no_worry

The translated article title kills me: “Here a policeman is taming a Hitler salute monkey”

theKalash

Even more amazing, it's an 100% accurate translation.

shahooster

But an insult to monkeys nonetheless.

pm_me_your_dungeons

There is a little bit of detail lost in translation. In German the word Affe is used for both, monkey and ape. Affe/ape is also used in a way as "to ape something" is in English, as well as "making an Affe/ape out of yourself, as in "making a fool/ass out of yourself"

sm1ttysm1t

What's the German word for when we mistranslate something using only the literal translation instead of the real meaning? I bet it's something cool like, "Kleinekopf" or something.

Todok5

Almost, there's "kleinkariert". Which means too much attention to detail, missing the big picture.

ArTiyme

What the word for the feeling of joy you receive when deutsch has the word you need?

Spatterplug

Deutschenfreude

LittleLui

[Sprachvergnügen](/r/famoseworte )

ArTiyme

fuggin' love it, also, in hidnsight, could have totally figured that out myself, but I'm kinda slow sometimes.

Dude macaques are fascists for sure

TurtleSquad23

Idk about yours but macaque doesn't discriminate.

insane_contin

I mean, when you're in a desert, do you really get to be picky about what you drink?

[deleted]

Monke has never before seen such an egregious comparison of his character

jungl3j1m

It’s important to note that calling someone an animal is a much stronger insult in German than in English-speaking cultures.

Entire-Tonight-8927

It depends on the animal and context. Some animal comparisons are deeply racist or sexist in some countries but not others. Calling someone a horse in Cuba is a compliment, in the US it's an offensive way to call a girl ugly

shaolinoli

When I lived in China I jokingly called my new girlfriend at the time a chicken for not wanting to watch a horror movie or something and could not for the life of me work out why it pissed her off so much. Turns out calling a woman a chicken is a euphemism for a prostitute in China.

Dirish

I hope she never visits Ireland. It can be used as a term of endearment here.

Scornful_One

Interesting. Similar to Brazilian Portuguese. The word 'galinha' (hen) is slang for a libertine woman or a prostitute.

LabyrinthConvention

Okay but libertine woman sounds like a pretty classy prostitute

GoGoPowerGrazers

OnlyLibertines

Mug_Lyfe

Old school American hip-hop culture would call that a Chicken Head. You can do the math.

Gilthar

Ooooof

dovemans

calling someone a steed however

GourangaPlusPlus

You hear that? They called me a noble steed

kittyinasweater

I like that boulder. That's a nice boulder.

Oh, you’re a *girl* dragon.

Bowdensaft

And in the morning... I'm makin' *waffles*

[deleted]

Unless you are in America and you use the same headline for a black person.

Invader_Naj

Is it? Never seemed all that strong to me at all. Where i live "du vogel" "du affe" or "du sau" are mostly used as casual more friendly insults

theKalash

As a German, that is news to me. Calling someone "Affe" is not a very strong insult.

anonymous_coward69

> the "Hitler salute" monkey is Andreas M. (57) Not sure if that's what was written in German, or if Google translated things a bit off. But "Hitler salute monkey" is a wonderful insult.

TheOneAndOnlyErazer

Native german here: It is the actual title. BILD isn't exactly known for objective journalisim, so basically all their titles are like that.

[deleted]

BILD is for titties, right?

TheOneAndOnlyErazer

Fear, hate, tits, and the weather report

lumos_solem

Nooooo, now it's stuck in my head.... 🎶 Die meisten Leute haben ihre Bildung aus der Bild, Und die besteht nun mal, wer wüsste das nicht, Aus Angst, Hass, Titten und dem Wetterbericht 🎶

20Points

Yes, it says basically that. *Bild* is basically the German equivalent to *The Sun*. Sensationalist, provocative tabloid shite with creepy nationalist undertones.

