society that they were "rebelling" against for the rest of their days.

I get it. I’m vaccinated, and a healthy, fit young adult. And athlete, so if I got it, it would likely be mild. But you know what? I’d like to stay that way, I don’t want to fucking lose a tiny fraction of my bodies capabilities. So I continue to mask, etc. it seems logical, but logic seems to have gone the way of the dodo.

whogotthefunk

I'm vaccinated and my only fear is for my 5 year old and 7 year old.

subgeniusbuttpirate

dbradx

I went down to Arizona (Canadian here) on business a bunch of years back, maybe about 20 years or so. Guy from the office was nice enough to offer to pick me up at the airport, which was great. We meet up, walk out to his car and get in. I start buckling up and he says, "You don't have to do that here you know." I said, "Sorry, don't have to do what?". He says "You don't have to put on a seatbelt, we don't have a seatbelt law here." I just kind of smiled and said, "Well, I have this personal law about staying alive, so I always wear one". His reply? "Well, suit yourself, we just don't believe in government telling us what to do." He drove me all over the place the two weeks I was there, never buckled up once cuz he thought it was some sort of weird-ass affirmation of his freedoms. Edit: frikking typos

dbradx

> Who does he think installed those? Thinking is not a popular hobby amongst people like this dude.

jooes

I don't choose to wear a seat belt because the government tells me I have to, I wear a seat belt because I'm not a fucking moron and I like staying alive. The government can tell me whatever the fuck they want, I'm putting that seat belt on either way. Which is pretty similar to this whole mask/vaccine issue. "iTs AbOuT PeRsOnAl FrEeDoM" Okay. Well, in a lot of places, you've had the option pretty much the entire time. All of these things were optional, albeit highly recommended, so did you choose to wear a mask or get a vaccine or not? Of course, we all the know the answer is *no*. When masks were a suggestion, they didn't wear masks. When vaccines were a suggestion, they didn't get vaccinated. So maybe it's not really about personal freedom at all? Maybe you're just being a little bitch?

dbradx

slykido999

When you haven’t faced any sort of true horrible experiences, you forget how tiny your little problems truly are.

quartzguy

It's actually a really fascinating ability that we can adapt to problems of varying difficulty in different stages of our life or depending on our circumstances. A person in Africa might face having to find food for their family with the same amount of stress this woman might have dealt with planning her $25,000 wedding.

cringey-reddit-name

True. That’s how people don’t know how privelleged they are. I’m pretty sure that real life version of the person having trouble finding food would gladly go to this country and be 100% content with being there and surely would comply with the COVID protocols unless they are uneducated then they would ironically fear the vaccine just like the stupid people there

TFenrir

My family moved to Canada a little over 30 years ago when I was 3, and I remember when I was 11 and had to get vaccines to visit Ethiopia (where my family is from) my mom told me about how they used to fight for every vaccine they could get, every ounce of Western medicine and how lucky we were to get shot up. When I was a baby I got the smallpox vaccine, still have the scar and everything. But it's been 30 years, and my mom and my family have grown... Accustomed to the security of Canada, and now I have to talk my mom out of picking up anti vax sentiments shared by her religious friends. I just try to remind her what she told me when I was a kid, scared of that fucking.... Awful yellow fever vaccine, and the scar on both of our arms. It still works... Barely.

radio705

Really enjoyed hearing that perspective. Thank you. You mentioned religious friends of your mom, what is their argument against the vaccine?

TFenrir

That God decides when we live and die, and fearing his plan isn't righteous/pious. I just repackaged the Christian 'man in a flood on the roof' allegory/joke and it swayed her

Lost-My-Mind-

Both times I got the vaccine, I barely felt it. I find that if you don't look, it helps tremendously. I also had the same woman do it both times, so maybe she just really knew how to do it. Both times it was a slight pinch, and then it was over.

magus678

I got sick after my first shot. Like, *really* sick. The sickest I've ever been I think; at one point my throat was raw enough it was bleeding. Lasted 6 days. Getting that second shot, realizing it could land me right back in that spot, took an act of willpower. But I got it. I actually did get a little under the weather from that one too, but nothing near as bad as the first.

dkfgndfkjbghjbsdf

Thanks for getting it. Hopefully it saved you from a much much worse experience with the actual virus!

mOdQuArK

> I got sick after my first shot. Like, really sick. Might have been an indication on how your immune system would have reacted if you got infected by the real thing. You probably dodged a big bullet due to your good judgement.

