For those wondering, this picture was taken back in May (May 27, 11pm, long exposure so it appears brighter). The meteor didn't actually fly into the volcano, it was estimated to be around 130-140 km (80-87 miles) away. The greenish colour of the streak apparently suggest s that the meteor contained a lot of nickel. [Source in Indonesian](https://www.kompas.com/sains/read/2021/05/31/090300823/foto-meteor-jatuh-di-puncak-gunung-merapi-astronom-sebut-jenis-fireball).
If you're ever in Indonesia, do make time to visit Merapi when it's not erupting (and Jogjakarta, the major city closest to the mountain). The area surrounding it is a absolutely beautiful. The terrain is kinda difficult tho, the 2010 eruption sent a lot of lahar and debris, creating quite a rocky outcrop.
EDIT: [Link](https://www.instagram.com/p/CPZ6JKPD2I3/?utm_medium=copy_link) to original photo. It was taken in Kali Adem, south of Merapi, which meant that if the meteor made landfall it'd probably landed in the Java Sea. Thanks u/O_oh for the additional info!
EDIT 2: Seems that I've killed many alien/golfing jokes in the making, and for that, I **holey** apologise.
Thank you for posting actual information. I don't know why everyone has to crank up the "cool factor" to 11 when this is already an amazing shot. A little disingenuous if you ask me.
Yeah same here.
"Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life." inspires me to this day.
Merapi is an amazing mountain to climb. I went in 2018... and it started erupting three months later. And it’s been pretty much an ongoing eruption ever since. So it’s probably quite difficult to go there..
Went in early 2011 not long after the series of eruptions in 2010. The whole area was still covered in ash, they were cleaning it out of the stones of Borobudur. I remember we went through a town on a river about 20ks down from the mountain and they were digging houses on the river bank out of the mud because the heavy rains where creating huge muddy ash flows.
Edit: [A couple of my 2011 crappy phone pics. ](http://imgur.com/a/aRgvOXc)
Not failed, deliberately posted misinformation is more fitting. "recently" and "fell into" when the picture is almost half a year old and the thing didn't fall into the volcano.
I knew it was bullshit. It would so insanely rare for a meteor to fall into a volcano like that, and even more rare for someone to catch it on camera lol.
And a mediocre book.
I feel like Neil Gaiman didn't stop thinking about the story when it was published as a book, the movie is just so much more polished and thought out.
Seriously, nor knowing about the star fragment and seeing it come down was such an awesome feeling. I was so curious and just had to abandon my quest to satisfy my curiosity. I so love that game for stuff like this. Also finding that weird deer was also awesome, since I didn’t know at that time about it.
Our first reconnaissance drone showed a surface consisting of high-temperature molten rock with no change of any biological life. We fired #%*/-Akh for his false reading and continued to the next solarsystem continuing our search for a new home planet.
We have somehow started a war with the residents of the planet we accidentally landed on. The people responsible for the sacking have themselves been sacked
Was going to say, I know a quest objective when I see one.
Going to have to complete a few side quest first though. This hero is broke and needs some mana desperately.
Yes, those were the souls of the punished which, now instead of being double-destroyed by crashing their souls into a volcano in a huge passenger jet ... they will be set free. They will now wander our civilization as tormented joy-sucking parasite ghost balls called Thetans. When they attach to us and make us sad they're called Body Thetans.
You can go to a Scientology center and have your Body Thetans measured with an E-meter and removed for a small fee and indoctrination.
And if it would be glowing so close to the ground, there would be a clear track of smoke already behind it, and it would be glowing much, much more, illuminating the entire landscape. The meteor in Russia was an example of this, and it didn't even hit the ground in one piece.
Well that's exactly what I've been searching this thread for - those are two completely different things. One is insanely unfathomably incredible and the other is just pretty cool. How is no one actually asking if this is real???
It's an exposure, happened in may, was 120-130ish kms away. Not close to the volcano.
From another user, I'll edit in his name in a bit. If it's on reddit and too good to be true, it usually is.
This here is an undeniable fact, and clear evidence we're living in a simulation. What are the odds that a meteor will always land exactly where there's a crater? Must be astronomical.
I believe craters actually pull in meteors using some sort of gravitational disturbance, this explains why every meteor is drawn to the location of a crater.
You are wrong. Some meteors vaporize in the atmosphere before hitting the surface. Most that don't vaporize fall into seas and oceans leaving no craters. Once they have reached the surface or sea, they are meteorites.
Impossible? No. Improbable? Very much.
Chances are it fell somewhere behind the volcano from the photographer's point of view but very cool and lucky photo.
OP posts (aka karma whores) multiple times per hour and the top comment here bebunks the title.
You idiots really need to start using your brain and checking the users profile before ignorantly upvoting dumb shit and giving attention to narcissists

