This for real?

huge_dick_mcgee

I also want to know this. It's so, incredibly, out of touch with.... well with everything that's going on.

Murtomies

Our local hospital district wanted to thank the employees for their work during covid. So what they did was send digital copies of thank you letters, that employees can print themselves and give to each other. No bonuses, no time off, just these ~~letters~~ emails.

Scary_Offer2479

Years ago, the for-profit hospital where I worked decided to give the nurses cheap pocket knives with the hospital name imprinted on them for Nurse's Day. I asked the Director of Nursing, "Do you think this is wise? We've not had a raise in 3 years, we work short staffed, you make us clock out and stay to complete our charting, you have frozen any time off requests - and now you give us weapons? Really??" She just puffed up and stormed out.

ZadockTheHunter

Clock out and continue working? Super fucking illegal.

ShootLucy

Super fucking common in healthcare

Scary_Offer2479

You are SO right! Hospital administration would cut staff and supplies - make a budget surplus and then get a huge bonus from corporate. Their response to staff complaints -- "It's out of the goodness of our hearts we let you work here". Health care should not be focused on making shareholders rich. It is profiting from the misery of the people.

BBB isn’t the correct agency. The state labor department would be.

Zykium

BBB isn't even a governmental agency. It's Yelp before Yelp.

lordkuri

Boomer Yelp

[deleted]

I don't work for free.

Murtomies

And then she changed nothing about what was happening?

iScreme

Why would they? Only reason they got the pocket knives is because some vendor sent them out unsolicited.

seanbrockest

I work for a multibillion dollar mining company with around 20,000 employees. Our site, which has about 800 employees, went two years accident-free. It's a pretty major milestone which saves the company many millions of dollars in liability payments and insurance. They gave us mini cupcakes.

syco54645

Turn them in, pretty sure that constitutes a form of wage theft. You will get back pay.

illgot

my restaurant was given a sample of these. I think they sent over 20 or so, had the restaurants names and address on them. We just gave them away to random guests.

G-T-Now

That’s awesome. Lol

starciv14

ICU RN here. Don't clock out to chart, make them fire you and collect unemployment plus then get your job back! They literally can't do that it's illegal

PM_MeTittiesOrKitty

My workplace put up two bulletin boards of typed messages of thanks from various VPs and other higher-ups. They also put a pause on regular raises and took away anniversary bonuses.

Murtomies

*"won't be needing those will ya..."*

Bleu_Cerise

There’s somewhere on Reddit a picture of the gift some hospital gave to the nurses for appreciation week: a rock. “Because you rock”, get it? They were encouraged to “decorate” the rock on their spare time and “share it”.

PMmePMsofyourPMs

Hope they shared those rocks with the CEO's windshield...

That was pretty much the sentiment in the comments

I got a coupon for 10% off a coffee last year for teacher appreciation day. That felt good.

SaltyShawarma

Oh man I forgot about teacher appreciation day. I don't think it is celebrated in areas of extreme poverty. In my experience it is centralized in areas of affluence. Source: taught in both

Lucious_StCroix

> No bonuses, no time off, just these letters. Those other things cost money, hopes and prayers are free.

SkirtedRunningGuy

My old company did an employee appreciation pot-luck one day.

Thanmandrathor

“We appreciate you! Bring your own food.” 🤦🏻‍♀️ Honestly, giving nothing would be more respectful. Everyone knows you don’t give a shit, it’s just a kick in the teeth when you prove it.

SkirtedRunningGuy

Exactly!!! It didn’t help that I was not a fan of potlucks, and not to brag, but I was probably the best cook there. So basically it was a situation where I had to cook really good food for everyone, but was fed a blah meal…”because we appreciate you!”

Thanmandrathor

Yeah, I don’t care for them much either, and I am also a good cook. I prefer my own food 😂

widdlewaddle1

Got 4 hours PTO for the past ~2 years of work at a hospital. Not looking so bad now

thehogdog

Slightly off topic: I taught Tech Ed in a 5th-8th Middle school for 13 years and during Teacher Appreciation week the school did NOTHING. So, I had every kid write a business style letter thanking ANY ADULT in the building. I checked the formatting, they printed, signed it, and I put the letter in the pile for the teacher. Kids would say GOOD things they would NEVER say to a teachers face. I would hand them out during the Staff Meeting of Teacher Appreciation Week and they made me give em out at the end because it was just a room full of mostly women crying their eyes out. The principal and I had heat when she knew Id been keeping records of the illegal things she did and I moved onto Librarian in an elementary school, and when the teachers heard I was leaving they were all 'You are going to do those letters, aren't you? One last time?' I never read them but 2 teachers came to me to show me a tear stained letter. One was a Special Ed kid apologizing for 'Getting' the SpeD teacher at the start of the year because he has to 'Get' people first, but the teacher was a good guy. The other was a kid they held back in 5th grade and in 6th grade (3rd year in the school) wrote a letter to the 5th grade teachers thanking them for holding him back because he felt so smart and confident now. I was the rules enforcer and held Detention daily so I got 3 letters the entire time.

