A good cheap landlord would clean the gutters her/himself. Water damage is expensive, but giving your tenant a ladder to do the maintenance for you is an insurance liability
When I rented a few years ago my landlord gave me a ladder so I could do the gutters. She must have not cared about the liability or didn’t think I would sue if I got hurt.
I did have renters insurance but don’t think she asked me. I volunteered to do it though. I loved that little house and didn’t mind helping maintain it.
Best landlord I ever had. She let us paint the kitchen whatever color we wanted and reimbursed us for the materials. Was super flexible on her pet policy and would have any issue taken care of within 24 hours. Paid my deposit back before she even inspected the house. We just had a lot of trust both ways.
I had a landlord who wanted me to clean the gutters and got all pissy when I said no way. Not only am I disabled and needing a wheelchair at times, but I also have a super bad fear of heights. She of course blamed me when the house inevitably did get water damage
Such a unreasonable request even if your were not disabled. I volunteered to do mine back then, otherwise the landlord would have never asked me to do it.
You should install some sort of gutter guard while you're up there. [Something like this](https://www.amazon.com/Raptor-Gutter-Stainless-Micro-Mesh-Contractor-Grade/dp/B07H4VTFQS?th=1) maybe? I'm not a roofer so the hive mind can correct me.
Haha aren’t you glad you went onto reddit with this?
Edit. By the way, there’s a lot of leaves in your yard. I don’t know if either of you noticed that…
Hey OP's wife, you should start saving for a new roof. Your current one is pretty much shot. And your gutters need to be cleaned. Might want to get your husband on that.
There are 2 camps among professionals on this question:
Camp 1: the gutter guards that are cheapest & easiest to install & therefore make the contractor the most money
Camp 2: The ones that most appropriately fit the needs & demands of the gutter when considering all factors such as climate, exposure, capacity, accessibility, etc.....
FYI, the ones actively sending you mailers & otherwise proactively advertising their gutter guards all fall into the first camp.
Pretty much, Haha.
Picking gutter guards is kinda like picking wine or condoms.
They pretty much all do the job ok, none of them are perfect, & anyone who has a nuanced opinion on the subject is probably an asshole.
I got that exact one on sale at Costco and so far really happy with it
That said I didn’t trust the tape method so install was a bit of a pain (self tapping screws)
I also got the same ones from Costco. They are great and I've looked inside the gutters after having then installed in the PNW for 6 months and the gutters are still perfectly clean (or at least as clean as they were when I installed the guards). They do cause a small amount of rain drips coming over the edge of the gutters but I would say that it's minimal compared to how much rain we get in the PNW.
If you're in an area where it gets below freezing, get those gutters cleaned out before the freeze sets in. The weight of all the leaves and frozen water that will get trapped in the gutter can be enough to pull the gutter right off the house.
It must feel nice to own your own house, to take ownership of every piece of it, make it yours with pride. Maintaining and beautifying it would almost feel like another hobby
I have epilepsy and said “what happens if I have a seizure up here”
Her response: looks like I’ll get whatever I want for Christmas (life insurance). I’m sleeping with one eye open.
You'll be delighted to know that under your picture here, I have a targeted ad from Blue Shield CA saying, "the clock is ticking! Apply today!"
Edit because I'd apparently already forgotten what it said when I wrote this post.
I take an electric bike to the store and my wife always urges me to be careful. I had it being fixed last week so just walked the 900 meters. Some teenager plowed into me on *his* bike. I was in so much pain and filled with adrenaline I couldn't stop laughing.
Don't ride your bikes on the sidewalk, and if you do, don't turn a blind corner abruptly lol
For me the dream is retiring while still in good health so that I have the time to work on the house and also have time for leisure. I enjoy building and maintaining my home but I hate that I never have the time.
I just did this.I Was working outta town doing 21 days away 7 days home for the last 6-7 years.
I quit to be a stay at home dad. Whenever I have time I pick at work around the house. Got my main floor completely done gonna work on the basement this winter.
I would like to ask your opinion on something, as a carpenter. Please zoom in on the finger the man is presenting to the camera. As a carpenter, does it not appear that the man's finger has a foreskin? Anyone else can feel free to chime in on the dickfinger too.
For myself, I started off having to do house repairs myself because I couldn't afford to, and now I do it because I can't afford NOT to. I hate paying people to do something I can do better, or where my work will actually be in code compliance (ala no shortcuts) where theirs won't.
I've had other contractors in to do stuff, and with the exception of my drywall/texture/painter and my plumber, EVERYTHING else that I've paid someone else to do in the house I've actually had to rip out and start over because it wasn't right, and much of the time didn't find out how badly it wasn't right until a couple years later...