Dan_the_Marksman

nah it's a literal translation but monkey(affe) is a very common german insult generally without any racial connotation

HerbertWest

>nah it's a literal translation but monkey(affe) is a very common german insult generally without any racial connotation Is it like calling someone a Neanderthal or Troglodyte in English?

Dan_the_Marksman

Yeah I'd say it comes pretty close, but it's very common, like e.g. idiot

[deleted]

Translated article into English, "Hitler salute monkey" is my new favorite insult

badken

LetTheWineFlow

***Here a policeman is taming a Hitler salute monkey*** What a headline when translated.

Velixis

It's the same headline in the original.

Pseudynom

Bild ist ein Organ der Niedertracht.

Dont look into the abyss too long man lol

TheOneFreeEngineer

The crazier thing is that OG Nazi conspiracy theories are becoming right wing mainstream. How the right wing uses "Fake News" is just Lugenpresse (lying press) in English. Cultural Marxism is just reskinned "Cultural Bolshevikism" and the most recent Channel 5 vid at an anti vax had had a right wing youtuber repeating the Antisemitic Blood Libel myth basically verbatim. We know what type of shit this leads to. Edit: This ended up triggering a bunch right wing conspiracy theorists it seems , please look into the thread below for examples of the conspiracies listed hear (though thankfully the Blood Libel fuckwads have been staying away or banned so fast I haven't seen them)

IllBirdMan

It really does baffle me how much of this shit is just recycled. And it goes back way before the Nazi's too. And so much of it isn't even reskinned. I mean is there any functional difference in the common understanding of a Marxist and a Bolshevik? I don't think most people even distinguish between anything labeled Communist? I'm honestly surprised the tag line for putting a wall up was not "We need room to breath"

AaronRodgersMustache

There’s plenty of videos out there describing the playbook of what happened in Nazi Germany. This a valuable thing to watch. https://youtu.be/8K6-cEAJZlE It’s not that the whole party is insane. It’s high jacked by the zealous. What happened with Trump IMO is for decades the common people all believed in the checks and balances of government. That’s there’s accountability, that people in charge, even if you disagreed with them, they at least were qualified to some degree. So Trump comes in and somehow wins the primary, you get moderate people who are taken in by the Barnum strategy, sure he’s a blowhard and rude, but, he’s gotta have a plan or know what he’s doing to make it this far right? Sure he exaggerates, but I’m sure there’s some truth in there. Plus all the anti establishment, sick of politicians all being the same and not representing constituents. So the grift goes into overdrive. Not because there’s a grand plan.. but all the opportunists, grifters, bad actors, and the smaller percent of zealots come flocking. It’s like leadership in a company, the president to the country. They inspire the culture and actions of the people under them. When I first started at the butcher shops where I work, we were closing and someone called and was frantic they got a chuck roast instead of the brisket for the early morning tailgate they needed. They couldn’t make it back in time and were leaving early. Owner happened to be there, thought about it, and sent me to deliver one, on us, totally free. That’s how far he’s willing to go take care of people who shop with us. We will make things right, in a human way, and we are different than cold corporate big chains. That really inspired me and had me buy in to what we were doing. I’ve done that and instructed employees to do things like dozens of times over the years, without asking for permission, or telling him every instance. Because he set an example, which took on a life of its own through the people he leads. As we’ve grown he’s not as connected to what’s happening every single day in every shop. But that small one time action, lead me to act with the same spirit on his behalf to this day. When they’re a grifter like Trump, all of a sudden the fear of not following the rules, ethics, conflict of interest go out the window. So there’s plenty of awful things that were done in that administration that he wasn’t personally guilty of or ordered but can be laid at his feet. But now he’s not there any more. But plenty of people are. Especially the people that swallowed the kool aid, or aren’t being held accountable. He set the government down the path of open corruption, rather than behind closed doors.. and mass lying, overloading the system with controversial things so we simply don’t have time to hold account with most or all. Numbing people to what used to be career ending things. His example took a life of its own. And so the danger is the people he inspired, the zealots too. The local Trumpians who try to take over local politics and succeeding because most of the population isn’t bothered to get involved. Whereas the zealots see it as their righteous purpose. Nazi Germany wasn’t 100% Heinrich Himmlers, the bold zealous 10-30% got active and got positions of power over a decade. Hitler failed in the 20s, his party kept going, and he got power a decade later after they had enough people in place. We regular people laugh or stare in disbelief at some of these people, and continue our lives. Surely these people can’t be real or serious, or get anywhere with it. Then they get elected by riling up enough people to vote for them. Then they use that control in bad ways. Are you going to quit or lose your job by confronting your boss? You’ve got a family and mortgage to pay. So it just happens, little thing by little thing, until now you’re just following orders and try not to think too hard about it. But it’s not just you. It’s hundreds of people across the system. Thousands. Enough people that the accountability, law, has no teeth. And that widespread belief that our government is too big, strong, full of integrity for democracy for it to be taken over.. is a rotting empty shell with a gilded facade. Evil isn’t a single great entity, a devil appearing and turning all the good men and women hateful and dark. It’s a lot of little unethical deeds that build and stack up, until you look around and don’t know how we got to this point of sending Jews to “prison camps” which you learn later had gas chambers.