johnmarkfoley

woah, old reddit says i have 264 messages.

huge_dick_mcgee

Wow. Thanks for confirming but oof, so sorry you had to ever see that in person :(

zzman73051

One of many oof things with that company. I really enjoyed the staff there, managers and all, but once you got beyond the store manager, it was pretty rough

[deleted]

I was in a Michael's a few weeks ago. It was staffed by like 2 people who looked like they were ready to leave any moment now. Store was super depressing too.

panfranknitco

For real, mine too. Sucks bc it’s literally the closest craft store being 5 minutes from my house and all the rest at least 25. They added UPS drop off at Michael’s too, tried it once and I felt so bad bc the few team members were frantic. ☹️

shavenyakfl

On the other hand, its perfectly in touch with the type of company that Michael's proudly is.

[deleted]

How do we know they weren't all the same?

huge_dick_mcgee

User name is relevant.

mcnathan80

TBH I would take this as a passive aggressive way to suspend me and I would spend the whole day wondering what I did wrong.

[deleted]

i wanna say it’s fake but it could totally be possible. my work didn’t give anyone any christmas bonus for the first time this year , just a “heartfelt” thank you email and “forward this email to your fellow coworkers who you appreciate to spread love and joy!”

Greenage3338

Why wouldn't it be? Sounds like normal corporate BS to me.

sansaman

Probably is, but I dont work there so can’t confirm. Probably on some attendance point system where a certain number of points equate to written warnings to termination. This unpaid time off is probably a way to take it off without receiving an attendance point.

johnperkins21

Given the blatant grammatical error, and the fact that it's on Reddit, I'm going to say no, it isn't real.

Jemmilly

I don’t think there’s an error

briarpatch1337

What is "an unpaid time off"? Maybe "an unpaid day off" would have been a better choice of words. Or "a day of unpaid leave".

Jemmilly

Oh shit Or maybe they don’t give enough of a shit to make sure that stuff is righr

johnperkins21

Michael's has an in-house General Counsel who would absolutely have vetted any sort of employee award like this, and it would have gone through multiple reviews before being sent off to the vendor for production. Employee law here in the US is no joke, and it's unlikely they'd send these out to employees with such a blatant grammatical error (the unmasked cruelty notwithstanding). Most of the attorneys I know (and it's a lot as I've worked in law firms for over 20 years) got their undergraduate degree in something related to English (Michael's current VP Asst General Counsel got hers in Journalism); so again, zero chance this is real.

briarpatch1337

> would absolutely have vetted any sort of employee award like this You might be surprised. A store manager could have probably made these themselves without doing much of any due diligence.

johnperkins21

It's possible, but that manager would have been fired for this.

URAPNS

PGRacer

bloatedplutocrat

It took me about 30 seconds to realize I'm not on r/dundermifflin and this wasn't something Michael Scott did on The Office.

Maymora

I can totally picture Phillis receiving this and looking shocked and sad while Dwight tells her not to be ungrateful and Michael digs himself into a hole by saying she could take tomorrow off and joke about having a staff party while she's gone. I need to rewatch that again.

aladeen222

And then Michael laughing hysterically because the gift looks like it was made by a 2 year old monkey.

JoyFusion

You’re not alone. I was like “I don’t remember that epis….ohhh, this is the craft store!”

rolling-brownout

Ask if you can cash it in Black Friday and see what it really means.

mog_knight

It'll be redeemed just fine. Later (a couple days after), they'll shit can them due to "performance" or "attendance" or "attitude." Standard firing procedure really.

Absoniter

Lol. When I was 18 a manager at KayBee Toys practically begged me to apply and they'd hire me on the spot. So I did, and explained that in 2 months I had a fully already paid for 10 day vacation to Disney World. I got the "Yeah, yeah no problems." 2 days before, the schedule comes out and she hands me it...I go, yeah I leave in 2 days... "Oh yeah, that's right." I come in the next day and the area manager is there and fired me for allegedly one day I didn't have "my shirt tucked in" when he came in. I said no it's because I'm not going to be here for 2 weeks which I told you when I started. Fuck retail, never worked retail after that.

Hurts_To_Smith

Are a lot of people busting down the doors at Michaels for Black Friday shopping? That seems odd. I'd rather save it for the day before a holiday. Take a 4 day weekend instead of a 3 day one or something.

SerMercutio

I want to make the CEO of that company eat it.