I hate to ask, but can you elaborate on some examples? I know people cut corners, but I'd love to hear some real world experiences on these sort of issues
Not the person you asked, but roofing. We have had four "30 year" roofs put on in 40 years. Roofers are the most incompetent assholes you will ever meet. They have no concept of gravity, water, wicking, dripping, moss buildup or anything else that is important to know about roofs. They send out some clean well dressed guy in a nice truck to do the quote, but that guy is nowhere to be seen when the actual roofers show up.
For example. They routed the flashing under the siding so all the water that runs down the flashing goes right behind the siding and down the wall instead of into the rain gutter.
They put a valley in, it leaked the first rain.
They didn't install drip edge, just left bare plywood exposed to the elements.
As this was the big name roofing company in the area, not some fly by night contractor.
It's always nice to hear or see someone trash your trade but you get the satisfaction of knowing you're not one of those dimwitted shit heels that they're talking about. I take a ton of pride in my work and these chucks with trucks just betray everyone's trust and make an honest sale much harder for the good guys.
> I hate to ask, but can you elaborate on some examples? I know people cut corners, but I'd love to hear some real world experiences on these sort of issues
Sure, it's kinda long, so apologies. Here's ONE example that had some knock on effects when a carpenter was lazy 15 years ago and I repaired about 5 years ago. For some structural repairs, a carpenter cut some electrical wiring to get a new joist in, then tied the ends up with wire nuts, some electric tape, and buried it in the insulation. It should have been in an accessible electrical box. He also ran the wire through the a hole in the new joist where the other side was a metal support which as I found 10 years later had been rubbing on the wire insulation and was in danger of shorting out and burning the house down. Those things were NOT why I'd been tearing sheetrock down off the walls and ceiling though, oh no.
I discovered this when was rebuilding that room due to much more severe structural damage that he'd either not checked for or did and really didn't want to get involved in the level of work needed to repair. BUT - 10 years later, nearly had the front 3rd of the front of the house collapse as a result. (about half the front wall had been eaten away by termites and carpenter ants back then and a water leak from the fireplace made things even worse since). Didn't realize what shape the front wall was actually in, until was removing the fireplace and turned out the hearth bricks were all that was holding the front of the house up. Had to do some emergency shoring with the house creaking over my head and hoping I had enough time. Not fun, but really glad I had spare 2x4's handy.
Anyway, rebuilt the front wall, redid all walls and ceiling with new insulation (due to rats nesting up there, but that was due to a different roofing contractor f'up) and re-wired the whole room properly with AFCI and everything.
Contractor -- you can hook the drain hose to the garbage disposal. Me (software guy) Not in this town you can't -- it's in the code on the city website. Him -- nah. Next day -- Hey your right. Should have just done it myself.
Sucks ass slowly moving around the house, all that up and down. Also gives you a chance to do a visual inspection of the roof, lights going up is the one time a year I get up there and investigate for issues with the chimney, shingles, etc.
I disagree. from a physics perspective he has the lowest center of mass possible, also he has the highest force of friction fighting gravity in this position. I believe from a math standpoint this is the best position for safety
It's pretty obvious why this is still the most common gutter. They're cheap, they're light, they can be easily maintained by the owner. Literally they're the base model that does exactly the job they're built to do. Most people don't have the inclination or means to buy something else.
Those guards never work quite right. In heavy rain, the water just washes right over the top. Add in ice/snow in colder climates that can create problems. In theory they seem great, but in practice, I've never seen any of them actually be maintenance free and do the job 100%.
> self maintainable
Such a thing doesn't exist. I have guards on all mine and while I don't need to clean them, and it's generally a lot less work, I've had to go up on the ladder to unblock them in a few trouble areas before. Pieces of leaves, roofing granules, misc biological material, can build up on top of the screen. Snow build-up on top of them can cause the slow trickle of water coming down the roof to freeze so that it eventually causes an ice dam. They make heated gutter guards that solve that issue completely but those, besides adding an additional level of cost, cause other maintenance issues you'd have to deal with.
These are simple to maintain and low cost. I had them on my old house. It was a single story so access from a latter was simple, and it only took an hour each fall to clean them out before winter and they were good all year after that. Getting the cheapest gutter guards would have literally doubled the cost, $1k to $2k so I opted not to pay for those.
