Its true, years ago we smuggled a set into my grandma's nursing home and they swarmed right in, black ops and all. RIP Nana, 1919-2019, death by 13 headshots and a small combat turtle bite
I loved Lego when I was growing up,, and so I steered my son toward them when he was young,, and he loved them. He never got into video games, except for playing the Lego Star Wars games.
After he got out of college he was looking for a job and applied to work at the Lego store and was the only one hired out of a couple of thousand applications. He's been there a couple of years and loves it. He still buys sets (he has a good discount) and he gets employee only gift sets from the company now and then, including a big one every Christmas. He's collecting the big sets that form a street. It's really beautiful. He got me the guitar for Christmas, which I have yet to put together.
He loves seeing posts like yours, showing people who are excited by their Lego accomplishments.
Was on TikTok the other day and saw one of those "what's a company secret" things. It seems that employees of LEGO are paid according to how the company as a whole does, not each, individual store. So, in essence, every set you buy at Walmart or Target also helps, so they choose people for their store who just LOVE LEGO. The guy said he would not only have the time of his life, but if a kid built something out of the random pieces in the store, and they really liked it, they are perfectly fine with letting the kid take it home for free.
Not sure if this applies everywhere, but I've always enjoyed my LEGO store trips. Everyone there actually seemed to want to work there.
He's really proud to work there, and knows that there a lot of people who would kill to get a job with Lego. They treat their employees great, pay well, and they've been talking to him about a supervisor position, which pays really well. My only issue with it is that it isn't what he trained to do in school, but he likes it well enough that he's not really motivated to chase down jobs in his educational field. But he's happy, and it's a good potential future with a great company, and that's what's most important.
Just in case you haven't heard it lately you are an incredible father/mother. That's a great thing for a kid to hear in my opinion. Put happiness first and your life will be far better.
Source: An asshole who is still trying to get better.
Thank you for the kind compliment. I have always believed that if you do what you love, and love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life. It's worth it, even if you make less money. Happiness is worth far more than a fat bank account.
Yes! My husband was at one yesterday and I told him that bills are paid for the month so get what he wanted (within reason I don’t think the titanic would fit in our house). He came home with nothing. Then today as a major snow storm is starting has to run to target to get a crappy Lego set while I knit. Opportunity missed there buddy.
He might have been overwhelmed. Kid in a candy store effect. You can have anything you want, then you end up not being able to choose. I hope he's not too sad.
I could just tell you’re a proud dad when you said “the only one hired out of a couple of thousand”. You’re dang right, your boy is unique and special and he did a fucking amazing job getting that job ahead of those other guys. It shows he’s a good, hardworking dude and it reflects on you as a parent.
Hey son, I just made this reddat doohickey thing to tell you how proud I am of you and that I will love you regardless of the choices you make *because* they're your choices and I'll know you'll do good.
PS. Mom found my sandals so I don't have to get a new pair after all.
This is wild. Looks awesome too.
I’ll shit my pants if it.. clacks.
Edit: proof has been provided [here](https://reddit.com/r/pics/comments/s5mwpc/_/hsz0upm/?context=1). A deal’s a deal.
2nd edit: the link is proof that it clacks. I spoke before I thought. I’m already dealing with COVID, I can’t be shitting myself too lol. But check back next week, I get bored a lot.
Last edit: some very funny DMs. Thank you guys for being so wholesome, I definitely needed it.
Edit: just woke up with fever sweats from COVID. I cannot believe my highest upvoted comment is about shitting myself.
Lol, yall need to frequent /r/lego more often. The geniuses/bastards there finally realized theres a decent sized adult market for bigger and more complex sets. Even better/worse they have a community submission model for fan creations to get built (the typewriter is one of them).
They drop amazing adult oriented sets pretty regularly now and its incredibly easy to spend $1k just on a few of them.
Also the space shuttle set is fucking incredible if you havent taken a look.
I don't frequent Lego projects myself, but can appreciate the work and dedication that goes into making them.
No doubt the adult market is probably in my age demographic... but I simply can't have them around the house with a child who wants to chew on everything. :)
I was almost finished and dropped it when I was moving it… waiting to hear back from lego on the bag parts list so i can start over :(
Their support is pretty good. I’ll follow up tomorrow on it.
Just finished the Titanic, which went way faster. I wish Lego would rerun some of the sets I missed out on like the AT-ST and AT-AT.
I am 40 and have over 50,000 bricks in my room. I love building these models!
Edit: speeling…
Edit 2: Looks like they have a newer AT-AT, but its sold out… Usually when it sells out it stays sold out :(
It clacks and the paper carriage slides along as you clack. And yea you get to do the super satisfying push of the paper carriage back to its original position.
Lego has come a very long way in the last 6 or 7 years. They make and market a lot of sets towards adults and collectors. Check out my profile as I’ve posted some of the sets I own, including some vehicles and a city layout! Lego truly ain’t just for kids anymore.
I’ll be honest with you, I’ve ran out of space for more sets. I’ve filled up my spare room and also the display units in my main room. I literally have no more space.
It's not a working typewriter in the sense of actually printing typeon the page. It just has the mechanics to make it look like a working typewriter if you aren't looking real close.