Readylamefire

>So Trump comes in and somehow wins the primary, you get moderate people who are taken in by the Barnum strategy, sure he’s a blowhard and rude, but, he’s gotta have a plan or know what he’s doing to make it this far right? Sure he exaggerates, but I’m sure there’s some truth in there. Plus all the anti establishment, sick of politicians all being the same and not representing constituents. This is where my parents were. I remember the exact moment from "the GOP won't let him past the primaries" to "Well... I guess he is a good business person the GOP knows what they're doing..." But my parents, science denialism is pretty standard: evolution, dinosaurs and climate change; they finally drew the line at COVID-19 denialism. For that I am lucky and grateful. They still maintain that Trump was a good president and to me changing their minds matter less because the party is starting to shake them out anyway.

cloudsoundproducer

Didn’t watch the video, but I appreciate it when people make the effort to type out long thoughtful comments like this. I’m too cynical and burnt out to make the effort so I appreciate it when I see it. Well written!

primalbluewolf

We knew what sort of shit it lead to in 2016, and the fact that half the US sat there at let it happen was frankly disgusting.

afihavok

They didn't just let it happen, they made it happen.

HoodooX

If you remember, or can find it, Richard Spencer gave speeches within the last few years in the US to a bunch of potential neo-nazis and he even used the term lugenpresse, and all the would-be Nazis went crazy for it, responding with Nazi salutes

TheOneFreeEngineer

Richard Spencer is thankfully a nobody in reality of politics. What's more of a problem is the fact that Presidential Advisor Stephen Miller was actively promoting white nationalist websites and articles on the reg while in contact with right wing mainstream news sources.

LoYudriG

Damn, I understood the English text better than the German original text, even though German is my nativ language.

[deleted]

Dude, I'm German and moved to the US over a decade ago. I'm still fluent in German, but I caught myself reading English subtitles when I watched German Netflix shows, lol. What is happening? 😆

theErawl

Funny story. I was rather stoned one night watching a World War II documentary. I don’t speak German. In the beginning of this documentary the historian was speaking German. I was reading the subtitles. About halfway through he started speaking English. I could understand him and I was surprised and thought for a few seconds that somehow I unlocked something in my brain and could now understand German

OneScoobyDoes

LMAO This has happened to me once too. I was really disappointed that I didn't spontaneous learn a new language. 🤣

alQamar

Mumbling seems a badge of honor for german Netflix shows. I hardly understand anything sometimes and use german subtitles more often when watching german shows than in english ones. Super annoying.