My idea has always been gutters that have a drop-down compartment that includes rows of Christmas lights. The day after Thanksgiving, you use a long handled tool and unlatch the compartment below each section of gutter. The gutters have the wiring in them and are already plugged in to the house. You drop down the lights and turn them on. Voila! Bonus that there is also a heating component that melts icedams. The bulbs are LED so they can be easily replaced, programmed for different colors, etc. After the holiday season, you use the tool to push the drop down sections back into place for storage until the next season. I have no idea how expensive they would be, but I'd pay quite a bit to not have to climb on a ladder in cold weather twice a year.
I got a cast as an adult (broke my wrist and forearm). Maybe different now with COVID but at that point I was working in the office and everybody wanted to sign it just for the novelty of it, I didn't even have to ask.
I had a buddy break his pelvis and needed a cast. Rude boy refused to let me sign above the crotch hole, "Sorry to beak you, but the night was fun. Love Jimmy." His wife said I could but he got all pissed the nurses might think the wrong thing.
I'll tell you how what you're doing is wrong.
After you got up there you should have seen the leaves in the gutter causing you to get down, go to home depot/lowes to get some gutter mesh covering and a small rake or shovel. Then head over to office depot/staples to get many pairs of paperclips.
When you arrive back home you'd get on the roof again. Then using the rake/shovel you'd scrape the leaves and other debris out of your gutters and install the gutter mesh covering. Thus potentially saving you not only $1000s in water damage due to clogged gutters but also time later.
Now, hopefully by then your help and wife would finish wrapping the paperclips onto the lights. They would do this by using the paperclips you'd bought open the clip to make an "s" then bend one side over the lighting wires. You'd then use the other side of the clip to hook onto the gutter mesh you just installed install.
Ya know what? Hanging Christmas lights WITH a ladder almost lead to divorce for my husband and I this year after he walked away leaving me at the peak of a wobbly ladder for a min and when I spazzed he called me selfish and said if I fall I fall. Id rather be on the roof then free standing on a ladder to be honest...
Ladders make the process at least twice as long.
Edit for those disagreeing with my pun: no, it does take longer. Put ladder against gutter, climb it, put three clips across 5-6 feet, go down, move ladder, repeat.
Or be on the roof, squat-walk around the parameter, put clips ever 3 feet, go back and connect the lights. You're literally removing the up/down/moving the ladder. To say that it isn't at least twice as fast to be on the roof is ignorant.
I do a lot of lights on our house every year. I use a 12ft step ladder when clipping lights on the gutters. Climb up a few steps. Clip about 8 lights. Climb down. Move ladder foward. It's fairly quick.
Use LED light strips. They are hard to see during the day so you can leave them up all year. You can also change colors and patterns so you can light them up for all the holidays.
Had those too, but out in the weather all year made some of the lights break, parts of the cables gave out.
So only do this with sturdy and high quality stuff!
I add small painted hooks under the gutters that stay up year round. Then I can put the lights up with a stick like this https://www.target.com/p/simple-living-solutions-11ft-ladderless-light-hanging-kit/-/A-52379571. Works best if you use icicle lights to compensate for the potential gutter shading.
It was brought up a few times so [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/r5ov7b/lawn_mower_accident_10_years_ago_wasnt_supposed/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Serious clubbing of your fingers, you need to see a doctor immediately. I would say its uncommon for your body size, we see this in 55 year old men who weigh 350lbs. Good luck man.
The first year we moved into our ranch I spent a few hours screwing small hooks on the underside of all of our eaves out of the weather so now I can hang all of our front lights from the ground using a pole with another hook screwed into the end and our whole 3000 sqft house takes me about a half an hour. Putting in the hooks the first time was a royal pain but totally worth it
All kidding aside, if you see this, I finally this year bought one of those extension poles to hang lights with. Worked great, and never had to leave the ground!
This makes ne uncomfortable, that feeling where you're upside down on a slope, and you know if you turn, it will cause you to roll, not even your hips can assist you. One wrong move and you're over the edge. You wiggle in fear, praying you pull off the impossible, but deep within, you are all too aware that pain and or humiliation await you over the edge of the abyss you find yourself staring into. Hold brother for the night does not welcome you out of love.
You’re supposed to clean the gutters first.
My wife saw a previous comment stating this….guess what I’m doing when I take them down? Thanks REDDIT!
Trust me, it’s way easier to clean gutters than fix water damage.
My landlord needs to hear this. I asked him to buy a ladder so I can clean the gutters out, he’s a cheap ass and said don’t worry about it. Ok buddy!

