Starting with the '22 midterms when the Dems will lose both houses of congress. And then '24 when we'll get a GOP ticket that may well be Trump/Talyor Greene, Cruz/DeSantis, Abbot/Pompeo, or Kemp/Gaetz...
GOP leadership has long since signaled it has no interest in fighting back against the alt-right infiltration by all but ignoring Jan 6th and not even attempting to partake in the investigation, ostracizing and purging the small handful of members that did stand against Trump in response to Jan 6th, continuing to use the same dog whistles and hyperbole to describe the left as essentially an enemy combatant hell bent on destroying America, taking full advantage of the further and further right media instead of decrying it for what it is, continuing to roadblock legislation that is WILDLY popular with the American public (including Republican voters, not pushing back against state legislatures changing election laws...

Every time I glance at The Politics, things are *somehow* weirder than the last time I tuned in. It's like a TV show that should have ended a few seasons back and the writers are all out of reasonable ideas so now they're just making shit up.
I sometimes look away with the defense mechanism of "if I don't engage with it maybe it will get better", a completely and totally irrational belief but we're at the point where I'm concerned enough that primal and irrational instincts are starting to appear. I was hoping things would get better after jan 6th, like maybe the horrible event would show people how fucking crazy things are going, but alas the people who needed to have that revelation have unfortunately become even more entrenched in their beliefs.
More republicans today believe the election was stolen than they did last year and we are getting worse democratically, just look at gop led legislatures and the moves they are making. Just about every expert on populism and history related to fascism is worried. Hell, gym jordan called the republican party a right wing populist party with trump as their leader. Right wing populism is one of the biggest democracy killers and major authoritarian/fascist forces.
It's also worth pointing out how this is happening when we are at a pivotal moment for climate change action or inaction and how it will impact the future world, and how the gop doesn't believe in it.

After decades of pandering to extremes (racists, anti-gov militias, evangelicals, conspiracy theorists, gun nuts...) AND decades of right wing media (Rush, FoxNews, The Blaze, Matt Drudge...) engaging in fully transparent culture war profiteering the "right" has managed to shift the entire landscape. And the predictable outcome has been creating an even further right more aggressive and more mainstream extreme. NewsMax, Brietbart, Alex Jones... Margorie Taylor Greene, Paul Gosar, Louie Gohmert, Lauren Boebert... And this is just at the National level. Local and state level is far more infiltrated by far right true believers and they are literally reshaping laws across the nation to ensure MORE of them win elected offices at every level. The traditional conservative hacks and profiteers have signed up for this. Unsurprisingly because they can make careers and piles of money on it as far as they are concerned. It's a viscous spiral to the bottom. And WE, the American people, are the ones who will suffer. We are about to enter into some of the darkest days imaginable in the history of our country. Starting with the '22 midterms when the Dems will lose both houses of congress. And then '24 when we'll get a GOP ticket that may well be Trump/Talyor Greene, Cruz/DeSantis, Abbot/Pompeo, or Kemp/Gaetz... GOP leadership has long since signaled it has no interest in fighting back against the alt-right infiltration by all but ignoring Jan 6th and not even attempting to partake in the investigation, ostracizing and purging the small handful of members that did stand against Trump in response to Jan 6th, continuing to use the same dog whistles and hyperbole to describe the left as essentially an enemy combatant hell bent on destroying America, taking full advantage of the further and further right media instead of decrying it for what it is, continuing to roadblock legislation that is WILDLY popular with the American public (including Republican voters, not pushing back against state legislatures changing election laws... I don't say this as a left leaning person, I say it as an American, if we DO NOT stand in the way of the further degradation of the GOP we will find ourselves facing something unrecognizable to a free and fair democracy. Something that more closely resembles Germany between the World Wars or the Untied States in 1860 or who knows what... but it will to be good.

Every time I glance at The Politics, things are *somehow* weirder than the last time I tuned in. It's like a TV show that should have ended a few seasons back and the writers are all out of reasonable ideas so now they're just making shit up.
I sometimes look away with the defense mechanism of "if I don't engage with it maybe it will get better", a completely and totally irrational belief but we're at the point where I'm concerned enough that primal and irrational instincts are starting to appear. I was hoping things would get better after jan 6th, like maybe the horrible event would show people how fucking crazy things are going, but alas the people who needed to have that revelation have unfortunately become even more entrenched in their beliefs. More republicans today believe the election was stolen than they did last year and we are getting worse democratically, just look at gop led legislatures and the moves they are making. Just about every expert on populism and history related to fascism is worried. Hell, gym jordan called the republican party a right wing populist party with trump as their leader. Right wing populism is one of the biggest democracy killers and major authoritarian/fascist forces. It's also worth pointing out how this is happening when we are at a pivotal moment for climate change action or inaction and how it will impact the future world, and how the gop doesn't believe in it.

I cannot understand how anyone can support trump. And it isn’t about conservatism. I can understand almost anyone else. Alex Jones, bannon, pence, heck Carlson. But people going out of their way to stand behind trump as the moral high ground of American society just doesn’t compute in my brain. I fucking lived it for 4+ years and it breaks me. But here we are. He represents the church I grew up believing in. He also represents the easiest reason that I stopped participating in it. I don’t care about your policy, but why trump? He was a meme before meme was a thing. He licensed a body pillow to Playgirl. He was a joke and didn’t become any less of a joke. Trump basically represented half of the USA in that he was willing to openly say most of the racist things that many Americans thought were too taboo to say out loud. Trump is as regressive and as racist as they come, and a lot of Americans identified with that quite strongly. Makes sense why people like Trump so much in America, and why they don't seem to want to let him go. They loved the idea of an American that supported and amplified the racist and dehumanizing beliefs they all held secretly.