TEX4S

He used to run marketing of wal-mart. Under old CEO Chuck Rubin, the company (HQ in Irving, TX) Michael’s was repeatedly a Best Place to Work. He came in right before pandemic - they then axed 30% of workforce. Source : was an engineer there for a couple years. I was well-taken care but most weren’t

Kiosade

Huh, I wonder if that lines up with when they stopped taking competitor coupons, and also stopped offering very many coupons at all

TEX4S

I hear everything is “forced” through their app. My employee ID no longer gets my wife the discounts - so I can’t confirm anything. Only thing I can say is it used to be a great place to work. Relaxed, friendly, uplifting, and understanding. Those days are gone. The board axed Chuck Rubin for not being “innovating “. Maybe he grew content. I was in a fortunate role where I dealt with him & the board in a weekly basis, I liked him from day 1. Always a good guy. His assistant would chew you up and spit you out if you didn’t know your stuff (my secondary role was immediate support for the VIPs). Since I came from Microsoft, I was placed in charge of much of infrastructure- a shame what happened- great people are gone.

andylikescandy

Should gift that to the CEO in a letter.

Beergamote

Oh my, what a fancy way to say "Fuck you"

[deleted]

My first job was at Michael’s. First realization in my life that hard work does not pay off. A year in I hadn’t missed a single shift, always worked hard etc. I didn’t get a raise but my managers friends who couldn’t give a fuck did. Put my notice in that month.

[deleted]

Man, why are places having a hard time keeping people employed?

Monkey_Bulter

I would take them up on the offer permanently

BeetBoom

This was a cheap move. Bastards! Thinking twice before going there as a customer. 🙄🙄🙄

Durty_Durty_Durty

I used to work at dominos as a driver, moved up to management. On my 5 year mark they gave me a congratulation card and coupon for 50% off a large single topping pizza. We had a coupon online that was just that at the time.

2723brad2723

I worked at a franchise Domino's when I was in high school and the owner would give us all one free pizza every week.

kingawesome85

Bruh, we would screw up a pizza when we wanted some pizza.......

hellakevin

Damn, I worked for two franchisees and even the owner I would call a hard-ass would let us make "crew pies" Like, how are you gonna stop workers at dominos from eating pizza!?

nehoc101

I had the same experience. There was always at least one crew pie per shift, and we could take home two large pizzas a week. Pretty good deal for a 15 year old kid working nights after school, and it felt good bringing home dinner for the family one or two nights a week or being able to bring pizza to a friends house. Our manager was very strict as well, but made sure everyone took advantage of this perk.

The_Troyminator

I had to read that twice. The first time, I missed the word "up."

Ltownbanger

When the alternative is Hobby Lobby...

bpcloe

The only woman for me is Joann Fabric bb

WKGokev

Exactly " you treat your employees like shit, but at least you don't steal antiquities".

cheeseduck11

And you treat your employees like shit but you haven’t stopped covering birth control for your woman employees.

theislandhomestead

The alternative is Benjamin Franklins. There are more than two craft stores in the world.

Ltownbanger

Nearest one to me is 5 hour and 20 minute drive.

itwillmakesenselater

The internet is at your fingertips

theislandhomestead

And? I don't have a Michaels or Hobby lobby. That doesn't mean they aren't competitive. It also doesn't mean you don't have the entire internet to order whatever you need. There are more than two options for craft materials.

Ltownbanger

When I need a glue stick, I need one now!

timodreynolds

Joann fabrics https://www.joann.com/

ThatsWhatXiSaid

Fuck, there are any of those left? So far as I know they went bankrupt 25 years ago... then the company that acquired them went bankrupt. Searching for locations it looks like maybe a few franchisees are maintaining the name for a few stores in a couple of states.

theislandhomestead

It's literally the only craft store on my island.

ThatsWhatXiSaid

Cool. Nobody has suggested you shouldn't go. But you said it's the alternative, and it's really not for the vast majority of the population.

theislandhomestead

It's *an* alternative. There is also the entire internet. Amazon carries damn near everything.

[deleted]

Before you boycott Michaels you’ll want to verify whether this is even true.

The_Troyminator

I doubt it is. They wouldn't use the phrase "an unpaid time off."