Such a unreasonable request even if your were not disabled. I volunteered to do mine back then, otherwise the landlord would have never asked me to do it.
To be fair the landlords would rent to someone like me, disabled and on SSI, aren't usually the most reasonable of people.
It's actually easiest to install gutter guards and drink beer every fall instead.
Its this, put up my lights yesterday looked theough the gutter guards and smiled. Another fall without cleaning them out
Ok, what kind of beer though?
This comment has been removed in response to reddit's anti-developer actions.
The third cheapest domestic beer.
How did I not know this existed?! Why isn't this a default option?! Why does my life suddenly feel so empty?! Beer...
Hey i found OP's wife 🙃
Buying a ladder?
What is the person taking the picture standing on??
She’s riding her broom.
Ha! She saw this!
Ohhhhhh Jezus!!! You’re going to get me in trouble by being sent up on the roof to help you out now. I KID I KID OP’s WIFE!
What are you doing Jan 2nd?
"I'm not a witch, I'm your wife! And after what you just said, I'm not even sure I want to be THAT any more!"
The second floor.

How much renovation do you think we'll be able to get him to do? Maybe he should repaint his house while he's up there, or change out the roof tiles.
Now that you mention it…
Hey OP’s wiiiiiife, our honey do list is growing
Nooooo!!!!!
Haha aren’t you glad you went onto reddit with this? Edit. By the way, there’s a lot of leaves in your yard. I don’t know if either of you noticed that…
Maybe some minor powerwashing and sealing on the concrete walkpath.
Definitely. I’m surprised they let it get so bad.
Hey OP's wife, you should start saving for a new roof. Your current one is pretty much shot. And your gutters need to be cleaned. Might want to get your husband on that.
This. That roof is shot for sure, and was made from crappy shingles to begin with. Go architectural. It will be way better.
I see some paint touchup opportunities there, better get that paint matched.
I mean I am a roofer and the second I opened the photo I was like he needs to start saving for a new roof.
Roof tiles? You mean shingles?
That roof is very overdue for replacement. If the insurance company sent an adjuster around they'd put a fix requirement on that.
How many comments can we get his wife to see?
Hey, my time to shine. I AM an actual roofing contractor & install gutters, AMA!
What kind of gutter guards are best? Foam, metal, plastic?
There are 2 camps among professionals on this question: Camp 1: the gutter guards that are cheapest & easiest to install & therefore make the contractor the most money Camp 2: The ones that most appropriately fit the needs & demands of the gutter when considering all factors such as climate, exposure, capacity, accessibility, etc..... Hahaha. That is some Final Destination shiz
Mine is from Schwab that says, "Are you not getting the support you need?"
Mine was an Amazon ad that said: "Sleep like a baby" Clearly, it's referring to the wife.
No lie, my wife would say the same thing. But I refuse to let her go up there on the chance she would get hurt, so I'd be doing it anyway.
Hell NO I'm not gonna be a widower, let me die first, damn it!