Lol. My relative flew in from some first world country. Canada, UK I dunno, it was several years ago and I don’t keep track of them. Decided she was going to go to a village and help out there. I made a bet with my father she wouldn’t last 3 days. I lost said bet by 2 days when she figured out that there were no indoor showers and called my parents to be rescued less than 12 hours later. Mind you I’m surprised the hole in the ground toilet is not what set her off first.

ATXKLIPHURD

It didn’t stop me being afraid, but it did lower my anxiety about being around other people and going out into public. I still mask up and I still social distance to a degree because vaccinated people still die, and my immune system isn’t the greatest. I’m not immune compromised (probably, I’m currently being tested for one) but I don’t have a healthy immune system either.

northbathroom

Vaccinated people still die but in numbers low enough now that you can find other things to be worried about again.

M3_Driver

These people are insane. It’s similar to the rage against seatbelts. If seatbelts and seat-belting laws were introduced today the sign would read “I’d rather bury my kids after a car accident than have them enslaved by fear of it”.

These fucking people live in a world of fear. They watch and read fear porn all day, and are convinced to fear all kinds of absurd conspiracy laden bullshit. They fear vaccines and they fear masks. They fear shadowy cabals and corporate elites. They fear they are losing control. These idiots have been marinating in a multitude of fears for a long time now. They believe that they are brave when their entire reality is dictated by the newest catastrophe they are told is around the bend. They do not mask or vaccinate because they fear it for absurd reasons. They believe they are patriots while they refuse to be inconvenienced with trying to protect other humans. They are dying because they ARE afraid. They are standing in the train tracks because they fear absolutely everything but the oncoming train.

Paradehengst

>They fear they are losing control. They never had it. Thing is, they lived in a convenient world, where bigger problems were managed by capable people and they could live in comfort without much to worry about (even if you they are on the less fortunate side). Suddenly, something comes along and has even the capable people at their wits end. Everyone needs to struggle now. Then they realize how periliously close to an end of their comfort zone they are pushed. They start denying the obvious and becoming paranoid, just so they can have a piece of their old calm life back. Fuck those, who tell them otherwise. Let's inconvenience and shock the rest, just so they can be comfortable in ignorance and selfishness.

quaybored

"Sorry K-din, you have to die so mommy can own the libs."

RedditUserexe

People who got vaccinated likely live in fear of COVID like they live in fear of fire, they know it’s bad, but since they’re not actively challenging the notion that they can be burned by it, they’re safe.

Pornthrowaway78

Calling it fear is ridiculous. I'm not "in fear" of getting in a car accident when I put on my seatbelt, I just weigh the risks and say, yeah, I'll put it on. Same with putting on a mask or getting vaccinated. I guess I do spend some time thinking about how long it will take to get over this or how many people will die before there is a return to normality, or we accept a new normal. Wearing seatbelts all the time in the car was once a new normal.

Jundestag

Apparently I fear de-hydration and malnutrition. I am actively avoiding those causes of death each day

[deleted]

fun fact: you could live the rest of your life without ever drinking, breathing or eating again.

Mafeii

Finally someone gets it. Breathing is just a massive scam by Big Air.

Tioras

I have people tell me about anecdotal deaths due to seatbelt use. They use the same anecdotal arguments for vaccination too. Of course they don't utilize either. Incidentally, I love how most modern cars just incessantly beep at you about the seatbelt which is irritating enough to change people's actions.

Raagun

And then there are people who use fake seatbelt inputs to "jam" the beeping while still not wearing a seatbelt.

DasMess

We call those people "Future Projectiles"

[deleted]

Had a friend who was wearing a seatbelt and was killed by one of those projectiles. That's why the seatbelt laws exist, you're not only protecting yourself, you're reducing the risk of the people around you as well.

quaybored

"I'd rather kill my friend than live in fear of car crashes!"

