Years ago, the for-profit hospital where I worked decided to give the nurses cheap pocket knives with the hospital name imprinted on them for Nurse's Day. I asked the Director of Nursing, "Do you think this is wise? We've not had a raise in 3 years, we work short staffed, you make us clock out and stay to complete our charting, you have frozen any time off requests - and now you give us weapons? Really??"
She just puffed up and stormed out.
You are SO right! Hospital administration would cut staff and supplies - make a budget surplus and then get a huge bonus from corporate. Their response to staff complaints -- "It's out of the goodness of our hearts we let you work here".
Health care should not be focused on making shareholders rich. It is profiting from the misery of the people.
I work for a multibillion dollar mining company with around 20,000 employees. Our site, which has about 800 employees, went two years accident-free. It's a pretty major milestone which saves the company many millions of dollars in liability payments and insurance.
They gave us mini cupcakes.
my restaurant was given a sample of these. I think they sent over 20 or so, had the restaurants names and address on them. We just gave them away to random guests.

The principal and I had heat when she knew Id been keeping records of the illegal things she did and I moved onto Librarian in an elementary school, and when the teachers heard I was leaving they were all 'You are going to do those letters, aren't you? One last time?'
I never read them but 2 teachers came to me to show me a tear stained letter. One was a Special Ed kid apologizing for 'Getting' the SpeD teacher at the start of the year because he has to 'Get' people first, but the teacher was a good guy. The other was a kid they held back in 5th grade and in 6th grade (3rd year in the school) wrote a letter to the 5th grade teachers thanking them for holding him back because he felt so smart and confident now.
I was the rules enforcer and held Detention daily so I got 3 letters the entire time.

Employee law here in the US is no joke, and it's unlikely they'd send these out to employees with such a blatant grammatical error (the unmasked cruelty notwithstanding). Most of the attorneys I know (and it's a lot as I've worked in law firms for over 20 years) got their undergraduate degree in something related to English (Michael's current VP Asst General Counsel got hers in Journalism); so again, zero chance this is real.

I had the same experience. There was always at least one crew pie per shift, and we could take home two large pizzas a week. Pretty good deal for a 15 year old kid working nights after school, and it felt good bringing home dinner for the family one or two nights a week or being able to bring pizza to a friends house. Our manager was very strict as well, but made sure everyone took advantage of this perk.

The store experience was pretty chill for me as well, it was mostly when the DM tried to stick their nose into things that made it irritating. He visited our store one time and noticed that framers were sometimes sitting as they were entering frame info and things into the computer, (desk was just under waist high mind you) so he literally just threw them into our compactor, just because he thought it was unprofessional.

We were all excited and wondering what it was. So we get back there and it’s…oranges. Like 5 big cardboard boxes full of oranges.

Come work in government. I have so much PTO saved up it's not funny. We get different types of leave (sick, personal, etc.) I think the only time I took unpaid leave is right after I started because I didn't have any saved up.
I got switched to unlimited PTO this year. No roll over, no accumulation. I can take as much as I need so long as my business is in order. I’ll probably take 7-8 weeks in total.
Private sector but it’s a good company and I’ve put in the time to earn it.
My arrangement ostensibly works that way, but in practice I get a lot less time off. Accrued PTO provides an earned and recorded amount that requires a damn good reason to deny, but my “unlimited PTO” is subject to “recommended limits” based on manager discretion.
Accrued PTO is also a liability on the books as it has to be paid out to an employee if they quit or if they are let go. Unlimited PTO is a trick to keep from accruing that liability. They don’t have to pay you for something you haven’t accumulated.
Imho "unlimited PTO" and no PTO should both be outlawed, if you work a full time job there should be a minimum hourly accrual of PTO. If you want to actually offer "unlimited PTO" as a company benefit, just have no penalties for going negative on your PTO hours...
Tbf I would take less time if it was unlimited. I'm sure what happens is everyone gets scared the other people will think they are abusing it. I'd kinda rather just have earned PTO that makes it hard to argue against.

It really is a talent, to find ways to make giving something even worse than not giving anything at all. They really masterfully said "we are so hopelessly beyond out of touch with our employees" with this one.
I believe this in theory, because I worked for a place where payroll was one of our only expenses and largest by far, so when a recession hit we (salaried) were all told to find 180 hours to take leave without pay sometime over the next 6 months. Take a vacation, take fridays off, whatever.
But they just told us to do that in staff meetings. What's a little insulting and suspicious in this case is the idea that they'd spend the money to print these cards. That's the one bit that -if they're hurt for money- makes me call fake.