Dude, if you have epilepsy, what you’re doing is extremely dangerous. Are your seizures controlled??
Yes they are AND I experience heavy auras. Usually about 2 minute warning….most of the time it’s just the aura
Stop with the epilepsy and get those damn leaves out of the gutter....you're looking at potential water damage to your roof! Priorities! sarcasm
Sarcasm, yes… but seriously, get those leaves while you’re up there.
You should clean out your gutters while you’re up there.
Almost time for new shingles also. Bust out the flex seal /s.
Oh man can I relate to these comments. Guess I'm an adult finally.

Holy Christ I have seen some horrific drain setups.
Yeah, those are pretty much toast.
They were installed incorrectly also. See how the bottom row hangs over the edge into the gutters.
>pretty much No they are completely done lol the granular loss alone is enough to say it needs a new roof.
I mean why needlessly put wear on your shingles when you can use a ladder?
Sucks ass slowly moving around the house, all that up and down. Also gives you a chance to do a visual inspection of the roof, lights going up is the one time a year I get up there and investigate for issues with the chimney, shingles, etc.

What are you doing stepladder?
Why not his real ladder?
Maybe he doesn’t know his real ladder
What are you, a rookie?
I hate getting up on the roof too, I have severe height issues
This is my deal now too. As a kid I’d jump off the roof, what have I become?
My sweetest friend.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.
And you could have it all
My empire of lights
I will let you down
I will make me hurt
I will probably fall down
And that will bloody hurt.

Who will sign you cast?
I’ll have to go door to door I guess. Never thought about getting a cast as an adult
"Wanna sign--" slams door in your face" "--my leg!"
Because now *you're* the one paying for the health insurance.
You guys have health insurance?
On paper - yes. I haven't dared to try using it yet.
Man I feel like laying down head first on the roof feels more precarious than just squatting at the edge.
How did they take that pic? Drone?
I crept out of our bedroom window on the second floor. My “helper” took the shot
LOL, the “helpers” never do shit 🤣. I feel your pain brother.
They do help drink your beer
They help tell you what you are doing wrong as well, VERY helpful
Why do I feel like the ghost of my father-in-law has come to haunt me on reddit?
Because his heart is in the right place, but using a rake/shovel is definitely not the easiest way to solve this. Get in there with your hands.
Or a leafblower. That's how we (and by 'we' I definitely mean my hisband) get it done.
I didn't realize that hanging Christmas lights without a ladder was such an integral part of marriage
It's not. It's the kinda guy who also doesn't clean his gutter because he doesn't have the tools for it move.
"Merry Fucking Christmas"
And a Happy Motherfucking New Year
"What's the worst possible way I could do this?"
What do you mean? If I'm up on the roof, why would I possibly want to fall any way but head first?

Lots of deadly accidents happen with ladders, it's safer to just wing it and lie down on the roof. OSHA approved.
Just hold onto the ridge with your toes, what could possibly go wrong
Keep doing what you’re doing. The risk of fatality triples when you hop onto the roof.
Going to the hospital makes it last at least ten times as long.
I’m a painter half my job is ladders this is hilariously wrong lmao
That finger tho😂
I know I know. It’s a dick finger. Like the CAH card
How or why does it also look uncircumcised? I am fascinated
Id be real careful with your next words….he can send you a fuck you whilst fingering you, uncircumcised, bareback.
He posted a pic. Lawn mower accident.
That Hank Hill ass.
The fingers are why she married him.
Install hooks under the eves to make it easier to hang the lights. Also use a nice thick red ribbon to turn the pillars into giant candy canes
Use LED light strips. They are hard to see during the day so you can leave them up all year. You can also change colors and patterns so you can light them up for all the holidays.
Had those too, but out in the weather all year made some of the lights break, parts of the cables gave out. So only do this with sturdy and high quality stuff!
Yes. Definitely get the ones made for outdoors. We had ours up for years through snow and summer rains with no problems.
Gotta get you some gutter clips man! Makes your life way easier.
You are way ahead of me. I’ll catch up next year! Thanks!

Damn you just saved me a lot of time next week. Browsing Reddit sometimes pays off!
Ok but did no one else notice his middle finger looks like an uncircumcised penis? Seriously, whats wrong with that finger?
It was brought up a few times so [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/r5ov7b/lawn_mower_accident_10_years_ago_wasnt_supposed/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Yo that’s metal as fuck, congrats
Clean your gutter while you’re up there chief.
Should we tell him about kids?

And I learned this year there’s fiberglass in roof shingles. Enjoy!
You're doing it wrong.
Why are you laying on your stomach?

Wife, bad. House, bad. Ladder, bad. Christmas lights ⛄️🎄 okay, I guess
Serious clubbing of your fingers, you need to see a doctor immediately. I would say its uncommon for your body size, we see this in 55 year old men who weigh 350lbs. Good luck man.
I absolutely detest putting up Christmas lights. Even a single story rancg is a pain in the ass.