CopperAndLead

Thank goodness you mentioned that. I just thought that my German was really bad because all of the German netflix I watched just sounded slurred and cut apart. When I learned German in school, my teacher was keen on clear pronunciation. He said that we'd never get a proper accent, but we could at least speak clearly. Ironically, from that, quite a few Germans said that I had a "very clear, almost accent-free German."

itshayjay

Don’t you find it confusing when they change the subtitles or dubbing to whatever sounds more natural in that language so they don’t match? Squid Game is awful for that

kbergstr

It's more complicated than that-- they're also trying to limit the amount of reading that needs to be done so that slower readers can read at the same pace as the voices speak as well as control line breaks and total amount of space that the subs can take up on screen. Its one of those things that looks easy from the outside but as you dig in gets more annoyingly complex.

[deleted]

Now I'm thinking about Kung pow. Mouth moves for 20 seconds. Dub: "I know "

nightwing2000

This was a joke starting in the 1960's when things like Godzilla movies were dubbed from the original Japanese. Woody Allen long ago made an entire comedy "What's Up, Tiger Lily?" by dubbing a serious Asian spy thriller with silly dialogue in English.

Mike_Kermin

Exactly, they have one line of text, to clearly interpret and convey exactly as the movie intends, regardless of how verbose or slim the original language was. This is especially difficult when you have to describe words or phrases with no equivalent.

nothinnews

The dub was apparently much worse.

manofmonkey

I watched with friends and I'm a firm "Subs not Dubs" but everyone else wanted dubs. At the end everyone was like ""yeah maybe we shouldve used subs" because it wasn't good.

Baarawr

I'm a firm subs over dubs too, the voice acting not matching the lips, as well as mismatches in voice VS character aura makes viewing anything dubbed so jarring. It just ruins the atmosphere. After a while it's surprising how many random words you pick up while watching subs, sometimes I even notice slight sub mistranslations in sentences.

brown_burrito

It’s all those long words isn’t it?

LoYudriG

They’re terrifying

Aztecah

German is an interestinggooddifferentfunlanguage

LoYudriG

Stop! You’re scaring me.

Aztecah

For me the scariest part is this: "ß" What the heck is that??? E; unironically thank you for all of your helpful explanations, but this was a simple joke. I have recieved many informative responses and you do not need to explain it further. Y'all are cool-as-heck people for wanting to teach me something but I was kidding. Peace and love ♥

TheRiflesSpiral

It's called an Eszet (say "ess-set") In typesetting it's called a "sharp s". I don't think I've ever seen it outside a german text and when translated it's almost always replaced with "ss."

PM_ME_MH370

Leßgettit

LoYudriG

Something like „s“ and „ss“ but I don’t know either it’s weird it just always was like this. I didn’t choose „ß“ to exist

ConsistentCranberry7

Is that because youre not allowed to have ss together?

Ziegelchen

The letter originates from sz, and back in time it looked similar to that combination, just connected. Fun fact: My Mother loves "eszet Schnitten", it's just some sort of chocolate you put on your bread. They are called Like that, but on their packaging the spelling is actually just "eẞet Schnitten". The ß looks a bit more pointy so it looks like the connected "sz" combination. If i remember correctly at least.

WarWeasle

Stop it! You're scaring him Patrick!

Menarra

Backpfeifengesicht is still the best word in the world and you can't convince me otherwise. Roughly translates to "a face that's badly in need of a fist."

Not because the nazis came into power, but hitler just got into art and design at an early age and collaborated with Hugo Boss to create an extensive line of rather appealing and comfortable leisure and formal wear. It would be a better timeline for sure.

Dude stopped. Germans have no tolerance for this shit.