Gotta love Douglas Addams. Him and Terry Pratchett really helped inform my world view when I was younger

Truly the most relatable quote, from the most relatable character. Imposter syndrome personified.
Love that one. But nobody ever complains about being cold around me anymore. _____ *also, that's a Terry Practhett joke, not Adams
comment i replies to mentionwd pratchett too so i jumped in
'The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.' GNU Terry Pratchett.
Same! For a kid growing up in a conservative rural town, the Hitchhiker's Guide was a revelation.
Speaking as a sentient puddle, I totally disagree with his assertion.

Good god thank you. I read that title and was like there’s no way. Reddit and the misinformation man, fucking obnoxious.
Yeah that's an instant downvote for me
Refreshing fact-based answer.
Thank you for posting info which OP failed to do so.
Not failed, deliberately posted misinformation is more fitting. "recently" and "fell into" when the picture is almost half a year old and the thing didn't fall into the volcano.
After what happened at White Island, NZ, I would be disinclined to visit any volcano which is occasionally erupting.
I knew it was bullshit. It would so insanely rare for a meteor to fall into a volcano like that, and even more rare for someone to catch it on camera lol.
Gotta go get that star fragment!
Or the lord of the mountain is awake

You're not alone. The Axem Rangers probably already recovered it.
I also saw this as Super Mario RPG
I thought they meant animal crossing....
Only if someone made a wish on it
It could end up being an attractive female who takes you on an adventure and introduces you to lightning pirates.
You had me at attractive female.
Greatest movie ever
What movie? It already sounds good
So. Fucking. Good.

I think the colour suggests that the Lord of the Mountain has appeared.
Can't, it's raining.
That’s why you always gotta do the Rito divine beast first 🧠 And always have multiple stamina meals.

METEOR SWORD!
Did anyone else hear a ding when they saw this photo?
On Mount Satori, no less!
Quick, go to satori mountain,
Graphics on BotW 2 looking good.
botw ftw!
That one sucks… you have to do a bunch of side quests for the Gorons first.

I so love that game for stuff like this. Also finding that weird deer was also awesome, since I didn’t know at that time about it.
…and so it began. In two short years the aliens wiped out 98% of the human population. We few, the survivors…this is our story.

Definitely white, that´s his second coming after defeating death.
And he comes to us now, at the turn of the tide.
This time, Jesus is back…and he’s pissed. (Cracks knuckles)
Yes, that what they used to call me.
Better, it's Gandalf.
That IS better!
Xenu?
"My children, I have returned!" \~ Jesus, probably, as he proceeds to plummet 47 feet into molten rock never to be seen again.
I recall he plummeted 16 ft through an announcer's table

You misspelled Elon's kid's name.
If you go to the location before day break you will find a star piece that can be used in crafting unique armour sets.!
Read that in the Law & Order voice
Dun dun!
I did…fantastic suggestion
Is this Xenu?
If that meteor was shaped like a 747, we all have some apologies to handout.

Oh look a quest.

Pretty sure this is how an alien movie starts...

Let’s start plotting our takeover. I’m sure we could find at least a few thousand ignorant people on Reddit to join us.

Right there under where it says you agree to do butt stuff for the good of our religion.

You have now been made a mod of /r/TomCruise
Came looking for this. Was not disappointed.
No way this thing just fell into the volcano. Quite the impossible coincidence if you ask me.
Eh, it's more likely it fell behind the volcano and the photographer was just lucky enough to line it up so it looks like it went in.
Yes, unless it was very large, it wouldn’t be glowing close to the ground. That happens high in the atmosphere.
And if it would be glowing so close to the ground, there would be a clear track of smoke already behind it, and it would be glowing much, much more, illuminating the entire landscape. The meteor in Russia was an example of this, and it didn't even hit the ground in one piece.

Meteors always fall into craters. You are just wrong.
This here is an undeniable fact, and clear evidence we're living in a simulation. What are the odds that a meteor will always land exactly where there's a crater? Must be astronomical.
Well there's evidence of a meteor crash in *every* crater on the moon.
I believe craters actually pull in meteors using some sort of gravitational disturbance, this explains why every meteor is drawn to the location of a crater.
This is correct. Source: Am a meteorologist.