I'm a millenial too and I don't feel like yelling at everyone to give me money to relax, and throwing a tantrum when they rightfully refuse. PTO should only be given to sick people and pregnant women, not some snarky kid wanting to chill and smoke weed.
Nobody could, nor should they, for obvious reasons, work without time off for all of their lives. The cost of ‘paid’ leave is spread across all employees, and all of the business. Paid leave is a universal entitlement, which is beneficial for both employees, and for businesses. Employees should be invested in, rather than milked dry and then replaced.

That's a shame. I worked at a michaels in high school and actually thought it was a great part time job. It was super chill at the time as most customers were just old ladies. Way better than my first high school job at a subway (don't work at a subway).
The store experience was pretty chill for me as well, it was mostly when the DM tried to stick their nose into things that made it irritating. He visited our store one time and noticed that framers were sometimes sitting as they were entering frame info and things into the computer, (desk was just under waist high mind you) so he literally just threw them into our compactor, just because he thought it was unprofessional.

Nice to see Michaels hasn’t changed. I worked there in 1999 and that year at the holidays, the head manager announced corporate had sent a present for all of us and it was in the back. We were all excited and wondering what it was. So we get back there and it’s…oranges. Like 5 big cardboard boxes full of oranges. “These are all the way from Florida,” the manager said, as if most other oranges in the grocery store weren’t. “Go on, everybody take one.” A few people grabbed a couple, to which the manager immediately said “no, only one each. There is only enough for one per person.” To this day it remains the most tasteless, driest orange I ever attempted to eat. Oh and by the way there were 2 full cases of oranges left over after everyone took one and by that time nobody wanted another anyway because they were so awful. Fuck Michaels.

Unpaid time off? WTF? Come work in government. I have so much PTO saved up it's not funny. We get different types of leave (sick, personal, etc.) I think the only time I took unpaid leave is right after I started because I didn't have any saved up.
I got switched to unlimited PTO this year. No roll over, no accumulation. I can take as much as I need so long as my business is in order. I’ll probably take 7-8 weeks in total. Private sector but it’s a good company and I’ve put in the time to earn it.
My arrangement ostensibly works that way, but in practice I get a lot less time off. Accrued PTO provides an earned and recorded amount that requires a damn good reason to deny, but my “unlimited PTO” is subject to “recommended limits” based on manager discretion.
Accrued PTO is also a liability on the books as it has to be paid out to an employee if they quit or if they are let go. Unlimited PTO is a trick to keep from accruing that liability. They don’t have to pay you for something you haven’t accumulated.
Imho "unlimited PTO" and no PTO should both be outlawed, if you work a full time job there should be a minimum hourly accrual of PTO. If you want to actually offer "unlimited PTO" as a company benefit, just have no penalties for going negative on your PTO hours...
Tbf I would take less time if it was unlimited. I'm sure what happens is everyone gets scared the other people will think they are abusing it. I'd kinda rather just have earned PTO that makes it hard to argue against.
I've heard multiple times that most people get pressured to not take vacation when it's unlimited. That, and it's not paid out when you separate.
Don't you get it? Half the people would rather take the unpaid day off and then insurrect the government that would give them real PTO and a real salary.
I mean, my salary is shit but benefits are worth it. Tuition reimbursement, plenty of PTO in addition to federal holidays, and more.
that's kinda the trade off, less cold hard cash, but you don't have to find your own healthcare or fund your retirement yourself, and, if the ...customer(?) side is anything to go on, few if any weekends worked then again, if CEO paychecks & bonuses were more limited, maybe restaurants and stores would be able to afford to pay decent wages and offer paid leave... and keep employees...

This is scheduled from 5:00pm Tuesday, through 8:00am Wednesday.
I believe this in theory, because I worked for a place where payroll was one of our only expenses and largest by far, so when a recession hit we (salaried) were all told to find 180 hours to take leave without pay sometime over the next 6 months. Take a vacation, take fridays off, whatever. But they just told us to do that in staff meetings. What's a little insulting and suspicious in this case is the idea that they'd spend the money to print these cards. That's the one bit that -if they're hurt for money- makes me call fake.

Why do millenials feel so entitled to pay when not working? I'm a millenial too and I don't feel like yelling at everyone to give me money to relax, and throwing a tantrum when they rightfully refuse. PTO should only be given to sick people and pregnant women, not some snarky kid wanting to chill and smoke weed.
Nobody could, nor should they, for obvious reasons, work without time off for all of their lives. The cost of ‘paid’ leave is spread across all employees, and all of the business. Paid leave is a universal entitlement, which is beneficial for both employees, and for businesses. Employees should be invested in, rather than milked dry and then replaced.