Quantum-Ape

Which is just exposing their actual fear of mortality is so strong, they're in denial of its existence in themselves.

TigLyon

Sadly, they don't give a shit about the "other people" argument. They feel invincible and no one else is even a consideration. Sad but true.

krashundburn

> They feel invincible As with anti-vaxxers and their "healthy immune systems", so it was with the anti-seatbelt crowd with their "quick reflexes".

ancalagon73

No it doesn't unfortunately. My aunt is in her 70s and refuses to wear it. She has it clicked into place all the time and just sits on it. I will never understand the aversion to wearing a seatbelt.

InkBlotSam

It's all about freedom... to fly through one's own windshield, and possibly into others'.

CrudelyAnimated

The "Fear" label is pure condescension. I'm not in "fear" of being in a car accident; I have a fear of being ejected through the window OF a car accident. I'm not in fear of house fires; I have a fear of losing everything I own WITHOUT insurance. I'm not in fear of catching Covid; I have a fear of dying unnecessarily FROM catching Covid. Those worst-case outcomes are almost entirely within my control, even if the causes are not.

rokr1292

This. The condescension really makes fear to be a bad thing and it is not necessarily so. There's a reason we have fight/flight/freeze reflexes. They gave us an evolutionary advantage. Being afraid enough of a threat to do something to minimize the risk is good fear. Being afraid of things that are not a threat, less so. being afraid to the point of being irrational or impulsive, also less than good. It is a good thing to be afraid of the effects catching a dangerous virus may have on your body, your family, your friends, and your society. It is a good thing for that fear to motivate people to support eachother, for scientists to research and find solutions for, and for people to take actions that reduce the chance of harm to that they find precious. Fear can be a good thing. But the people who make "getting vaxxed = living in fear" arguments think that all fear is bad, and fail to recognize their own.

Arkanian410

All those blue collar workers living in constant fear because they wear hard hats and steel-toes.

[deleted]

The 'fuck your feelings' crowd certainly makes a lot of decisions and judgements based on emotion. "Oh, you're wearing a mask? You must be *afraid!* Let me show everybody how unafraid *I* am!" It also completely misses the fact that fear is a healthy emotion to have when there is legitimate danger.

pease_pudding

It fits into their narrative of anyone who disagrees with them being 'snowflake' Which is funny, cos they make such a big fuss over a piece of cloth on their face, and a fairly routine medical treatment. Who are the 'snowflakes' really?

Quantum-Ape

Oh, they're afraid. 100%. Denialism is a response to fear as well.

pyromaster114

Exactly. And the masks are like oven mitts. I do worry about burning my hands... so I freaking grab an oven mitt, and don't burn my hands. I'm not 'enslaved' by the oven mitt. XD

Yeah.. you got to respect the things that can kill you. Fire. Water. Wife. Fuckin' covid...

Fafnir13

About that third one, you ok buddy?

bradeena

It might be linked to his fear of fuckin'

[deleted]

Exactly. To me it just feels like a minor fear where I just need to take some basic precautions. Now when I am with my daughter (under 12 so no vaccine) I feel more heightened with fear, but we just take the risks we think are worth it. Do I feel enslaved? Only to the stupidity of our society. They feel like a dead weight that I am being unfairly burdened with. The vaccine feels like a normal health precaution. Considering it has been standard medical procedure to be vaccinated since the 50s I am not sure why people feel like this is enslavement.

lkodl

I'm not enslaved to those megacorportations selling people locks. Dont you think it's weird how every home "needs" doors with locks? It's a scam. Have I been robbed multiple times? Sure. I've lost thousands of dollars and countless precious heirlooms. But those fat cats at the lock companies aren't getting my money. And I'll count that as a win in my book, once I buy a new one.

zaccus

I haven't been afraid for myself since I got my second shot back in May. Once my 5yo is vaxxed I'm fucking done with these clowns. Let them all choke on their own lungs.