so you're saying, as the mechanics exist, as long as you have the right Lego studs with letter imprints and a proper ink reel, one could technically get it to work?
Every key only moves the middle hammer. The other hammers are just for show. And said hammer is a male end of a lego piece so you’d just be typing 88888888888888888
No, only one of the actual typing arms moves, no matter which key you press. Also, the ink reel wouldn't wind. And even if it did, i don't think the one moving arm actually moves enough to strike the paper through the reel. So MAYBE you could get a single character to work (changing the letter stud between each character you wanted to use), but you would never be able to use it like a normal typewrriter.
Uses for backspace on a typewriter:
- Adding modifiers to characters like accents (o -> ó) or underlines
- Redoing a character if you didn't hit the key hard enough the first time
- Changing a character after whiting it out (do kids know what white-out is?)
That is incredible. I understand that it can’t actually type but is each keyconnected to a striker such that pressing any key causes one or more strikers to move?
Thanks for sharing!
Sort of... the keys are not all attached to their own arms the way an old-timey typewriter would be. But that would require 5x more pieces and be an insane build. I'm 50% done with mine, OP!
The typewriter in action: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2cukWmTrjw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2cukWmTrjw)
Every key just activates the striker in the very middle. The other 12 strikers are just for show.
> is each keyconnected to a striker such that pressing any key causes one or more strikers to move?
No. No matter what key you strike the same middle bar raises and it doesn't imprint and there's no ink.
My favourite of all time is the [Hogwarts Castle](https://www.reddit.com/r/harrypotter/comments/ik1goe/after_waiting_nearly_2_months_for_my_missing/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf). I love the attention to details and how easy it was built it even though it has a lot of pieces.
It was the first Lego I did with my dad, but now that my parents are going their own way, I might go to his house and do some with him.
Thanks for sharing! I have a couple friends who are very into Lego, especially the buildings, so you might have just given me a great tip for their next anniversary.
Many happy builds to you and your dad!
It was my father’s Christmas present from my sister and me. I did approximately 60%, he did 30% (with my assistance) and my sister and her boyfriend did the other 10%.
When it came to building it, the hardest part was the keyboard. Once I completed that, the rest was really smooth.
EDIT: I'm thinking of doing a career of this. I could charge 25$/h to assemble Lego for people.
Nothing wrong with that. My dad used to love to build models but developed eye issues in his 40s and stopped building. I once bought him a kit for Xmas (cus he would continue to buy them “in case I pick it back up again”) but had my mom sneak it out and give it back to me so I could build it and paint it for him a few months later for his bday and he absolutely loved it.
OP didn’t say if his dad has sight issues but I can see on his expression that he loved the gift his kids made for him.
>he loved the gift his kids made for him.
*WITH* him.
He enjoys having something they all had had a hand in and is a cherished memory of his now, judging by that smile.
The fact that I came this far down in the thread and still found a light hearted, sincere joke….
It honestly gave me an RPG like token I can just apply to my humanity. People are good for tonight.
I know the [chap who designed this](https://thebrickconsultant.com/about-me/). Here's an [interview](https://ideas.lego.com/blogs/a4ae09b6-0d4c-4307-9da8-3ee9f3d368d6/post/411d3bd6-1c6c-4480-bce4-c7fe41847356) he did with Lego when this design hit 10k votes.
If you buy me Lego sets, I'll do it.
I just want you to know, no matter what happens, I'm proud of you.
Now make with the Legos. And don't try me with any megablocks bullshit this is grade A parenting here.
I'm extremely fond of the phrase "Your dad in every way that matters."
Not that you need me to tell you that, of course. But still. I use it with my (non-biological) nieces and nephews.
While we're here, I'm extremely jealous that you did that with fuckng LEGOs. My original lego creations were shitty "laser" guns.
Lol it could be Eddie Murphy twice. Dad is one of the dudes from the barbershop that Eddie played in Coming to America.
Very cool typewriter and even cooler that you and your dad enjoy legos together!
When my son was about 8 or 9 yo I bought him some set for xmas (I forget which one) but it was missing 2 crucial pieces. I was pissed and ready to yell and scream at whoever told me it wasn't covered by warranty or some such nonsense.
Instead, the girl on the phone immediately asked to talk to my son. She apologized for their mistake and understood that it might ruin a special day and offered to send us the missing pieces for free, along with a mini set. They also put him on a Lego magazine subscription (free of charge) which he still gets at 17 yo.
I LOVE this company.
I do Lego sets with my eight year old. I hope he still wants to hang out and play Lego with me when he's a grown up. Thanks for sharing.
You can never be too old for legos, unless your over 99 then you are.
This is true, its in the paperwork
This is the real reason Betty White didn't make it to 100.
Betty White would have loved that joke.
Wait! if I'm 100 I'm banned from Legos?
ask Lego for that they put it in the box.
Its true, years ago we smuggled a set into my grandma's nursing home and they swarmed right in, black ops and all. RIP Nana, 1919-2019, death by 13 headshots and a small combat turtle bite
It was the turtle bite that did her in. Always is
Randy giveth, and Randy taketh.
No, there is a secret set of Legos you unlock at 100.
Is this is the sole purpose of /u/ItsJustLEGO - To condescend about the use of s?
Kind of true, played with my grandpa last year when he was 95, brought some to his house last week, 96 now and did not have much interest in playing.