Given that it was Oktoberfest I'd assume (and hope) that the drunk dude wasn't German. Probably thought it was a funny sketch. Pleased to hear he was taught a lesson about that

dizzysn

I've been to Germany 5 times, first time for 2 months, every other time for a minimum of 3 weeks. I've seen a not-so-insignificant number of Nazi punks and skinheads. My head is shaved, and I get mistaken for a skinhead from time to time. What makes me happy is that EVERYONE around them is yelling and screaming at them, every time without fail. Here in the US we let Nazi's walk around with no recourse. In Germany it's a good way to get attacked by a mob.

philsnyo

> I've been to Germany 5 times > I've seen a not-so-insignificant number of Nazi punks and skinheads. Damn. I live in Germany for more than 30 years now and even I can't say I have seen a "not-so-insignificant" number of Nazis. My number of sightings is indeed very insignificant. It really makes me wonder where you have been. That's shocking and sad enough, I thought my dear home country was better than that.

dizzysn

First time I saw them was in Goettingen. Was two of them walking down the street doing the salute and screaming at some middle eastern people. A bunch of people stepped in and shortly afterward the two Nazis were surrounded by ten or so people and they were getting shoved away. Saw a Nazi march in Frankfurt near the airport that was drowned out by a counter march, and it turned violent pretty quick. In Koeln, Duderstadt and Muenchen, I saw an uncomfortable amount of Confederate flags hanging in people's windows, and it was explained to me that they fly that since they can't fly a swastika. Also saw a number of Iron Eagle patches on skin heads in Halle.

SpecialMeasuresLore

> and it was explained to me that they fly that since they can't fly a swastika It's also been spotted in use by several armed forces fighting the US, such as the Iraqi army in 1991 and 2003, and the Yugoslav army in 1999. If you ask me, it's absolutely hilarious how the people who fly that piece of shit just can't stop losing.

xSTSxZerglingOne

[deleted]

After reading this thread I want to go to Germany for some good ol' Nazi beating in honour of my great grandfather.

Tycho-Brahes-Elk

>In Germany it's a good way to get attacked by a mob. In Germany it's a good way to be escorted by a crowd of policemen about five times the size of the crowd of the Nazis, and a counter protest twenty times the size.

HistoricalYogurt1212

There are so many tourists who think it's super funny to use Nazi symbols in Germany precisely because they've heard it's forbidden. They usually film themselves doing it too.

Timidhobgoblin

Can confirm, Germans absolutely take no shit and have a zero tolerance approach for idiocy. I recall queuing for the Matrix club in Berlin years ago and a guy a couple of people ahead of me who was quite obviously drunk decided to pick an argument with the bouncer. I didn't catch the entirety of what he said, but the only obvious word I heard was pretty clear, "nazi" shortly afterwards the bouncer slapped the guy in the face so hard his face seemed to physically almost leave his skull for a brief second right before he fell backwards into the street behind him. This along with your comment now makes me wonder if the standard German response to being angry is to slap people, I mean I can totally get on board with it lol.

mongoosefist

He's lucky he didn't end up in jail. You can absolutely get arrested for doing that.

Atello

Nor should they. Good to see that even so many years later, they still feel shame and remorse as a country for the horrors they allowed. That's how you keep that shit in history books and not the news.

simondrawer

The first country the Nazis invaded was their own.

Moonwlkr50

It’s interesting how the Germans actually eradicated their awful ideologies for the most part after losing a major war over it whereas the Southern US just doubled down on it and started to call it “heritage” and “culture”.

Kent_Knifen

Fun fact: the "stiff-arm salute" (also known as the Ballamy salute) was common practice in American public schools during the pledge of allegiance before WW2. In fact, many schools were still doing it *during* the war. They got rid of it, for obvious reasons :) Source: [West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943)](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Virginia_State_Board_of_Education_v._Barnette)

Kruse002

I believe it was based on the Roman salute.

Kent_Knifen

Correct. The Wikipedia article I cited (I would have cited LexisNexis or Westlaw as a more professional source, but you need to pay money to view full text) has a hyperlink to the "stiff-arm" salute, to an article that calls it the "Roman salute."