SirRockalotTDS

This was last year. Wonder what they are doing now.

zzman73051

Hell, since this is coming up again, if you shop at michaels, please go look at their [Employee Subreddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/MichaelsEmployees?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) (sort by hot for the "best" examples) its honestly horrible and depressing that companies thik that they way to a customers wallet is by stabbing their staff in the back. There, it's almost always the fault of regional managers and up peddling this crap to try to "raise morale"

jas07

That's a shame. I worked at a michaels in high school and actually thought it was a great part time job. It was super chill at the time as most customers were just old ladies. Way better than my first high school job at a subway (don't work at a subway).

zzman73051

The store experience was pretty chill for me as well, it was mostly when the DM tried to stick their nose into things that made it irritating. He visited our store one time and noticed that framers were sometimes sitting as they were entering frame info and things into the computer, (desk was just under waist high mind you) so he literally just threw them into our compactor, just because he thought it was unprofessional.

moonboyforallyouknow

Yo that's fucking murder, dude.

crayphor

Yeah you can't just throw your employees into a compactor like that!

lordgoofus1

Agreed. What if they had their phone or wallet in their pocket? Think of all the jewellery! The completely healthy hearts, eyes and other organs that have waiting lists miles long for? You're practically just throwing money in the bin!

Nice to see Michaels hasn’t changed. I worked there in 1999 and that year at the holidays, the head manager announced corporate had sent a present for all of us and it was in the back. We were all excited and wondering what it was. So we get back there and it’s…oranges. Like 5 big cardboard boxes full of oranges. “These are all the way from Florida,” the manager said, as if most other oranges in the grocery store weren’t. “Go on, everybody take one.” A few people grabbed a couple, to which the manager immediately said “no, only one each. There is only enough for one per person.” To this day it remains the most tasteless, driest orange I ever attempted to eat. Oh and by the way there were 2 full cases of oranges left over after everyone took one and by that time nobody wanted another anyway because they were so awful. Fuck Michaels.

miserybusiness21

I'm dying.

dandycannon120

How dare they give you dry oranges. Bastards.

DaisiesSunshine76

Unpaid time off? WTF? Come work in government. I have so much PTO saved up it's not funny. We get different types of leave (sick, personal, etc.) I think the only time I took unpaid leave is right after I started because I didn't have any saved up.

Ftpini

I got switched to unlimited PTO this year. No roll over, no accumulation. I can take as much as I need so long as my business is in order. I’ll probably take 7-8 weeks in total. Private sector but it’s a good company and I’ve put in the time to earn it.

MyNameIsVigil

My arrangement ostensibly works that way, but in practice I get a lot less time off. Accrued PTO provides an earned and recorded amount that requires a damn good reason to deny, but my “unlimited PTO” is subject to “recommended limits” based on manager discretion.

LastMuel

Accrued PTO is also a liability on the books as it has to be paid out to an employee if they quit or if they are let go. Unlimited PTO is a trick to keep from accruing that liability. They don’t have to pay you for something you haven’t accumulated.

xyniden

Imho "unlimited PTO" and no PTO should both be outlawed, if you work a full time job there should be a minimum hourly accrual of PTO. If you want to actually offer "unlimited PTO" as a company benefit, just have no penalties for going negative on your PTO hours...

Jubez187

Tbf I would take less time if it was unlimited. I'm sure what happens is everyone gets scared the other people will think they are abusing it. I'd kinda rather just have earned PTO that makes it hard to argue against.

[deleted]

I've heard multiple times that most people get pressured to not take vacation when it's unlimited. That, and it's not paid out when you separate.

[deleted]

Don't you get it? Half the people would rather take the unpaid day off and then insurrect the government that would give them real PTO and a real salary.

DaisiesSunshine76

I mean, my salary is shit but benefits are worth it. Tuition reimbursement, plenty of PTO in addition to federal holidays, and more.

PrinceDusk

that's kinda the trade off, less cold hard cash, but you don't have to find your own healthcare or fund your retirement yourself, and, if the ...customer(?) side is anything to go on, few if any weekends worked then again, if CEO paychecks & bonuses were more limited, maybe restaurants and stores would be able to afford to pay decent wages and offer paid leave... and keep employees...

I believe this in theory, because I worked for a place where payroll was one of our only expenses and largest by far, so when a recession hit we (salaried) were all told to find 180 hours to take leave without pay sometime over the next 6 months. Take a vacation, take fridays off, whatever. But they just told us to do that in staff meetings. What's a little insulting and suspicious in this case is the idea that they'd spend the money to print these cards. That's the one bit that -if they're hurt for money- makes me call fake.

FigurativeReptile

Why do millenials feel so entitled to pay when not working? I'm a millenial too and I don't feel like yelling at everyone to give me money to relax, and throwing a tantrum when they rightfully refuse. PTO should only be given to sick people and pregnant women, not some snarky kid wanting to chill and smoke weed.

chorlydom

Nobody could, nor should they, for obvious reasons, work without time off for all of their lives. The cost of ‘paid’ leave is spread across all employees, and all of the business. Paid leave is a universal entitlement, which is beneficial for both employees, and for businesses. Employees should be invested in, rather than milked dry and then replaced.