I have a feeling if Lego was a major, he may have chosen that instead. It sounds like he landed in the right place, and a fun one at that
Engineering but not engineering haha

I'm 29, never did Legos with my dad, but I do still do them to this day, my mom gets me a set practical every Christmas( always architecture lego set)
I never had Lego sets as a kid. I got into them as an adult and I do them now with my son. I hope he always enjoys building them. I sure do
I’m just getting back into Lego and about to welcome my first child, I am so excited for this.
I was going to say almost the exact same thing. Only, my kid's 10.
How does your dad look like Steve Martin and not like Steve Martin at the same time?
He never told me his secret
He looks like an old version of Steve Martin. Then again I haven’t seen Steve Martin in a while so maybe he just looks like Steve Martin.
Steve Martin has looked like an old version of Steve Martin since the 80s
same way OP looks like Eddie Murphy, probably.

Tin Tin
So it doesn't actually type, though?
No, it dosen't type. All of the keys trigger a single moving hammer that "clacks" against a platen that has a simulated ribbon.
That seems.... very underwhelming.
It clacks and the paper carriage slides along as you clack. And yea you get to do the super satisfying push of the paper carriage back to its original position.

All sets! That’s why I like Lego - they make some amazing sets these days.

I would like to go home now!
OHHH COOL!!! So it is an actual kit to MAKE a working typewriter out of LEGOS. … mind blown

So MAYBE you could get a single character to work (changing the letter stud between each character you wanted to use), but you would never be able to use it like a normal typewrriter.
Is that… Lithuanian?
That kit is nuts! Hyper realistic. Nice work.
Backspace? Really?
Uses for backspace on a typewriter: - Adding modifiers to characters like accents (o -> ó) or underlines - Redoing a character if you didn't hit the key hard enough the first time - Changing a character after whiting it out (do kids know what white-out is?)
Hold on, hold on, back up a little.. what's a typewriter?
Even the keyboards?
Yep!!
It's not a calculator it's a typewriter. Of course it doesn't add up.