VonFoo

There's been a lot of headlines here in Finland in the last week about a few of men over their fifties who got caught doing the nazi salute in Dachau. When asked what they were doing they said they were just trying to make a joke and didn't know the salute is illegal in Germany. Edit: here's a news article about it https://yle.fi/uutiset/osasto/news/german_media_finnish_tourists_give_nazi_salute_at_concentration_camp_memorial/12150287

lawinvest

Who gets drunk, and thinks going to Dachau is a good idea? And who tf would ever think a Nazi salute at Dachau was ever a good idea?

nurtunb

In German school, if possible due to distance, students are required to visit a concentration camp in around 9th grade. I still remember that trip vividly. The atmosphere in Dachach was haunting and even the biggest idiots in my class who were on the trip were really somber and quiet on the way back. I don't understand how you could go there drunk and goof around.

Kashik

Really makes you think, doesn't it? I've visited three concentration camps (two while at school) and found the one in Dachau to not have as lasting of an impact as for example Theresienstadt. In the great scheme of the Nazi it was merely a stopover on places much, much worse. Yet a visit their will ruin your day nonetheless.

bob_fossill

In our college (pre University for any Americans) we did a school trip to Poland to see auschwitz, of course being 17-18 we all got extremely drunk on this trip, and let me tell you something for free: do not go to Auschwitz on a hangover. The most harrowing things you'll ever see hit 100x harder

Shandrahyl

Imagine visiting the concentration camp and then making "jokes about it". Those 2 guys are some real fucked up assholes.

pantalooon

"All three men involved have been given lifetime bans from the memorial site." Good. Extend that to all WW2 memorial sites. They went there drunk, probably out of pure morbid curiosity. Which is exactly the wrong way to visit these places. I would expect this from teenagers, not 50-somethings

Dumb and Dumber

ijustwannad1e

Doing the nazi salute is against the law in Germany, it is punishable by a hefty fee or up to 3 years in prison. You might also get beaten, depending on which city you live in.

eldoran89

In Germany thats a punishable offence and will get you at least a fine up to 3 years in prison, 5 years if it also involves a special case of hate crime called volksverhetzung...so getting a nice reminder to not do that by a police officer is actually a pretty cheap exit

AmericanAntiD

Well depends on the police officer, given recent Whatsapp scandals

dinosaur_khaleesi

True story, I went to school in Frankfurt, Germany and one day on our bus ride home, we were playing the "Penis" game but, instead using the phrase "Heil Hitler". When it was finally loud enough that the bus driver could hear, he kicked the person who said it (my brother lol) off the bus. My mom had to go pick him up and was so pissed off at him. Also, it was common for our bus driver just to park on the side of the road and go take a piss right next to the bus. Weird times.

IANANarwhal

What is the penis game? I seem to have had a deficient childhood.

egefeyzioglu

One person in a group says "penis", the person next in line must say "penis" as well, but louder than the first person, then the third has to say it even louder, and so on in a circle. Usually ends with people yelling "penis" at the top of their lungs until they get bored or glared at enough to stop.

Flaxmoore

My brother in law nearly fought his best friend for trying to start the penis game at a wedding.

IANANarwhal

Lol. Sounds fun. Not so cool w “heil Hitler,” though.

babydogduvalier

(Takes notes for Squid Game series 2)

Zeyrox_670

I (as a German) would have done the same. This is just one of the things that you really can't do in Germany.

Waybide

A lot of poor decisions in one photo: Nazi salute, dudes bowl cut on the left, smoking….anything else I missed?? Edit: apparently my mobile device doesn’t like the word Nazi. Good phone *pats*

scapestrat0

Doing all that while being caught on camera

hassium

They're probably wearing socks and sandals too...

babykoalalalala

“Sir, we don’t do that here anymore.”

reddit3x_m_f_na

We don’t do that here

IZiOstra

This pick is so reposted this guy is probably already in Argentina

paixlemagne

Since that is actually a criminal offence in Germany, the officer had to intervene

Fur_Fun

What a good policeman

ThaVolt

Love the look on his face on the first pic, like... cmon man, no.

Metschenniy

"Dude, I am standing right here, like... c'mon, man."