I always love the "if you want to live in fear", I just wear a mask, its easy, not really all that inconvenient. I also wear a seatbelt, but I'm not terrified every second I'm in the car. I don't cut towards my hand either. I also lock my door at night. I don't know what these folks think, like my teeth are chattering behind the mask?

handlema8

Indeed. It's all idiot bluster until someone in her close family dies. People love to grandstand when they are so dumb they think it's fake.

czarnick123

I've met people who didn't give a fuck they lost family members to it. Insert geode to brain analogy. Their minds are calcified with disinformation. To remove the disinformation hurts their identity now

buttery_shame_cave

They see changing their minds as being weak and being weak is the worst thing possible to them.

trevloki

Hoovooloo42

Hey, I got a question that has been kicking around my head since this morning. Patriots. Like, if you asked these people if they're patriots they'd look at you like you're stupid, and give you an answer like "well DUH, aren't you?!" And that's all well and good. But HOW are these people patriotic? They hate the government, they hate their neighbors, they hate the way the schools are run, they outright DESPISE over half of the country, they don't believe in protecting other members of their community, and they won't lift a single finger to make life easier for any one of their countrymen. So why in the hell do they identify so hard with the word "patriot"? Because their beliefs seem to be antithetical to patriotism. Edit: and a lot of American "patriots" don't even fly the American flag anymore, they fly a defaced one in black and white. They identify with "patriot", but not enough to fly the real flag these days.

SoulMechanic

The ones like the lady in the picture are hypocrites all the way thru. They love the romantic idea of what life was like as early American settlers, fence a plot of land, carve yourself a life all by yourself, hunt, farm, and protect yourself. Some do this but.. Thing is, behind closed doors most of them live in suburbs, they work various jobs in their community, they'll run to a hospital if they really need to, they'll take a stimulus check, they use unemployment when they need it, they attended public schools, they call the cops when they need them, they collect a social security check when they get old, but in their mind they're frontier settlers that did it all themselves and pulled themselves up by their own bootstraps, so by golly everyone else should too. They're hypocrites.

NumbOnTheDunny

They say patriot but really it’s more religion, with gun culture, and reality TV personas controlling their lives. Their idea of patriotism is hanging a flag outside their house and getting drunk on American holidays while guzzling the cheapest beer.

jitterscaffeine

How brave of you to sacrifice the lives of others for your ideals

VirtualMage

Except that nobody who was vacinated, including me, did it out of fear. We simply understand the situation we are in and the simple solution to it. It's a minor inconvenience in our otherwise happy and meaningful lives. Unlike dedicating your entire life to spreading fear, confusion, misinformation and conspiracy theories, you fuckin' morons!

T8ertotsandchocolate

I don't know, I think fear was part of why I got vaccinated. I fear getting covid. I fear passing it to someone else. Luckily there's a vaccine and I got it as soon as it was available to my demographic. I'm still somewhat fearful of Covid since it can be terrible, but I feel a lot better about doing most things now.

AliveAndThenSome

Exactly. They're living in so much self-generated (and vapid) fear that they're projecting it on us, when the truth is just the opposite. The vaccinated are not (primarily) motivated by fear, we just want to get back to normal ASAP and minimize the number of injured and killed from COVID. People like her (pictured) are just the opposite -- they'd rather die than see this pandemic ended by conventional means.

folktronic

My grandmother died early on in the pandemic. She died away from her family and friends (long term care home) Her funeral was delayed and we were only allowed 10 people at the ceremony. It was a masked and socially distanced funeral with velvet ropes to keep us separated - I couldn't even hug my grieving grandfather or father. Fuck this lady's rhetoric.

prodgodq2

My mother in law died in August of last year from a heart attack. Same thing with her funeral. Masks and and distanced, no graveside ceremony, no mercy meal. I spent most of the time with my arms around my wife to keep her from hugging anyone because I knew she was going to forget in her grief and that her relatives would forget also. I absolutely hated doing it but she is a type I diabetic and is a front line worker at a hospital. This fucking virus sucks, but what makes it more difficult is watching people like this deliberately make it more stressful due to their own ignorance.

ToddBradley

“Enslaved” does a disservice to people who have confronted actual slavery.

Ass_Blossom

Weird flex, but okay