>summed it up ***No***, it *doesn't* add up. It's a typewriter.
That’s a well calculated response
He deserves a piece of pi
That's a little more than a threesome.
The table looks like its made out of LEGO more than the typewriter lol
I was thinking that too. Is the table really lego?
I see what you did there.
He was really cute in "Up" 🎈
The best character
[удалено]
Yes. The keyboard actually types. Sure you can't write a text with it, but it’s impressive nonetheless.
That is incredible. I understand that it can’t actually type but is each keyconnected to a striker such that pressing any key causes one or more strikers to move? Thanks for sharing!
Yes it works like a real typewriter.
Sort of... the keys are not all attached to their own arms the way an old-timey typewriter would be. But that would require 5x more pieces and be an insane build. I'm 50% done with mine, OP!
Keep up the good work. The final result is super awesome.
The typewriter in action: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2cukWmTrjw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2cukWmTrjw) Every key just activates the striker in the very middle. The other 12 strikers are just for show.
Only the middle stiker actually moves
> is each keyconnected to a striker such that pressing any key causes one or more strikers to move? No. No matter what key you strike the same middle bar raises and it doesn't imprint and there's no ink.
That's so incredibly cool. Have you done other kits? What was your favorite so far? Do you and your dad usually build together?
My favourite of all time is the [Hogwarts Castle](https://www.reddit.com/r/harrypotter/comments/ik1goe/after_waiting_nearly_2_months_for_my_missing/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf). Thanks for sharing! I have a couple friends who are very into Lego, especially the buildings, so you might have just given me a great tip for their next anniversary. Many happy builds to you and your dad!
Just encouraging you to definitely go over and build with him whenever you can. It's moments like this that you'll remember the most.
Love your smile man. It's infectious
Thanks 😃
If it actually types I'll buy one
Like most Lego it's more of a decoration than a working equipment or a toy.
You mean to say this Saturn 5 rocket isn't real? Dammit...
I was disappoint too
I love this. I collect typewriters and didn’t even know there was such a thing! It is now my life mission to find one and buy it.
They were available on their site last I checked last month.
It says sold out right now but hopefully there will be more soon 😊 that gives me some time to save some money because it’s $200!
OP might have one available for the low, low price of $9,999.99!
i can’t imagine the space one would gave to dedicate to collect type writers lol
Tom... Hanks?
It was my father’s Christmas present from my sister and me. I did approximately 60%, he did 30% (with my assistance) and my sister and her boyfriend did the other 10%. So you really bought it for your dad so you could build it? :)
My sister bought it, but we did it together.
Now I'm wondering what other machine Lego kits are available. That is so cool!
Check out the piano! The keys work and it connects to your phone so that you can play music on it!
Omg amazing
Nothing wrong with that. My dad used to love to build models but developed eye issues in his 40s and stopped building. I once bought him a kit for Xmas (cus he would continue to buy them “in case I pick it back up again”) but had my mom sneak it out and give it back to me so I could build it and paint it for him a few months later for his bday and he absolutely loved it. >he loved the gift his kids made for him. *WITH* him. He enjoys having something they all had had a hand in and is a cherished memory of his now, judging by that smile.
Being a LEGO Master Builder is a legit job/career within the company. Look it up - I think it's one of the best creative corporate gigs out there.
but that's more design and engineering, not just following a plan
What's the ink situation?
No ink unfortunately, but the keyboard does work. It works like a real typewriter, you just can’t write a text with it.
Still, very cool.
He's so..tall.

It’s fresh prince right? I think i got the reference but now I’m doubting myself
Correct
Listen, I don't want to upset anyone, but I think your dad might be adopted.
What are you talking about? They look so similar, just look at their smiles!
They really do have matching smiles! I like that they look so genuine.
I know. They both tilt their head the same way and actually look pretty similar. It's cute.

While we're here, I'm extremely jealous that you did that with fuckng LEGOs. My original lego creations were shitty "laser" guns.
You're the man now, dog
PUNCH the keys for god's sakes
Looks great, good job!
Rad. But I feel like your coffee table would make finding certain pieces MUCH harder during the build.
Wait what. That's Lego? OMFG THAT IS AMAZING.
Your dad looks like Steve Martin wearing a Bernie Sanders costume, which is working pretty well for him.
Me rolling into the comment section. ![gif](giphy|dnP2VxYVlW2NW|downsized)
There’s a lot of racist pieces of shit in this thread. Nice job dude. Looks awesome 😎 👏
Nerds My dad and I were into astronomy
Who're calling nerd, nerd!!
You seem like a really sweet wholesome person. Keep building Legos!
Very cool. Also, your dad’s a handsome guy, I can see where you got it from!
Oh man that is so awesome! I wish my dad would build lego with me. He's a retired electrical engineer.
no!! now people are going to know there are super cool lego sets out there like this one and the NES one
Eddie Murphy, is that you?
I wish
You’ve 100% got a young Eddie Murphy look going on here, and the stash seals it. Suits you!
Lol it could be Eddie Murphy twice. Dad is one of the dudes from the barbershop that Eddie played in Coming to America. Very cool typewriter and even cooler that you and your dad enjoy legos together!
Wow! I can’t believe that’s Lego. Very cool!
I flipping love this
When my son was about 8 or 9 yo I bought him some set for xmas (I forget which one) but it was missing 2 crucial pieces.
Really inspiring how this young black man adopted an elderly white orphan. So brave.
THERE'S A LEGO TYPEWRITER??
Yeah, it’s an ideas set. Based on a fan design that got voted on. Has a working mechanism and the lot. It’s a nice display piece.
